Headscratchers / Annabelle's Wish

Go To

Okay. So I watched this movie when I was a wee lad, and of course, I loved it, still do. Cute talking animals, Christmas, what wasn’t to love? While I can’t remember the last time I watched it, maturity brings questions, and with questions come certain frustrations with the things you watched. So I’ll just lay it out here right now.

Who in their right mind read the idea, “A calf makes a wish to become one of Santa’s reindeer, as well as sacrificing her ability to talk for a little boy to have his voice again, and at the end of her life, she’s reborn as a reindeer” and thought, “Hmm, this seems reasonable”? Now, look, I understand that this is marketed towards children, maybe I’m thinking too much into it, and the ending is still sweet and all that, but the idea of a cow being transformed from a bovine into a cervine, well, that just hints at “Be Careful What You Wish For.” I mean, assuming that she hasn’t magically learned to operate as a reindeer, now Annabelle has to learn how reindeer walk, how they eat, and all manner of behaviors different from her old life as a cow. Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I’m thinking WAY too deeply about this, but still, it bugs me.

On a lesser note: where’s Rudolph? That's a question I had even as a little one, I’m pretty sure. I mean, as kids, we look at Santa’s reindeer and we expect to see Rudolph. What, does he just get called in for emergencies, “foggy Christmas Eves” and the like, and that’s why he doesn’t appear here?

Anyway, yeah. Again, I know, it's a kid’s movie, and maybe I’m looking too deep into it, but again, it just bugs me.
