Go To

Realm of Entwined Science and Sorcery - Academy City is a crossover between Fate/Grand Order and A Certain Magical Index written by ArmoredCoreNineBall.

Shortly after the Chaldea crew solved the Camelot Singularity, they detect a new Singularity that leads to a city of advanced science called Academy City. Ritsuka Fujimaru and his partner Mash Kyrielight investigate and quickly make contact with Touma Kamijou, who mystifies them with his Imagine Breaker, an ability in his right hand that allows him to fight Servants despite being human. Touma explains that the city is under siege by an army of monsters, causing many to evacuate, while some Stray Servants either help or hurt the city.

The story is now complete with 19 chapters.

Tropes

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Queen Medb is obsessed with Touma, who wants nothing to do with her.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Queen Medb, who is a warrior queen, becomes more and more attracted to Touma whenever he fights and whenever she hears stories of his feats.
  • Anachronism Stew: When Saten and Uiharu meet Charles Babbage, Uiharu questions both how he's alive but also why he looks the way he is. Babbage admits to not knowing how he ended up looking like this since he certainly never looked like that in life, and just states he ended up like that.
  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba: When Kakine is informed that Touma is a Level 0, he scoffs and says, "If he's a Level 0, I'm the King of England!"
  • Annoying Arrows: Queen Medb summons a soldier who pumps Mephistopheles full of arrows so they can grab and interrogate him. Once Ibaraki rescues him, he easily pulls the arrows out and his Healing Factor fixes the damage.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism:
    • Despite being a time traveler who has worked with several Servants, Ritsuka finds the idea of alternate worlds hard to believe at first. Da Vinci calls him out on this.
    • Despite working with the Servant Sakata Kintoki to fight the monsters, Mikoto Misaka does not believe in magic and is skeptical of Ritsuka and Mash's explanations.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Index did not understand Nasuverse magecraft at first, but picks up on it fairly quickly and finds the similarities to the magic she is used to when Da Vinci gives an explanation. This allows her to use Spell Intercept to disrupt Mephistopheles.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite her actions towards Kintoki, Tamamo says that Shuten's interest in more than she would admit to teasing him, to wanting to mate, to even getting his bones. Tamamo stating if Kintoki is with them, then Shuten will listen. Only after she messes with him and the group of course, but afterwards she states he can get her heart to race.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Mehpistoles actually manages to 'break' Touma, an incredibly rare feat, by putting Touma in a position that either gets him, Index, or Othinus killed, or compromise his own ideals and morals. While the Caster dies in the end and loses, he laughs madly as ultimately he still got one over Touma to decide to kill him and vanishes away in victory while leaving Touma a mess.
  • Bash Brothers: Both Archer Emiya and Cu can be seen as this.
  • Back from the Dead: The Number 2: Teitoku Kakine is back, and not Beetle 6. To boot, as an Avenger class Servant as well.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Ritsuka and Mash arrive in time to help Touma against Queen Medb and her army.
    • Kintoki arrives in time to help Mash and Anti-Skill defeat a chimera.
    • When the party is surrounded by Darius III and his skeleton army, Queen Hippolyta shows up to help, then Mash manages to summon Archer EMIYA and Cu Chulainn from Chaldea.
    • When Kakine prepares to kill Touma, Accelerator comes in.
  • Bloody Murder: Queen Medb makes liberal use of her ability to create soldiers from her spilled blood.
  • Born Unlucky: Touma is always complaining about his bad luck. When the party goes to a maid cafe, a waitress spills hot coffee all over him, giving him severe burns. EMIYA and Cu comment his luck seems to be even worse than their own.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Touma says being attacked by Queen Medb doesn't even make it into the top ten craziest things that have happened to him.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Levinia Birdway and Lessar are mostly indifferent to Academy City being attacked and try to convince Touma to abandon it and live with them.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Othinus and Index both get jealous of any girl near Touma like Mash and Queen Medb.
    • Just like in her home series, Kuroko Shirai doesn't like Touma being near Mikoto.
    • Much to Mash's surprise, this is averted with Queen Medb. She says she is not jealous of the girls near Touma because she is completely confident she will win in the end. However, she starts to lose her confidence and reacts badly when it looks like Shuten Douji is hitting on him.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Dr. Roman becomes very happy when Touma tells the story of when he rejected godhood because he wants to be normal and not give up his family and friends. This is likely because Dr. Roman is actually the Servant King Solomon, who decided to become a regular human.
    • Cu Chulainn becomes respectful of Touma when he sees that he's a tough fighter who rejects Queen Medb's advances, just like him.
