    General Fics
Golden Halos by AuroraRose2081
  • Recommended by: Megaeliz

  • Synopsis: Bruno felt it when Mirabel accepted his hands. The rush of familiar magic; the pull of a prophecy coming to fruition before them. But as he stared at his niece within the sand, her glassy eyes illuminated like golden halos in the dark. She saw something he hadn’t, something he’d missed in all his years of telling the future.
  • Comments: A Continuation fic with a fun concept and great characterization, especially for Bruno.

  • Recommended by: Tsukiyo

After the casita is rebuilt and the magic is restored, everyone does their best to get Bruno back into their lives and back into their family. leap of faith by deadmetal

  • Recommended by: meepindude
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: “L-Lilo?” Antonio whimpers, his eyes full of unshed tears. He’s whispering again, like he did before his gift ceremony. “Where’s Mira?” [OR: casita falls and the subsequent morning that ensues, from camilo's perspective]
  • Comments: Short and sweet piece from Camilo's perspective during the period of time between Casita's fall and Mirabel's return. Makes time for some brief flashback scenes to further contextualize his thoughts and feelings, and gives insight into his relationships with the other Madrigals as well as Mirabel.

A wilderness you kinda miss, but were taught you ought to cut it back by Kbaycolt

  • Recommended by: Tropemaster849
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Imperfection did not suit Isabela Madrigal. (Still, something seethed under her skin. An amorphous, hungry something, something with teeth and spines and rough, sharp edges. Some wild urge that snarled at the endless roses and snapped at her admirers and frightened her so much that she doubled down on sealing it away. Something that, when Abuela decided to arrange an engagement to Mariano for her, began to burn painfully in the back of her throat, and she bore it with a demure smile and her hands folded tightly in her lap so she wouldn't start shattering plates at the breakfast table.)
  • Comments: A very interesting look into Isabela's mind as she deals with the constant demands from everyone to be perfect.

It's Time For a Change by Midnightfrogo

  • Recommended by: Cat798
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Camilo never seemed to be affected by everything that took place, he seemed like his normal jokester self. Little did anyone know Camilo had been more affected than they thought. Bruno gets worried about the way Camilo has been acting so he looks into the future and is terrified by what he saw. He and the rest of the family decide to find a way to prevent a tragedy and change the future.
  • Comments: The life of one of the Madrigals is in serious danger, obviously it could scare and sadden you, but the Madrigals still have hope of saving the life of one of the youngest members of the family.

Power Shuffle Playlist by AtarahDerekh

  • Recommended by: Tropemaster849
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Madrigals' powers all get shuffled randomly for 24 hours when the candle falls and Augustín catches it. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: As the synopsis says, this story is utterly hilarious as the different members of the family try to deal with each other's powers. However, it also gives a much deeper dive into everyone's different views on their powers, as well as how they help the others adjust to having their power.

Set in stone by WhistlingWolf13

  • Recommended by: meepindude
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Mirabel finds Bruno standing outside the door to his room and learns that he hasn't dared to enter since the magic returned. She never expected that following him inside would lead to new revelations about her tío, his powers and his past.
  • Comments: A continuation piece about Bruno finally going back to his room and discovering what it is he truly needs, with Mirabel's help.

Just on the Other Side by StormySeaWitch

  • Recommended by: meepindude
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: ‘I told you I was coming to visit you,’ he tells her, his voice rich with fondness. It’s been so long since she heard that voice. He sounds calm, and she lets the timbre bring back long-forgotten memories. ‘Just visit?’ Alma asks. ‘No, mi vida,’ Pedro says, kissing her knuckles exactly like he had in her dream. ‘I’m here to bring you home with me. When you’re ready.’ Alternatively: the Madrigals say goodbye.
  • Comments: Chronicles Alma's last days and her goodbyes to her family. This Troper made it through the first read-through in one piece. In their hubris, they read it once more and cried. Very good, very emotional, with a heart-wrenching twist at the end to boot.

