Fanfic / What's in a Hoard?

Go To

Several Generations ago the Midoriya family gained a transformative dragon-based Quirk split into two groups, the heroic metallics, and the villainous chromatics. But what happens when Izuku is born as a chromatic dragon. Many would give up on being heroes, but Izuku defies his nature and chooses to be a hero anyway. The road ahead isn’t easy but with help from his friends, he just might be able to show the world that anyone can be a hero, regardless of circumstance.

This fic can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

The fic would be announced as dead after 64 chapters due to Titus621 retiring from writing.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Izuku and Momo are childhood friends, having attended the same formal functions when growing up.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Hisashi Midoriya, rather than an always absent father that can spit fire, is a Pro Hero (formerly in the top ten) that can transform into a huge dragon that shoots electricity.
    • Bakugou is noticeably stronger due to his rivalry with Izuku and being mentored by Stormclaw.
    • All-Might never received his Career-Ending Injury from All For One, allowing him to maintain his more muscular form 24/7.
    • Ochako's Quirk is changed from negating gravity to moving weight from one object to another. During the Entrance Exam, Ochako's the one to take out the Zero Pointer and is the top-scoring applicant. She defeats Mina during the Sports Festival by taking weight from the ground and putting it into the other girl, leaving her unable to move.
    • Shinso's Brainwash Quirk can affect people if they give any kind of direct response to him, as opposed to just verbally. He takes control of Izuku from something as simple as him nodding "yes".
  • Adaptational Job Change: Hisashi is a Pro-Hero in this story.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Several students use different hero names than canon.
    • Izuku takes the name Defiant rather than Deku.
    • Toru is Spectrum instead of Invisible Girl.
    • Mina goes by Queen rather than Pinky.
    • Aoyama chooses Soleil instead of Can't Stop Twinkling.
    • Todoroki uses Flashpoint instead of just going by Shoto.
    • Kyoka is changed to Heartjack rather than Earphone Jack.
    • Lastly, Bakugo goes by Ground Zero instead of Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Bakugou is a lot nicer to most people, because of Izuku having a strong quirk, and having a positive mentor in Stormclaw, leading to him not developing a superiority complex.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Several girls have ones for Izuku, which is helpful as said nicknames are the only thing that calms him down when his instincts get out of control.
    • Ochako uses her canon nickname of Deku.
    • Mina calls Izuku "Midori".
    • Momo uses her old childhood nickname for him of "Zuku".
    • Pony calls Izuku "Izzy".
    • Nejire calls Izuku "Greenhorn".
    • Eiko calls Izuku "Aniki".
    • Tsuyu uses "Izu-chan".
    • After the Hosu Arc, Kyoka starts calling Izuku "Emerald".
  • Age Lift: Hero schools are instead universities, making all the students three years older.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Stormclaw lost his arm protecting All Might from All for One, preventing All Might from losing his stomach and lung.
  • Ascended Extra: Pony Tsunatori gets put in 1-A in this story instead of 1-B.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Izuku’s quirk gives him naturally villainous instincts, but despite that, he still wants to be a hero, no matter how hard it is for him.
  • Battle Harem: Izuku's girlfriends qualify, given that they're all training to be heroes. Izuku's instincts drive him to make them stronger so that his "hoard" will be even more impressive.
  • Berserk Button: Pony does not take kindly to being called a "cow", due to years of bullying back in high school over her bust.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Nejire Hado is tiny, cheerful, and prone to skipping. She also beats the entirety of class 1A in under thirty seconds and most of that was spent fighting Izuku and Bakugou.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Death Arms advocates caution, citing that rushing headlong into danger is more likely to get a hero killed than anything. All-Might preaches doing your best to save everyone in every situation. After discussing it, Izuku, Ochako, and Jirou agree that both Death Arms cynicism and All-Might's idealism have their merits. Rushing in to save someone could potentially get themselves killed without helping anyone, but they should still try to save as many people as possible.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Hizashi is still a hero after losing his arm to All For One, but fell out of the top ten.
