A Shadow of the Titans is a Crossover between Jackie Chan Adventures and Teen Titans (2003) by Eduard Kassel and a part of Project Dark Jade.

Following an offscreen battle with a demon, Jade is accidentally banished along with it, ending up in some sort of pocket dimension. While there, she is confronted by a mysterious being (whom Word of God names "The Cackler"), who offers up a cryptic monologue before forcibly transforming Jade into her Shadowkhan form. He then tosses her into another universe — specifically, the universe of Teen Titans, where a series of events soon sees Jade forcibly drafted into the HIVE. Now, under the identity of Zhu Chan, Jade must play the role of supervillain while searching for a way to return home, and also dealing with the Titans, who — due to unfortunate circumstances - end up viewing her as just another criminal to be defeated.

This story contains examples of:

• Academy of Evil: The HIVE. Jade is actually surprised at how much like a regular school it is.
• Achilles' Power Cord: In the Interlude chapter, Evil Dick's unstoppable doomsday weapon is defeated when Star Chan pulls its power cord. The Titans are seriously unimpressed.
• Affably Evil: Gadjo is psychotic, but when he's not trying to kill you, he seems like a pretty fun guy.
• Affectionate Nickname: Jinx calls Jade "Blue". Gadjo calls her "Little Shadow".
• Alternate Self: The Uncle Chow whose antiques shop in Jump City's Chinatown that Raven visits to collect the last remnant of Jade's missing chi seems to be the local version of Uncle.
• Alternate Universe:
  • The Titans universe is this to the JCA universe. The point is hammered home when Jade realizes the Jump City is the counterpart to San Francisco, with Titans Tower revealed to be where Alcatraz is supposed to be, and the calender is five years ahead.
  • Another major difference is that in the TT universe, chi magic died out a couple centuries prior to the modern day.
• Ambition Is Evil: Jinx is defined by her desire to gain wealth and respect as a villain.
• Amplifier Artifact: The Talisman of Hwan the Bright enhances the magic of its users. Jinx's use of it boosts her bad luck powers to the point of bending Murphy's Law itself to her own ends.
• Another Dimension:
  • The pocket dimension Jade ends up in in the prologue — it consists solely of a small island floating in a multicolored void.
  • We finally get a glimpse of the shadow realm when Jade flees there after getting hit with an onion. It appears to consist of islands, covered in mountains and jungles, floating in shadows that seem to shift between air and liquid composition. And it appears to be toxic to non-Shadowkhan, whom the shadows burn (while at the same time granting Shadowkhan increased power and a Healing Factor).
    • It's explained later that this is just one branch of the Shadow Realm, which exists across the multiverse, with some branches being like this, and others being like what was shown in canon.
• Anti-Villain: Jade is a definite Type IV. She'd very much like to not be a villain at all, but circumstances forced her into the role, and have been keeping her in it.
• Arch-Enemy:
  • After he nails her with an onion, Jade declares Beast Boy is now her archenemy. He's thrilled at the concept, figuring it makes him cooler.
  • Jade declares Starfire to be her new archnemesis after the heroine tried to leave her brainwashed.
• Asskicking Leads to Leadership: After the Oni curbstomp Blood and his faculty, the rest of the HIVE quickly surrender and bend the knee to them.
• Ax-Crazy:
  • Gadjo, all the way.
  • Mumbo is compared by Robin to The Joker as an unpredictable force of Chaotic Evil.
  • The adult Jade who appears in the "Destiny" interlude has shades of this, especially if you've read the oneshot she originally showed up in.
  • Machete, who's so crazy Gadjo is the only one she could safely be partnered up with.
• Badass Boast:
  • Jade, when saying she'll make her way home before the Queen overtakes her mind.
  Jade: It won't be easy, but I'm Jade Chan. I do the impossible and make it look easy!
  • Jade again, in her mental narration while undergoing her Emergency Transformation:
  He was dangerous, but as the other wing formed around her arm and she rose higher into the air along with her hair pointing to the ceiling, she was not afraid. She was the shadows. She was power that transcended light and darkness, belonging to both and also to itself. The dawn was breaking; she could feel the sun break the darkness, letting shadows reign. He was a man with a knife, and she was ascendant.
  And he had wronged her. He would pay.
• Badass Normal: Jade acknowledges Penguin as one, noting that a person whose only superpower is "being a crime boss" doesn't reach the upper tier of villains in a place like Gotham, and then get away with shifting to a legal grey zone, without being formidable.
• Bad Guy Bar:
  • The HIVE has one. Apparently villains don't care much about age limits.
  • The Iceberg Lounge naturally. Specifically, the Black Velvet section, which is specifically set aside for Gotham's criminals (and the civilians willing to pay good money to be in the same room as them)
• Bad Powers, Good People: Despite becoming a Shadowkhan once again and gaining powers over darkness, Jade is firmly an Anti-Villain (Type IV), and would like to become a hero.
• Balance Between Good and Evil: This is the basic tenant of chi magic, as Jade explains to Jinx while trying to talk her out of using the Talisman of Hwan.
• Bald of Evil:
  • Gizmo, as per usual, is completely bald.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: Jade thinks this whole situation is the universe saying this to her in regards to her wish for an exciting life.
• Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Seems to be what the Joker is aiming for when he carves up Jade's face, having deduced she's not a true villain.
• Big Bad Ensemble: Brother Blood and Tarakudo are both trying to corrupt and manipulate Jade, for their own agendas. Tarakudo beats Blood in the end.
• Big Damn Heroes: Just when it looks like the Oni are going to defeat the Titans/HIVE alliance, Batman, Green Arrow, Huntress, and the Question arrive as backup.
• Big Eater:
  • Jade, although it gets taken to Extreme Omnivore levels.
  • Jinx becomes this when the Talisman of Hwan boosts her power, but she actually gets skinner over time.
• Black-and-White Morality: Robin's viewpoint, as Raven lampshades during the tournament. Subverted with Raven herself, as she understands that there are villains with standards out there, and not all villains are all bad (like Jade), and that you generalize like Robin does at your own risk.
• Blood Knight:
  • Gadjo enjoys nothing more than a good fight. Except pie.
  • Machete is also extremely violent (fittingly, she's assigned to be Gadjo's partner), to the point she'll attack her fellow HIVE students if they get in the way of her attacking someone else.
• Brainwashing for the Greater Good: When Jade's missing chi has all been gathered by Raven, Beast Boy and Starfire argue for keeping her as "Star Chan", the latter because she viewed her as a little sister figure.
• The Brute: Mammoth and Gadjo. Also Susano, to an extent. And while we haven't seen much of Machete, from what little we have seen, she appears to be a rare female example.
• Bullying a Dragon:
  • The hot dog guy Jade met was really rude to her over five cents, leading to her accidentally blowing up his cart with the Dragon talisman, not to mention the random residents of the city.
