Miraculous: Rise of Anatis (also available on Tumblr) is an AU of Miraculous Ladybug by SassyDuckQueen.

In this AU, Luka Couffaine becomes the holder of the Ladybug Miraculous during an attack by an akuma named Princess Justice. Up until this point, Paris was being protected from these supervillains by Aspik, the holder of the Snake Miraculous, and Ryūko, the holder of the Dragon Miraculous. When both of them are captured by Princess Justice and in consequence release all the previous akumas they had captured prior to this, Master Fū decides there's no choice but to release the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculous despite the risk. Encountering Luka during Princess Justice's assault, Master Fū entrusts the Miraculous of the Ladybug to the young man, along with the task of defending Paris and reclaiming the stolen Butterfly Miraculous from the evil Hawk Moth.

Currently stands at 66 main chapters, a series of snippets still connected to the main story, 3 specials, a crossover, spin-off sequel by Naruwitch (Note, not everything in the spin-off is canon towards the fic) and a prequel story called Miraculous: Legend of the Phoenix. Author's artwork also available here. Warning! Will contain spoilers!

This work contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Deviation: Several akumas make earlier appearances than in canon.
    • Several people get akumatized for the second time in this fanfic (third if you count Princess Justice's attack), particularly Lady Wifi and the Dark Owl.
    • The Miraculous found in the New York Special is the Falcon Miraculous instead of the Eagle Miraculous since the author believed the Falcon represented freedom better than the Eagle, which in this story, represents Wisdom.
    • The New York Special also reveals that Master Fū is still around, compared to canon where in the Season 3 finale he loses his memory and relinquishes the Miracle Box to save Ladybug and Chat Noir from Hawk Moth.
    • Miracle Queen and Loveater are also changed from the Bourgeois family to The Rossi family. Loveater is Mr and Mrs Rossi and resembles a snake person with two heads instead of a floating two-face monster. Miracle Queen herself is Lila Rossi and instead of controlling miraculous holders, she can control almost anyone including Anatis and Lady Noir through her music.
    • Several OC Characters/Heroes/Akumas have been added to the story.
    • Original Spirits and Kwamis have been added to the story.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • In this AU, we are introduced to Aspik and Ryūko in the first chapter, while in canon Miraculous Ladybug, both heroes don't appear until Season 3.
    • In canon, we are first introduced to Merging Miraculous in Kwamibuster, but in Style Queen, Anatis merges the Ladybug and Snake Miraculous to become Red Mamba.
  • Adaptational Expansion: A lot more lore on the Miraculous is created in this fanfiction, and all of the Miraculous will be used at least once.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • Luka receives the Ladybug Miraculous and becomes Anatis.
    • Marinette receives the Black Cat Miraculous and becomes Lady Noire.
    • During the events of Sapotis, Luka chooses Juleka to wield the Fox Miraculous. She becomes Culpeo.
    • When Mayor Bourgeois is akumatized into Malediktator, Anatis entrusts the Bee Miraculous to Rose Lavillant, who becomes Abeille.
    • Ivan Bruel receives the Turtle Miraculous when Anansi attacks. He becomes Leatherback.
    • Lady Noir also gives out a number of Miraculous during the story. She gives Nino Lahiffe the tiger miraculous, allowing him to become Sabertooth and Max Kante the Rooster miraculous, which he uses to become Apollo.
    • Anatis and Lady Noir also merge Miraculous together to create new forms. Anatis uses the Snake Miraculous and the Ladybug Miraculous to become Red Mamba and he merges the Horse Miraculous and the Ladybug Miraculous to become Sorrel. He also merges the mouse miraculous with the fox, the cat, and the ladybug miraculous after using the mouse's power to make smaller clones of himself. They are known as Foxkin, Catkin, and Bugkin.] [[Spoiler:Lady Noir merges the Bee Miraculous with the Cat miraculous to become Dark Bee and later merges the dragon with the cat to become Black Dragon.
    • Anatis also gives Chloé Bourgeois the horse miraculous, which allows her to become Valkyrie. Luka himself uses the horse miraculous, becoming Appalo during the chapter Mob Boss to escape his abusive stepfather.
  • Adapted Out: Several canon episodes are glossed over for plot reasons, as well as several moments in some episodes. A prime example being Nathaniel's outburst at being 'tricked' by Marc and Marinette.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Adrien attempts to defend Lila against Anatis after he yells at her, Anatis turns on him and asks him that if he didn't think lies could hurt, then how the hell did Lila come up with Volpina? She had to have come up with the idea from somewhere. His Oh, Crap! expression when he realizes the Miraculous Book is missing says it all.
  • Ascended Extra: Several side characters get larger roles in this fanfiction, especially Luka, Juleka, Rose, and Ivan.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Several examples of this. Luka is usually a fairly chill and laid-back guy, but if someone either threatens or hurts his family and friends, or intentionally hurts innocents, he'll easily be on the warpath until the culprit is caught and put to justice. He also has a habit of getting super sassy and sarcastic with some villains. Examples are:
    • The first real example of this is in the chapter Destroyer when Hawk Moth makes his first semi-public appearance. Anatis immediately turns the tables on Hawk Moth's accusation, calling the man out as the real villain and making a promise to Paris that he and Lady Noire would stop him and protect Paris.