    • Queen Medb and Lessar quickly become friends because they are both perverts. Medb even says Lessar has her permission to have a threesome with her and Touma.
  • Composite Character: Saint Martha has her Rider appearance but her spirit origin is based on her Ruler incarnation with all her skills and stats related to that version.
  • Cool Big Sis: Queen Hippolyta acts like this to everyone, to the point Kintoki refers to her as Big Sis.
  • Cue the Flying Pigs: Ritsuka and Mash cannot believe that in this world, Elizabeth Bathory is actually a good singer.
  • Decoy Getaway: In chapter 8, Accelerator's fight with Kakine ends with the reveal the latter was really a Dark Matter copy, with the real Kakine having already fled with the enemy Caster.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After Queen Medb is defeated, she agrees to help the good guys.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Shortly after Archer EMIYA is summoned, Ritsuka calls him EMIYA. He gets annoyed and says to call him Archer.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: Even though his Spirit Origin had been destroyed by Kakine, Karna manages to remain manifested long enough to fire Vasavi Shakti at the Number 2 Esper, who had been worn down a bit earlier fighting his way out of EMIYA's Reality Marble.
  • Dope Slap: The party gets attacked by an army of skeletons. Queen Medb summons Caladbolg and destroys them, only for Darius III to show up and summon more skeletons. Touma tells Medb to use Caladbolg again, but she says she has to wait for two hours before she can use it again. Touma chops her in the head. After the battle, Touma admits that he lost his temper and apologizes.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Mash decides to drive the party to where Shuten Douji is, but she keeps flooring it, hitting things, and driving on the sidewalk. She is oblivious to everyone screaming at her to slow down and get off the sidewalk. By the time they arrive, all four tires have popped and the car is wrecked. Romani points out just because she has the Riding Skill, doesn't mean she knows how to drive safely.
  • Dueling Hackers: Uiharu fights over the control of an unmanned Academy City Power Armor against another hacker. It escalates when the opposing hacker threatens to post panty shots of her online.
  • Eating Optional: When Touma cooks for the party, EMIYA scoffs and refuses the food, saying Servants don't need to eat so it is pointless. Cu and Medb eat it anyway.
  • Evil Duo: Both Mephistopheles and Ibaraki are working together to cause mayhem, the latter with Caster to see his 'fireworks'. Both also mention of working with an even bigger group that is against Academy City.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: According to Da Vinci's calculations, this new Singularity pulled Academy City from its original world into their world. Their worlds cannot coexist, so if they cannot find the Singularity's Holy Grail soon, everything will be destroyed.
  • Fatal Flaw: Overconfidence. This is Kakine's greatest flaw. As while he is indeed powerful and capable of taking on Chaldea and their current Servants, his negligence of them and underestimation allows both Touma and Cu Lancer to harm him a lot, sending him into a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Fight Clubbing: Gaius Julius Caesar organizes an illegal underground fight club with Beowolf as his greatest champion. With the help of Saint Martha, the party shuts it down.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: Magic users like Levinia Birdway and Lessar can sense the massive amount of mana in Servants.
  • For the Evulz: Mephistopheles is this, killing people just for fun with Chaldea even mentioning he'll help people if only to slowly see them snap and enter despair. Though he becomes angry when he meets someone like Index who doesn't rise to his taunts and considers her beneath dirt.
  • Honor Before Reason: When Touma and Chaldea go to a cafe and meet Tamamo, she states she knows the Demon Terrorist Core, but won't tell them as Shuten is part of it. While she doesn't mind them fighting her, Tamamo doesn't want to to betray her trust. Luckily, the gang compromise and promise to help out.
  • Have We Met Yet?: Ritsuka and Mash greet the Servants whom they have met in previous Singularities, but the Servants have no memory of those events and have no idea who they are.
  • Hero of Another Story:
    • The chapter 4 interlude features Shiage Hamazura having his own adventure in the city with his own group of Servants, which includes Robin Hood and Hector, during the crisis in Academy City.
    • In chapter 7, Levinia and Lessar mention that something has been attacking Europe and many of the characters are fighting it off.
    • The chapter 7 interlude sees Uiharu and Saten trying to recover one of of Academy City's power suits, only to encounter Charles Babbage.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation:
    • Kintoki admits that he isn't very smart and has no idea what is going on, saying he is only good for fighting.
    • When the Chaldea crew are impressed by Touma's accomplishments, he insists he isn't anything special. Touma does it again when the crew compliments his cooking.
  • How Is That Even Possible?: Ritsuka and Mash are left stunned when Touma fights and defeats Queen Medb because as far as they can tell, he's an ordinary human and humans cannot harm Servants. He then explains about Imagine Breaker.
