Go To

Hololive Funkin': Non-Canon Ina Week is a Game Mod for Friday Night Funkin' and a recursive mod of HoloFunk developed by Tressa, Iam, Codexes, Awoofle, ASARI, Holo Bass, and Tacocat. As it implies, it pits Mano Aloe against Ninomae Ina'nis, or simply just "Ina", as the rogue priestess touched by the Ancient Ones threatens to merge Earth with the Painted World, an Acid-Trip Dimension of her own creation.

While largely contained to the titular week and several freeplay bonuses, the mod also reworks the backgrounds of the first three weeks of HoloFunk to go along with the main week's story. The story mode itself also makes use of modcharts, dialogue, and cutscenes, before the original mod follows suit with Version 5.0.0 onwards.

The Non-Canon Ina Week supplements HoloFunk's totally-seiso tropes with the following:

  • Acid-Trip Dimension: The Painted World is an Eldritch Location that looks like it was pulled right out of, well, a painting, and has a suitably rough appearance to it that clashes with the artstyle of Friday Night Funkin'.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The real Ina would never intentionally try to invoke an apocalyptic event, even with a sense of chivalry in the matter. If anything, her depiction in the mod is an inversion of her actual self - while Ina in reality has a genuine polite and soft-spoken demeanor that nonetheless belies unsavory knowledge, the version of her in the mod is instead Affably Evil and has to have her niceties squeezed out of her in a fight.
  • Alternate Continuity: As the title alone states, this mod is non-canon to HoloFunk.
  • Brutal Bonus Level: The freeplay bonuses are exceedingly long and positively dripping in modchart gimmicks capable of causing game overs unless you're giving your 110%.
  • The Cameo: Towa is visible watching Ina and Aloe sing during "Inapurgation" and "Inaposter."
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Haachama, of course. In the epilogue, she is the only one unfazed by the merging of the world, though she made herself a tasty afternoon snack from some power that resided within the world-merging.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: The halo notes in "Eldritch Phantasm" are placed in such a manner that otherwise-valid hits of nearby real notes will instead register to them if they're too late, causing Aloe to quickly burn through her lives if you're not careful.
  • Cover Version: "Inapurgation" is, quite obviously, "Expurgation" as sung with Ina's vocals and remixed to be appropriately dramatic. On its own, it's slower than the original and thus easier on paper, but in addition to Expurgation's original gimmicks, the sanity notes are still draining Aloe's health and thus making it more difficult to keep up as the halo notes start rolling in.
  • Damage Over Time: The mod makes use of "sanity notes" which allow Ina to push back Aloe's health, with the effect actually being permanent unless Aloe hits her own "sanity notes" to recover. Her Takodachi also serve as replacements for Tricky's HP gremlins in Inapurgation, and thus similarly pull down the health bar at set intervals.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Ina transforms from her Adorable Abomination self into a Vessel that retains her powers halfway through the week and at the midpoint in "Eldritch Phantasm," which also changes her vocals from her original voice to something resembling an organ.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Amelia and Gura are apparently stuck in one that's also filled with water as a result of the Painted World's disruptions.
  • Marathon Level: "Eldritch Phantasm" lasts almost nine minutes, making it among the longest modded songs. And unlike Little Man, it's not joking around and retains both the sanity note and halo note mechanics, making it a long and very strenuous ride to the end.
  • Mini-Game Credits: The credit sequence is its own song, which has Ina going solo to sing "Stand by Me."
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Ina's Yandere tendencies towards Nene come at odds with Aloe being the Implied Love Interest of Nene in HoloFunk proper. Resolving that in this manner is just an added bonus if she wins.
  • Mythology Gag: To recover health at one point in "Radiant Heaven" after Ina's portion takes away ninety percent, Aloe sings the chorus of "Happy Synthesizer", a vocaloid song strongly associated with her due to being one of the few songs she's covered in her time in hololive.
  • Noble Demon: Ina holds her end of the deal and fully reverses the effects of the looming apocalypse after losing fairly to Aloe.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The second song, "Unraveling Distortion," is the memetic opening to Tokyo Ghoul, "Unravel," which Ina has both covered live and admitted to singing to herself when befallen by misfortune.
    • Ina's transformation and the backgrounds surrounding it are an incredibly blatant and protracted reference to Hollow Knight, which Ina has played on stream.
    • Two Touhou Project related songs are included, complete with Spell Card transitions to complete the homage.
      • "Bordering Final Story", while initially starting off as a slower paced remix of "Shiny Smiley Story", transitions into a remix of "Border of Life". The song as a whole even uses the same sound-font of the latter song.
      • "Eldritch Phantasm" is a remix of Yuuhei Satellite's "Clouds Over the Moon, Flowers in the Wind", which in itself is a remix cover of "Last Remote". The title of the song brings to mind Fantasy Kaleidoscope, which Yuuhei Statellite's song is prominently used as an intro for episodes 2-4. The name of the song is also likely a reference to Phantasm stages in the Touhou Project, which unlock after clearing the first bonus (or "Extra") stage initially unlocked in the post-game.
    • "Inaposter" is Among Drip in the style of the rest of the mod.
  • Suspicious Video-Game Generosity: "Eldritch Phantasm" gives Aloe three lives which let her hit halo notes without consequence at the cost of expending them. The song is almost nine minutes long and places halo notes in positions that shorten the window of time to hit real notes, so you will need them.
  • Triumphant Reprise: "Our Nonstop Story" and "Bordering Final Story" are both reprises of "Shiny Smily Story," hololive's first original song attributed to the group overall. The two are different flavors of the same trope, with the former representing Aloe triumphing over Ina and the latter representing the two reconciling, even if they haven't actually met each other for long enough to call it that.
  • Victory Fakeout: "Eldritch Phantasm" has the UI disappear and the screen Fade to Black about four and a half minutes in, making it seem like it's over... but then everything fades back in with Ina transformed into her Vessel self, at which point it's revealed that's only the halfway point.
  • Yandere: Ina notes that if Aloe loses and the merging of the worlds succeeds, her role as Nene's Implied Love Interest will be very easily replaced by Ina herself.

Wah!