Hawk Moth: People of Paris, I am Hawkmoth. Anatis, Lady Noir, listen to me now! Surrender the ladybug earrings and the ring of the black cat! You have done even damage to Paris as it is.
Anatis: (After slow clapping) Bravo, Hawkmoth but let's be honest here. You're the real bad guy so don't try and reverse the roles. You turned these innocent people into villains long before I turned up but I was hoping to talk to you as well. You see I have my own message. No matter how long it takes, we will find you and you will give us your miraculous! Paris, I have a message for you too! I want to make a promise to you right here and right now. No matter who wants to harm you, me and my partner Lady Noir will keep you safe!
    • For his rant to Kagami and Adrien see the Didn't Think This Through tag.
    • In Prime Queen when Nadja tries to get Anatis and Lady Noire to admit they are a literal couple, Anatis puts an end to the interview and both he and Lady Noire walk coldly out on the interview. Nadja notices too late that she went too far when she sees Anatis is clenching his fists and glaring at her.
    • He chews Principal Damocles and Chloé out as Anatis and Luka respectively in Despair Bear. See The Reason You Suck for more details.
    • For his talk with Kagami in Riposte, see Driven by Envy.
    • The aftermath of Captain Hardrock he officially declares war against Hawk Moth.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Multiple examples of this from Luka, from the first chapter seeing his sister and mom frozen on their boat to Reflekta when Chloé calls his sister a loser. He is completely devastated when Juleka gets akumatized.
  • Big Entrance: Most of the akumas tend to make quite an entrance when they first appear.
  • Blatant Lies: Lila. Enough said.
  • Boring, but Practical: In Gigantitan Anatis comes up with a rather simple plan of making a fake lollipop compared to Lady Noire's complicated 'playpen plan' with the Eiffel Tower. The battle is easily one after this.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • In Zombizou, Marinette openly expresses to Mme. Bustier that she used to think she was the best teacher in the world. That is until Lila came along. After that, she didn't ask for Marinette's side of the story when she was framed. She let Principal Damocles expel her in front of everyone and almost always took the bully's side. She seemed more interested in avoiding drama than actually solving the problem.
  • The Cameo: In the Brumus and Lady Ombre special chapter both the main universe Ladybug and Monarch briefly appear when Lady Noir transforms into Ladybiquity to stop Monarch from attacking alternate universes.
  • Cutting the Knot: Compared to Ladybug in canon, a lot of Anatis's plans to defeat the akuma are a lot more straightforward. The most noticeable being his plan to defeat Gigantitan.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • When Aspik and Ryūko return their Miraculous out of jealousy, Anatis points this out to them in Kung Food.
Anatis: No! What's not fair is you basically leaving me to fight Hawk Moth alone!
Aspik: You've managed fine. And now you have Lady Noir.
Anatis: And what if I hadn't? What if she never turned up? Did either of you even think about the consequences of your actions? Did you think about what could have happened if I couldn't handle myself?! What if Hawk Moth had gotten the Ladybug Miraculous?! What if Paris had fallen?! Is that what you two wanted?!
    • Just like in canon, Anatis lectures Chloé/Queen Bee after she crashes a subway train to show off.
Anatis: We are not a team and we never will be!! You paralyzed the metro driver, Queen Bee! You used your power to create this situation just to make yourself look good!
Queen Bee: Who cares? We saved them, didn't we?
Anatis: And what if we hadn't huh?! What if me and Lady Noir hadn't helped you?! You could have killed everyone on that train and gotten yourself hurt?! It was completely irresponsible!
  • Driven by Envy:
    • Out of jealousy of Anatis's skill, despite being a brand new hero, and being picked for one of the most powerful Miraculous, Aspik and Ryūko return their Miraculous and quit being heroes themselves.
    • In Riposte, Kagami is akumatized partially out of jealousy over Juleka becoming a new hero with the Fox Miraculous rather than Anatis coming to her or Adrien for help, both being experienced holders, though with different Miraculous. Anatis points this out after defeating her, chastising her hypocrisy.
Anatis: I don't care if you're jealous or if you think you're the best choice. This is what you have to live with. You gave up Longg and decided to distrust me. I have told you how it felt but you have done nothing to prove yourself to me and now you have the audacity to try and claim you know what is best for Paris! That is not how this works!!
  • Foreshadowing: In Reverser there seem to be a couple hints of this. One with Nathaniel asking if he'll get a Miraculous to help the heroes and Luka's explanation on Marc's heart song.
  • Heel Realization: Adrien experiences this when Lila steals a book that belongs to his father, which results in him being pulled from school. At first, Adrien didn't think Lila's lies were hurting anyone, but it was only when he was personally affected by them that he realized he was wrong.
  • Humiliation Conga: So far, Hawk Moth has suffered several defeats, some of his akumas being defeated in the most hilarious and embarrassing ways possible.