  • I Can't Sense Their Presence:
    • Presumably because of Imagine Breaker, Touma's life force doesn't show up on Chaldea's instruments. Dr. Roman on Mission Control thinks that Ritsuka and Mash are talking to themselves until he is able to get visual.
    • Partial example. The instruments can detect the life force of Espers, but since they are calibrated for mana and not AIM (psychic energy), the instruments register them as regular humans no matter how powerful they are.
  • I Gave My Word: The group defeats, ties up, and interrogates Queen Medb. After she promises not to attack Touma again, he lets her go, saying he can tell she's one of those people who take their honor seriously.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Touma tells the party that he doesn't like fighting and getting into adventures, but at the same time, he can never ignore people in trouble.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Queen Medb becomes obsessed with Touma when he refuses her advances, just like Cu Chulainn did.
  • It Amused Me: Shuten was already willing to help the heroes with stopping Mephistopheles. But once she saw Kintoki with them, due to her nature as an Oni and her own personality, decided to mess with them and have them destroy the fight club. Her way of teasing him.
  • I Work Alone: Accelerator blows off the party when they try to get him to work together, saying he only does what he wants.
  • Jerkass: The Number 2 Kakine shows himself to be this, constantly insulting everybody.
  • Killed Off for Real: Considering one has to be dead to enter the Throne of Heroes, it seems unless Kakine has different circumstances, then he really has died.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • Touma is reluctant to try to fight Ibaraki because he can see she is extremely strong, fast, and skilled, and he has a poor track record of fighting opponents with those qualities.
    • Shuten Douji says she did not try to fight Mephistopheles herself because his bombs would have blown her to bits before she could get close enough to attack him.
    • Aleister Crowley opts to leave dealing with Solomon to Chaldea, since any victory over Solomon would likely kill or cripple him in the process leaving Crowley unable to achieve his goals.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Acqua of the Back, Kaori Kanzaki, and the Amakusa Catholics eventually arrive in Academy City, and they attack Ritsuka's allied Servants. Due to only fighting evil Servants back in Europe, they assumed all Servants are evil.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Touma had no idea what happened to Acqua of the Back after their last meeting, so when Lessar and Levinia mention how he has almost recovered from fighting Archangel Gabriel, he gets confused.
  • Magi Babble: Similar to his home series, whenever the Chaldea crew try to explain about magecraft, Servants, etc., Touma complains that he can't understand what they are saying.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Index is one to Mephistopheles because she can use her Spell Intercept to take control of his bombs and turn them against him.
  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • While he's not the strongest Servant, Mephistopheles has a good silver tongue and convinces Ibaraki to join him for his 'fireworks', getting her power to aid him and even Shuten since she goes where Ibaraki goes. Tamamo saying that thanks to him, not even Shuten can boss Ibaraki anymore and the only way to get both out of the group attacking Academy City is to defeat him.
    • Wile not as much as Mephistopheles, Shuten shows this as she herself admits to knowing of the clown's trickery with Ibaraki and wanted it to happen all so it can attract Kintoki to her. Where once he's dead, she can 'warmingly' make her forget all about him. Though she admits Mephistopheles had gotten a bit more advantageous than she thought, and just wants him dead for messing with her.
  • Never Be a Hero: When Mikoto sees Touma helping to fight the monsters, she irritably tells him to go home and leave it to the professionals. He doesn't listen. In her case, it is because she is worried that he will end up in the hospital again.
  • Noodle Incident: The party finds that Tamamo-no-Mae, Tamamo Cat, Elizabeth Bathory, and Gawain have opened a maid cafe. The party asks what led to this, but they say it is a long story.
  • The Nose Knows: Shuten Douji can detect Imagine Breaker by scent, saying it smells different from divinity, oni-kind, or humanity.
  • Not Quite Dead: Archer EMIYA blasts Darius III with Caladbolg and seemingly vaporizes him, but it is revealed Teitoku Kakine saved him at the last minute.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When Touma brings Ritsuka and Mash to his apartment, Index and Othinus become jealous and Othinus says this is the first time he brought a boy home and she didn't know he swung both ways. Touma quickly clears that up.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Both Touma and Queen Medb talk about how he was able to outrun her chariot.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: After a waitress spills hot coffee on Touma, Elizabeth Bathory and Tamamo-no-Mae complain that was not the first time one of their waitresses had an accident like that.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Queen Hippolyta is slightly displeased that people only know of her as the person Heracles defeated for his Ninth Labor, saying she had a life before that.
