Issue #2 has the following exchange between a rich guy, Lester, and his girlfriend, Luna.
Lester: Jeez Luna, when I said you could buy a pet I didn't mean for it to be one of the extras from Aliens!
Luna: It's a mantis, Lester. A praying mantis. They, like, prey on innocent little bugs who don't know any better. I think I'll call it "Lester".
Issue #6, a pretty tragic story about a Thanagarian artist who decides as a last art piece to destroy LA with a tectonic bomb after broadcasting his entire life to the population, ends with a massive Mood Whiplash. Animal Man is screaming for help because he doesn't know how to deactivate the bomb, and all seems to be lost... Until Hawkman appears and just shuts it off with a switch.
During the Martian Manhunter's appearance Buddy asks him why they accepted Blue Beetle as a member. J'onn admits he doesn't know why.
- The same issue has Buddy absorbing the playfulness of a kitty and goofily playing with him, much to the constern of Maxine of all people.
An infamous scene has Animal Man having accidentally picked an ape's horniness, just when he is alone with Ms. Fanservice Vixen, who is engaging in Erotic Eating. Hilarity ensues.

The run opened with the grotesque image of Buddy eating a horse alive, since he was becoming much more animal-like.

The Penalizer is an Expy of The Punisher that does little more than kill random people and angst about it. Ironically enough, Steve Dillon would later go on to draw the Punisher. alongside his real daddy, Garth Ennis.
One part has Buddy and Ellen alone, when suddenly Cliff bites Ellen on the neck. After a Beat panel where it seems Buddy is regressing... It's revealed they are engaging in kinky foreplay. Black Comedy at its finest.
Nggggrrr... Me Ape Man.

The ending of "Talking Turkey", the story featured in the Vertigo Jam one-shot, where Buddy is so pissed off by the turkey's dim view on humanity and disparaging remarks on the merits of his vegetarianism that he gives the turkey the finger as it walks away.