  • Kitten, after having been stopped nearly effortlessly by Jade in the Tournament of Villainesses (Jade used heat vision to blast away Kitten's energy whip and then picked her up with the Rooster Talisman), proceeds to insult her! The evil teen insulted Jade's outfit and appearance (the appearance part in multiple ways), her power set, and was starting to say that Jade was so ugly that that was why she wan't in her original dimension, they had kicked her out (she didn't finish, but it's clear what she was saying), before Jade's Berserk Buttons were fully pressed and she unleashed a Dragon Talisman blast that nearly killed Kitten, giving Jade a My God, What Have I Done? moment (as, unlike the others Jade had met, the evil blonde was not Made of Iron). And this was AFTER Jade had offered Kitten a chance to surrender!
• Can't Hold Her Liquor:
  • When the aged-up Jade is convinced to deal with her frustrations via alcohol, she ends up so drunk from just a few sips of Belgian Ale that she's left half-conscious and wailing on a karaoke machine.
  • According to the Oni Generals, this only affects Oni that haven't developed at least a second set of horns.
• Cardboard Prison:
  • Cyborg feels the Jump City Prison needs more funding.
  • Averted for Arkham Asylum, which is somewhere between The Alcatraz and Tailor-Made Prison depending on the inmate in question.
• The Chew Toy: Minor HIVE student Evil Dick seems to exist only to get his ass kicked. In his first appearance, he ticks off Gadjo, who puts him in a full body cast. In his second, he's easily removed from the Titans rematch with Super Jinx by Cyborg, who doesn't even remember his name. His third appearance is basically an afterthought to the scene he's in, and you can guess how it works out for him. And while his fourth appearance is a Not-So-Harmless Villain moment, he's still presented as utterly incompetent.
• Clingy MacGuffin:
  • Jade had the Rooster, Dragon, and Pig talismans on her when she was sent across dimensions, and after the Cackler's interference, they end up fused into her body. Until she ends up Taking the Bullet for Jinx, and Raven's spell violently expels them from her body. Afterwards, she sinks the Rooster deeper into her body so it can't be separated again, and following her Emergency Transformation it merges completely with her.
  • Machete's suit is apparently another example, as Robin mentions that they cannot remove it.
  • The Queen has the fragments of the Mask of Tarakudo embedded beneath her facial skin after breaking it to free the Oni. After a chi transfer from Starfire, they're separated from her body.
• Clothing Damage: It's become a Running Gag for Jade to suffer this:
  • During her first fight with the Titans, Robin hits the Dragon, which causes an explosive release of energy that — among other things — fries most of her clothes. This leads Jade to make sure her new costume is fire retardant and otherwise durable, to avoid any repeats of such an event.
  • After Taking the Bullet for Jinx with Raven's separation spell, the expulsion of the talismans and her chi shreds her clothes.
  • The chi transfer from Starfire to remove Tarakudo's influence from her likewise shreds her Kagehime outfit.
  • Her Emergency Transformation causes her to break out through what she's wearing.
  • Her fight with the mutated Kitten ends up completely destroying her clothes in the process.
• Cluster F-Bomb: Jade's reaction to finding out that she's being loaned out to the Joker, after a momentary Heroic BSoD, is to burst out in what's described as "an unholy mix of Cantonese, Japanese, and English profanity".
• Combat Sadomasochist/Too Kinky to Torture: Gadjo. He gets electrocuted by Susano during the entrance exam fight, and laughs through it, and when he's later thrown into the Pit for a week, Mammoth comments that the only reason he probably doesn't break out early is because whatever goes on in there, he probably enjoys it.
• Combo Platter Powers: In addition to the shadow powers that come with being a Shadowkhan, Jade also has the Dragon, Pig and Rooster talismans at her disposal 24/7.
• Continuity Nod:
  • When Jade realizes she's been accidentally banished in the process of banishing a demon, she's upset that it's happened again, a reference to the time she was banished to the Netherworld along with Bai Tza.
  • When she first tells Jinx she knows magic, she mentioned the chi zapper she made from a flower to battle the Earth Demon.
  • When she sets up her magic lab, she has some basic supplies and a "needlessly creepy paperweight" that she says reminds her of Tarakudo.
  • She's also not happy when she gets turned into a monkey by Mumbo, remembering the last time it happened (the original Monkey talisman episode).
  • At another point, she lists all the spells she's learned and used over the course of the show.
  • Jade also mentally compares and contrasts the shadow realm of the TT world and the Demon Netherworld.
  • The Queen compares herself to Tiger when trying to convince Jade she's not so bad.
  • During the chapter that introduces the Master of Games, Jade briefly compares him to the Monkey King.
  • When trying to convince Jinx to remove her amulet, Jade mentions the time Daolon Wong ended up rendering himself blind, deaf and mute.
  • The next chapter has a number of references to the Oni's original attempt at covering Jade's world in shadow.
  • When Jade's body absorbs the Rooster talisman as part of her Emergency Transformation, she compares it to what Shendu did with all of them.
• Cool Mask: In Gotham, Jade starts wearing a plague doctor mask as part of her new "Karasu" identity.
• The Coup: How Blood took over the HIVE. And now Dr. Gunn and several others are planning to return the favor.
• Crossover:
  • Obviously. But in addition to crossing over JCA and TT, it also partially crosses over with another story by the same author — the evil adult Jade who appears in the "Destiny" interlude is (or is based on) the Cult-leading adult version of Jade who appeared in the oneshot "When I Grow Up".
  • With Jewel of Darkness, as the Susano seen in both fics is the same person, with those events being part of the Missing Episode.
• Crossover Cameo:
  • Zatanna shows up in the Tournament of Villainesses chapter when Robin asks for her help in finding Raven.
  • Georgia, the daughter of Shazam!'s Arch-Enemy, is another contestant of that same event.
  • Green Lantern Jon Stewart (of Justice League fame) shows up to deal with Jade after she ages herself up and is considered too dangerous for the Titans.
  • Slade gets two in the Super Jinx chapter.
• Cryptic Conversation:
  • As noted in the summary, the Cackler monologues one of these to himself when confronting Jade in the prologue.
  • Also most of the "Destiny" interlude, as we have no real idea what's going on there.
• Cthulhumanoid:
  • An off-hand remark in the prologue implies that the Chan Clan fought one right before Jade was banished.
  • One briefly cameos in a video as one of Gadjo's previous employers. He apparently tried to summon an Eldritch Abomination (presumably the big C himself), but was killed by Gadjo when the latter realized this would mean no more pies.
• Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • Jade vs Kitty and Raven vs Georgia in the Tournament of Villainesses.
  • Gadjo versus anyone unlucky enough to piss him off.
  • After Jade ages herself up, her powers grow so strong that the Titans don't stand a chance against her. Then Jon Stewart shows up, and she ends up on the receiving end.
  • Tarakudo easily kicks Blood out of Jade's mind.
  • Jinx, empowered by the Talisman of Hwan, is able to handle the Titans singlehandedly. In their rematch, however, they find ways to get around her power.
  • The Oni and Shadowkhan easily beat Blood and most of the HIVE.
