Just some notes for a Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V fanfic idea (which for the record is stolen).

And yes. As the title says, it's a Super Fic.

Notes are by Lermis.

Works based on this:

    open/close all folders

Setting

  • Applied Phlebotinum: Excessive use of Real Solid Vision. That in turn can be used for anything from transformation to teleportation.
  • Badass Family: All the Akabas are incredible duelists. Those who have the surname are known for being grandiose and overwhelming in style, having a larger than life air.
  • Beware the Superman: Especially prominent in the Xyz Dimension, but there are always people who are weary of the superheroes.
  • Big Brother Is Watching: Every dimension has this to some degree, but in Synchro it's in dystopian levels.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The Akabas.
  • Bread and Circuses: The Synchro Dimension in a nutshell.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The Dimensional and Supreme King Dragons follow this pattern: Dimensional Dragon, [X] [summoning method] Dragon. Needless to say, some of this gets cut.
  • Follow the Leader: All of them preach Sakaki Yusho's ideals.
  • Hard Light: Real Solid Vision technology, which allows the holograms from the duel disks to materialize. This in turn has many, many uses.
  • MacGuffin: So many of them. We gave:
    • The Numbers.
    • The Signer Dragons.
    • The Heavenly - and by extension, the Supreme King - Dragons.
    • The Bracelets.
  • Magic Versus Science: While most of the superheroes use Hard Light tech, there are those who have inexplicable abilities that greatly baffle the scientific community. After all, duel monster spirits are supposed to be just a myth.
  • Morality Kitchen Sink
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Literally anything involving the Numbers.
    • How did Ute die?
    • How did Syun join the Resistance?
    • Yuzu fell off a skyscraper once?
    • What happened to Team Satisfaction?
  • Patchwork Fic: This fanfic combines ARC-V with Zexal and 5Ds.
  • People's Republic of Tyranny: The Synchro Dimension is presented as a place of opportunity. It really isn't.
  • Police Brutality: The Synchro Dimension. Good God the Synchro Dimension.
  • Police State: Guess which.
  • Running Gag:
    • Yoko is from the Synchro Dimension.
    • Synchro Dimension is a bad influence.
    • "How about you Xyz guys lend us a few heroes?"
    • Everything is the Akabas' fault.
    • "...and then we ran into those Allies of Justice guys with the stolen van..."
  • Spell My Name With An S: The names are spelled as their Versus Character Splash form. So we have:
    • Yuto => Ute
    • Yugo => Hugo
    • Yuri => Joeri
    • Shun => Syun
    • Reira => Layra
  • Super Fic: It's in the title.
  • Tangled Family Tree: The Akaba / Hiiragi / Kurosaki family. So, Akaba Leo has three children.
    • The second child is Reiji, from his marriage with Himika. OK, normal.
    • The third child is Layra, who is adopted. OK, still fine.
    • The first child is the complicated case. Rei comes from Leo's previous marriage, making her Reiji's half sister - which admittedly is something that happens frequently - BUT; Rei was broken down in four fragments (Yuzu, Serena, Rin and Ruri) who are younger than Reiji. In addition, Yuzu has her own dad Shuzo, and Ruri has her own older brother Syun. You figure out the rest.
  • Theme Naming:
    • Each of Zarc's fragments have the kanji "Yu" for "game" in their names.
    • Doubles with Family Theme Naming; the members of the Akaba family have the kanji for zero in their names.
    • The four bracelet girls follow the Kachou Fuugetsu principle in both their names and decks.
  • Transformation Sequence: Thanks to Hard Light - or magic for those who have it - they can change into their superhero clothes at the drop of a hat.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: All over the place.
  • Wrong Context Magic: If a veteran superhero sees the newer ones in action, they WILL be confused because Real Solid Vision and the Four Natural Energies weren't a thing in their day.
  • Zig-Zagging Trope:
    • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: The thing with superheroes is that a) they DO break the law and b) they can easily escape arrest. While the Standard team have a really family-friendly image and the Synchro team was persecuted anyway, the Resistance has many non-powered and notorious members, and access to tech that has never been seen before, making them open targets on the one hand, but nobody daring to take them on on the other.
    • Secret Identity. The "yu" boys wear domino masks, which are not actually effective for hiding a face. Most of the others don't even bother hiding their faces. Overall, the costumes are Paper Thin Disguises. Does this mean their real identities are publicly known? No. After all, only those who know them from their civilian lives would recognize them. But they do get in trouble with those who do.

