• Where did Nicolas come from?
  • I know they state he's a friendless magician's apprentice and he runs an orphanage later. But I think either A.) He was an early 20th-century orphan who was apprenticed-out, but to get apprenticed out to a magician sounds like something they wouldn't do unless Nicolas was already weirdly into magic, or had messed up so bad at a real apprenticeship. Or B.) He's the magician's illegitimate child which I can see as the only reason he puts up with so many screw-ups and makes him a shit parent.
