After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

- Synopsis: OC fic. A new duelist in a new academy battles for one reason: to become the greatest dragon duelist ever! Of course, that's assuming he can deal with all the problems that come up...
- Comments: One of the oldest fics I can remember reading fondly. The story takes place before GX's timeline and includes the original series characters in cameo roles, except for Serenity who's upgraded to a main character in this fic. All of the OCs, including main protagonist JB Jennings, are distinct and likable, with cool decks and somewhat cliche but enjoyable personalities. The duels are the focus, and the duels are great. The fic hasn't been updated since 2008 so it's pretty much dead, but I still want other tropers to read what I think is a good fanfic.
Tag Force: Learning to Duel by Hiyuusha

- Synopsis: Based on the Tag Force games, it's a story that follows Red Hat "Konami" on his adventures through Duel Academy. It also has a completed 5D's counterpart.
- Comments: It is not only a GX counterpart, it is also a sequel and considered alternate of the 5D's route. The author never fails to amaze people with many unexpected twists. A third part is underway.

- Heleentje: Wholeheartedly seconded. In fact, everything by SilvorMoon is pretty amazing.
Supreme King Jaden by SuperNeos2

- Synopsis: An Alternate Take on the first season of the anime. Jaden has a disabled twin brother in this story, knows about his past as Haou, and has Yubel with him right from the start.
- Comments: This is a well-written story that shows just how different the story could've gone down had Jaden had a twin and known about a few little things prior to his first year at Duel Academy. It takes detours from the story of the anime and expands upon key events to enhance the flow. Lots of twists in this one that'll satisfy any fan of the anime and any reader. Well written and developed original characters, especially Jaden's twin, as well as interesting takes on existing characters. It has everything you could want in a story. Angst, drama, friendship, family, you name it. I highly recommend it. A spin-off and Season 2 are in the works as of now!
Chariot's Progress by SilvorMoon

- Synopsis: A retelling of the second season focusing on Misawa, and why he joined the Society of Light. Contains slight AU.
- Comments: If you're angry over Misawa's Demoted to Extra treatment in the series, fear not. This fanfiction proves that there are people out there who care about him. This fic also provides insights on how the way that the Society gets its members is More than Mind Control, and no character is left flat. Note that there aren't a lot of duels, though.
- Timber!: Seconded. In this Troper's opinion, it told the Society of Light arc better than the canon did, and in a way that made much more sense.
Year One, The Trial of Shadows by cypsiman2

- Synopsis: An Alternate Universe fanfic that is based more on the manga. A more serious look at the first year at Duel Academy, with more competent villains and a darker plot.
- Comments: You've probably seen several of these, but this it's well written. Features loads of original characters that are three dimensional. A much darker look at the GX Duel Academy swamped with threats that will end the world.
- Troublethecat: For one thing the fic Gender Swaps Kaiser Ryo, Samejima and Hayato simply because the author doesn't think there's enough important female characters in the cast, but also turns Those Two Girls Junko and Momoe into more important characters for the same reason. Also The Author replaces the Seven Stars with the Eight Phases of the Cursed Wave, and then has the audacity to have The Epitaph of Twilight be a real poem in the setting without The World also existing in the story, thus making the whole thing all the more ridiculous and out of place. Not to mention the Subject of the Hannibal Lecture Kaiser Ryoko is given to convince her to give in to her dark side. Ugh. And then there's what the Author did to Daitokuji, turning him into an unrepentant cackling villain before promptly killing him off. Also, Asuka, who goes from being competent to rapidly approaching
Black Hole Sue territory in the Sequel by way of avoiding being brainwashed by Saio despite losing to him in a duel, AND being seen as more of a threat to his plans than Judai is for some reason. I could go on even further than this, but I should really stop here. A lot of things about this series just grinds my nerves, but it's well written enough that I'm sure plenty people will like it anyway and it's at least worth taking a look at. - LilyNadesico2: I, on the other hand, recommend this. It's well written, the characters are actually well developed, and it avoids the wallbanger moments that destroyed the canon series in my book. Definitely worth a look.