Waiting To Get Rid of a Miracle by Bellatrix_Wannabe_89

  • Recommended by: AbundanceofTropes
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Pepa wishes that her father never made his sacrifice. She wishes that Pedro had been willing to run and hide like the rest of the men rather than face the raiders alone. She wishes she could have grown up with a father instead of with a gift and a magic house. Then one night; Pepa’s wish comes true. And soon after she wishes it hadn’t…
  • Comments: Follows Pepa as she navigates a life without her powers, but with her father. Even though it centers on Pepa, the fic does make mention of other family members and their potential fates without their powers.

Futuro by ZenyZootSuit

  • Recommended by: urcool91
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Bruno Madrigal's future had already been decided. His cards had been dealt. Now, it was up to him to learn how to live with that. And, if through nothing but sheer spite, he would. Or, the story of Bruno Madrigal's reintegration into the Madrigal household as his family watches and remembers.
  • Comments: A post-canon fic where the family dysfunction is a far way from fixed, Bruno is magnificently bitchy and protective, and everything is more broken but still hopeful.

When the Bell Tolls One by BudBrock

  • Recommended by: euan112358
  • Status: Complete, sequel Ongoing
  • Synopsis: She had asked for her eyes to be opened, she couldn't nitpick what she was shown no matter how much she wished to deny it. The proof of her failures was being laid out before her. She was being given a chance to see…to change and fix it. When she asked for her eyes to be opened...this wasn't what she had in mind...
  • Comments: A "Let's Watch Our Show" Plot fic a la A Christmas Carol, Alma goes to sleep after Antonio's gift ceremony, praying to see how to save their miracle, and finds herself as a ghost following her wayward nieta Mirabel around for the two days encompassing most of the movie. It does an interesting job in getting into Alma's head as she slowly realises what her granddaughter and family have to deal with as a result of her pressure, and also in translating the movie's songs into dialogue.
  • A sequel is currently in progress, with Alma doing her darnest to fix everything that she'd seen. Unfortunately, there are other side effects from her attempts, like accidentally convincing her family that she's dying.

To Extinguish The Sun by HeartToHaato

  • Recommend by: Arrow_of_Ravenclaw
  • Status: Complete. Currently has an alternate universe story in progress. Sequel can be found here.
  • Synopsis: Something unspeakable happens to Camilo Madrigal. The other Madrigals can tell something is off, and that their ball of sunshine has dimmed to a worryingly flickering ember. Camilo thinks if he can pretend it never happened, then things will go back to normal. But danger lurks nearby, haunting him, infecting him like a parasite, and eventually, it will tire of playing cat-and-mouse. His family seeks to protect him before their sun is extinguished for good.
  • Content warning: Sexual assault of a minor, blood & injury.
  • Comment: One of my favorites not just in this fandom. It's one of my favorite fics ever. While it tackles serious topics, it never gets too graphic with its scenes and the author handles the matters with the care they need. If you feel this is something you can handle and are looking for good Camilo angst, check it out.

Piano Lessons by WifeOfBean

  • Recommended by: meepindude
  • Pairing: Julieta/Agustín.
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: 19-year-old Julieta has never really thought about boys. Especially not awkward, accident-prone Agustín.

All The Secrets I've Been Keeping by GenericWoman

  • Recommended by: meepindude
  • Pairing: Mariano/Dolores.
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Synopsis: The day Dolores fell in love with Mariano, and the days following.

Out of Place & Out of Time by FandomShuffle

La Verdad de la Sangre by Elli_Lite

  • Recommended by: Unnamed
  • Pairing: Mirabel/Camilo
  • Status: Ongoing. (Author said that she's already finished the story, just putting out chapters every few days.)
  • Synopsis: Camilo Madrigal thought that Mirabel only had a bad day. Make her laugh a little bit, give her space, and she was back to normal. It was easy to forget. Little did he know that her bad day would lead to a murder, two marriages, multiple children, and then a double homicide fifteen years in the making.
  • Comments: The characterization is amazing and the family never stops feeling like a family. It reads like Encanto if Encanto dealt with darker subject matter and the reality of what happens to women who are pregnant from rape in a society where unmarried mothers are unacceptable. And the reality of how a really loving family would work together to help those women.

