Anime

  • Episode 5 - "Glare": Following the fight with the Garuda, Nanao becomes quite popular for beheading it while Oliver gets ignored despite he and Andrews, who also isn't shown being praised, had a hand in the battle. He doesn't mind but Michela decides he should get a reward anyway and makes to give Oliver a kiss on the cheek, to his embarrassment and Katie's anger. (The scene was also present in the novel but is much funnier in the anime.)
    • Then Nanao comes over, learns about this, but instead of being jealous she agrees, believing this is a custom in the west. She then goes right up and kisses Oliver on the cheek. Then, after admitting it was a bit more embarrassing than she thought, asks he return the favor and kiss her back. Has it been mentioned that this was taking place in the middle of the cafeteria where other students were present and likely had front row seats to the whole thing?
    • Oliver and Nanao's friends are of little help; Michela thinks its a fair request, Guy and Pete look bored as hell as the latter points out if Oliver didn't want to do he'd have said no and the former agrees, and all poor Katie can do is stammer out asking what's going on!
    • Oliver is finally convinced to do and get it over with...then his cousin/surrogate big sister Shannon shows up and asks if she's interrupting. She's quite a beauty and very affectionate with Oliver, giving him a Headbutt of Love and a kiss on the cheek before going, with Katie close to a breakdown at this point.
    • Then when all is said and done, Nanao realizes after the others have left that Oliver never gave her the kiss she asked for. In the original Japanese she's just confused as to what happened to her kiss while in the English Dub, she says "But...my kiss!" in a genuinely disappointed tone!
      • Given a Call-Back in episode 6 when Nanao again tries to get a kiss from Oliver after defeating Miligan.
"When Oliver recalled the incident later, he claimed the hardest thing about it was not collapsing on the spot then and there."

Light Novel

  • Volume 1: Andrews, Oliver and Nanao are battling the garuda, Oliver is wounded and goes for cover.
    Andrews: ...A—Aren't you scared?
Oliver: Huh? Of course I am! You'd have to be out of your mind not to—
(They both look over at Nanao, who's having the time of her life fighting the garuda.)
Oliver: Okay. So she might not be scared.
  • Volume 3: The extended flashback to Alvin Godfrey immunizing himself to Ophelia's Perfume by repeatedly casting pain spells on his own nards (episode 14 of the anime). Which is even funnier when you remember that the pain curse can only reproduce pain that the caster has experienced, meaning that Godfrey has canonically been kicked in the crotch before.
  • Volume 4: Oliver and Chela hold an informal sex ed seminar for the Sword Roses. Chela comments that statistically it's likely that four or five of them will have had Their First Time by the time they graduate, "possibly with someone seated at this very table." Katie, who crushes on Oliver, quickly looks away from him in embarrassment... and her gaze lands on Guy, who misunderstands and gives her a "No. Just… No" Reaction. Offended, she has Marco grab him by his shirt collar and hang him up somewhere high by his jacket for the remainder of the scene.
  • Volume 6:
  • Volume 7:
    • A haughty first-year girl tries to impress people with a dangerous peluda she's made her familiar, only for it to nearly go into a panic when Katie casually turns up with Marco the troll and Lyla the griffin. Katie chastises the girl for rushing things with taming the peluda and calms it down by being her usual sweet and cheerful self; meanwhile the girl is just standing there trying to pick her jaw up off the floor after Katie called the peluda "cute".
    • The sixth- and seventh-years are squaring off, waiting for the countdown to start their run through the labyrinth. The starting signal goes off—and Godfrey promptly burns a hole right through the floor and skips the entire first level.
  • Volume 8: Lesedi Ingwe's awkward complaint about having to watch the various ladies in Oliver's life fussing over him and Guy and Pete egging them on.
“Horn, one extra rule just for you. Don’t bring your love life onto the battleground. Hear me? You’re digging up a bunch of memories I’d rather leave buried, and it’s making me wanna puke.”
  • Volume 9:
    • Tim again, this time for his reaction to seeing Oliver's Beware the Nice Ones tendencies in the previous volume:
"The way you act all prim and proper makes you extra nasty. I oughtta pin a note to your back saying, I will lose my shit at the worst possible second."
    • Vera pulling some Loophole Abuse by low-key trying to buy votes in the student council election during the combat leagues bonus round, and then arguing when her opponent Percival Whalley complains that she just offered extra prize money and didn't actually tell people to vote for her.
Theodore: Hmm… I do see where Mr. Whalley is coming from, but… I was the one who said ‘however you like.’ It’s our fault for slapping together an event with such half-baked rules, but exploiting those loopholes is frankly a very Kimberly move. Is that not your own stance? In light of that, and given that Ms. Miligan is not specifically soliciting votes here, I’ll allow it.
  • Volume 10:
    • Miligan leads one of the finalist teams in the senior-year combat leagues, goes up as the underdog against a team led by Gwenaël Deschamps, and proceeds to make a complete and utter fool of him by playing a Shell Game with Milihand between herself and Lynette Cornwallis. She basically turns the entire match into a Straight Man and Wise Guy comedy routine with Deschamps's team the involuntary straight man, capped off by reversing the Kansas City Shuffle she pulled on Oliver and Nanao back in volume 1: Milihand was a diversion from the fact she had Katie move her main basilisk eye to the middle of her back!
    • The poll for Student Council President finally comes to pass, and Tim Linton of all people pulls off a Dark Horse Victory after Godfrey nominated him at the last minute. Miligan is completely stunned into silence, and then proceeds to drink herself into a stupor.
    • Nanao is grumbling her way through the Bustling Forest with a bad case of angst after her confrontation with Oliver at the end of volume 9, and actually lamenting the fact that she's become so much Famed In-Story that nobody ever tries to fight her anymore so she can't blow off steam that way either. Which, as fate would have it, is when Teresa Carste shows up, having had a spat with Oliver and now seeing Nanao as a romantic rival and possible threat to her "lord's" life. The resulting attempted ambush sees the hypercompetent underclassman frantically running for cover with her tail between her legs after Nanao clears the forest for twenty yards around with her opening volley and then near-effortlessly fends off her best attacks; meanwhile Nanao, typically for her, emerges in a much improved mood thanks to the bit of brisk exercise.
    • Nanao's incredibly bawdy line after she and Oliver flub Their First Time due to it hitting his Trauma Button.
Nanao: Practice makes perfect! Try every means that avail us, offer sufficient supplications to the divine, and soon—or in due time—we shall manage to get the pole in the hole.
Oliver: Uncouth! Nanao, that was uncouth!
      Nanao: (cackles)