  • One-Hit Kill: Since Queen Medb's soldiers are magical constructs, one punch from Touma's Imagine Breaker is able to destroy them. Imagine Breaker can also destroy Darius III's skeleton minions and the monsters with one punch. However, since Servants are constantly fed mana by either their Masters or the Holy Grail, Imagine Breaker doesn't destroy them, but it is able to hurt them.
  • One-Man Army: Touma is able to charge into Queen Medb and Darius III's armies by himself and wipe them out with Imagine Breaker without taking any hits.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • The party asks Kintoki to help them talk down Shuten Douji. As soon as he hears that it involves her, he drops his boisterous attitude and agrees to help.
    • While Cu admits to not knowing Medb all that well since he died, he finds her current attitude and actions with Touma to be off and unlike her. He then shrugs it off believing it's not his business.
  • Outside-Context Problem: The Chaldea crew say they have never seen anything like Imagine Breaker and are mystified that it allows Touma to ignore spells and punch out Servants despite being an ordinary human.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: After hearing stories of Touma's adventures, the Chaldea crew comment that Touma's achievements are way cooler than theirs.
  • Pitiful Worms: After defeating Queen Medb, they try to question her, but she angrily calls Ritsuka an insignificant worm.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • When Archer EMIYA and Cu Chulainn volunteered to be summoned, Dr. Roman and Da Vinci evidently didn't tell them the party had allied with Queen Medb, as Cu is completely surprised when he sees her and briefly antagonizes her. The author later commented that it simply slipped their minds to tell them.
    • Touma gets injured, but Imagine Breaker prevents healing spells from working on him. When Othinus confirms his right arm grows back whenever it is cut off, Cu proposes that they cut it off so they can heal him. Touma panics and says that is a bad idea, but since he does not clarify why (he has an Invisible Thing/dragons that live inside him and are unleashed when he loses Imagine Breaker), they think he is just being a whiny baby and a coward.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Queen Medb is infuriated when Touma says he has never heard of her.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Shuten Douji says as an oni, she enjoys killing people, but she'll work to stop threats that would kill everyone because if everyone is dead, she won't have any entertainment.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: Touma, Othinus, Queen Medb, and Ritsuka all call out Index on never making herself useful around the apartment. She responds by biting Touma.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: While Aleister Crowley notes he could probably beat Solomon/Goetia, he acknowledges that any victory would leave him either crippled or dead in the process and unable to acomplish his true goals.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Kakine outright says he doesn't care if the Singularity destroys the world as long as his enemies die first.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Kakine declares this when being brought low by Chaldea and humiliated. Stating he doesn't give a care for them and wishes to simply kill them all, Aleister, and everyone who tried using him as a tool. Even if it means taking the entire city to hell itself.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Medb is a royal queen from the past. When facing numerous skeletons, she uses Caladbolg to wipe them out, and summons a small army to aid against Darius III.
  • Reverse Harem: What Medb wants. Starting with Touma, Cu, and Ritsuka as well if he fully catches her eye.
  • Sacred Hospitality: Queen Medb believes in this. She is a polite guest while in Touma's apartment and is offended when she learns Index takes advantage of his hospitality without contributing anything in return.
  • Seen It All: When the Chaldea crew explain that they are from an alternate world, Touma and Othinus believe them because they have a lot of experience with alternate worlds.
  • Share the Male Pain: Tamamo-no-Mae says if she finds whoever is responsible for the monsters, she'll nail them with her Polygamist Castration Fist, which makes the males in the party shudder.
  • Ship Tease: Despite their rough start, Touma and Queen Medb actually start to get along well and it's clear that her initial attraction to him and his refusal of her advances is morphing into something considerably more genuine, with Touma gradually becoming somewhat more receptive to her flirtations. It gets deeper when she comforts him after Mephistopholes tortures him with a Sadistic Choice based on his Thou Shall Not Kill tendencies. Their relationship culiminates with the two of them forming a Geas Bond that will allow Medb to stay in Touma's world after Chaldea departs, with the whole process being very (intentionally, on Medb's part) intimate and sensual. They even have an Almost Kiss moment!
  • Shoe Slap: When Touma asks Levinia to take her shoes off before entering his home, she gets annoyed and throws her shoes at his head.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis:
    • Othinus and Queen Medb constantly argue.
    • Though they can work together in battle, Archer EMIYA and Ch Chulainn constantly argue.
  • Smug Super: Teitoku Kakine is constantly insulting everybody and bragging about his powers. He condescendingly tells Archer EMIYA that blocking his Caladbolg at least forced him to try a little bit. He boasts that he could kill all the heroes with ease if he wasn't in a hurry.