• Curse Cut Short: Georgia, right before Raven slams her into a wall.
• Cutting the Knot:
  • During one Physical Feats class, Jade is presented with the task of traversing a Death Trap-ridden obstacle course and ringing a bell. Upon noticing that the course is circular, she just turns around and rings the bell that's a few feet behind her. The school considers it valid, but she gets detention anyway.
  HIVE student: Can she do that?
  • When sent out to steal the Jadeite Panda, Gadjo gets into a conversation on romance with the Titans outside the museum, so a fed-up Jade just goes in and takes it.
  • She stops Evil Dick's machine by pulling the plug as Star Chan. It's even name-dropped.
  • Defied. The Queen suggested killing the Joker to get out of their internship to him, but she vetoed it, pointing out that with his Joker Immunity, he'd probably survive and seek revenge. Though dead-tired from the road trip with the Joker from Jump to Gotham, and thus unable to come up with specifics, Jade comes up with the idea of getting him caught by Batman in a way that doesn't directly implicate her.
  • When forced to bust Harley out of Arkham, she decides that she needs to cause a distraction by causing a jailbreak. When trying to figure out which Rogues Gallery member would be the least dangerous, she realizes that she can just release the regular inmates.
• Dark Is Not Evil/Light Is Not Good:
  • Jade's villain persona, in black and blue, is contrasted with Brother Blood, who wears gold and white.
  • The two adult Jades who appear in the Mind Screwy "Destiny" interlude are a similar contrast. The good (or at least, non-psychotic) Jade is in all black, while the outright villainous Jade wears white.
  • When Jade regresses into herself in the Master of Games' medallion and meets the Queen, the Queen invokes this in order to convince Jade to merge with her (even bringing up Jackie's dark half released by the Tiger talisman as a comparison).
  • Raven is recruited for the Tournament of Villainesses, and constantly complains about it.
  • The Queen lampshades the former in Gotham when trying to convince Jade to take the next step in power, merger or no merger.
• Dating Catwoman: Gizmo and Mammoth mock Jade after she declares Beast Boy her Arch-Enemy by bringing up how often this trope occurs. Jinx assures her that it's a myth.
  Mammoth: You know what they say. First comes aggression, then hatred. Then comes wary respect for skills. Followed by surprising common ground on an issue. Then more hatred and aggression. Then a reboot of mutual respect with one side throwing away a win. Then a romantic rendezvous, and one comes back to the city years later, and a literal custody battle ensues over a wide-eyed bastard.
  Gizmo: Would your love child be bluish green, or greenish blue?
  *KABOOM!!*
• Deal with the Devil: The Queen makes one with Tarakudo to restore herself after Jade Taking the Bullet for Jinx reduces them to a shell of themselves.
• Defiant to the End: Even when the Queen claims that they will be destroyed if they don’t, Jade still refuses to merge with her, forcing the Queen to do something that apparently ends up splitting them.
• Destination Defenestration: Jade tosses Scarecrow out of a third story window after learning he's kidnapped and tortured her neighbors. He's reported to be fine afterwards; Penguin figures his suit offered protection.
• Do Not Adjust Your Set: Joker does this to broadcast that he's going to be busting Harley (or rather, Jade is on his orders, but he doesn't mention that), much to Jade's shock.
• The Dreaded:
  • Gadjo has quickly earned this reputation among the other HIVE students — they're all scared stiff of him.
  • Machete is right behind him.
  • Joker for much of the villain community, with good reasons.
• Dream Walker: Jade learns the spell for doing this via astral projection and uses it to enter the dreams of her teammates, Gadjo, and Brother Blood. She then tries to see what happens if she enters her own unconscious body, and ends up in her subconscious, where she finds Tarakudo messing with her mind. Fortunately for him, she thinks it's just another dream.
• Dropped a Bridge on Him: Captain Hollywood is killed offscreen, and no one much cares afterwards.
• Either/Or Title: Most of the chapters have these, with the second title being more humorous and descriptive.
• Elaborate Underground Base: The HIVE. Jade compares it to Section 13, stating that it has a better aesthetic appeal.
• Eldritch Abomination: The "Great Old Shadows" dwelling in the depths of the Shadow Realm are implied to be this.
• Eldritch Location:
  • First, there was that pocket dimension with the twisting, multicolored sky (which caused a Brown Note reaction in Jade, making her nauseous).
  • Then there's the Shadow Realm of the TT world, with floating islands, some covered in forests and mountains, filled with twisting shadows that seem to switch between a liquid-like and an air-like state.
  • The Buried Brick Homes and Gardens are a sunken apartment complex below Gotham that, due to a failed ritual attempt to summon an eldritch horror, were sunk trans-dimensionally and only quite exist if you approach them from certain directions.
• Emergency Transformation:
  • Killer Moth has to put Kitten through one when she's badly injured in the Tournament of Villainesses. The result is a bug person like himself, but she appears to have suffered mentally from it, blaming Jade for her state and going on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
  • When Joker tortures Jade by giving her a Glasgow Grin, in her pain-induced delirium she reaches out to the shadows, which infuse her with power and evolve her into a Higher Shadowkhan, turning her into some kind of bird-like creature.
• Enemy Civil War: At the beginning of the story, the HIVE is recovering from one, wherein Blood overthrew the previous Headmistress and ended up having to wipe out the Russian branch of the HIVE.
• Enemy Mine:
  • Jinx briefly teams up with the Titans after Mumbo captures both Jade and Starfire and forces them to be his "assistants". Jinx describes it as "sharing a mutual problem", and as soon as Mumbo is defeated she grabs Jade and runs off.
  • The possible Bad Future glimpsed in the "Destiny" interlude has another apparent example: whatever "Omega" is, it's so bad that the Demon Sorcerers and the Eight Immortals (or a version of them, anyway) team up with each other and Good!Jade to stop Evil!Jade from releasing it.
  • Jade and Raven teaming up against the Master of Games.
  • The HIVE honor roll, and Gadjo, team up with the Titans to defeat the Oni invasion.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Killer Moth dearly loves his daughter, and is distraught when Jade nearly kills her (accidentally) in the Tournament and he swears revenge.
  • After she freaks out from her transformation and escapes, he even tries going to Batman for help, and is willing to give up all his assets to Jade if it means that Kitten will get help.
• Even Evil Has Standards:
  • From Raven's perspective, Zhu Chan is this, as she never actively causes trouble, seeks peaceful alternatives, and doesn't take advantage of Raven being unconscious to hurt her, saying it wouldn't be right.
  • For a straighter example, when Jade and Blackfire face each other in the tournament, Blackfire is willing to let Jade surrender, as she doesn't want to fight a child. Though when Jade doesn't give up, it doesn't stop her from trying to pummel her.
  • Also, even the other HIVE villains find the Ax-Crazy Gadjo a bit disturbing.
  • Even Gadjo has standards, believe it or not, as he thinks fighting is about fighting, not big speeches or special effects, like Susano was doing in the HIVE entrance exam.
