Not a prince provides examples of the following:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Lesso calls Dovey both "Princess" and "My Dove" regularly, and by the end she starts to call her "My Love".
  • The Big Damn Kiss: At the end of the story, Lesso pulls Dovey into a deep and passionate kiss, starting a relationship between the two.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Lesso wears masculine clothes like pantsuits and spends most of the story wearing what is described as something a prince wears. Dovey is a fairy godmother and only ever wears dresses. However, the two are best friends and in love with each other, with the ending strongly implying that they get together at the end.
  • Master Swordsman: Lesso is revealed to be an expert at sword fighting and even hides one in her cane.
  • Office Romance: Both Lesso and Dovey work at the School for Good and Evil, with Lesso being the Dean of the evil school and Dovey being the Dean of the good. However, this doesn't stop the two from falling in love with each other and even kissing at the end.
  • Straight Gay: Dovey only shows interest in a female, Lesso, yet is also quite feminine and otherwise nothing about her screams gay.
  • Sword Cane: Before she begins teaching Dovey how to sword fight, Lesso reveals that her cane also has a sword hidden in it.
  • Villainous Crush: Lady Lesso is the Dean of the School for Evil and happily teaches students to be evil villains. However, she develops feelings for Professor Dovey, the Dean of the School for Good, who trains students to be heroic heroes of fairy tales.
