Violet Evergarden has grown greatly over the last few years, but she will soon find that there is still room for her to develop and bloom, as she gives birth to a new vision of herself and the world she lives in.

Gestation is a Violet Evergarden fanfiction by Johnny Mueller that focuses on Violet's life undergoing a political project as she finds herself pregnant with Gilbert's children and the changes that come from both aspects.

Gestation contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Violet's father was physically and mentally abusive to her and her siblings.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: While Violet in canon treats Dietfried with the respect afforded by his military rank, here she is openly resentful and hostile towards him, hating him for his "training" of her and his general callous demeanor.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Violet and Gilbert
  • Country Mouse: While Violet has lived in Leiden for some time, part of the fic focuses on the ways that her current life lies in (often negative) contrast to her deeply rural upbringing, with Violet often enjoying the experiences and opportunities living in the city gives her.
  • Domestic Abuse: Violet's father was physically abusive to her mother.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Violet has six other siblings.
  • Parental Substitute: Violet views Claudia as being something of a father to her.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Violet is 16 at the time that she becomes pregnant.
  • War Is Hell: Any references to the war that Violet participated in are all negative, from the direct (the amount of lives lost and damaged caused) to the indirect (the rise in child labor as a result of men being drafted or killed in the war).
  • Wrong Side of the Tracks: Violet visits the slums of Leiden several times and often notes about the disparity between them and the rest of the city.
Whenever people talked about the beauty of Leiden but only mentioned its historic buildings or its Parliament center, Violet wished to show them what was on the other side of that beauty. The slums of Leiden had a heavy cloud throughout them, partially due to all of the smoke that flowed this way due to the wind, but also because it was clear there was little that could be done to improve them beyond what the residents were capable of. The only time police would be seen here was if there was a raid going on or if they wanted to have some fun harassing some of the residents and public utilities were always underfunded, under pressure, and overvalued. The people here did what they could but it was clear it was often a losing battle.