  • Even the HIVE is disgusted by Beast Boy and Starfire considering leaving Jade as "Star Chan" permanently.
  • When Blood punishes Jade by having The Joker, one of the most Ax-Crazy villains in the world, take a role as an Evil Mentor for her, one of the other students says that Blood should have just burned her death like a "civilized" villain instead.
  • Dr. Gunn of the HIVE doesn't like mind control, and he and several other HIVE staff members don't like how petty and egotistical Blood is, which is part of why they plan to overthrow him.
  • Two Face is disgusted by Penguin's straddling of the legal line, feeling that someone should be either law-abiding or a criminal, not live in a grey zone.
  • Penguin holds the breaking of contracts to be unforgivable. When Jade, whom he loaned out to Scarecrow, turns on Scarecrow to protect her neighbors, he cuts her loose and stops acting as her middleman.Later, when Kitten comes to him looking for information on Jade's whereabouts, he exploits a loophole by sending her the way of someone else rather than betray Jade directly, because Kitten paying in gold and not even haggling means that he can't short-change her. He also sympathizes with her post-transformation issues, given his feelings towards his own looks, and has one of his employees dance with her.
• Evil Costume Switch:
  • Naturally, Jade is forced to take on a new outfit when she's recruited by the HIVE (and after the above mentioned Clothing Damage, it becomes necessary). She ends up with a mildly complex ensemble composed of a cloak over a robe over a karate gi, selling the fact that she's a magic user who can also fight hand-to-hand.
  • When the Queen takes control of her and Jade's body, thanks to her deal with Tarakudo, she starts wearing kimono and a straw hat.
• Eviler than Thou:
  • Blood finds that he is outclassed by Tarakudo when he tries to take Jade’s mind. And earlier in the same chapter, Slade subtly shows that Blood is his inferior as well.
  • Blood gets it again in the next chapter, when the Oni and the Shadowkhan defeat him and his army of students. Jinx uses this as justification for the Titans allying with the remaining HIVE students against the Oni.
  • The Honor Roll all agree that Slade is the most intimidating person they've even met, even including witnessing Tarakudo's takeover.
• Evil Laugh: The HIVE actually has a seminar on this, and whether or not it's worth it. Captain Hollywood did this in class once, leading Jade to swear never to do it.
• Evil Makeover: Another thing the HIVE has a seminar on.
• Evil Plan: The Oni plan to draw the planet into the Shadow Realm, putting them firmly at the top of the food chain.
• Evil vs. Evil: The HIVE vs the Oni. The HIVE loses, badly.
• Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Evil Dick's evil machine is actually labeled "evil machine".
• Extreme Omnivore: It seems that as a Shadowkhan, Jade is capable of eating just about anything, in addition to her natural Big Eater tendencies having been increased. In fact, it becomes the subject of a Running Gag via Jinx repeatedly asking if she's part goat or something. Everything except alcohol, that is. Apparently, Jade, like most Japanese demons, can't hold her drink. According to Tarakudo, these feeding habits are a staple of female Shadowkhan.
• Eye Scream: Jinx loses an eye to Kitten, and her mystic biology keeps the HIVE's medics from regenerating it.
• Face Palm: Raven does this after hearing Gadjo's "explanation" for how relationships work.
• Failed a Spot Check: Evil Dick completely missed Robin freeing Starfire, and had no idea that Zhu/Star Chan had joined with the Titans despite it being two months since she had.
• Failsafe Failure: Jade busts Harley out of Arkham for the Joker by using her shadow-walking and telekinesis to take advantage of an emergency failsafe that lets the comparatively less dangerous inmates, who don't warrant a place in Batman's Rogues Gallery, out of their cells during a fire or similar emergency, using it as a distraction for Batman.
• Fantastic Arousal: Both Gadjo and Tarakudo are apparently turned on by the horns Jade sports after she's magically aged up. When Jade ages herself up, Jinx mentions everyone is staring at those things she grew (her breasts) and Jade mistakes Jinx as meaning her horns. Jinx wonders if horns are the "attraction thing" for Jade's kind when she preens when Gadjo compliments them but instantly blasts him through a wall for asking to touch them.
• Fantastic Racism:
  • Much like another story by the same author, there's a lot of subtle (and not so subtle) hate directed towards Metas and other non-humans. This ends up contributing to Jade being pushed towards the HIVE.
  • Played for laughs when Jade accuses Beast Boy of doing racial profiling after he comments that she and Mumbo have a lot in common (them both being blue-skinned magic users).
  • Susano appears to hate Jade based solely on him being partially divine and her being part Oni.^note Given his reaction to what is implied to be a version of Jade in the One Piece world, it's likely that he has other reasons to hate her
  • Susano also called Gadjo "Gaijin", a word meaning "alien", with great contempt, showing that his racism isn't just towards mystical beings (though since he seems to be in a team with a demon and a ghost, it may partly be because he's a Jerkass and just uses it as an excuse to demean others).
  • And Gadjo seems to really hate zombies.
  • Jade lampshades the inconsistency at one point, asking why blue skin was such a big deal while grey^note like Raven's skin was fine.
• Faux Affably Evil: Brother Blood, who — like in canon — pretends to be a charming old fellow, but really, really isn't.
• Filler Villain: The Master of Games in the Tournament chapter.
• Forced into Evil: Jade is only villain due to a bunch of misunderstandings with the Titans and fear of the HIVE.
• Forced Transformation:
  • The Cackler forcibly transforms Jade back into her Shadowkhan form (although she still has her normal mindset).
  • She also gets turned into a monkey by Mumbo (to serve as his assistant), but that is undone rather quickly.
• For Want Of A Nail: Per Word of God, this is the reason that Cyborg attempts his undercover mission at the HIVE from Season 3 despite it still being in the timeframe of Season 2 (going by Slade's cameos) — Jade's presence and actions have ramped up the HIVE's threat level enough for the Titans to do this. And Jade seeing through his disguise cuts it short before Cyborg catches Blood's attention, thus seemingly preventing the Season 3 Story Arc from ever happening.
• Girls with Moustaches: When Jade tries to use a potion to try and regrow her eyebrows after a failed spell fried them off, she gets one. When Jinx laughs, Jade throws the potion in her face, causing the bad luck witch to get one nearly reaching her shoulders.
• Glasgow Grin: The Joker's in this story, so this was bound to come up eventually. Unfortunately for Jade, it happens to her, when he wants to punish her for ratting him out to Batman.
• Good Is Not Dumb: Jade, as the Queen explicitly says that their cunning comes from her.
• Going to Give It More Energy: Raven does this to defeat Jade in the Tournament — she uses her shields to force Jade to overdose on shadows in the shadow realm, causing her to fall asleep.
• Gratuitous Japanese: Jade tends to slip into this when under duress. Presumably, this is due to the influence of her Shadowkhan side, seeing as she herself is Chinese.
• Greater-Scope Villain: The Cackler, possibly. It's not very clear at this point.
