Heartwarming / Death and the Maiden

• When Mercedes crosses the Despair Event Horizon and tries to say Death's name he forces his hand on her mouth to prevent her from doing so.
• After Mercedes's ill-fated encounter with Pestilence, Death transports them to the Void Between the Worlds, where he finally admits that he keeps saving her because he's fond of her and cannot bear to lose her.
  • While Mercedes cannot die in this dimension as time does not pass there, she also cannot be cured, leaving her perpetually coughing up blood. As she tells Death that this is a Fate Worse than Death, Death has his face buried in the crook of one arm, looking completely crushed and defeated, reinforcing just how much he cares about her. Doubles as a Tear Jerker.
