Headscratchers / Once Upon a Time in the West

  • Why was the conflict between Morton and McBain that starts the plot neccesary? While Morton clearly doesn't like that Frank killed the McBain's, he did want to scare them off their land. The greedy Railroad Baron forcing farmers of their land might be a common Western story, but it doesn't seem to fit here. McBain didn't want to stop the railroad from crossing his land, he was just about to build a whole railroad town and a station himself, while lacking the resources to build his own railroad. Morton isn't motivated by wanting to make as much money as possible, but by a desire to have his railroad reach the coast before he dies from his illness. A man who has prepared to build a town and infrastructure around a future railroad stop and a man who is in a hurry to have his railroad build seem like they're looking at a fantastic win-win situation. Was there some Poor Communication Kills going on, where Morton didn't realize McBain wanted a railroad to cross the land he wasn't selling?
    • Morton may not be greedy but it’s unlikely he’d have any influence over the town that springs up around the stop if he simply let Mc Bain build it, which would potentially limit any possibilities his company could have in expanding its interests in the area if at any point in the future the company decided it wanted to. It’s also possible that there were stipends and other payouts that Mc Bain would have been entitled to, but either Harmonica missed that part, or didn’t think they were important enough to worth mentioning, and Morton was simply too desperate to be willing to sit down and negotiate even more and was hoping that Frank would have enough self-restraint to not kill Mc Bain (or anyone, for that matter) and would instead scare Mc Bain into accepting whatever deal Morton would offer for the land.
  • Why does Harmonica keep wandering in the end? I can totally imagine him not wanting to settle down with Jill, but a suicide (what's left for him to live for after successful revenge?) seems like a more logical choice...