  • Covert Pervert: Proper Lady Momo admits she really wants to spank Mina after seeing the latter in a cheongsam and uses her power to make sex toys. A later scene shows that she very much enjoys being on top
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Averted. It takes several minutes of Momo performing CPR on Izuku to accomplish anything and she fractures one of his ribs doing so.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Izuku uses his dragon form to force Shoto to use his fire because he knows that Shoto will cripple half of his power if he does not use it.
  • D-Cup Distress: Pony used to be mocked for her large bust and took to wearing an expensive minimizer bra to hide it.
  • Dragon Hoard: Every dragon in Izuku’s family has their own personal hoard, with the specific items that make it up differing between person.
    • Hisashi hoards sunken ships.
    • Izuku’s is unique as in addition to his physical hoard of hero merchandise, he also hoards people.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Terrorflame, a red chromatic dragon relative of Izuku’s. He fought with All Might three times before finally being arrested during his fourth fight.
    • In a case of this being utterly Played for Laughs: Nejire, or at least for Bakugo and Midoriya. After her first meeting with Class 1-A, a relieved Kaminari states that maybe "Hell training" with her won't be so bad, something that makes both Bakugo and Midoriya laugh hysterically due to how naive the idea is. The next chapter both shows that Midoriya and Bakugo both take Nejire dead serious as an opponent, with Midoriya even stating "you are not ready for this" and "She is not a member of the Big Three because she's nice". She goes to prove their wary attitude 100% justified when she absolutely demolishes the whole class in 30 seconds in a way that's even more impressive than when Mirio did it in canon (remember, Mirio did not fight Bakugou or Todoroki in his friendly fight against Class 1-A) all while never losing her Badass Adorable persona.
  • Dungeon Bypass: Izuku easily gets first place in the Sports Festival obstacle course by simply flying over the entire thing. Hizashi lampshades that the course wasn't made with flyers in mind.
  • Extreme Libido: Anyone in Izuku’s family with a full dragon transformation Quirk has to masturbate frequently due to the Quirk giving them an overactive libido, but Izuku, both due to dating/cuddling with Ochako and Mina and because his Quirk wants him to have kids, has to do it near-daily (at least until his girlfriends start helping out).
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Averted. Of Izuku's first three lovers, only Genki Girl Mina can cook well. Ochako can make basic things while Proper Lady Momo can't even make rice.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Izuku gets extremely aroused when he realizes Momo beat him in a test.
  • Gender Flip: Eijirou Kirishima - or Eiko, rather - is a girl here, but is otherwise the same personality-wise.
  • Greed: All Midoriyas who transform into dragons have this hardwired into them, as it is a part of their natural instincts and they have to learn how to manage it. Or not to, as those who went villain can attest.
  • Heroic RRoD: Using a transformation they're not ready for has detrimental effects on a Midoriya's health, including potentially killing them if they push themselves too far.
  • Hidden Buxom: Pony appears to be fairly busty but when she takes off her specially made bra, it becomes apparent her breasts are bigger than her head.
  • Hidden Depths: Both Ochako and Momo are very dominant in bed, with Izuku noting that Ochako takes what she wants while Momo demands it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: All for One stole Terrorflame's quirk, causing his personality to change to the point where Kurogiri and Shigaraki both notice that something is off, he also starts to develop headaches and a desire for wealth.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Ochako still calls Izuku "Deku" even though he developed a powerful Quirk when he was four because Bakugo uses the name as a taunt whenever he challenges Izuku to a competition.
  • Important Haircut: Tsu gets her hair cut by Izuku to save her after it got caught while escaping a sinking ship.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Death Arms rips into Jirou for running off on her own to save Izuku. While she did save Izuku's life, she and the others acknowledge she might not always be so lucky and Death Arms has likely seen several heroes die doing exactly what she did.
  • Meaningful Name: Izuku's Hero Alias is Defiant, demonstrating his defiance toward his own more villainous instincts that come with his being a Chromatic Dragon.
  • Mundane Utility: Izuku takes advantage of his immunity to all forms of poison and disease to eat meat raw, something his dragon form finds quite appealing.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Pony's hero name here is Stampede.