• Grievous Harm with a Body: When the Titans are watching footage of Gadjo fighting zombies, it mentioned at one point that he's apparently "whaling on zombies with a zombie".
• Groin Attack:
  • Jade suggests this to Starfire when they're pummeling Mumbo.
  • And she does it to the Master of Games later on.
• Guile Hero:
  • Jade, just like in canon, is intelligent and cunning. At one point, when Gadjo — who had no plan, only wanting to fight the Titans — is telling them about the way he thinks relationships work, she just goes and steals the artifact they were after.
  • She manages to break Harley out of the Arkham with minimal planning, despite the fact that the guards were expecting trouble and on high alert.
• Half-Human Hybrid: Jinx tells Jade her bad luck powers are due to her being 1/4 fey.
• Hammerspace: Jade mentally lampshades this in regards to Suzano's staff, even using the word hammerspace.
• Hero with Bad Publicity: Due to her short temper during her interactions with the Titans and the random Jerkass civilians of Jump City, Jade ends up being labeled a public threat. And matters aren't helped any by her having to pretend to be a villain so that the HIVE doesn't kill her.
• High-Altitude Battle: When the mutated Kitten tracks down Jade in Gotham, it leads to a fight that results in the two of them fighting each other several hundred feet in the air, and ends with them being so caught up in grappling that they crash back to the ground.
• Humanoid Abomination: The Cackler.
• Hypocrite: Susano's Fantastic Racism towards Oni becomes this with the apparent reveal that his demonic teammate is apparently one (albeit a weaker one than the Oni Generals).
• I'm a Humanitarian:
  • Gadjo knowingly eats the pie Mother Mae Eye was sealed in.
  • After defeating Blood, the Oni decide to feast on his brain.
• In Medias Res: Chapter 12, which has this for a title, opens with Evil Dick somehow having captured Starfire and activating his device.
• Insane Troll Logic:
  • Gadjo's "explanation" for how romantic relationship "really" work, which basically boils down to women using sex to force men to take out the garbage so civilization doesn't collapse. When he gives this speech to the Titans, they are all left dumbfounded... except Beast Boy, to whom it somehow makes sense!
  • After Jade/Zhu Chan Taking the Bullet for Jinx sends both Robin and Raven into a Heroic BSoD, Cyborg sticks them in a crate to work through it, on the basis that since a negative times a negative is a positive, stuffing that much Angst into a small space will have a positive effect. Surprisingly, it works.
• Irony: Jade lampshades the irony of her being sent to steal the Jadeite Panda.
• Jerkass: The citizens of Jump and Susano.
• Joker Immunity: Lampshaded by Jade when the Queen suggests killing the Joker to get out of their internship to him, pointing out that people more skilled at killing have tried and failed, and he'd probably end up Not Quite Dead and come after them.
• Journey to the Center of the Mind: When Jade is absorbed by the Master of Games' medallion, she ends up inside her mind, where she meets the Queen (her Enemy Within), who tries to present herself as a necessary part of Jade's mind, and tries to convince her to let them fuse together.
• Karmic Death: Captain Hollywood tries to strangle a unicorn, only to end up impaled by its horn.
• Keystone Army: The Shadowkhan's keystone isn't Tarakudo, but the Queen/Kagehime, who has the fragments of the Red Mask in her. When they and Tarakudo's chi are expelled from her body, the Shadowkhan are re-sealed.

• Kryptonite Factor: Beast Boy and Jade argue (in the middle of a fight, mind you) whether or not Jade's Shadowkhan-induced weakness to onions qualifies.
• Lame Pun Reaction: At one point Jade makes a bet with Gizmo about what kind of pun the Titans will open the fight with. She guessed correctly.
• Laser-Guided Karma:
  • Jade thinks that gaining the Shadowkhan weakness to onions (and actually experiencing the pain it causes) is this to her for enjoying doing it to Tarakudo. Though she's quick to point out that unlike her, he had it coming.
  • Jade warns Jinx that, due to the Balance Between Good and Evil nature of chi magic, she’s setting herself up for a major karmic backlash if she continues to use her chi magic amulet the way she’s been doing (constantly, and for dark and self-centered purposes).
• Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
  • The HIVE has a seminar called F.W.A., which appears to mean "Fourth Wall Awareness". The instructor is completely nuts, and no one takes it seriously — it's just used as a form of hazing for the newer students.
  • Gadjo's speech to Jinx about how Jade isn't dead because she's the focus of the story, not him.
  • Jade tells Queen that trying to murder Joker would only end with their own death, like some guest episode villain that thinks they are safe until their diver turns out to be the main antagonist.
• Licking the Blade: Done by the Master of Games with Machete's blade during his fight with Raven.
• Loss of Identity:
  • Jade fears that she's becoming less and less like her old self. This only gets worse when she speaks with the Queen, who points out how comfortable she's become with some of the changes she's undergone.
  • When the Queen is sent to the Shadow Realm, she's reduced to a feral thing until Tarakudo finds her and restores her. Even then, Jade's mind is still gone.
• Machete Mayhem: The aptly-named villain Machete (Gadjo's partner).
• Made of Iron:
  • After accidentally hitting Jinx and her team with a full energy attack during a fight with the Titans only for them to end up only slightly hurt, Jade comments that people in this world are pretty tough.
  • Subverted and lampshaded with Kitty. Jade gives her a full blast from the Dragon talisman and nearly kills her; afterwards, she comments how most people she'd encountered so far would have walked away from that.
• Mad Scientist:
  • Gizmo, obviously.
  • Also Georgia Sivanna, daughter of Shazam!'s Arch-Enemy.
• Magic Versus Science:
  • Gizmo and Jade seem to be quickly developing a rivalry based on this. The fact that they hate each other and are forced to share a lab space doesn't help.
  • Jinx and Raven both fight Georgia in the Tournament of Villainesses.
• Make It Look Like an Accident: Although Jade vetoes it, being Genre Savvy on the Joker's ability to cheat death, and not wanting him to come after her seeking revenge, the Queen suggests getting out of their internship with the Joker by killing him by using their telekinesis to get him hit by a train or something.
• Manipulative Bastard:
  • Blood's stock in trade.
  • In another similarity to Queen of All Oni, Tarakudo is manipulating Jade from the shadow realm via her subconscious.
  Tarakudo: I will make the bird want to sing.
• The Man Behind the Man: Turns out, Cadmus is the secret benefactor of the HIVE. Waller justifies this by saying it allows them to focus all these potential villains in one place where they can be monitored, and that this worked until Blood's coup.
• Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane:
  • Jade feels an odd quality to Gotham's shadows, and she's not sure if it's in her head or if there's something else messing with them. Considering that in most continuities the city was cursed by a warlock, she might be onto something.
  • Jade seems to feel Scarface's gaze when infiltrating Arkham... Later one of the guards thinks he heard the puppet complaining.
• Mind Control:
  • Blood, but it doesn't work very well on Jade at all.
  • Poison Ivy makes a few appearances, with Jade noting her liberal use of mind altering pheromones.
