Capacitance is a My Hero Academia fanfic (inspired by Total Command and What's in a Hoard?) by MightyMackinac where main character Izuku Midoriya acquires a particularly powerful Quirk.

Izuku was five years old, and his mother Inko feared her son may be Quirkless, the 1 in 5 people that did not develop a Quirk: given his wish to become a hero, not having a Quirk would be quite the blow. However, during a confrontation with his friend Katsuki to stop him from bullying a boy, Izuku accidentally absorbs one of Katsuki's explosions - discovering he has a Quirk that allows him to absorb energy and then emit it through his body with great effect.

Ten years later, Izuku and Katsuki train and work out their Quirks with the aim of attending U.A., the foremost Hero Academy in Japan. A chance encounter with All Might brings the latter's attention to Izuku, seeing in him his potential successor as the holder of One for All - not knowing the revolution Izuku is going to bring...

As of March 8th, 2020, the story started to undergo a full rewrite.

Capacitance has examples of the following tropes:

    open/close all folders
    Original Version
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Both Izuku and Katsuki were quite badass in canon, but here, between the 10 years of training on their own and then three more with All Might (two of them with One for All) they are stronger and are better fighters.
    • Ochako also gets several levels as she joins Izuku and Katsuki's training after the entrance exam, and after Izuku and Ochako become official.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • While he's still quite abrasive, Katsuki is more affable thanks to Izuku's constant influence keeping him down to Earth.
    • Thanks to everyone's efforts, Shoto is less cold towards the rest of the group.
    • Aizawa, while insisting on everyone giving their all, never threatens to expel anyone.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Uraraka is straight in canon and attracted only to Izuku, while here she is bisexual and attracted to both Izuku and a good part of the girls in U.A.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Izuku has Energy Absorption, which allows him to absorb electromagnetic and kinetic energy in his body, as well as Energy Release, that allows him to release that energy in the form of blasts. A secondary effect is making his body stronger and more resistant, as well as making it so he can get by with just a couple of hours of sleep per day.
  • Age Lift: U.A. becomes a university, making all the main teenage characters 18 instead of 14.
  • Autobots, Rock Out!: Izuku joins the Battle Training Class to the tune of Thunderstruck.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Izuku retains this trait, but is capable of applying it a lot better to his Quirk and those of others, allowing him to come up with new ideas and ways to use them.
  • Benevolent A.I.: Avalon, the A.I. Mei creates for Izuku's suit. It is based on herself, and she can communicate with it to check on Izuku and, if she feels up to it, tease him.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Even without actively using his Quirk and before the training with All Might, Izuku is strong enough to send a fridge flying ten feet away with a punch. This is because Energy Absorption has been strengthening his body as he grew up and kept absorbing energy.
  • Flying Brick: With the proper application of his Quirk, Izuku can become this. Interestingly, when he flies, it's more like Iron Man.
  • Gender Flip:
    • Kirishima goes from Eijiro to Eiko.
    • Aizawa also becomes a female.
  • Gone Horribly Right: When Izuku finishes bonding with One for All and this adapts to Energy Absorption, suddenly One for All begins to actively absorb all energy around Izuku, causing a patch of grass to completely die off and freezing the air around him. All Might is forced to hit Izuku in the back in order to give him enough energy to stop this effect.
  • Made of Iron: Thanks to Energy Absorption, Izuku is capable of tanking through anything. The only ones that have managed to knock him down are All Might and the USJ Nomu.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Izuku, thanks to all his training.
  • Not a Morning Person: Ochako is barely able to remain awake when she begins her training with Izuku.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Shinsou managed to pass the Entrance Exam to join the Hero Course from the beginning.
  • Oh, Crap!: Katsuki's reaction to learning Izuku has a fusion reactor strapped to his back. Fortunately, Izuku points out that it's not a fission reactor, and a fusion reactor is a lot safer.
  • The Paragon: Izuku. His influence ensures Katsuki becomes a lot nicer, he gets Shoto to open up, shows Shinsou that his Brainwashing Quirk will make him a great hero...
