Campione of the Raging Tides is a Campione! fanfiction by SeerKing. It stars Jean Campbell as she slays Poseidon to become a Campione and her further adventures in preparation for a mysterious enemy that wipes out all the world's Campione every 1000 years...

Campione rise and fall, but none are ever older than a thousand years old, because every thousand years, they are mysteriously wiped out. As the end of this current millennia draws to a close, watch through the eyes of the newly risen Eighth Campione as she rises into power and stands against those who seek to end her.

Campione of the Raging Tides provides examples of:

  • Berserk Button: For Jean, it's people trying to force her to do things and hurting the people she cares about, like Rebecca.
  • Black Magic: Sorcery. It can be used by even those without magical ability via a ritual that converts the life force of other people and creatures into raw magical power, often killing and sickening anything around them, and just using it slowly erodes away at the user's sanity, morality, and health, firmly marking it as evil magic. Every Mage Association in existence has a standing order to eliminate any sorcerer that they can find, and even Heretic Gods will attempt to slay any they encounter if they have the chance.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Most Campione don't bother to really learn any mortal magic, because of the fact that their Authorities are more powerful in combat (with their main opponents having Anti-Magic anyways) and how they have magic groups for their day-to-day needs. Jean points out that the second reason is just stupid, and that using combat Authorities on mortals and similar foes is serious overkill.
  • Bullying a Dragon: One mage group kidnaps Rebecca to get to Jean. She responds by cursing them.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When confronted on her crimes and asked how many people she's killed for her sorcery, Eleanor compares it to remembering how many slices of bread one has eaten during their lifetime, she cares for them so little.
  • Composite Character: As usual in Campione. For example, Davy Jones was both Jonah and Saint David (the patron saint of Wales), both of whom are cited as inspirations behind the original Davy Jones legend to begin with.
    • This is also done deliberately with Freya, as her summoners used a Gromoire of Odin to grant her Odin's Authority over runic magic, which is depicted as an insane course of action that could lead to Odin coming to seek out his stolen Authority.
  • Curse: One of the Authorities that Jean receives from Davy Jones is the ability to curse people who have wronged her somehow, said curses worsening while over water.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Luo Hao doesn't seem to like sexism or homophobia, and tells Yue, a lesbian member of her group, that she can join Jean's organization, saying that she may be a tyrant, but she won't keep someone so clearly unhappy in her employ if they don't want to be.
  • Evil Uncle: Gender-flipped version, Rebecca's Aunt Eleanor plans on using her as a pawn, tries to have her kidnapped, and is a sorcerer, a practitioner of dark and forbidden magics.
  • Fantastic Racism: Eleanor Piper looks down on anyone who isn't English, especially those from the other countries of the UK like Scotland.
  • Fiery Redhead: Averted with Jean... unless someone bashes her Berserk Button hard.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: Jean is swallowed whole by a Divine Beast snake Athena had brought, but her Campione abilities keep her alive long enough to escape without harm.
  • Graceful Loser: Athena ruefully admits she did provoke Jean, while the Eight King tried to avoid battle and only fought when cornered.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: Upon awakening nude in a warning vision from Pandora to not interfere if Jean and Godou fight, Yuri promptly covers herself with her hands.
  • Happily Adopted: Jean is the only Campione to refer to Pandora as her mother, which has some benefits, like better remembering her time in the Netherworld.
  • Heroic Willpower: Jean is able to resist Azazel's seduction abilities through sheer will and a hatred of being told what to do.
  • Hollywood Autism: Jean admits to having Asperger's syndrome, a real-life mild form of autism characterized by significant difficulty in communicating or interacting with others.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: A Discussed Trope, as one of Jean's main tasks given to her by Pandora is breaking Godou out of this, as he is considered instrumental in holding off The King of the End.
  • Immortality Immorality: Eleanor has been using a Grimoire to extend her life by stealing the bodies of younger girls.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Rebecca is straight. Subverted, as it turns out she's just deep in the closet and believes that being a Hearth Priestess requires Virgin Power.
  • Irony: Jean ends up fighting Joan of Ark, her likely namesake.
  • It Only Works Once: Freya can seemingly only use each Norse rune once, with Jean guessing that using a rune again would further draw Odin's attention to his stolen Authority.
  • I Will Find You: Right before dying, Athena begs Godou to locate her reincarnation and protect her, since she's going to become a Divine Ancestor and as such be hunted for her powers. Godou doesn't waste time and orders the Historical Committee to help him to do so.
  • Loophole Abuse: Hestia can temporarily descend to Earth without going Heretical, because she's dealing with an issue regarding her High Priestess, not rebelling against her legend.
  • Making a Splash: One of the powers that Jean inherited from slaying Poseidon.
  • Named Weapon: Invoked by the Authority Jean got from Azazel, she has to give each weapon she makes a name for it to work properly.
  • No Social Skills: Jean has trouble reading facial expressions, forcing her to analyze them and refer to them later. See Hollywood Autism above.
  • Only Sane Woman: Jean is one of the more rational Campione, especially when compared to a certain sword-wielding one. Just don't push her Berserk Buttons.
  • Photographic Memory: Jean has an eidetic memory.
  • Sacred Hospitality: Mentally Lampshaded by Jean when Hestia and Athena are fighting, noting that it feels wrong to have Hestia fight against Athena when it was Jean's home that was threatened.
  • Sadly Mythtaken: In-Universe: Rebecca believed that Virgin Power was required for her role as Hestia's High Priestess because that's the case for Vesta (Hestia's Roman version), and she felt that it was best to act as if she was in the service of both goddesses. When Yue, who's from China, knew the truth of things when she didn't...
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: Jean's former schoolmate "Big Eck", a sexist and misogynistic pig who's also a thug that's been involved in some minor assaults and drugs.
  • Situational Sword: Some of Jean's Authorities have specific requirements for activation. For example, she can only Curse someone who has wronged her.
  • Sneeze Cut: Happens frequently with Godou.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: Azazel's seduction abilities work regardless of sexual preference.
  • Worthy Opponent: Poseidon seems to view Jean as this when she defeats him.
    • Later, Athena comes to respect her as well, even loaning her the Gorgoneion Grimoire so she can have defensive Authorities.
  • Xanatos Gambit: This is the situation with Guinevere's manipulation of the fight between Jean and Freya, as well as the false Heretic God she summons to join it. If Jean falls to Freya, she can claim Athena's Authority. If Jean wins and is weakened, she'll be open to Lancelot finishing her off. And if she somehow manages to win and retain her strength, Guinevere can use Freya to strengthen the Grail.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Jean is flabbergasted by the fact that Athena is attracted to Godou despite knowing his, not entirely inaccurate, reputation as The Casanova.