• Mind Screw: The interlude chapter "Destiny" features two adult versions of Jade — one evil and one good (apparently) — fighting each other. It borders on being a Bizarro Episode, except it's implied that it actually will be important later on.
• Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Tarakudo's refusal to aid a proper Split-Personality Merge, and constant dismissals of her, makes the Queen/Kagehime turn on him and help the heroes re-seal the Oni.
• Morality Chain: The Queen refers to Jackie and the rest of Jade's family as this by name when describing why Jade is Slowly Slipping Into Evil.
• Mundane Utility: Jade has used her eye beams to heat up a potion at least once.
• Mythology Gag:
  • Jinx says she would never fall for some jerky hero who's always getting in her way. In the show, she did end up in a relationship with Kid Flash after he spent his whole introductory episode getting in her way and messing with her.
  • More subtly, the Master of Games abducted Raven, a Dark Is Not Evil heroine, for his "Tournament of Villainesses", like how he summoned Gizmo, a villain, for his "Tournament of Heroes" in canon.
  • Susano is the same individual as the character of the same name from the author's other Titans fic, Jewel of Darkness.
  • Also like in Jewel of Darkness, Jinx loses an eye and is unable to have it regenerated thanks to her mystic biology.
• My God, What Have I Done?:
  • Jade freaks out when she nearly kills Kitty in a rage in the Tournament.
  • Jinx when she realizes that Jade Taking the Bullet for her may have resulted in her losing everything.
• Never My Fault: HIVE Academy has a class named "Irrational Blame Assignment". According to Mammoth, "you can get a pass even if you fail by just making a good argument on why your lousy grade somehow wasn't your fault".
• No Endor Holocaust: The Queen references this when she points out that the Oni covering the Earth in shadow would result in plants dying and the like. It turns out that covering the planet in shadow is only step one, with step two being sucking the entire sphere into the Shadow Realm.
• Noodle Incident:
  • At one point, Jade is sentenced to detention in the ominously-named "Pit". The narration then cuts to the following morning, with her stating that it was no big deal.
  • The Titans view footage of Gadjo fighting zombies, but we only read their reactions to what they see and a few of his lines. We don't actually get to see what he did.
  • Another one with Gadjo — he gets sent to the Pit for trying to feed a teacher to the HIVE's monster mascot.
  • When Beast Boy is gloating about having an Arch-Enemy in Jade, Raven threateningly reminds him about "the bubbles" in order to shut him up. Cyborg mentions it again to do the same a few chapters later.
  • Captain Hollywood goes up to show the class how to strangle a unicorn, and the scene cuts to a memorial service, mentioning how he got gored several times by it.
  • At one point, a fight with the Titans results in Gizmo being captured and Jade in hot water with the Tribunal. She ends up spending a week in the Chamber of Moderate Annoyances because Gadjo broke the Pit.
  • Gadjo apparently caused a temporal shift and rendered Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain Ret-Gone.
  • Whatever Cyborg did in those two minutes we didn't see that got him to convince Beast Boy that he's a better temporary leader than the changeling is.
  • Whatever event that led to the Buried Brick Homes and Gardens buildings being sunk underground and only able to be accessed from certain angles. All we know is that some cultist tried to summon an eldritch horror but was defeated by a Presbyterian with a bayonet and blessed gasoline. Also, apparently Batman once dialed Zatanna to warp a number of the tenants away, self-sustaining warps or portals to said location were banned after some Korean teenagers stumbled into it and tried to turn it into a budget horror flick, the previous resident of Jade's apartment ended up disintegrated, and anytime someone tries to get the internet to work down there it ends badly.
  • Poison Ivy was apparently banned from the Buried Brick apartments for killing someone who was supposedly unkillable by accident. The Joker and Harley were also banned, for several instances of causing unspecified harm to various residents.
• No-Sell:
  • Gadjo shrugs off just about everything thrown at him.
  • Jade is immune to mind manipulation due to several factors.
  • During the period when Jade is magically aged up, she gets hit with a giant Green Lantern ring-created fist, and gets whacked over the head with a baseball bat. Neither has any effect.
• Not-So-Harmless Villain: After the Time Skip, Evil Dick actually manages to capture Starfire off-screen, and if Star Chan hadn't managed to pull the plug, his device would have caused some serious damage. Robin even lampshades it and uses it as an example of why they shouldn't underestimate any villain.
• O.C. Stand-in: As per usual for Project fics, the Oni Generals get individual names and personalities.
• Odd Friendship: Jinx and Jade.
• Ominous Message from the Future: After Starfire's trip into the Bad Future depicted in the "How Long Is Forever?" episode, Nightwing sends her back with a letter to the present-day Robin, warning of some unspecified incident involving Jade that caused the Titans (already unstable following Starfire's disappearance) to fall apart completely. While the letter doesn't give details, Nightwing does imply that there's a moral quandary involved, and implores Robin to do the right thing. Initially, Robin thought the message referred to the "Star Chan" debacle — whether the Titans should leave a brainwashed-through-Starfire's-chi Zhu Chan to remain as she was — until Cyborg pointed out that Starfire would not have been available in Nightwing's timeline, having been sent to the future instead, so whatever he wanted to warn Robin about, it's either a different situation that yet has to play out, or one that has been prevented from happening.
• Original Characters: Gadjo, Machete, Susano (who also appears in Jewel of Darkness^note  References to Jewel's Missing Episode actually suggest that Susano and this one are the same individual. Later confirmed. ), The Cackler, Asuka-Tammy.
• Original Flavor: It's been commented on that both Jade and the TT characters are kept very much in character.
• Overnight Age-Up: Jade uses a magic staff (based on Mad Mod's technology) to steal Cyborg's age, making herself an adult while turning him into a kid.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: Jade sees through Cyborg's "Stone" disguise almost immediately, and is surprised that she's the only one.
• Politically Incorrect Villain: Subtle example, but Mumbo does seem to have a tendency to force women into being his "assistants". When he magically places Jinx in a rather revealing outfit, she comments on it being harassment.
• Power at a Price: Jade warns Jinx that her continued use of the amulet could have serious repercussions due the Balance Between Good and Evil basis of chi magic (not mentioning that it’s apparently making her appetite bigger even though she’s losing weight)
• Power Incontinence: When Jade is magically aged up, her powers grow to the point that she has little control over them. The worst is her ability to travel by shadow, where she keeps overshooting her target... by whole continents.
• Properly Paranoid:
  • Jade when interning for the Joker. She refuses to eat or drink anything that he gives her, sleeps as little as she can on the road trip from Jump back to Gotham, shoots down the Queen's suggestion of killing him, pointing out that others have tried before, and he'd probably survive and seek revenge, uses telekinesis to avoid the booby-traps in his lair and sleeps in Shadow Realm.
  • Arkham, in contrast to its Cardboard Prison reputation, actually takes its security, at least for the "living weapon" level inmates, rather seriously. Jade mainly gets Harley out by being audacious enough to use her shadow powers to go in with the food and exploiting a failsafe designed to let the less dangerous inmates out in a situation where the building is treathened by fire or similar disaster.
