As a result, the series stands out as the stories manage to mix both romance, adventure, and comedy, rather than just being a straight-up romance series, much like many Vinyl and Octavia shipfics.

When Flash is assigned to escort Twilight to the Crystal Empire at Princess Celestia's insistence, tensions on all sides only seem to escalate. Can Flash Sentry submit to the laws he is bound to uphold, even in the face of his own convictions? How will his friends, Steel Wind and Sharp Spear, react when they learn his secret? What will happen when Flash learns that he is not the only pony—nor the only Royal Guard—who questions the order? And, most importantly, what if Twilight... felt the same?
- Comments: Despite the setting depicting a Fantastic Caste System endorsed by Celestia and having an unpopular ship as the main focus, the story expertly manages to evade the pitfalls associated with those developments. The caste system isn't anywhere near Grimdark levels and makes an interesting obstacle for the main couple to overcome, with an obvious light at the end of their tunnel. Celestia remains a sympathetic, complex character who honestly believes the Order is vital to keeping her ponies safe and harmonious despite her own feelings on the matter, avoiding a huge case of Ron the Death Eater. Next, the story develops Flash Sentry into a likeable character struggling with his feelings versus his duties, and the budding romance between him and Twilight Sparkle is both well-paced, believeable, and refuses to descend into sickening sweetness.

Pinkie has a pegasus filly with another on the way, but the stress of keeping even one flying foal safe is taking its toll on her. Twilight, however, thinks she can engineer a solution, and enlists Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Apple Bloom to help bring her designs to fruition.

- Along with The Vinyl Scratch Tapes, this massive fic is the biggest thing written about Vinyl and Octavia, both in terms of size and popularity. Having multiple pieces of fan-art and fan-music dedicated to it, it's one of the brony community's finer achievements. If you're going to read anything from this list, read this one.
- I really love this fic, but if you're like me and just finished The Vinyl Scratch Tapes then prepare to be surprised. Their personalities are a little different here, but overall the story works great. Oh, and the versions of Lyra and Bon Bon here are really, really weird compared to how I usually see them. Shining Armor is his childhood friend/sweetheart whom he drove away with his snobbishness, and when Shining returns to Canterlot with Princess Cadance (as her personal bodyguard, not her husband) Blueblood takes the opportunity to try and mend some fences. It's also shown that while Blueblood's snobbishness may not have endeared him to Shining Armor, neither is Shining Armor entirely free from blame, as he kept expecting Blueblood to choose between being with him and being with his family without taking Blueblood's feelings into consideration.

- Comments: An excellent story, and a great read all around. The characterization of Twilight and Fluttershy is spot-on. The author takes great pains not to rush the romance - the progression of their relationship is both realistic and has excellent pacing. The characters' speaking style is a bit off, as the author is British, but the spelling, grammar, and overall style is sound. The plot is a bit too 'convenient' at times, (such as Fluttershy being able to talk to and understand animals, and Twilight's magic being superpowered when she's in mortal danger) but it's a very good fic nonetheless, and definitely worth a read for any TwiShy fan, especially if you like the adventure genre.
