Fan Nickname / Devil May Cry

Go To

As the Devil May Cry series became a long-runner, the fandom has accumulated a lot of Fan Nicknames for its characters, items, and gameplay mechanics.

General and Recurring Nicknames

  • "Wacky Woohoo Pizza Man" - Dante for his fun-loving, carefree, devil-may-care personality, stylish fighting style, and love for pizza. In fan discussions, this is usually associated with his DMC3 and DMC4 appearances, especially with the latter where he's seen having fun even after The Savior has already absorbed Nero. Later updated to "Wacky Woohoo Pizza Hobo" for DMC5 due to his older and slightly more unkempt appearance. More pizza-related Dante nicknames emerged over the years, such as "Pizza Enthusiast" and "Pizza Gremlin."
  • "Cutscene Dante" - Because the series just loves to take advantage of the Cutscene Power to the Max trope, Dante's gameplay mechanics are often differentiated to the more awesome stuff that he can do in cutscenes, with fans even joking that Cutscene Dante is a different entity compared to his in-game counterpart.
  • "Weeb" - Vergil's spiky hair and stylish coat are noted to be tropes typically found in manga/anime, while his Yamato is a katana, and his primary fighting style is iaijutsu; both originating from Japan. Generally, his Japanese influences stand out from the rest of the cast, and fans noticed it. The modders and meme editors even took it into another level, depicting him as an anime fan who sometimes uses anime body pillows in place of his Yamato's sheath. This occasionally gets backported to Sparda as well, since Sparda — who originates from a realm completely separate from the human world — was responsible for gifting Vergil Yamato in the first place and shared a similar sense of fashion.
  • "The Storm (That is Approaching)" - The chorus of Vergil's Leitmotif in DMC5:SE, "Bury the Light", begins with "I am the storm that is approaching", so the fandom began to address him as such. While it started with 5, fans also retroactively use it as a general nickname for Vergil, even in DMC3 (though semi-justified, as the lyric is a Call-Back to one of Arkham's lines in that game) and in his crossover appearance in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • "Motivation Gauge" - Vergil's Concentration Gauge mechanic/meter in the Special Editions of DMC4 and DMC5, based on a rather popular quote from his boss fights in DMC3.
  • "Motivated Man" - A nickname for Vergil, yet another one that came from his memetic quotes.
  • "Uncle Dante" - Dante, thanks to his in-game portrayal and relationship with Nero. This started in DMC4 as it was originally hinted in the Deadly Fortune novelization, officially confirmed by the Devil May Cry: 3-1-4-2 Graphic Arts artbook and one of the producers of 5. It returned in DMC5 because of Dante's older appearance in that game and being a Cool Uncle in general, further cemented when he finally reveals to Nero the truth about their family lineage.
  • Just like the "Uncle Dante" nickname, "Papa Vergil" has been a thing since 4 because him being Nero's father was hinted by that game and other related sources. Returned in full force in 5 due to The Reveal being the first time a canonical entry confirmed this in-game.
  • "Desperation* Devil Trigger" ("DDT"), "Majin Form" - Dante's low health Nigh-Invulnerability Super Mode which made its debut in DMC2. The secret transformation didn't have an official English name, but "Majin Form" is a common fan nickname for it, which was canonized later on by the English version of the 3142 Graphic Arts artbook. More than a decade later, Dante's Sin Devil Trigger was first shown in a trailer before DMC5 came out, and because fans were quickly reminded of this alternate Devil Trigger mode from, the form was called "Majin Form" yet again before its official name is revealed.
  • "Rorb", "Gorb", "Grorb", "Blorb", "Yorb" - Portmanteau nicknames for the Red Orb, Gold Orb, Green Orb, Blue Orb, and Yellow Orb items.
  • "Journalist Mode" - The Easy/Easy Automatic difficulty mode, which trivializes the challenge of the games. It usually comes with the bonus of simplifying the complex combos, allowing players to button mash their way into the end. This was further popularized after the fandom also made "Journalist Music" memes following the release of Devil May Cry 5 and its Variable Mix effect.
  • In addition to the aforementioned Majin Form, acronyms are used as alternatives for weapons, concepts, mechanics and abilities that have long names. For example, "JC" means Judgement Cut, "JCE" means Judgement Cut End, "DSS" means Devil Sword Sparda, "DSD" means Devil Sword Dante, and "BP" means Bloody Palace. This naming trend became more common as Capcom officially used more acronyms in the later games and re-releases, such as Devil Trigger being called "DT" in loading screen tips, or the Dante Must Die mode being called "DMD" in achievement icons.
  • "Jump Cancel" - A gameplay exploit utilizing Lag Cancel wherein you perform an aerial move, use Enemy Step to bounce off an enemy while both of you are airborne in order to reset your aerial state, repeat the move that can normally only be done once in a single jump, and then jump off the enemy again.
  • "Judgement Nut" - A comical nickname for Judgement Cut, Vergil's quick draw Signature Move.
  • "Judgement Nut End", "Judgement Nut Never End" - Comical nicknames for Judgement Cut End, Vergil's Limit Break with the Yamato in 4 and 5.
  • The original continuity is mostly called the "Classic Continuity" in order to differentiate it from the DmC Alternate Continuity. As a result, some characters from the original continuity are prefixed with the word "Classic" (e.g. "Classic Dante", "Classic Vergil") to separate them from their DmC counterparts.

Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry 2

  • "Duntee" - Dante, exclusively for his DMC2 version. Most likely due to his turn as The Stoic, which is widely out of character with just about any other depiction of Dante (save for maybe his more subdued characterization in TAS). Sometimes counted as an completely different character from Dante despite showing flashes of his usual personality towards the end of his campaign, which is aided by the PS2 version of Viewtiful Joe having Dante mention that Enzo stole his costume again (thereby alleging that the "Dante" seen in 2 was actually Enzo) and the fact that, as revealed in 3-1-4-2 Graphic Arts, that game's Dante was originally meant to be someone else entirely.
  • "Stinger Level 0" - The oddly nerfed version of the Stinger move in this game. Only applicable to Dante, as Trish's Stinger functions identically to the DMC1 version.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

  • "Vante" - The red coat-wearing Vergil clone fought in Vergil Mode of the Special Edition. A lesser-known nickname for the boss is "Red Vergil."
  • "American Hard" - The "Very Hard" difficulty mode unique to the Special Edition, as the original Western release downplayed the names of the difficulty modes when compared to the Japanese version (i.e. the Western release took the Japanese Hard mode and labeled it as the Normal mode). The Special Edition was released by Capcom in order to adjust the modes and their names, as an apology for making the North American version too difficult even by series standards.
  • "Chess Board", "Satan's Chess Board" - Sixteen pieces of the Damned Chessmen all team up in the Damned Chess Board area of Mission 18 to "simulate" a chess game while fighting you, so the segment is simply named as such.
  • "The Door" - The demonic arms that block passageways. This nickname came into use in May 2021 when Gawr Gura of hololive played the Nintendo Switch port and unlocked Easy Mode by dying to a door (specifically the blue demonic arm variant), of all things. On her next stream, Jester spawned the red demonic arms during his boss fight, and then the chat spammed "The Door" to reference the previous incident.

Devil May Cry 4

  • "Bleach May Cry" - The game, for having the same English voice actors and Damsel in Distress plot as the manga. The fandom also gave Bleach-related nicknames to some characters and concepts present here:
    • "Ichigo" - Nero, because he has the same voice actor, a BFS, and the same attitude as him.
    • "Bankai" - Nero's Devil Trigger.
    • "Getsuga Tenshou" - The Sword Beams Nero creates while performing his Maximum Bet skill, as well as other instances of sword shockwaves that he produces in cutscenes.
    • "Orihime" - Kyrie, because of her hair color and voice actress, as well as her clothes resembling Orihime's when she is a hostage of the Arrancars.
  • "Captain Awesome" - Hero Antagonist Credo.
  • "Lady Gaga" - Trish's "Gloria" persona, due to their physical similarities, and because Lady Gaga made her debut in 2008 not long after the release of this game. The timing did not go unnoticed by the DMC fans.
  • "Stand", "Stand Trigger" - Since Nero's Devil Trigger summons a spectral entity that floats above him, it has been called with these names as a reference to the Stands from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
  • "Fortuna Lady", "Fortuna Woman", "Woman in Red" - The suspicious red-clothed woman who glances at Vergil during his opening cutscene in the Special Edition. The fandom believes that she's Nero's mother.
  • "Missile Platform" - A shorter descriptive nickname for the Pandora's PF594: Argument form.
  • "Shadow Dante" - The all-black Palette Swap Mirror Boss fought by Dante in Floor 101 of the Bloody Palace mode.
  • "Dice Game" - The Snakes and Ladders-esque puzzle segments weren't given official terms, but the phrase "dice game" stuck because of its main gimmick of attacking a huge die.
  • "The Glass Boss" - The fight against Agnus in Mission 6 is a Puzzle Boss fight where you need to break a wide glass screen that separates you from him. Since the fight's "boss health bar" is tied to the screen's durability, this nickname rose as a joke to the fact that you're just trying to destroy a very durable glass pane.

