It stars the "Mon 4" (Machoke, Magikarp, Minun, and Plusle), four school-aged Pokémon who go on adventures.

Now with a Recap page!

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Carnivine repeatedly berates and steals from his daughter Camellia.
  • Accidental Good Outcome: In I, Snubbot, Minun the Child Prodigy builds a Robot Kid named Snubbot, who sees him as her father because he was the first thing she ever saw. While he intended to give her a personality, he did not know she would do this, but he is happy and flattered when she does.
  • Adults Are Useless: All of the adults in young Mewtwo's life were useless in helping him deal with his bullying problem.
  • Afraid of Clowns: In New Year's Birthday, Lairon dresses as his clown persona Steele and performs at Eevee's birthday party. His toddler cousin Aron becomes frightened by his appearance and hides under a table, crying Tears of Fear.
  • Baby's First Words: "New Year's Birthday" ends with Eevee saying her first word: "Flare".
  • Baffled by Own Biology: In Early Evolution, Machop evolves into Machoke overnight. When he looks at himself in the mirror, he's so startled at the sight of his new form that he spits out his toothpaste. He asks his mother Machamp if this means he'll have to stay home from school, but she says there's nothing too unnatural about evolving early. It's all one big metaphor for puberty.
  • Big "OMG!": Minun shouts a huge "OH MY ARCEUS!!" when their makeshift zipline starts to fail.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Magikarp yells one of these at Machoke when he is annoying him, only for it to trigger an avalanche.
  • Christmas Episode: "Mon in the Moon" takes place near Delimas.
  • Death of a Child: Three shown in "Mon in the Moon":
    • Tyrogue and Chimchar assault Poipole and throw her onto the ice, which breaks and she drowns.
    • After witnessing them murder Poipole, Mewtwo kills Tyrogue and Chimchar with an Angst Nuke.
  • Debating Names: In I, Snubbot, after the Snubbull robot is activated, Minun realizes he hasn't given her a name yet. Machoke suggests calling her Destructo because he thinks it's cool, but then Plusle suggests the name Snubbot. The others decide they like that better.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Most of the Pokémon in the series are named for their species.
  • Fear Is Normal: In Fear Today, Gone Tomorrow, Lairon and Gyarados watch The Banana Cream Pies Movie (a stand-in for The Banana Splits Movie) and are horrified by the movie's violence. Gyarados initially tries to hide how scared she is, but Lairon isn't fooled, and he reassures her, saying that a lot of people are afraid of horror films. He also admits that the film's violence disturbs him as well, so she does feel a little better knowing that she's not alone in this regard.
  • Fooled by the Sound: In Early Evolution, the newly-evolved Machoke accidentally snaps a pencil. Togedemaru hears the cracking sound and freaks out, mistaking it for thunder (even though he's an Electric-type).
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: The Mon 4 and Mew give this to Mewtwo after hearing his tragic backstory, saying that while he's been through immeasurable pain, it's not an excuse to throw the planet into the sun.
  • Glasses of Aging: In Growing Apart, when Carla finally reunites with her father Carter for the first time in years, the now-elderly Carter is mentioned to have received glasses, as well as wrinkles and a cane, during the time of her absence.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs:
    • Generally, "Arceus" is used in phrases that would normally contain "God" (ex. oh my Arceus, Arceus knows how long, etc.)
    • "The straw that broke the Camerupt's back" (the straw that broke the camel's back)
    • "Jack Shiftry" (jack shift)
    • "Grumpig-back ride" (piggyback ride)
  • Ignoring by Singing: Magikarp does this when Machoke threatens him with Grotle and Prinlup spoilers.
  • I Have No Daughter!: Carnivine disowned his daughter Camellia for leaving the family business to become a doctor.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: In "New Year's Eevee", Machoke Fell Asleep Standing Up as soon as he insisted he wasn't tired.
  • Karmic Death: Tyrogue and Chimchar are killed for murdering Poipole.
  • Moving Right Through: In "The Easter Bunnelby", Flareon sees the Third-Degree Three at Sun Stone Square. Since they often bully Flareon, he winces in anticipation, but they ignore him and go directly towards the other kids so they can pick on them.
  • New Baby Episode: "New Year's Eevee" focuses on the hatching of Espeon's egg.
  • New Kid Stigma: In "Mon in the Moon", it is shown that when Mewtwo enrolled himself in a new school, he was ostracized by all the students because they considered him a freak for being a Pokémon they had never seen before. Even the Luvdisc everyone bullied hated him. Tyrogue and Chimchar were the cruelest to him. This (along with the death of his only friend Poipole at Tyrogue and Chimchar's hands) led to him becoming misanthropic and hellbent on the destruction of the world.
  • Oh, My Gods!: "Oh my Arceus!"
  • One-Steve Limit: Some Pokémon who are the same species as others are given unique names to avoid confusion (ex. Carnivine, Carla, and Camellia).
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Carnivine believes in this, and enforces it on Carla and Camellia.
  • Taken for Granite: Minun gets a mild case of this after taking an energy blast for Plusle. He gets better.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Carla gets this reaction in a flashback in "Growing Apart" when she learns she's been betrothed to Carnivine.
  • You Mean "Xmas": Christmas is called Delimas.
