Shinji the Casanova is a 1999 Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfiction by Strike-Fiss, who also wrote Higher Learning.

Shinji falls unconscious while battling a strange Angel, with the result that Eva-01 goes berserk and eats its enemy. In the aftermath of the battle, Shinji awakens and finds out there is a voice in his head belonging to the Angel whom his Eva just ate.

Said Angel reassures Shinji that it does not intend to take over his body or something like that. It only wants to get out of his head and go back home, which will hopefully happen when Shinji undergoes his next synchronization test. In the meantime, the Angel offers to help Shinji solve one of his main concerns. As it turns out, Shinji's new body tenant is a very special Angel.

Tropes:

• Age Lift: Shinji is fifteen, one year older than his canon self.
• Alternate Universe Fic: Cupid's arrival happens between Shinji and Asuka's first kiss and Leliel's attack, and the story diverges from that point onwards.
• Apologises a Lot: While talking to Shinji for the first time, Cupid finds himself agreeing with Asuka: Shinji apologizes way too much.
• Artistic License – Religion: Cupid is the Roman god of Love, not an Angel from Christian belief. Cherubim, who the story depicts as low-ranked Angels, are the second highest rank in the angelic hierarchy according to Christian and Islamic theology (second lowest rank in Jewish belief, though). Also, Cupid refers to himself several times as "Cherub" or "Cherubim" indistinctly as if they were synonyms instead of singular and plural forms.
• Attack the Tail: When they fight, the Angel uses its scorpion tail to stab and slash Unit-01 until the Evangelion goes berserk and grabs its tail.
• Bat Out of Hell: Cupid's physical form looks like a walking, four-legged, blood-red bat with a scorpion tail. It is only one-tenth the size of an Evangelion, which means it is still huge. Subverted, since it ends up being friendlier than its brethren.
• Batman Cold Open: The story opens with Shinji fighting an Angel and Unit-01 going berserk and devouring the hapless creature. This scene is placed before the title.
• Beware My Stinger Tail: Cupid's body has a long tail tipped with a massive scorpion barb.
• The Casanova: Shinji gets Casanova training from Cupid and sets out to seduce Asuka as accidentally and involuntarily seducing all his female classmates.
• Death Glare: Surprisingly, Shinji can hurl heated, scary glares.
  A few people turned on him, wondering why he just chuckled out loud, but returned their eyes to the front of the board when the young Ikari shot them his Look of Doom. The fact he hardly ever used that look prompted a quick response.
• Eating the Enemy: Unit-01 eats the Angel after going berserk. Cupid has strong opinions regarding that tactic.
  Cupid: "You ATE me, Shinji! COME ON! Who EATS their opponent?"
• Embarrassing Nickname: Shinji's friends start calling him "Lord Iron Balls" after seeing him teasing Asuka without suffering dire consequences. Eventualy, Shinji's whole class join them. Shinji does not appreciate it.
  Cupid: "Lord Iron Balls, eh? Should we put that on your locker-tag?"
  Shinji: "Oh shut up!"
• Freudian Slip: Asuka makes a tiny slip of the tongue after Misato puts the image of a naked Shinji Ikari in her head.
  Asuka: "Grr… I bet they're laughing at me! Damn Shinji and his damp, hard… NO! NO! Get out of my head!"
• Grand Theft Me: Subverted. Cupid's soul ends up in Shinji's body, but he did not want it to happen, and he is not interested in controlling Shinji. He is only waiting until he can be flushed out of Shinji's body and go back home.
• Gratuitous Japanese: Shinji attaches -san to Cupid's name occasionally.
• Headphones Equal Isolation: In the aftermath of the battle, Shinji confines himself in his room to put on his "Sad, Sad Shinji Part Two" tape and wallow in his misery quietly.
• Heartbreak and Ice Cream: After seeing Shinji and Rei talking, Asuka becomes so jealous and upset that she goes back home and spends hours wolfing down several bowls of chocolate ice cream.
  It had been hours since Asuka got home. Almost five on the clock. "Where IS he?" she fumed as she ate another bowl of ice-cream. It was chocolate chip. Not really her favorite, but if she didn't occupy her mind with something, she was going to go insane.
• I Need a Freaking Drink: After seeing Shinji singing and dancing down the hall, wearing socks, a long white shirt and sunglasses, Misato decides she and Asuka need a beer.
  It was dead silent in the apartment once again. Misato silently got up, walked to the fridge and grabbed herself a beer. Without asking, she grabbed one for Asuka as well. Both of them downed their respective beers, cringed at the taste, then continued to stare at the wall.
• Jaw Drop: Asuka and Misato's jaws drop when Shinji starts singing and dancing early in the morning.
• Let's Wait a While: After getting together, Shinji and Asuka agree they must wait until they are at least eighteen to not risk a teen pregnancy. Nonetheless, the idea of waiting for two years is driving them crazy.
• The Matchmaker: Cupid helps Shinji win Asuka over.
• No Antagonist: There is no big villain or enemy to beat except for poor Cupid in the prologue.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
  • Shinji's classmates pass out and scream in fear when they see Shinji and Rei making paper airplanes.
    Even more students began to pass out as they saw Rei continue to do something other than stare out of the window. "ARGH! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!" someone yelled, but was ignored.
  • Hikari raises one eyebrow when one girl flirts with Shinji...and Asuka throws a furious glare at her instead of getting angry with Shinji.
• Quit Your Whining:
  • Cupid first makes its presence known when Shinji starts whining about nobody finding him attractive. He returns when Shinji puts on his second "Sad, Sad Shinji" tape, demanding that his host listens to something else instead of continuing wallowing in self-pity.
  • When Asuka rants about nobody making a big deal when she kills an Angel, Misato grumbles her female ward complains too much.
• Secret Relationship: After getting together, Shinji and Asuka intend to keep their new relationship secret for a while. It does not last long, though.
• Sweat Drop: A large sweat drop forms on Shinji's head when the Angel quickly switches from berating him for eating him to apologizing for stabbing his skull.
• This Is Gonna Suck: Ritsuko whispers in horror when Shinji loses control, and his robot goes berserk:
  Ritsuko's eyes were wide. "Oh no..." she whispered. "Eva-01's going into..."
  "Berserker Mode!"
