In the original comic run, Spider-Man was Peter's way of being better: An ideal self meant to express the better part of his nature. In a way, that gives the logic of him becoming The Legendary Spider-Man some extra credence. Although he needs the other heroes to win his hardest battles, "Spider-Man" is an ideal hero that will become the standard many will be reaching towards.
Fridge Horror
In the first part of Spider Island, The Web Warriors team up with the New York Police Department, who'd all gotten spider powers, to take down Man Mountain Marko and The Enforcers. Then in part 2, we find out all the infected become Spider Monsters. Meaning even though they weren't on-screen, Yuri and Jefferson Davis all got turned into monsters.
