The Lost Splatoon Idol is an SMG4 fanfiction written by CVGW James, retelling the events of the videos leading up to SMG4's fifth movie WESTERN SPAGHETTI.

Like the original, Tari wishes to be as brave as her friend Meggy Spletzer. She may end up getting the chance when Meggy takes her to the Wild West to meer the latter's idol One-Shot Wren. But something seems fishy about all this...

You can read the story on FanFiction.Net here, or on DeviantArt here.

The Lost Splatoon Idol contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed with Dark Squid. While this fic’s version of her isn’t an outright villain, it’s hard to call her a nice person, since she gets into a fight with Green over whether beans are tastier than potatoes.
  • Adaptation Deviation: In Wren's flashbacks from Western Spaghetti, Wren wasn't wanted at Inkura's celebration party. Chapter 7 contradicts this with people still inviting Wren. Of course, he could have also been an Unreliable Narrator then.
  • Adaptation Expansion: We get to see much more of Wren's life in Inkopolis than what was shown in SMG4’s videos... very early in the story, in fact.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it seemed like Wren and his team are competing in Splatfest in the first chapter. Turns out to just be a Turf War.
  • Breaking Old Trends: The author's previous SMG4 retellings have at least one scene from what he's adapting in the first chapter, whether it's containing a change or two to the source material or played straight. Here, however, the first chapter contains an entirely new scene with entirely new characters. Furthermore, it would take seven more chapters until the actual retelling gets started.
  • Call-Back: The KelpBuds, one of the teams in Meggy's Destiny, are competing in the Tower Control challenge near the beginning of the story.
  • Call-Forward: During the Turf War at the beginning, Wren says "splat", which Meggy would later say in It’s Gotta Be Perfect before taking out Red.
  • Downer Beginning: The first eight chapters showcase Wren going from being on top of the world to slowly losing his title, his job, and even his family. And it only gets worse for him from there...
  • Foreshadowing:
    • In the ending of Chapter 1, Dan warns Wren not to let the fame go to his head. Needless to say, he was on point.
    • The theme for the Splatfest Wren would take on Inkura at is "Potatoes vs Green Beans". Potatoes would be a Trademark Favorite Food for those trapped in Wren's simulation. This also means the Running Gag of characters saying potatoes are "so good, you can eat them raw" shows up early in the story.
  • Original Character: Most of the teams Wren takes on are characters the author created that make no appearance in Splatoon or SMG4. Same goes for Wren's teammates, his instructor Kingfish, and his family members. Some family membersnote  barely qualify as original characters since they weren't created by the author, but by Makerboy 10, who has used them for his own works.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Chapter 7 ends with Wren and his wife Anetta about to have sex.
  • Sore Loser: As you would expect, One-Shot Wren, when he loses to Inkura in the beginning of the fic. To his credit, he manages to keep his composure as best he can before his Start of Darkness kicks in.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: On a news report, when talking about potatoes, Callie recites the "so good, you can eat them raw" phrase that Wren would have the victims of his simulation recite much later on.
Wren: At least someone agrees with me...
  • Tournament Arc: Before getting into the mini-arc the story is based on, the first few chapters describe Wren getting ready for his Splatfest match with Inkura... and losing.