So Far, So Good by Heleentje (there is death in this fic, and it can be violent)

- Synopsis: This is set post-canon and involves mainly Juudai, Johan, and Yubel, with appearances by other canon characters at various points as Juudai travels. The general plot involves a force known as Chaos and the search for the incarnation of Good Light, which could be much closer to Juudai than he thinks, in more ways than one.
- Comments: This story has now been completed and is still absolutely wonderful. The original characters are well written and believable, a rarity in this fandom, and the plot is well thought out and even more well crafted. Be prepared to have your every heartstring tugged, even the ones you didn't know you had.

- Comments: The writing is a bit bumpy at times, but the the story made me cry and laught and cry some more (as a neurodivigent person some of it hit incredible close) - there is lots of support and I like the focus on friendship instead of romance.

- Synopsis: Waking up in an unfamiliar body within the Slifer Red dorm, what's a teen to do? Especially when there was no deck in sight and no currency to spend on new cards. Thankfully, an avid fan such as himself knew all about the discarded cards in a well deep within the forest of Duel Academy Island. With those spirits by his side, he'd fight his way to victory and survive! Self-Insert!
- Comments: This fic is one of the best self-insert fics I've read. The character is a bit arrogant when it comes to his skills as a duelist, but he has every right to be when he has Duel Spirits on his side. His interactions with other characters are very entertaining to read, and he does have a good side to him; he cares for all the spirits who jojn him and wants to make sure that they all have a chnace to shine, becuase he recognises that even the weakest card can give a large advantage.
- MilkshakeEmpress: I can't believe anyone thinks this is good. Yarden is a boring, generic Marty Stu who's too cool for everyone, does what he pleases without repercussions, is the source of adoration for all the characters the author likes and the envy of those he hates, has a bevy of snarky Duel Spirits providing running commentary for everything, and overcomes every challenge effortlessly. I stopped reading when he won a duel against Zane of all people without losing a single Life Point. The way he continually refers to the girls as "eye candy" to their faces and is rewarded with the same girls admiring his "self-confidence" and fawning over him is beyond annoying. Dreck.

- Synopsis: A Re-writing of the Anime with newer cards, elements from the Manga as well as other changes made to the story. Follows on from the events of Dark Side of Dimensions. Jaden arrives once again at Duel Academy as a supremely skilled underdog that becomes embroiled with a clash against supernatural enemies...as well as dealing with his usual academy life.
- Comments: I have some mixed feelings about this fic. The storytelling leans on a more mature angle compared to the anime and a lot of the goofier filler has been cut out. Some of the changes, such as the addition of a few OCs and the absolute shake-up of the Shadow Riders roster, feel a tad unnecessary, but other elements work well (like the Author's explanation as to why there as so few girls outside the Blue Dorm). The Duels, however, are pretty high quality stuff and are a highlight of the series to me. Also has a trope page at Yu-Gi-Oh! Re-GX.
- Olstheway: Honestly, a solid fic. Author is really good at their duel scripting and building up to the big events. The Villains don't come off as passive or inactive; they're always doing something even if we don't get to see it. Nightshroud (Shadow Rider) in this is so much more impressive than his Anime Counterpart and the Society of Light arc is quickly shaping up to be even better than the Shadow Riders Arc.
- Leblanc: Honestly this my favorite GX rewrite fanfic of all time. The author doesn't copy and paste any scenes and dialogue from the anime. The duels are good quality and the author does a good job in keeping female characters relevant and writing everyone in-character. The villains are more competent and are a threat compared to anime and the story is more dark and matured and doesn't have some forced comedy scenes. Another best part of this fic, is there is no unwanted fillers.

- Comments: A very good read for those who want a Yu-Gi-Oh! and Kamen Rider Crossover. It starts off rather slow but it picks up speed and leaves you wanting more. Many OC involvement and many divergences from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! GX so it isn't a complete rewrite of the anime series with added characters. Season 2 is in the works.

They end up in Kaiba's digital world where Gilgamesh learning of the King's card game creates a body for Hakuno within it and a deck compromising of Heroic Spirits for Hakuno before hacking the system of Duel Academy and having the former NPC enrolled. Starts off as light hearted but the theme slowly gets darker as the story progresses, Jaden is still and idiot though.

- Comments: Ruby and others join at the same time Jaden does. Due to the many RWBY characters, the continuity is different. The author usually uses the real world version of cards whenever possible. Later, a few characters from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V appear, but only the ones who use Fusion monsters. Since this fic takes place during GX, the author is adamant that Synchro, XYZ, etc monsters will not appear.