Devil May Cry 5

  • During its early reveal hype, the game was called "DmC: Devil May Cry 2", thanks to the more modern setting and Nero resembling the 2013 reboot's Dante.
  • After his appearance at the end of the TGS 2018 trailer, V has been jokingly, or non-jokingly depending on one's views of the character, named "Kylo Ren" or "Goth Adam Driver" due to his apparent resemblance to Adam Driver.
  • "Vitale" was the most popular guess and placeholder for V's full name before his true identity was revealed.
  • After the system that allowed players to spend Red Orbs to revive was revealed, it was quickly christened the "Scrub Tax" by the veteran players.
  • The game is officially titled Devil May Cry 5 and abbreviated as DMC5, yet many fans still respectively write them as "Devil May Cry V" and "DMCV" likely due to the presence of the stylistic Roman numeral "V" in the title's logo.
  • The sarcastic "Father of the Year" title goes to Vergil quite a bit, considering he ripped away Nero's Devil Bringer at the start of the game only to discover in the end that Nero is his son.
  • The Devil May Cry Motorhome, Nico's van, is called "Van-kun" by some fans who treat the vehicle like an actual character due to its durability. It's derived from the "Truck-kun" memetic fan nickname used by the anime community.
  • "Feather Face" for V's familiar Griffon, in reference to Dante's "Flock off, feather face!" quote to the original Griffon who served Mundus in the first game.
  • Dante's unlockable hat weapon is officially named Dr. Faust, yet fans sometimes call it "Faust Hat" for simplicity.
  • "Deadweight" for Nero. It was a harsh comment directed towards him by Dante who tells him to back off against Urizen, but due to Nero's response, its repetition and sheer memetic value, the fandom also uses it as a nickname for him.
  • "Urinate" is a joke nickname for Urizen, as popularized by Max0r in his "Incorrect Summary" video for the game.
  • "Demonic Tree Man" is a Buffy Speak nickname for Urizen due to his body being covered by the Qliphoth's roots in most of his screentime. It's also a fan nickname popularized by Outside Xbox when they covered DMC5 in one of their videos.
  • "Ergil" for Urizen, which came as a result of a commonly copy-pasted joke/meme phrase suggesting "Ergil" is Urizen's real name in reference to him being a personified half of Vergil just like V, and V's One-Letter Name also sharing the first letter of Vergil's name.
  • V is called "Five" simply because the Roman numeral V represents 5. This is also one of the joke nicknames spread further by Max0r.
  • "Vergil DLC" and "Ladies' Night DLC" - Two popular hypothetical/rumored DLC campaigns that made rounds on the Internet. One involves Dante and a playable Vergil fighting their way out of the underworld, while another focuses on Trish, Lady and Lucia running Devil May Cry while Dante is gone. The former slowly became discredited after Vergil became playable in the Special Edition and was made as a separate DLC for those who already own the base game.
  • The taunts obtained for completing Bloody Palace are officially called "Special Provocation", but the fanbase just calls them the "Bloody Palace Taunts" or "BP Taunts".
  • The taunts that can be purchased for 3 million Red Orbs are officially called "EX Provocation", but the fanbase simply just calls them the "3 Million Orb Taunts".
  • Vergil's spectral blades are officially called "Mirage Blades" in this game, but fans mostly call them "Summoned Swords", their original name from the previous games.
  • "Steve" for Vergil's blue doppelganger, a joke nickname that came about because of some meme posts in the Devil May Cry subreddit, but has also spread to other online platforms, as shown in this YouTube comment.
  • Fans have also been using "Judy" as some kind of Affectionate Nickname or shorthand for the Hell Judecca demons.
  • "Motivated Combo" for a certain sequence of moves typically set to an unofficial edit of "Bury the Light", usually timed at the a capella chorus ("I am the storm that is approaching") when the final hit lands (typically Judgment Cut End).

Devil May Cry: The Animated Series

  • To go along with the trend of simplifying the titles of DMC media (e.g. DMC4 being called 4, etc.), this anime adaptation is often simply referred to by the acronym "TAS", especially when the franchise's chronology is discussed.
