Headscratchers / Minions

  • So the minions are compelled to serve the most evil villains throughout time. So why did they serve a T. Rex, who despite being a ferocious carnivorous apex predator had no real concept of "evil" and was simply trying to survive?
    • Isn't it obvious? T. Rex's are now known as one of the most ferocious dinosaurs at its time. To a minion, level of sentience doesn't matter. Even if it's an animal, to them, anyone is deemed worthy of servitude.
    • To be fair, the Minions were the only sapient beings (as far as we can tell) that were around at the time. It's possible that they started off serving the most ferocious predator they could find (but like cleaner fish), but by the time human civilisation took over, they evolved to serve the most despicable master they could find.
  • It's stated that Minions takes place in 1968. Gru's flashback in the first movie shows Gru dreaming of going to the moon before his mom crushes his dream. That flashback can't have happened any earlier than 1969. At the end of Minions, Gru is already causing trouble like a super-villain. The continuity just doesn’t match up.
    • He could have just wanted to be the first person to go to the moon.
    • This movie shows that in the Gru-niverse, the moon landing was faked.
    • Also, Gru's mother snarks that "they're not sending monkeys anymore", which might suggest that Gru is just forward-thinking. The last test flights involving monkeys were in 1961, so young Gru could just be accurately predicting that the moon would be the eventual goal of NASA.
  • Just what are the Minions being honored for at the end of the film? They caused most of the troubles that they're seemingly being given credit for fixing - not to mention the massive amount of property damage the giant Kevin caused. (I suppose that their antics could have resulted in the capture of all those villains that Scarlet invited to the coronation, but nobody mentions what happened to them.)
    • Well, I would say the police could say all damages and chaos were brought by Scarlet and other villains, and, Elizabeth II returned to the throne after Scarlet disappeared in the explosion. In addition, Scarlet and Herb may be arrested due to her attempt to steal the crown, and the last scene is she and her husband were trapped in a huge block of ice.
  • It is shown that Kevin Bob and Stuart get their blue overalls from a clothes rack, which would make sense, as those could be baby-size overalls, just like their black shoes, but where do they get those shoes, new chrome goggles and those three-fingered leather gloves?
    • If you focus on their brass goggles, you can see them slowly deteriorating throughout the journey until they are chrome.
    • But then, when they get their overalls on, the goggles change shape!
  • If Scarlet's goal was to have the world's most impressive crown, why didn't she ask Herb to make one for her?
    • Because she's too above just having a replica; she wanted the real thing.
  • If minions are so careless that they accidentally destroyed their villain masters, then someday in the future, the same thing may happen to Gru, right? Though Overkill and E. Perez (El Macho) fell from power before Gru......
    • I read a theory that this is why so much of the weaponry Gru and Nefario provides the Minions is either non-lethal (like the fart guns, jelly gun, anti-gravity serum, etc) or unlikely to go much harm (like the hammers they use for construction) while its shown they are clearly capable of building immensely destructive weaponry (freeze ray, gun Gru uses on the carnival booth, the weapons he has on the plane). He learnt from previous mistakes. Besides, he's a spy now, their equipment is sure to be non-lethal in itself or heavily regulated by the Agency.
  • I also wonder if there is going to have a sequel, Minions 2, as you can see, the three movie don't explain since when Dr. Nefario worked for Gru, and the gap between childhood and adulthood of Gru.
    • As for Dr. Nefario working for Gru, Gru and Marlena were watching his freeze ray exhibition in a blink and you'll miss it scene in villain-con. And Gru uses a freeze-Ray at the end of the movie. I think a lot can be inferred from that.
    • Well Gru is shown to be very hard to kill, the first movie has him somehow survive a shark attack, meaning he's eaither indestructible or just incredibly lucky (well, lucky in terms of not dieing).
  • Where was the ice cave the minions lived in? They are seen running from Napoleon to the cave, assuming somewhere in Europe. Then they are there for a while and run into bears and a yeti, assuming the nearest cold area, the arctic. Then the rest leave the cave and end up in Australia, assuming they were in Antarctica.
    • That cave may be in North Russia because the Minions found it after escaping from Napoleaon's troop, who were then having battle with Russia in 1812. As to Australia, the Minions may got there by airplanes, as you can see they do this in the film.
  • If the Minions' only goal is to serve the most despicable being around, as stated in the beginning of the movie, why did they continue to work for Gru when he stopped being a villain?
    • They'd grown used to him. But by the third film they left him to work for his brother, the villain Drew.
