  • The Matsuno family has it downplayed in that the biggest change in the translated names is the utilization of cross-lingual Alternate Character Reading in the surname (松野) and half of the given name (the other half of the given name having a less concrete translation due to Alternate Character Reading within Japanese itself).
    1. Osomatsu Matsuno (松野 おそ松) to Sung Ye Tai-sung (松野大松, Sūng'yéh Daaih'sūng). The character 大 (daaih) means "big/great", or is otherwise an indicator of seniority (i.e. "Eldest").
    2. Karamatsu Matsuno (松野 カラ松) to Sung Ye Yee-sung (松野二松, Sūng'yéh Yih'sūng). The character 二 (yih) means "two", or "second" in this context.
    3. Choromatsu Matsuno (松野 チョロ松) to Sung Ye Sam-sung (松野三松, Sūng'yéh Sāamsūng). The character 三 (sāam) means "three", or "third" in this context. And no, don't laugh at how Cantonese transliteration works, we didn't make the rules or the translation.
    4. Jyushimatsu Matsuno (松野 十四松) to Sung Ye Sei-song (松野四松, Sūng'yéh Seisūng). The original Japanese name puns on the name of a bird through Fun with Homophones, but the joke is lost on Cantonese speakers for obvious reasons, so the translators ditched it and kept up the Numerical Theme Naming.
    5. Ichimatsu Matsuno (松野 一松) to Sung Ye Ng-sung (松野五松, Sūng'yéh Ńgh'sūng). The character 一 (ichi in Japanese) means "one", which would be misleading and thus naturally, the Numerical Theme Naming indicating the sibling seniority pattern is kept up in the translation.
    6. Todomatsu Matsuno (松野 トド松) to Sung Ye Luk-sung (松野六松, Sūng'yéh Luhk'sūng).
  • Iyami to Sai Gua Pau (西瓜刨, Sāigwā'pàauh, lit. "watermelon cutter")
  • Chibita to Sam Chun Teng (三串丁, Sāamchyun'dēng), most likely in reference to his small stature
  • Totoko to Miu-tsz (妙子, Miuh'jí)

• Ranma ½: In the early Taiwanese translation, the names (in particular, the surnames) were adapted into Chinese rather than what they would do later on by transliterating the Japanese names.
  • Ranma Saotome (早乙女 乱馬) to Jī Luànmǎ (姬亂馬). However, this is downplayed in that their given name of Ranma is just pronounced in the Chinese Alternate Character Reading.
  • Genma Saotome (早乙女 玄馬) to Jī Xuánmáo (姬玄毛). Slightly downplayed in that the character 玄 (gen in Japanese and xuán in Mandarin) is used with cross-lingual Alternate Character Reading, but the rest is changed entirely.
  • Akane Tendou (天道 茜) to Qián Xiǎoqiàn (錢小茜, roughly pronounced "chien siao-chien"). However, this is downplayed in that her given name is provided with Alternate Character Reading—the character 茜 is Akane in Japanese and Qiàn in Mandarin Chinese, and the original Taiwanese translation adds the prefix 小 (xiǎo, "little") to her name, which doesn't change her name all that significantly.
  • Soun Tendou (天道 早雲) to Qián Tiāndào (錢天道). Weirdly, the original Japanese character's surname 天道 (Tendou) is co-opted as the character's given name in the translation.
  • Nabiki Tendou (天道 靡) to Qián Xiǎomí (錢小靡). Downplayed in the same way Akane's name is, prefix included.
  • Kasumi Tendou (天道 霞) to Qián Xiǎoxiá (錢小霞, roughly pronounced "chien siao-shya"). Downplayed in the same way Akane's name is, prefix included.
  • Ryoga Hibiki (響 良牙) to Xiàng Liángyá (向良牙, surname pronounced roughly "shiang"). Downplayed due to Alternate Character Reading, similar to Ranma's case above.
  • Ukyo Kunoji (久遠寺 右京) to Yàn Yòujīng (燕右京). Downplayed due to Alternate Character Reading, as above.
  • Dr. Ono (surname 小乃) to Dr. Xǔ (許醫師, surname pronounced roughly "shyu")

  • Muten Roshi/Kame-Sennin to Tartaruga Genial (Genius Turtle, oddly not the other way around) in Portugal and Master Kame in Brazil.
  • Mr. Satan to Hércules, ironically because, like in the French dub, someone had already been named after Satan, rather than due to attempts at avoiding religious references.
  • Majin Buu to Bubu (though Uub, who was originally Buu reversed, kept his name)
  • All the androids were refered to as C<number> (C18, C19 etc.) except for Number 8, nicknamed Eighter, whose nickname was changed to Super 8.
  • Goku and his descendants (except Pan) had Son attached (Son-Goku, Son-Gohan and Son-Goten), as in the original version. The exception is Goku's adoptive grandfather, called Son-Gokan instead of Son-Gohan, for some reason (probably bad handwriting). His name was only ever given once or twice, so it doesn't come up that often.
  • Chi-Chi was changed to Quica (short form of Francisca), as the original name would've meant pee (the Brazilian dub averted this, but made sure to keep the pronounciation clear).
  • Kakarrot, Goku's Saiyan name, is avoided altogether in the dub of Z, but as there wasn't a French dub of GT to base the Portuguese script on, Vegeta's quirk is dealt with by having him randomly call Goku strange words like "cachalote" (sperm whale).
  • Kaio-sama to Kaibe (and the move named after him, the Kaio-Ken, is simply named Ataque do Kaibe, literally "Kai's Attack")
  • The Taiyoken was called Mordedura do Sol (The Sun's Bite)
  • Other attack names weren't so lucky as to have a consistent translation; Even the Kamehameha frequently drops the "ha" at the end, or is at least for one episode renamed Luz Infinita (Infinite Light) before switching back. To top it off, the one time Masenko was named (and not erroneously called the Kamehameha), Gohan exclaimed "O Raio Do Diabo!" (The Devil's Ray), which, due to a coincidence in the words used, sounded like he was cursing.

  • Up until the 2018 anime, all adaptations gave the Japanese players translated names in the Latin American dub, most of which coincided with the Spaniard dub. Some were lucky to retain either their first or last names, such as Roberto Hongo (his surname was changed to Sedinho, possibly to sound more Brazilian), the Tachibana twins (their surname was changed to Korioto) and Kojiro Hyuga (given was changed to Steve).

  • The first Doraemon movie, 'Nobita´s Dinosaur' was dubbed in 1980 as 'Los cuentos de Pepito' based on the fact that the anime was not well-known in Mexico at the time and naming Nobita 'Pepito' based on 'Pepito, el de los cuentos' the main character of several Latin American jokes. Doraemon was renamed 'Robotin' (Small Robot, despite the fact is not a robot), Shizuka to Andrea, Suneo to Henrique and Takeshi to Cantimplora (Canteen).
• Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT (Mexican dub - averted in the Mexican print of the manga). It also uses most of the Japanese name pronunciations, except for Vegeta (with the "ge" spelled phonetically as "Geh" instead of the original Japanese's "Jee") (It's averted with his homeworld and his fusions with Goku, Vegeto and Gogeta, who use the original pronunciation) and Krillin, which uses the English pronunciation. Piccolo is a special case, written the same way as in English, but with the Japanese pronunciation, Pīkoro.
  • Chichi to Milk - In Spanish, the word "chichi" is slang for girl parts (which was oddly left untouched un Spain); in Mexico it's slang for breast (which curiously, matches one of the meanings for the original Japanese name)
