The Skateboard Kid is a 1993 comedy film directed by Larry Swerdlove. It follows Zack, the leader of a gang of mischief-causing skateboarders, who suddenly finds having to move from Los Angeles to Mill Creek, Pennsylvania. Even though his old gang follows him on skateboard all the way to Mill Creek, they slowly turn from Zack's friends to bullies. After Zack's skateboard breaks, he meets Maggie, the mother of one of the local girls, who gives him a new skateboard as a thank-you gift. After making some modifications to the new board, a bolt of lightning hits it, bringing it to life (voiced by Dom De Luise.) After Rip the board protects Zack from the bullies, they form a friendship like no other.

In 1994 a sequel, simple entitled The Skateboard Kid II, was released.

This movie provides examples of

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Zack's skateboard becomes this after getting hit with a lightning bolt.
  • A Boy and His X: A boy and his sentient skateboard, in this case.
  • Companion Cube: Rip to Zack.
  • Cool Board: Rip, Zack's modified skateboard. It has a motor and a prehensile arm, and it talks too!
  • Fat, Sweaty Southerner in a White Suit: Frank, Zack's dad, dresses like one in his car dealership commercial.
  • Goofy Suit: In the movie's opening sequence, the gang runs into a man in a chicken suit advertising a wing restaurant. They pull off his costume's head to distract a cop.
  • In Name Only: The Skateboard Kid II has nothing to do with the first movie except the general idea of a kid skateboarding.
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: In this case, bring a motorized skateboard to life.
  • Minnesota Nice: Maggie, a Mill Creek local, is extra nice to Zack when they first meet.
  • The Mockbuster: This film is actually one of an obscure 1985 movie entitled The Dirt Bike Kid.
  • Pass the Popcorn: When Zack and Rip fight the bullies, one of said bullies eats a sandwich while the chaos unfolds.
