"The Evabon Saga
" is a name given to a series of Thunder Cats 2011 fan fictions by Jet556. It began with a story entitled "The Savage Heart" where it introduced Gard, an exiled Evabon living in the Wilderness (a place so vast and mysterious that all of the ThunderCats get lost in it.) Due to an Evabon's long lifespan, Gard inspired two sorts of legends: amongst his own people, Gard is viewed as a great hero while amongst the other peoples he is viewed as a monster. The series expanded from there, doing much world building and introducing new characters and locations.
Examples:
- Abhorrent Admirer: Brigid had two: Ekoto; the son of Piyamaradu, the Chieftain of Evabon; and his cousin Alaksandu. Ekoto eventually got over Brigid.
- Actually, I Am Him: When Gard and Tygra initially met the latter believed the former to be some long tormented victim of the former himself whom the latter perceived to be a monster. Upon realizing that Gard was not a monster and that by wanting to kill him he would have committed murder, Tygra breaks down into tears.
- Actually, That's My Assistant: A variation, if not a very amusing one. The kittens at first assume a four-legged beast called a Tolac is Gard. As it turns out, it is not Gard but rather his pet tolac Calaban.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Evabon come in a variety of colours such as red, green and yellow but all of our lead Evabon are grey skinned.
- Ancient Astronauts: Mumm-Ra to the Labinnac whom worship him and their race's leader the High Warlord even claim descent from him and his family share an astonishing resemblance to Mumm-Ra. The fact that this is Mumm-Ra that we're talking about adds an extra level of
Squick when you consider just what a claim implies. - Anti-Villain: What Gard was initially. His hostility towards the ThunderCats? He had a damn good reason. He had been hunted by the cats over the long centuries.
- Barbarian Hero: Many heroic Evabon fall under this however the term "Barbarian" is shown to be from a point of view. They are civilized in their own right but due to coming from an area of Third Earth called the Savage Area they are apparently perceived as barbarians.
- Barbarian Tribe: The Labinnac, another race native to the Savage Area. As of recently, there have been more sympathetic members of the race shown, even going so far as to establish is that they were corrupted by Mumm-Ra. As of recently, a heroic Labinnac named Davaak has been introduced as a companion of Gard.
- Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: A fashion that is implied to be popular with Evabon girls and young women from the amount of Evabon girls and young women who have their midriff exposed.
- Beach Episode: "The Strand" is one but due to the cast of that one-shot being Balor, Brigid and the Wily twins there is no fan service due to them all being eight years old. Due to Balor's attire being merely a loincloth and Brigid and Kit wearing similar outfits, with Brigid's having the difference of a detachable skirt for swimming purposes, there is no change into swimwear. All Kat really does is remove his shirt and roll up his pant legs. It is basically Beach Episode meets Limited Wardrobe.
- Big Bad Wannabe: Melyk is shaped up to the Big Bad of the "Siege of Wilusa" arc, only to be knocked out by Gard in "End to a Siege" and then killed by a blow to the head after regaining consciousness and immediately going into the final battle of the Siege.
- Bound and Gagged:
- This has happened a total of two times to Kit.
- As of "From Wilusa", Brigid herself has been gagged and with her own veil no less.
- Brother–Sister Incest: Openly stated with the family of the Labinnac's High Warlord. The most recent High Warlord Melyk is openly against it on the grounds of what centuries of incest between brother and sister did to his father in the long run.
- Carry a Big Stick: Zuvowang's weapon of choice is a club.
- Character Development: There is much of it and it would probably require a page of its own. Below are some examples.
- Gard starts off as what we believe to be the villain. The ThunderCats speak of him as if he is a monster. When he actually appears it becomes apparent that from his treatment over the centuries by the animals, the Cats in particular, Gard is more of an Anti-Villain. As the ThunderCats befriend him, he steadily moves on to become The Hero.
- Ekoto; son of Piyamaradu, Chieftain of Evabon; is initially a Jerkass towards Balor, being a bully towards the younger boy. When Balor comes to the aid of Piyamaradu against Mumm-Ra, this being while Balor is eight years old, Ekoto turns over a new leaf and begins to treat Balor with more respect and sometimes calls him "little brother."
- Composite Character: In-Universe example. It is stated the Evabon chroniclers have never really cared what the High Warlord of the Labinnac's name has been resulting in every High Warlord being combined into one legendary figure.
- Damsel in Distress: Brigid. Justified since she is eight.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Zuvowang and his family are Evabon with charcoal grey skin and they are among the heroes.
- Evil Brit: Jet has a tendency to mentally cast actors as voices of the characters sometimes. For Melyk and his predecessor Zet, he mentally cast Simon Callow and Patrick Stewart respectively.
- Fantastic Racism: A feature in the show that it is based on and these stories feature it as well. There is racism towards Evabon, the race that gets the most focus, and most of it comes down to how people perceive them to be barbarians.
- Four-Fingered Hands: The Evabon have these, another race called the Nomis are stated to have three.
- God-Emperor: The High Warlord of the Labinnac.
- Greater-Scope Villain: Mumm-Ra serves this role with the role becoming more prominent with each passing story. Initially, he was just someone in the background, the Villain of Another Story. Then he appeared in "Enter Procyon" where he tortured Gard's brother Procyon, who was cursed with a bloodlust, into one final rage for no real reason that ultimately leads to Procyon taking his own life. Due to the Evabon not really having a part in the Mumm-Ra war they didn't have much interaction with Mumm-Ra or his forces. He would appear occasionally but ever since the revelation that the Labinnac worship him as a god and that their royal family claims descent from him he has essentially become this type of villain since the Evabon don't really face him directly but rather his worshippers and descendants.
- Hero of Another Story: The ThunderCats, as should be obvious, but even characters such as Gard sometimes get this as there are times when the Evabon we were introduced to is not our lead hero.
- In a Single Bound: An adult Evabon is able to jump at least thirty feet.
- Loincloth: Worn by Evabon men and boys, some wear trousers though.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Balor, a descendant of Gard, and Brigid, a descendant of Zuvowang, are in one. They are eight and this only causes Kernunnos, a friend of theirs who is eight years older, to wonder why he does not have a marriage arranged and where his mate is.
- Proud Warrior Race: The Evabon. Despite some initial prejudices, the Evabon get along quite well and respect fellow Proud Warrior Race the Cats.
- Punny Name: "From Wilusa" introduces a young caracal named Caracalla. Yes, Jet did actually use a name that had the word "Caracal" in it but beyond that it actual fits the Roman-esque city state that was Thundera by using the name of a Roman emperor.
- Rouge Angles of Satin: Happened in the early stories, with Gard's right eye being described as "right" instead of "white" from blindness.
- Shout-Out:
- To John Carter of Mars with white apes appearing in "The Savage Heart", some Evabon having a DC Comics Barsoomian style of dress and "Tolac" being "Calot" spelled backwards.
- In "The Savage Heart" Gard recites the "Many men become their fathers" bit from Kingdom Come.
- Shrouded in Myth: To the non-Evabon, Gard is this with there being stories of him that are not consistent and seem nothing like what we actually see. Tygra for instance had been in search of a monster to kill, upon meeting Gard and realizing that he would have committed murder he breaks down in tears.
- Villain of Another Story: What Mumm-Ra was prior to ascending to Greater-Scope Villain.
- Villain Protagonist: Donalbain and Pumyra in the aptly named story "Villain Protagonist."