  • Spotting the Thread: Touma mentions that he has demonstrated Imagine Breaker to the ability testers and to the public several times, but since he does not emit an AIM field, he was ranked Level 0. While Touma took this at face value, Queen Medb realizes something screwy is going on in Academy City because anybody competent would have seen the value in Touma's Imagine Breaker and given him a high Level, not dismiss him as a mere Level 0.
  • They Would Cut You Up: Dr. Roman tells Ritsuka and Mash that they probably shouldn't tell Da Vinci about Touma because he is concerned that she would dissect him to try to understand Imagine Breaker. Da Vinci later learns of Touma and starts obsessively questioning the limits of Imagine Breaker.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Dr. Roman realizes that once the business with the Singularities is finished and humanity is restored, he'll have to tell Olga Marie Animusphere's family that she is dead. He is not looking forward to it.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: When Touma takes Ritsuka and Mash to his apartment, Dr. Roman calls and says the area is the perfect spot to connect to a leyline and make a summoning circle. Touma starts thinking that with his terrible luck, the summoning circle will be inside his apartment and will mess it up. He is pleasantly surprised when the perfect spot turns out to be outside.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Touma is this obviously. Despite knowing Heroic Spirits aren't human and the danger some of them pose, he refuses to kill them and wishes for another way. He even refuses to kill Mephistopheles even after he killed several people. While Romani, Ritsuka, and Mash respect his choice and won't force him, Romani admits they might still do it if it comes down to it. This is weaponized by Mephistopheles later on with a Sadistic Choice where Touma is forced to chose between either murdering him or committing suicide in order to save both Index and Othinius. Thankfully, Hector arrives and guts Mephistopheles before Touma runs out of time to chose, but the whole ordeal still leaves Touma very shaken.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • After Ritsuka and Mash rescue Touma who was cornered by Queen Medb and her soldiers, they tell him to stay behind them. He says he has a score to settle with Medb and charges forward. Thinking he's an ordinary civilian, they warn him to come back or he will get himself killed, only to be shocked when he destroys a soldier with one punch and engages Medb.
    • Mephistopheles assumes Touma is an ordinary human and tries to kill him with a bomb, only to get shocked when Touma makes it disappear with Imagine Breaker.
    • Kakine does this to Chaldea. It costs him by being hit back hard.
  • Victory by Endurance: Kakine is finally defeated when his reckless use of his powers makes him run out of mana, making him vulnerable.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Kakine goes berserk when Archer and Cu manage to hurt him and then Touma negates his powers.
  • Wham Line: Dr. Roman tells the group he has detected where the Singularity's Holy Grail is. It is inside the Windowless Building, which likely means Aleister Crowley has it.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Kakine yells this to Touma when Touma manages to grab him and negate his powers.
  • Who Dares?:
    • When Touma punches Queen Medb in the face, she yells, "How dare you lay a hand on me!?"
    • When Cu manages to hurt Kakine, he yells, "You miserable little rats dare to do this to me!?"
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Index introduces herself with her full name, Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Ritsuka, Mash, and Dr. Roman ask what kind of name is that.
  • Wrecked Weapon:
    • Shuten Douji decides to test Imagine Breaker by swinging her sword at Touma. He blocks it with his right hand and the blade shatters on contact. Shuten finds she cannot will the blade to repair itself.
    • Touma punches Lu Bu Fengxian's halberd and shatters it.
  • Wrong Context Magic:
    • When Index sees magecraft in action, she says it is different from the kind of magic she is used to. However, with time and some pointers from Da Vinci, she becomes able to analyze and counter it. Index, Othinus, and Touma are mystified when Servants are explained to them.
    • The Chaldea crew gets confused by Imagine Breaker and espers.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: Not all the Servants summoned in Academy City aid in its defense. Saint Martha herself calls out Beowulf for not helping and instead using his superiority as a Heroic Spirit to beat up regular people just for the chance to face a strong esper. He himself states unless someone is stronger than him, he won't do it. He's last seen being dragged off by her.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
    • The Chaldea crew are in disbelief when Othinus tells them of some of Touma's feats like blocking Gungnir, which is supposed to be an Unblockable Attack and Always Accurate Attack, with Imagine Breaker.
    • Touma learns from Cu that Medb was the one who got him killed in his original life. Touma cannot believe that he acts so nonchalant about that.
    • When the Chaldea crew is introduced to Levinia Birdway, Dr. Roman automatically assumes she is like Helena Blavatsky, an old woman who looks young via magic. He is left in disbelief when they are informed she is only twelve.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Touma says Queen Medb's overly flirtatious attitude reminds him of Lessar. Funnily enough, the two actually end up getting along.
    • Touma decides Saint Martha deserves her title as Saint because she is just as powerful as Kaori Kanzaki.