the stars don't shine, they burn by Lady_Stormbraver

  • Recommended by: Tsukiyo
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: AU in which Bruno Madrigal is a little less forgiving, and a little less honest. In his mind, the so-called miracle has been nothing but a curse on their family— and none more so than himself and his young daughter. If she can’t have a gift, then why should anyone else get to keep theirs? If destroying the family’s magic is Mirabel’s destiny, then he will do whatever it takes to make sure that this future comes to pass, even if it means watching her grow up through ever-growing cracks in the Casita’s walls. His estrellita deserves the chance to shine bright, and he will make their family see her. (He doesn’t account for her tenacity.)

The Moth and the Mariposa by Envidia Eau Verte

  • Recommended by: Tsukiyo
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Synopsis: Two caterpillars; transformed into a charm and a curse. To Part. To Reunite. To protect Mirabel from her own familia, Tio Bruno is willing to transform himself into whatever he needs to become.
  • Comments: Villain Bruno but he's very ineffective. Bruno is an unhinged magical stoner that delves into stream-of-consciousness rants spiced up with 21st-century pop culture references and Disney song quotes. Magical realism is turned up to eleven; magic is powered by the power of imagination. Symbolism aplenty. The tags say Bruno/Mirabel, but there's nothing explicit besides Bruno having a huge crush on her, so if you're uncomfortable with it you can brush it off as platonic. Really, don't let the squirk from a tag keep you out of this amazing fic, I beg you!

A little dinner scandal by SrebrnaFH

  • Recommended by: Tropemaster849
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After a bad night and a whole day of chores, Mirabel is just so tired she loses the control of her tongue. Maybe, if she managed to stay silent, Isabela's engagement would have just gone through? She'll never know.
  • Comments: Basically, an AU where rather than finding Bruno's vision, Alma pushes Mirabel and some of the cousins a little too far with her mistreatment of her and it leads to some interesting Fridge Horror, namely the idea that the reason Alma was truly pushing for Isabela's marriage was so that she would basically become a Baby Factory in order to get more miracle children. Fun read if you want to see Mirabel call out Alma more then in the movie.

Two butterflies: gone with the wind by BrilliantLight

  • Recommended by: Tsukiyo

  • Comments:
    • Miss_Tropes: While it's not finished as of yet, this is definitely one of the better thought out and well-written Papa Bruno aus out there. Especially since it touches on the complications that would come with Bruno not being Mirabel's biological father, which most of these aus either ignore or erase by giving the two an Adaptational Relationship Overhaul.

Bruno is trying yet struggling to reconnect with his son after being gone for ten years, not helped by the fact that Camilo still believes that Bruno is his uncle. However, things start to go terribly wrong when Bruno sees a vision of an old shadow from his past: Victoria Madrigal.
  • Content Warning: Depictions of violence and abuse.
  • Comments: A "Bruno is Camilo's father" AU, but interesting in that Victoria is an active villain and the story shows how the whole family is affected by her kidnapping Camilo.

Each family member has a chapter that will be published that focuses solely on them and Mirabel. • Comments: A fanfic which shows that the Madrigal family truly loves Mirabel even if they don't do the greatest job showing it.

  • Comments: Tangled AU! As one comment put it best, it hits the main story points of Tangled while keeping it distinctly Encanto.

Nuestro Milagro by har_eclipse

  • Synopsis: Long ago, rain was not the only thing that held an effect over Pepa’s wedding. A jealous woman who had also loved Felix did too. Her name was Manuela and she spent years trying to figure out how to get her revenge on Pepa after being kicked out of Encanto. So what's the plan? Kidnap Pepa's three children just on Antonio's birthday. Now the Madrigales will have to desperately search for the kidnapped members of the family while Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio try to escape Manuela's clutches.

