Bond Breaker is a Self-Insert Fic from the Sufficient Velocity forums written by Shadenight123 that has the main character Shade be a coffee-obsessed lover of Angst and Despair. It frequently tries to break the fourth wall, and has gone through various stages of meta in it's chapters. Shade is tugged across the Multiverse via a mysterious chain attached to him, having traveled to many worlds, from Naruto to Neon Genesis Evangelion to Frozen due to its pull. It now has a sequel, Hope Bearer.

"Bond Breaker contains examples of:"

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Shade acquires a lightsaber further along his voyage.
  • Climb, Slip, Hang, Climb: Arendelle's glacier isn't the best place to learn how to mountain climb.
  • Crossover: Shade travels to many worlds; Naruto, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mass Effect, Harry Potter, The Legend of Zelda, Frozen, Sword Art Online, Star Wars, War Hammer 40000, Fate/stay night, and Wind Waker, to name a few.
  • High School AU: One of the story arcs involves this
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Jane Shepard is actually the Shepard 'thought of' by Shade, hence, he 'created' her. Chapter One Hundred and Eight has Shade reveal this to Teen-Shepard.
  • More than Mind Control: The 'Universal Laws' of the visited realities force Shade to 'act' or 'speak' in a specific pattern. Evangelion is about metaphors and speeches with mock philosophy, Harry Potter is about being stupid-evil if you're not a fan of 'pure love', Disney Worlds demand that you sing, and so forth.
  • Mysterious Protector: One of the voices, 'Woobie' as nicknamed by the readers, seemingly does something until The Corrupted Higher Being realizes it and destroys her.
  • Papa Wolf: May the Gods have mercy if you threaten Woobie-Teen Shepard in front of Necronomicon-Powered Shade.
  • Take That!: Shipping Lovers, Common Tropes and Common Fanfiction premises are not spared the scathing remarks and snark-filled comments of Shade.
  • The Corruption: The Primary Antagonist.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Shade's author found this out when a race of godlike entities attacked him as he was writing the story
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jane Shepard is the first of the 'Bonded Anchors' who does this.
  • This Loser Is You: Shade is an incorporeal spirit, but the first thing he suffers the moment he becomes corporeal? A broken nose, and then it gets worse.
  • Straw Nihilist: Shade utilizes the knowledge of the worlds he visits and the persons around him in order to have things go his way. Due to the implications of his bonds, in order to aid them, he has little choice. Common weapons in his arsenal include Despair Speech and Armor-Piercing Question.
  • Wish-Fulfillment:The Corrupted Voice is a personification of this trope. It is nothing short of the whisper in the back of the head of the author, the subconscious desire to write 'interesting' things to the extreme, to the point where it stops being interesting and instead becomes annoying.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The Voices are nothing short than creatures possessing ultimate powers, in search of the answer to the only question they cannot answer. This drives them mad in the long run, and with that madness comes their extermination.
  • Within Parameters: Although the Corruption is visibly spreading, the Voices keep the experiment ongoing as everything is still within parameters.