  • Penguin. He has mystical defenses against any magical villains who don't use the front door, uses a typewriter so his files can't be hacked...
• Psycho for Hire: Gadjo was apparently a freelance mercenary before even before being recruited by the HIVE. As for the "psycho" part, well, just look at some of the other tropes on this page.
• Psychic Block Defense: According to Word of God, Jade, being a higher-level Shadowkhan, has a natural resistance to mental powers that, combined with her willpower and a third factor (Tarakudo's presence in her mind), make Blood's Mind Control a No-Sell on her.
• Rapid Hair Growth: While fighting the Sumo Khan general, Gadjo is able to force a fully formed handlebar moustache to grow instantly.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
  • Jade delivers one to the Master of Games during their battle, in response to his claims that he always wins.
  Jade: Yeah, because you stack the deck. And brag about beating up a girl who has already fought hard while you sit on the sidelines. I know real badasses, and you don't even come close to the list.
  Master of Games: Enough of your impudence!
  Jade: Sloppy. You may have a lot of power, but you didn't earn it. They may not have been smart, but at least they know their own power, idiot.
  • Brother Blood gets a few minor ones from Slade and Tarakudo in the Super Jinx chapter.
  • Jade's What the Hell, Hero? rant at the Titans after being changed back from Star Chan has hints of this, most notably when she addresses Raven:
  "We're even. I don't think you would have done squat if the group told ya no, but you did at least want to do right by me."
• Real Dreams are Weirder:
  • Tarakudo uses this to keep Jade from realizing she's stumbled onto him messing around with her subconscious — he conjures multicolored mushrooms and ducks in top hats, then turns himself into a basketball with a mustache.
  • This works against him in the following chapter, as he tries to communicate with Jade, who's distracted by a dream of building a wall of sheep (using peanut butter as mortar) to stop a tidal wave of jelly.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning:
  • At one point, Jade discusses this trope with Beast Boy, and whether or not it necessarily makes someone evil.
  • Played straight, of course, when Raven's dark side briefly takes out when she's fighting Machete in the Tournament.
• Revenge by Proxy: After Jade's apparent death, resulting from the Titans' actions, a distraught Jinx destroys their favorite pizza place.
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Once Kitten revives from Killer Moth's Emergency Transformation, she immediately decides to go looking for Jade to get revenge, after knocking her father out and leaving him on the floor. She then targets the HIVE Honor Roll and curbstomps them until Gizmo tells her where Jade is.
• Running Gag:
  • There's apparently an offscreen one about Jade's potions exploding.
  • Jade's clothes being destroyed by a magic explosion.
  • During the Tournament of Villainesses, Raven reminding people that she isn't a villain.
  • Also, Jinx has asked Jade multiple times if she's part-goat (because of her Extreme Omnivore tendencies).
  • People getting annoyed by Beast Boy insisting Jade is his Arch-Enemy, and reminding him of "the bubbles" to shut him up. Also, Jade getting annoyed when others insist on the same thing.

• Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
  • Susano and his team try to corner Jade for a beating at one point, only for Gadjo to show up and curbstomp one of them. The other teammate runs off, and Susano wisely leaves too after a few parting insults.
  • For a more comedic example, when Jinx and Jade are attending a seminar on minion management, there's a video of Gadjo killing a previous employer for threatening his pies. Around the time he rips off the guy's head and throws it at the camera, the girls decide to ditch out on the rest of the seminar.
  • When Jade finds herself facing a Green Lantern rather than the Titans, she runs away without even trying to fight.
• Second Super-Identity: When working for Penguin to Work Off the Debt for healing her, Jade goes by Karasu, as she fears that the HIVE will come after her for her internship with Joker falling apart.
• Secret Identity:
  • Jade takes on the name Zhu Chan ("Bad Omen") as her villain persona. Notably, this is the only name any character in the Titans universe know her by, even the villains, and most seem to think it's her real one. Meanwhile, the narration switches back and forth on which to refer to her as, depending on the situation.
  • She takes on a second one while working for Penguin, Karasu, Japanese for "Raven", due to her new bird features.
• Senseless Sacrifice: Jade trying to take a spell for Jinx doesn't do anything. The spell passes right through her and hits Jinx regardless, destroying Hwan's Talisman and freeing her from its influence, and it causes a reaction that reduces her body to formless shadow.
• Shear Menace: After Jade's chi is reunited, Jinx gives her a pair of scissors that she's magically enhanced as a new weapon. At a spoken command, they grow to garden shears size, and the blades can separate.
• Shipper on Deck: Gadjo ships Robin and Raven, since it fits his Insane Troll Logic for romance.
• Slasher Smile:
  • Due to her now pointy teeth, Jade tends to do this by default. Raven wonders if she's even aware of it.
  • The Oni give these in reaction to Blood's You and What Army? inquiry, before summoning their armies.
• Slipped the Ropes: Subverted. In one chapter, Jade tries to dislocate her thumbs in order to slip out of some magic handcuffs. All she has to show for it is sore thumbs, as it's a lot harder to intentional dislocate your own body parts than the movies make it look.
• Slowly Slipping Into Evil: Joker works out with disturbing accuracy Jade's real background from Blood's notes and what little he's seen of her, realizing she was, and still views herself as, a hero. Annoyed by her attempt to survive in villainy until she can either return or become a hero, he notes that the slide is happening anyway... and despite knowing she's quite a lot further downhill than even she realizes, he decides she's not going down fast enough and arranges for a torture and More than Mind Control session to break her spirit to make the rest of the fall faster.
• Spit Take: When told over breakfast that she's being teamed up with Gadjo, Jade spits her miso into Jinx's face. The latter is not amused.
• Split-Personality Merge:
  • The Queen suggests that this is naturally occurring between her and Jade, due to a combination of Jade's transformation and the loss of her Morality Chain (her family), and that the combined being will have her desire to do whatever she wants, but with Jade's cunning (which the Queen herself lacked last time).
  • The Queen ultimately settles for a Split-Personality Takeover (with help from Tarakudo), in order to survive Taking the Bullet for Jinx, but makes it clear she still wants a full merge.
• Squishy Wizard: Averted. Jade's costume is to sell the fact that she uses magic and martial arts, and she once mentally commented that between martial arts, the Talisman powers, and magic, her first choice will be all of the above.
• Stealth Hi/Bye:
  • Jade, naturally, now with the added help of her ability to hide in shadows.
  • She actually ends up on the receiving end herself a few times, usually from Gadjo and Jinx.
  • Slade does this to Blood, for no apparent reason other than rubbing the latter's face in his inferiority.

• Strange Minds Think Alike: Apparently Beast Boy and Gadjo are on the same page when it comes to understanding romance.
• Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: When a post-Emergency Transformation Jade lashes out at Joker in pain and rage after he tortures her, he encourages her to cross the line and kill him, taking joy in the idea of his death corrupting her. She actually tries, before Batman intervenes.