How Far Do These Roots Go Down? by GlitterFairy_21225

  • Recommended by: Tropemaster849
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Isabela can't pretend to be perfect. Bruno's Gift isn't quite so humbling. Luisa isn't able to do all the heavy lifting. The Madrigal Family... is still pretty dysfunctional. In which Abuela is still the matriarch, Mirabel is still ordinary in an extraordinary family, but the details are a bit different. Golden children aren't golden children and black sheep aren't black sheep. Power Swap AU.
  • Comments: A great story showing how different the family would be if they had different gifts, with especially with Isabela, who goes from Golden Child to Black Sheep since she got Bruno's original gift and how everyone deals with their different powers, as well as react to Alma's demands of them.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Isabela finds Mirabel's diary and realizes her little sister has been hurting much more than she knew. Maybe she hasn't been a perfect older sister, but that was all going to change.
  • Comments: A very touching story where Isabela slowly comes to realize that simply because Mirabel doesn't share her specific burdens, that doesn't mean she doesn't have them.
    • Highly recommend if you're looking for a story of Isabela realizing she hasn't been a great sister and wanting to change. It's very sweet.

Let It Die by feralrxccoon

  • Recommended by: EvilerThanThou
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Encanto was originally meant to be a safe place from the evils of the outside world. Unfortunately, when the Madrigals obtained their miracle, it became the least safest place imaginable. The Madrigals rule over the Encanto through fear and brutality, using their powers to reap retribution for perceived slights and use the people as though they were toys to be broken and discarded. All except for Mirabel. Having not received a gift, she is the only Madrigal who sees her family for the Tragic Monsters that they are and wants nothing more than to fix it.
  • Comments: A very dark and tragic, but captivating "Villain Madrigal Family" fic.
    • Miss_Tropes: Hard pass. While three of the fifteen chapters in the main story are well-written, I can't say the same for the rest of the story. I read through this whole au and have to say the author touches on themes of drug use, rape, incest, and csa with the "grace" and "thoughtfulness" of throwing a brick into a ditch. Much of what happens in the fic feels as though it happens purely for shock value with no thought behind it. Even the penultimate chapter, which is meant to be a sort of catharsis for the readers and the townsfolk, reads more along the lines of torture porn that doesn't truly want to commit to itself. To the author's credit they've tagged the au with "Dead Dove: Do Not Eat." However, if you're seeking a dead dove to eat, and the dove represents an Evil!Madrigal au, I couldn't recommend this less unless you're also looking for shock value gorn, carelessly written portrayals of csa, and Mirabel getting put through one hell of a Shoot the Shaggy Dog Story.
    • aara941: No. Simply... no. The three separated chapters are OK: Quick lecture, gives you the background to understand that this isn't a place of happiness. But then, you read the 15 chapters' fanfic and it feels like if the author was writting two different fanfics. There isn't timing for the story. In a moment, they're telling us that everyone on Madrigal's family are as cruel as Judge Frollo... And the next paragraph, the cruel members FEEL! Remorse, regret, guilt... And we don't talk about Worldbuilding, because suddenly doesn't have sense. The fic makes us understand that Encanto is a village hidden and locked for the entire world (For that reason, the Madrigal family has been doing that for decades)... But again, suddenly, a character turn herself and gets the electric chair (Even if Colombia hasn't authorized to do Death Penalty since the 1910s). This fanfic is basically made for the fans of "Faces of Death" and all the Mondo Films which were popular in Europe between the 60s and the 80s (Which would explain something, due that Italy is a place with tons of Mondo Films, and the author is Italian).

Distance Wakes the Heart Up bywhitebeltwriter

  • Recommended by: Puidwen

  • Synopsis: Not noticing the cracks in Casita during Antonio's party, Mirabel decides that what she needs is a little camping trip to get away from it all for a little while.
While she's gone her family realizes just how much of an impact her presence has on their day-to-day lives...and wonders what would happen if she never returned at all...
    or
A way-chilled-down version of the "Mirabel runs away" trope but with less angst and lower stakes.
  • Comments: A very humorous fic where Mirabel takes a solitary camping trip. Part of the humor comes from her enjoying it, but meanwhile, back at the Casita, her absence starts to cause chaos.