  • Irony: Despite Anatis outing Lila as a liar in front of Alya, the journalist is still willing to listen to her about 'Anatis's Diary' and even goes as far as to call Marc the liar when she realizes that it wasn't real.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Chloé has been improving her attitude greatly by the time Miraculer rolls around, but that doesn't stop her from very furiously calling out Alya on her posting the Anatis and Lady Noire Oblivio kiss. Despite her tone though, she's technically correct with how inappropriate and dangerous this action is.
Chloé: You don't even realize you're in the wrong!
Alya: How am I in the wrong?! I have every right to post the photo!
Chloé: Expect you don't. Need I remind you that you need permission to post an image of a person or persons when they are the subject which they are in that photo? Oh, and you didn't get their permission.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Reversed as in Dark Cupid while Anatis is under the akuma's influence, Lady Noire kisses him to snap him out of it. This also occurs in Oblivio when the two kiss before regaining their memory.
    • Another example occurs during Miracle Queen. Miracle Queen orders Anatis to attack and take Lady Noir's miraculous from her, forcing the hero to attack her. She goes as far as to order him to kill Lady Noir. Luckily, Anatis breaks from her control with help.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: During Heroes' Day, after Hawk Moth is practically cornered by Team Miraculous and Mayura saves him with her Sentimonster, he uses the opportunity to retreat instead of continuing his attack.
  • Meaningful Name: All of the Miraculous holders, both heroes and villains have meaningful names for their personas.
    • Anatis: The name of a Ladybug subspecies, and is also the largest species of ladybug in Europe.
    • Lady Noire: Literally means 'Black Lady' in French.
    • Culpeo: The species she gets the name from is also called 'Zorro Culpeo''. Zorro is the name of a famous vigilante who defends the weak against corrupt officials and other villains.
    • Abeille: Literally means 'Honeybee' in French.
    • Leatherback: The name of an endangered sea turtle species, recommended by Myléne after Ivan saves her from Anansi.
    • Aspik: Aspic comes from the Greek 'Aspis' meaning viper. Since Adrien knows multiple languages, this isn't super surprising.
    • Ryūko: The name comes from Ryū, which means 'dragon' and ko meaning 'child.'
    • Hawk Moth: A real name of a species of moth common in Europe.
    • Mayura: Mayura is a Sanskrit word for peacock which is one of the sacred birds of Hindu mythology. Ironically, Mayura is the masculine term for the word. Mayuri is feminine.
    • Hao Feng, Khnurn, Alpheus, Sir Rene and Toutai all have this. Each name either means rebirth, reborn or reincarnation or linked into it.
  • Point of Divergence: Unlike in canon, where Ladybug doesn't expose Lila as a liar right away, Anatis shares this knowledge with a large number of people after defeating Lila's akuma. Of course, in canon, Ladybug had no way of knowing that Lila was such a huge threat, and in this fic, Lila has already gotten Marinette expelled and isolated from most of the class, further convincing Anatis to take action against her. Now that more people are aware of Lila's nature, they'll be less likely to fall for her tricks in the future, though from what we've seen in Chapter 35, some people still need to learn...
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: While Alya is obsessed with finding out Anatis's identity, she fails to realize until chapter 35 that doing so could ultimately be the worst thing she could do. Whether this is enough to sink in for her remains yet to be seen.
Anatis: I've made it perfectly clear that I don't want my identity revealed but you insist! Do you realize what would happen if my identity was revealed to all of Paris, including Hawkmoth? He would target my family, Alya, and that would be on you! Do you understand? Back off from my identity!
Alya: But... Paris deserves to know?
Anatis: Oh, well, by that logic so does Hawkmoth! I don't want my identity known or anyone else on my team and you will respect that! Is that understood?!
    Alya: Y-Yes, sir...
  • Red Alert: In the New York Special, it is revealed that after Heroes' Day, Anatis and Lady Noire came up with a coding system for how dangerous the akumas and amoks are. They even have colors specifically for if Hawk Moth or Mayura show up personally.
  • The Sociopath:
    • Just like in canon, Hawk Moth is no less evil in this fic. How far the author will take his fall into darkness, we'll see.
    • Lila Rossi is much eviler then her canon counterpart.
  • Throwing the Distraction: In the New York Special Hawk Moth attempts this by having Mayura create a sentimonster of Robustus to keep the Parisian heroes distracted from his activities in New York.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Several examples:
    • First time happens in Kung Food when Adrien tries to rejoin the fight in an Aspik costume. He had not received his Miraculous back, so he had attempted to help knowing he could get seriously hurt and make it harder for the heroes to fight the villain. Eventually, Anatis got fed up with Aspik's antics (and bad puns) that he duct-taped him to a chair and later duct-taped his mouth as well. Anatis later gives both Adrien and Kagami a hard lecture on responsibility and how foolish they had been to let their jealousy get the better of them.
    • In Reverser, Alya almost delusionally insists that Marc lied about his fiction work being Anatis's real diary, ripping the journal in the process of trying to obtain it. It's only after Anatis lectures her and makes her promise to not pursue his identity anymore that she actually apologizes.
    • Ryuko's recklessness puts her in this category too.
