• The central premise — a high school dedicated to teaching the next generation to play Duel Monsters has been the subject of many jokes, most of which point out the absurdity of needing to go through three years of school to learn how to play a game for children. Most likely the dub plays a large role in this perception, since it doesn't properly emphasize that Duel Academy is meant to train students to play the game professionally.
• Maybe Kaiba was right to set up the Duel Academy.^ExplanationAs the years went on, the game became a lot more complex, with additional Summoning mechanics and cards that have a paragraph of text written on them. There's also a lot of minutiae in card interaction, and the deckbuilding process has become a fair bit more demanding. Due to the steep learning curve of the modern game, players joke that history has vindicated Kaiba's decision to build a Duel Academy.
• In general, the Dub is widely considered this:
  • Chazz it up! Chazz it up! Chazz it up!
  • "Everyone is Goku", on account of Goku's English VA Sean Schemmel voicing a vast majority of the characters in the English dub. For example, Crowler is referred to as "KappaPride Goku", and Viper is referred to as "Goku Black".
  • Referring to Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise as "Turtle Joey", due to sharing the same VA.
  • In Season 3, any mentions of being "sent to the stars" are recognized as "sent to the Shadow Realm".
  • Crystal Beast Amber Mammoth for being voiced by Sean Schemmel doing an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression (specifically of The Terminator quotes or just shouting random gibberish while attacking another card, and yes, you read all of that correctly). Namely the scene where Jesse summons him in his duel against Trapper (who is also voiced by Sean Schemmel and has subsequently been nicknamed "Texan Goku" by the fandom) only to be immediately negated by Trapper's Catcher Snare.
• From the manga, Jesse's 'It was a happy Duel'.
• Taking innocuous or cute scenes and pictures of Jaden, then adding how he "killed millions" and other unspeakably bad deeds. Sometimes he's depicted as being Obliviously Evil with these.
• His catchphrase in the Japanese version - "1! 10! 100! 1000! Manjoume Thunder!" is also well-liked for the wordplay, and became an Ascended Meme in the effect of Armed Dragon Thunder LV10.
• From various poorly worded subtitles we have Bastion's "I've found the way to counter attack your balls!" and "This place has been reserved for the Whites."
• Someone phone Sartorious, he finally got Jaden to join the club.^ExplanationWhen Jaden destroys Yubel's field spell in the dub, he says that it's time that Yubel saw the Light, which was the catchphrase of The Society of Light.
• Referring to Sartorius/Saiou as "Budget Dartz" or "Dio" due to being a charismatic cult leader and having the same Japanese voice as Dio in addition to having Arcana Force XXI - The World as a major trump card. Persona references are also common due to him being a fortuneteller with a Tarot-themed deck.
• Dark Zane/Hell Kaiser Ryo is referred to as "Edgelord Zane" or "Akuma".
• HE'S FAT!^explanationA sound clip LittleKuriboh applies in his reviews whenever Chumley mentions food or his weight.
• The artwork for the anime-only Dramatic Crossroads became a very popular meme late 2020 as people would label the child as someone making a choice while the light and dark castles are the good and bad outcomes respectively. Sometimes, the artwork is edited so that both sides are dark to show that both outcomes are undesirable.
• The means where characters train their "drawing skills" is often parodied, especially Damian from episode 9 where he trained by fishing out cards pouring down a waterfall. This is often a suggested way to improve one's own luck at "drawing the out".
• DINO DNA^ExplanationTyranno's backstory involves a fractured bone that was mended with a dinosaur fossil fragment, which would strengthen him with "DINO DNA!" and also empower him with other coincidental things like Immune to Mind Control. This ridiculous backstory would get its own copypasta and any mention of DINO DNA would also require pronouncing it with Tyranno's Southern accent.