  • Synopsis: Mirabel had been through so much already, but when Abuela made all these false accusations against her, that was the final straw. She escapes from the confines of the Encanto, with the intention of never returning. With her parting words, the magic was finally gone and Casita fell, leaving what's left of her family in ruin. However, despite it all, Mirabel couldn't live with herself if everything came crashing down because of her. And so, through a selfless act of love and sacrifice, she finds a way to save the magic. However, the cost of such an act may be a way for her to finally achieve happiness. Her memory, a life that came before and her status as a Madrigal, has been erased and a new chapter is being rewritten with Mariposa as its lead. Mariposa finds a life outside of the Encanto, surrounded by people who love and care for her, something she never wants to let go of. As for the Madrigal family, their gifts and home had been saved, but they never forgot about Mirabel, especially the day she went missing. Eager to heal old wounds, and to seek forgiveness, they do everything they can to find her. But is it too late for the Mirabel they knew? Will Mariposa ever reclaim her former identity?
  • Comments: Mirabel runs away after an intense confrontation with Alma, however, instead of just the usual leaving the Encanto forever trope, something entirely new happens. Pretty much Mirabel is given the opportunity of a lifetime from her Abuelo Pedro, she has the chance to save the Encanto but it comes at a hefty price: her memories and her identity as Mirabel Madrigal. Meanwhile, the Madrigals are left to pick up the pieces and contemplate where they went wrong when it came to her. The story only has four chapters currently, but it's such a fresh take on the classic Runaway Mirabel trope. I love how the author takes the time to address everyone's thoughts on the matter, and they truly bring honor to the original characters.
    • Heavly recommend if you're a fan of the Madrigal family facing their flaws and wrongs when it came to their treatment of Mirabel. You can tell that they love her, but now they have to learn to accept their imperfections rather than running away from them.

  • Synopsis: What if Alma made a different promise the night the Miracle was born? What if, instead of vowing to protect her new home, she swore to always protect her children and family? How would things change if her children were her number one priority?
An AU where Alma prioritizes the well-being of her family over the needs of the village, resulting in a much happier and tight-knit Madrigal family whose powers are part of who they are in contrast to the Dysfunctional Family shown in the original movie where they're defined by their powers.

  • Crossover with: Criminal Minds
  • Status: Complete (main story; anticipating epilogue).
  • Synopsis: Shortly after Casita is rebuilt, the Madrigals get back work in the community. Until Camilo goes missing. Almost three years later, and the Madrigals gifts have long since faded from the pain of his disappearance. The BAU get a new case, as well as a lot more than they can chew when they find a delusional, kidnapped boy, and try to get him home.
  • Content Warning: Depictions of violence, frank discussion of sexual abuse, gaslighting (albeit unintentional), all-around plenty of hurt/comfort.
  • Comments: Not a combination one would expect, but the story is engaging and gripping enough to make it believable. The content is heavy but not tasteless, and the clash between the rational-thinking law enforcement and Camilo desperately trying to convince them his family's magic is real makes for some honestly harrowing conflict.

  • Comments: Super fun oneshot that shows what a friendship between Elsa and Isabela would look like in modern times. I also liked how it's implied Elsa is wiser because she's gone through what Isabela is struggling with in the past.

Isabela Madrigal is dumb with the Girls by Xpaze

  • Recommended by: Tropemaster849
  • Crossover with: Frozen (2013)
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Isabela/Elsa
  • Synopsis: Isabela was angry at the pile of preparations that her grandmother had ordered them to arrange. It was just illogical, why would someone from outside be interested in a small and abandoned valley? Still, one of those strangers may bring a little warmth and fullness from abroad to your heart.
  • Comments: A fun story based on the movie's favorite Crossover Ship. Isabela having a full-on gay meltdown over Elsa is beyond funny as is the rest of the family interacting with the Frozen cast and learning about their own adventures. Great read even if you aren't interested in the pairing.

It takes a very good look at how such an event could affect a child who was inadvertently told she's only as worthy of love as long as she has a magic power that's useful, and it also goes into a bit of detail on Alma's increasing sense of perfectionism.