  • Passing the Torch: After the Entrance Exam, All Might meets with Izuku and tells him that, after passing One for All to him, eventually he will lose his power and then it will be up to Izuku to be the hero. Izuku, after noticing there is a connection between him and All Might, finds a way to supply energy to him so he can retire whenever he wants, and also increase the time he can spend every day in his muscle form.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Thanks to having a Quirk, Izuku is a lot more open and carefree, while Katsuki has a lot less of a trigger.
    • As Izuku meets All Might three years before going to U.A., he has a lot more experience with One for All before he begins his classes.
    • Izuku meets Mei when seeking someone that can make him a gauge for his energy absorption.
    • Aoyama, Koda, Mineta, Ojiro and Sato don't make it into Class 1-A. They are replaced with Kendo, Shinsou, Shiozaki, Tetsutetsu, and Tsunotori. Aoyama joins Class 1-B, but the status of the others is unknown.
    • Instead of meeting during their first class, the students meet at the dorms a few days before, helping them become closer
  • Polyamory: Izuku, with Ochako and Mei, with Momo on the verge of joining and other girls considering it.
    • According to the story's tags, the girls who Izuku will get with, along with the three mentioned above, are Nejire Hado and Setsuna Tokagenote .
  • Power Armor: Izuku's first suit is compared to a mobile weapon platform by Principal Nezu. Among other things, it has a fusion reactor on its back.
  • Power Copying: Thanks to his equipment, Izuku is capable of analyzing the energy emission of certain Quirks and replicate it.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Izuku's plan for the Heroes vs Villains exercise. First, he spooks Kaminari and Shiozaki with some explosions, and then Shinsou tricks them into answering to him saying "Pizza delivery", allowing him to easily capture them while Izuku blows a hole under the bomb.
  • Rescue Romance: While Ochako already liked Izuku when she met him before the exam, him vaporizing the 0-pointer to rescue her makes her attraction for him even more blatant.
  • The Resenter: Downplayed. Initially, Shinsou thinks Izuku is going to dominate the Heroes vs Villains exercise, but Izuku comes up with a plan that allows Shinsou to efficiently use his Quirk and tells him he can be a great hero, prompting Shinsou to drop his resentment.
  • Ship Tease: Between Izuku and Ochako pretty much since they meet in the Entrance Exam until they get their results - the moment in which he asks her out and they gain a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Shout-Out: After the Entrance Exam, when Izuku decides to accompany Ochako home and separates from Katsuki, they have the same exchange Steve and Bucky did in Captain America: The First Avenger:
Katsuki/Bucky: Just make sure you don't do anything stupid.
Izuku/Steve: How can I? You are taking all the stupid with you!
  • Supreme Chef:
    • Katsuki and Izuku working together make very delicious food.
    • Itsuka Kendo is also very good in the kitchen, having learned from her mother, who is a professional cook.

    New Version
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • All-Might is not only Inko's old school-time crush, he also becomes Izuku's biological father.
    • Rather than the one-sided adversarial relationship they had, Enji and Toshinori are friends here. Mirai (Sir Nighteye) and Masaru also joins the group of friends.
    • Inko is also friends with Rei Todoroki and Keiryo Uraraka (Ochako's mother).
    • Ochako and the Todoroki children are Izuku and Katsuki's childhood friends.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Rei Todoroki is the Number Three Hero.
    • Like in the original version, Izuku has a Quirk that allows him to absorb and expel energy.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Enji Todoroki (Endeavor) is gruff, but also a good Happily Married husband and father who is also friends with Toshinori Yagi, to the point that he also joins the raid to capture All for One that led to All Might's injury.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Momo likes boys, but when practicing with Eiko for "Romeo and Juliet", she finds herself interested in kissing her.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Izuku will still get One for All.
    • Touya Todoroki disappeared without a trace.
    • The Sludge Villain attacks Izuku, is captured by All Might and escapes to attack Katsuki.
  • Original Character:
    • Shoko Todoroki, Shoto's twin.
  • Ship Tease: Ochako and Shoko are clearly interested in Izuku, who is interested in Ochako.
