Maribel Hearn was born with the quirk that could see and touch the boundaries of existence. Now pressured into the life of a hero, she finds more than she hoped for. For better or worse. What mysteries clouded the past of this future?
—Summary of the story

Future After Failed Realms is a crossover story taking place in the future of Touhou Project, a world where children don't smile...

Except the fact that people have powers called quirks, superhero like in the comics is not only an existing occupation but also a respectable, and that children actually smile in this world. For this is not only the world of Touhou but also My Hero Academia.

The story focused on the journey of Maribel Hearn as she attends the UA high school and learns along with Class 1-A to become a hero. However, schoolwork and villains are not the only challenges that she would face, for Maribel discovered that there are things beyond even the scope of the world full of superpowers...

Future After Failed Realms contains examples of:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Before she could manipulate the border with her quirk, Maribel was bullied for her "useless quirk" and often suffered nightmares that cost her her sleep.
  • Berserk Button: Izuku's timid personality infuriates Maribel to no end as it reminds her about her past self.
  • Call-Forward/Foreshadowing: Maribel is slowly becoming the youkai of boundaries, Yukari Yakumo.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: Maribel's power explicitly messes with her head when she uses it, making her meaner, less inhibited, more calculating, and overall much more like Yukari.
  • In with the In Crowd: Subverted as part of Maribel's backstory. While she experienced a huge surge in popularity in middle school when her quirk matured from seeing to manipulating boundaries, she never let it get to her head or come between herself and Renko, who remains her closest friend. Ultimately, things resolve into a sort of middle ground. Maribel spends less time with her friend than she'd like due to them attending different schools, and her popularity has become much more moderate now that she's attending U.A.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Invoked by Maribel to make herself seem more mystical and out of place among her jumpsuit-clad peers. She chooses a more civilian-style dress reminiscent of Yukari's "work attire" as her hero costume.
  • Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: Maribel's power is quadratic compared to her classmates' linear.
  • Lunacy: Maribel feels more energetic when the moon is out. So much so that during the UA Sports Festival, she uses her boundary manipulation to turn day into night for the sake of getting a power boost from the moon.
  • Meaningful Rename: When it comes time to choose hero names, Maribel (unsurprisingly) picks Yukari Yakumo.
  • Muggle Best Friend: While Renko isn't quite a muggle, she still fills the role in most other regards, being Maribel's closest friend from before her quirk matured, helping her experiment with her newfound abilities, and acting as The Confidant about the aspects of said abilities she's concerned about.
  • Nonindicative Name: Downplayed. Kasen Ibara, the Horned Hermit, does have horns but she's not a hermit; she's an oni. In fact, it's doubtful that she's even a hero.
  • Parasol of Pain: When Aizawa suggests adding a weapon to her hero attire, Maribel's first thought is to add one of these.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: One of the symptoms of Maribel's changes is her unusually fast hair growth.
  • Pressure Point: Maribel's hero costume is designed to stimulate certain pressure points on her body to reduce the nausea and headaches caused by her quirk.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: Downplayed. Word of God confirms that Yukari Yakumo is someone that Maribel Hearn would become one day. While Yukari obviously cannot be considered a hero, she's not without some redeeming qualities.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Or rather, purple; the color that Maribel's eyes turn into when she uses her quirk. During the final part of Sports Festival, it becomes permanent, which is a sign that she's slowly becoming something else.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Maribel has gone up several badass levels over the course of the story. In the first chapter, Maribel is only able to create gaps for teleportation, and doing so quickly leaves her exhausted and nauseous. A few chapters in, she starts experimenting with it and using it for other things. By the time of the Sports Festival, she is able to change day into night and keep it that way for the duration of her battle with Bakugo. All without an inordinate level of exhaustion and with no nausea whatsoever.
  • What Have I Become?: More "What am I becoming?" in Maribel's case. Between her ever-strengthening quirk and the way it affects her mind, she grows increasingly concerned about what she's turning into as the story progresses.
  • Wild Card: Doremy Sweet doesn't care much about whether she's giving a help to a hero or a villain. She even says that she's a "villain to some" when Shigaraki asks about her.
  • Wrong Context Magic: It's hinted that Maribel's quirk might be not be a quirk at all, but something else entirely.