• Stupid Evil: In-universe, the Queen admits to both Jade and Tarakudo that her light side is the one with the most intelligence, with her mentioning to Jade how she didn't notice Tohru in Shadowkhan garb the first time she appeared.
• Summon Bigger Fish:
  • When Jade is sent to break Machete out of prison, only for it to turn into a fight with Raven and Starfire, Jade lets Cinderblock out of his cell in order to keep the Titan girls busy.
  • Jade ends up on the receiving end, as after she magically ages herself up, she's declared such a threat to be worth the Justice League's attention, resulting in the Green Lantern being sent after her.
• Synchronization: When Jade attacks the Queen's avatar after the latter insults Jackie, she feels the pain too.

  • Gadjo goes back in time specifically to Ret-Gone Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain.
  • Gadjo eating, and badly digesting, the pie containing Mother Mae Eye, reflects how the author despised both the character and her whole episode.

• Taking the Bullet: Jade ends up taking a spell meant for Jinx, which leaves her catatonic.
• Taking You with Me: When the Oni are being re-sealed, Tarakudo attempts to kill the treacherous Queen/Kagehime, but is prevented by Jinx.
• Tempting Fate:
  • Brother Blood uses the classic "You and What Army?" line, only for the Oni to summon their Shadowkhan...
  • In chapter 12, the Titans burst in to rescue Starfire and stop Evil Dick right after he makes a "who could stop me now" comment.
• That Man Is Dead: Tarakudo invokes this when talking to Jade in Gotham, saying that her "Zhu Chan" identity is more who she is than "Jade" now, calling her by the former name.
• They Called Me Mad!: Evil Dick rants this about him and his father during chapter 12.
• This Is Your Brain on Evil: Using the Talisman of Hwan, Jinx boosts her powers manyfold, but is left highly unstable and paranoid. And on top of that, her physical status deteriorates significantly.
• Time Skip: There's an in-universe two-month gap between Chapters 11 and 12.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl: Jade and Jinx, respectively. Jade is tomboyish, hating girly stuff, while Jinx is more feminine, wears dresses, and squees when she sees a unicorn.
• Too Dumb to Live: Despite the skepticism of his students regarding his plan to strangle a unicorn (including a student who tried to strangle a horse, only to end up getting kicked in the face, requiring him to wear a mask), Captain Hollywood goes ahead with it, only for the story to cut to his memorial service. It's even said he died an idiot's death.
• Two Beings, One Body: Asuka-Tammy is two formerly-human women of those names, who were transformed into a Spider Woman with a shared body below the torsos due to being eaten and digested by an Eldritch Abomination-serving Giant Spider which they then ate their way out of.
• Underestimating Badassery: After his plan is foiled, it's lampshaded that Evil Dick's Not-So-Harmless Villain moment was in part due to the Titans underestimating him.
• Villainous BSoD: After Jade Taking the Bullet for her results in her being rendering a formless mass of shadow, and Susano sends what is left to the Shadow Realm, apparently killing her, Jinx becomes depressed (apparently neglecting her hygiene) and destroys the Titan's favorite pizza place for petty Revenge against them, without any real plan, and has to be rescued by Gadjo.
• Villainous Breakdown: When Raven beats Jade out of his pendant, and during Jade's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to him, Master of Games loses his composure briefly for the only time in the chapter (save his defeat), though he manages to catch himself quickly.
• Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Jinx says something similar when she grabs Jade after the mess with Mumbo and leaves.
• Villain Has a Point: After the Journey to the Center of the Mind, Jade is forced to admit that the Queen has a point or two in regards to how much she's changed (like eating metal and wood, preferring less light, etc.), and decides to step up her game (as she refuses to accept the changes the Queen has in mind, even if she admits to them).
  • Tarakudo makes several points when Jade and the Queen talk to him in Gotham, much as Jade hates to admit it.
• Weaksauce Weakness:
  • Just like another fic by the author, Jade's transformation has granted her the Oni weakness to onions. She protests to Beast Boy that it does not qualify as a Kryptonite Factor.
  • When the Oni and Shadowkhan attack the H.I.V.E., Gizmo managed to weaponize this.
• Wham Episode:
  • "Super Jinx!" It ends with Jade adrift in the Shadow Realm and Tarakudo ready to make his move.
  • The next chapter has Tarakudo making a deal with the Queen (as Jade's light side is MIA), with the Queen regaining physical form (albeit without hair) and breaking Tarakudo's mask to free him and the Oni Generals, who proceed to take over the HIVE and create a dome of shadow over Jump City, with a second wave of shadow that repels any beings that aren't normal humans (even Superman), with the intent of covering the entire Earth in shadow so they can drag it into the Shadow Realm.
  • "Joke's On Her (Part 2)" Jade rats out Joker to Batman in order to get out from under him, but after he's inadvertently freed from police custody by the mutated Kitten, he tracks Jade down and proceeds to torture her by carving up her face. The pain causes her to undergo an Emergency Transformation into a Higher Shadowkhan, turning her into a bird-like creature. She then almost kills Joker before Batman intervenes and sends her fleeing.
• What Happened to the Mouse?:
  • So far, Jackie and the rest of the JCA gang haven't been seen (except in the interlude, where we see El Toro and the Demon Sorcerers along with the Immortals) at all, and have only been mentioned in passing.
  • Jade's light side has apparently vanished entirely as of chapter 10. It's found and restored in Chapter 12.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Cyborg threatens to leave the team if they don't return Jade's missing chi, essentially brainwashing her. Jade likewise isn't happy when she returns to normal.
• Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: There's an odd variation here, in that Jade was apparently traumatized by the experience the last time she was turned into a monkey, so she's understandably freaked out when it happens again.
• With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Jinx starts becoming noticeably unhinged after she uses the amulet for a power boost.
• The Worf Effect:
  • Not even Superman can breach the Oni's barrier. Possibly justified by the fact that Superman is often depicted as vulnerable to magic, so it working on him isn't unheard of.
  • The mutated Kitten is so strong that a desperate Jade is barely able to harm her during their fight. Though the fact that this is Jade's first serious bit of combat since losing the Pig and Dragon talismans does play a significant part in that.
• Work Off the Debt: After Jade's wounded by the Joker, the Penguin finds her and has her treated, but she has to pay off her debt to him afterward this way, with him loaning her out as a temp to other villains. After her job with Scarecrow falls through, he cuts her loose (but says she still has to pay him back).
• Worthy Opponent: Gadjo apparently views Jade as one, and she can't decide whether that means he wants to be her friend or if he wants to kill her.
• Wretched Hive: Gotham, as usual. Jade even feels it in the city's shadows.
• You and What Army?: Blood asks this of the Oni when they demand the HIVE's surrender. They respond by summoning their Shadowkhan armies.
  Tarakudo: I was so hoping you would say that.
• "You!" Exclamation: Jade's reaction to Beast Boy the first time she runs into him after he hit her with an onion.
