Go To

Irrational Fear is a fanfiction of The Loud House by the same guy who wrote Peeking Through the Fourth Wall and Shrinkin' Lincoln.

It is about Lincoln finding out that Lisa is afraid of storms while trying to find her for help with his homework.

Lisa is embarrassed about being afraid of storms because she knows that there is nothing to be afraid of but is afraid of them anyway, so Lincoln reassures her that irrational fears are normal. It has a sequel called Irrational Fear 2: One Year Later.

Irrational Fear provides examples of

  • Big "NO!": Lisa shouts, "NO!" when Lincoln first suggests they go upstairs.
  • Delayed Reaction: Luan suggests asking Lisa's roommate where she is and it takes a few seconds for Lincoln to realise that it's a joke and Lisa's roommate is one-year-old Lily.
  • Embarrassment Plot: The fic is about Lisa being embarrassed that despite her Child Prodigy status, she's afraid of storms.
  • Fear Is Normal: Lisa is embarrassed by her Fear of Thunder, feeling it's too irrational. Her brother, Lincoln, consoles her and tells her that fear is not a sign of low intelligence. In its sequel, her friend Darcy is afraid of snakes, and Lisa gives her the same words of wisdom Lincoln gave her last year.
  • Fear of Thunder: The whole plot is about Lisa being afraid of thunder, and it seems like Lily is too because Rita and Lynn Sr. had given her earmuffs so she wouldn't be spooked by the storm).
  • Hurt/Comfort Fic: Downplayed. The fic certainly is about Lincoln comforting Lisa, but she's not hurt, just scared.
  • Not So Above It All: When Lisa sucks her thumb, Lincoln remarks that she's "more of a toddler than she lets on".
  • Not So Stoic: Lisa is normally The Stoic, but in this fic, her fear of storms causes her to hide, give a nervous chuckle, and stammer, then she laughs when finding out Lori is afraid of puppets and cries when she's embarrassed.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Lincoln realises that "something isn't right" when Lisa stammers and is unsure when she'll be available.
  • Still Sucks Thumb: When Lisa falls asleep in Lincoln's arms, she starts sucking her thumb.
  • Twitchy Eye: Lisa has the "emotional" as opposed to "insane" variation when her eye twitches in fear.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: In addition to Lisa (and Lily) being afraid of storms, Lori is also afraid of puppets.

One Year Later provides examples of

  • Dark Is Not Evil: Monty is a snake and half of Lisa's class (and Miss Allegra too) are scared of him, but he's very friendly and never bites.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Mitchy doesn't take Monty the snake away from Darcy despite the latter's fear, and he's chastised for not being "sensitive" enough. However, he wasn't intending to be mean; he was just confused as to why Darcy was afraid even after he told her that Monty was harmless.
  • Layman's Terms:
    • Lisa describes her invention as a "travel-sized miniaturization apparatus: street name, 'shrink ray'".
    • When Mitchy doesn't know what "intellectual" and "rational" mean, she explains, "Fear comes from your emotional core - in layman's terms, your 'gut'."
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Darcy's stuffed penguin is named Penny.
  • Original Character: The story makes up several of Lisa's classmates, including a girl named Sasha and a boy named Mitchy, plus Mitchy's pet snake, Monty.
  • Shrink Ray: Lisa brings a shrink ray to school for show and tell and demonstrates it by shrinking a tomato.
  • Unexpected Kindness: Lisa fears that Miss Allegra will scold her when she asks to "have a word" with her, but she compliments her instead.
  • Unconventional Food Usage:
    • David powers his alarm clock with a potato.
    • Lisa demonstrates her shrink ray on a tomato.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Half of Lisa's class, Darcy included, plus Miss Allegra, are all afraid of snakes.