  • Nature Versus Nurture: Heavily in favor of Nurture, as Izukus's own father knows that his son's instincts tend towards the villainous, so he ensures that his son has a firm moral compass and learns how to manage those instincts.
  • Oh, Crap!: Everyone's reactions to Terrorflame showing up at the USJ.
  • Partial Transformation: Izuku first learns how to transform himself by changing only partway, such as turning his arms draconic.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Nejire is shorter than almost everyone in class 1A but also powerful enough to defeat them all in under thirty seconds.
  • Point of Divergence: During All Might's first battle with All for One, Stormclaw took the attack that crippled All Might and lost his arm, but stopped All Might from being injured and as such means that he is still working at full capabilities.
  • Polyamory: As of the Hosu Arc, Izuku is in a relationship with Ochako, Momo, and Mina, (all of whom also get involved with the other girls) with Tsuyu stating she plans on joining once she's ready. Meanwhile, Nejire, Pony, and Kyoka are hinted at as potential future lovers as well.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Kyoka makes a note of defying this when saving Izuku from Stain, she sends both her location and a quick message that Stain's attacking Izuku to the study group she's a part of.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Momo's Quirk allows her to make anything as long as she knows its composition.
  • Precision F-Strike: When Izuku finds out how busty Pony is, she remarks that he didn't know she had "big huge fucking tits".
  • Related in the Adaptation: Ryukyu is Izuku's cousin on his father's side.
  • Required Secondary Powers:
    • Izuku's entire family has some resistance to the Breath Weapon of other dragons and complete immunity to their own. Since Izuku's Breath Weapon is poison, he's immune to all known drugs and medicines because his body treats them as poison. Fortunately, his blood is also poison so Izuku's also immune to disease as foreign microbes simply can't survive in his bloodstream.
    • Momo's body is much denser than a normal person's due to her needing all the extra weight to convert into other objects.
  • Scaled Up: Every Midoriya has the ability to turn into a dragon.
  • Screw Destiny: Izuku's dragon transformation is that of a Chromatic Dragon, meaning that his instincts are more villainous and all other Chromatic Dragons in his family before him inevitably became villains.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: Izuku's family on his father's side can turn into dragons. Izuku notes that most clothing can't survive a basic transformation, let alone someone turning into a twenty-meter dragon with three extra appendages, so their hero costumes are made from their own scales. Though the process is time-consuming and expensive (not to mention painful), as such Izuku's initial costume is only a pair of pants.
  • Shout-Out: The various dragon colors, breath weapons, and alignments are all taken from Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Side Bet: Izuku and Katsuki had a bet as to who would score higher on the entrance exam, the loser having to recite poetry to the loser at a time and place decided by the winner. Izuku loses but recites the poem in English (which Katsuki doesn't speak), giving him the last laugh.
  • Statuesque Stunner:
    • Ochako is a couple of inches above Izuku's six feet and attractive enough to render him speechless when they first meet.
    • Momo is slightly taller than Ochako and similarly beautiful.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Izuku attempts this a few times, with varying levels of success.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Aside from Shoto’s canonical love of soba, Mina is revealed to love okra. When Izuku makes soba with okra, Mina and Shoto have a staredown over who gets the last helping.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Izuku’s first hero costume, due to the expense and time involved in making it, consists of only a pair of pants.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Discussed after the fact. Death Arms royally chews out Kyoka offscreen for going off on her own to help Izuku against Stain. It is acknowledged by both Izuku and Uraraka that the Pro Hero had a point as he had probably seen too many young Heroes die because they went off on their own and got in over their heads.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Izuku and, later, Miruko have to reassure Ochako after the fight with Stain due to her being taken out of the fight quickly. Izuku points out that her entrance provided enough of a distraction to buy time for him and Jirou to recover. Miruko points out that she is still a student at U.A. and has only been a student there for less than a semester. Miruko also pointed out that, while she is well known to work alone, she didn't get to where she currently is without the help of others and she still routinely trains with other Pros.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Terrorflame has a well deserved and feared reputation, but after the failure of the USJ attack, All for One steals his Quirk and kills him.
