Fanfic / Self Insert Evangelion

Go To

Self Insert Evangelion is a Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic written by luckychaos.

A guy from the real world lands in Evangelion, but is less than happy about it. While desperately searching for a way back home, he worries that he might not survive a far more brutal Angel War than what he expected. The Angels are the least of his concerns, however, when he tries to change things for the better and realizes he's woefully out of his depth.

It can also be found on Spacebattles Dot Com here. Unfortunately, the fic is considered dead, as it has not updated since June 18 2015.

Self Insert Evangelion contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Ken inadvertently hits one of Shinji's right before the battle with Ramiel, due to lying about being Rei's friend and lying to Shinji about everyone believing in him.
    • He also triggers Kaji's by bringing up Misato, when telling Kaji to turn down Asuka.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Ken tends to experience these after having a vision of Angelic life.
  • Creepy Child: Rei. It is also one of the main reasons why Ken gives up trying to befriend her as well.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Shamshel vs Ken in Unit-00.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ken, especially in his inner thoughts. Toji and Misato also have their moments.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Ken dreams about what would happen if each Angel succeeded in their task of merging with Lilith and Adam after defeating them, which results in the creation of a new species based on themselves, which elaborates on their culture and their beliefs, then ending with their mysterious extinction by some cataclysm.
  • Genre Deconstruction: Aside from the usual mecha tropes deconstructed by Evangelion, this fic aims to do this for the Self-Insert Fic genre as well.
  • Dynamic Entry: Asuka attempts this on Ramiel. It does not work.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Shinji forgives Ken for lying to him and Rei, but says that he can't trust him until he proves himself to be an actual friend.
  • It's All About Me: Zig-Zagged. While Ken does wish for the characters to be happy, he originally used them as a means to an end to get free from the NGE universe. He still has bouts of selfishness, but after being given a "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Shinji, he finally realizes that the people that inhabit the world are actual people, though it still takes awhile for that truth to settle.
  • Lack of Empathy: Due to Ken believing that everyone around him is not real despite being in their universe, he believes is obligated to not feel attached to any of the characters. This results in him shutting everyone out and focusing only on his own survival.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ken's attempts at trying to "fix" the character's of NGE are half-assed at best, resulting in him seemingly coming out of nowhere and remedying a situation that would've been fine without his input. This especially comes back to bite him when he lies to Shinji and Rei, resulting in Shinji being livid with him afterwards.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Ken has one when he is around during Shinji's infamous "falling on Rei" scene, at which point he promptly leaves the apartment. While Played for Laughs, it actually is an important point Shinji makes during his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Ken, where he brings up that he just ran away instead of helping Shinji or making the situation less awkward.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Shinji gives Ken one of these after he catches Ken lying to him and Rei.
  • Rousing Speech: Ken tries to give one to Shinji, about how everyone believes in him, though he doesn't actually believe the words he's saying, and is only telling them to boost Shinji's confidence and self-esteem. It comes back to bite him when Shinji gets into an argument about how Ken lied to him, but Ken does admit that he personally believes in Shinji.
  • Self-Insert Fic: The entire premise, but also serves as a deconstruction of them as well, showcasing how someone well adjusted-would not only feel out of place, but also view the characters as fake rather then real people.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The Angels in general, who have all been upgraded from their canon counterparts. Most notable so far is Sachiel, who managed to get inside the Geofront.
    • Shamshel now has more whips and is far, far more aggressive.
    • Ramiel is now it's Rebuild version, and as such can morph it's shape and fire much more powerful lasers.
    • Gaghiel now evolved to walk on land.
    • Israfel is now thousands of much smaller, but still bigger then a human, versions of itself, with one black one being the leader of them.