Characters

Standard

The Lancers

The Festival

    general

    Sakaki Yuya / Red Jester
Deck: Entermate, Magician, Odd-Eyes

The son of Yusho Sakaki, a famous entertainer known for his philosophy.

  • All-Loving Hero: He wants to spread smiles with his dueling to everyone.
  • Always Save the Girl: When there's danger his mind always goes to Yuzu first thing.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: He is the "central piece" of Zarc's fragments, and the one who brought Pendulum Summoning to the world, which is meant to be Zarc's ultimate weapon.
  • Attention Whore: He's an Entertainment duelist. He lives for the spotlight.
  • Badass Biker: Not very often, but he learnt from his mom.
  • Badass Cape: A white hooded one with golden trimmings.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: His costume is essentially an orange tuxedo with short sleeves, much like what a circus master or magician would wear.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting his dad's philosophy.
  • Chest Insignia: A glowing V. Nobody's quite sure what it stands for.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Among the other things mentioned here, he can also summon and communicate with Duel Monster Spirits.
  • Domino Mask: Which does nothing to hide his identity, but who cares. It's the symbolism that counts.
  • Dual Wielding: He uses twin falchions.
  • Duality Motif: Not blatandly obvious, but it's there.
    • He wields two swords at once.
    • All his dragons have heterochromia, which is also emulated in Yuya's costume.
    • His main deck monsters are mostly circus animals, but his high level and extra deck monsters are dragons and mages with brutal effects.
  • Fiery Redhead: He can get very fired up during fights or duels.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Subverted. 90% of the time, he only wears them over his head as decoration, but he puts them on properly when he's dealing with really bright flashes or debris.
  • Hammerspace: He can materialize his swords out of thin air.
  • Hard Light: He can summon in the real world without the need of an Action Field or even a duel disk.
  • The Heart: He's the most open-hearted member of his team.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His dual falchions.
  • Hidden Depths: He's very bitter that his father has left him and his mother. In addition, while he usually has a cheerful showing, he has a more serious side. Finally, the reason he picked up the superhero gig in the first place is because he did not want to feel so useless.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He is one fourth of a spiritually aware human fused with four Hard Light dragons. Yuya is 3/4s Real Solid Vision, organic only by one fourth, his colouring comes from whatever Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon contributed in his DNA, and is the incarnation of Zarc's desire to be approved of everyone.
  • Jack of All Trades: He can use all three main summoning methods plus Pendulum, but he can't use the more specialized techniques like Rank-Up. He's better at combining different Extra deck monsters for combos.
  • Large Ham: "LADIES AAAAAND GENTLEMEN!"
  • Laser Blade: The edge of his falchions.
  • Le Parkour: Since he's an Entertainment duelists, he tends to be very acrobatic and flashy.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When he busts out the Xyz Monsters, you know he's dead serious. Special mention goes to Haou Akairyu - Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon.
  • MacGuffin: His pendulum pendant may or may not have magical traits. For Yuya, it's a Memento Macguffin from his father.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Not only does he use all three Extra Deck summoning methods (which in Standard is almost unheard of), he even has Pendulum monsters.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Downplayed, but since he's mostly made of Real Solid Vision, he can No-Sell most types of blunt force trauma. It's the sharp bits that become a problem.
  • No-Sell: He cannot be carded. And that's just scratching the surface.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You can tell the situation is dire when he drops the fun and games.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: His army of Odd-Eyes dragon monsters.
  • Pieces of God: You got to hand it to Zarc, he got very close to achieving godhood.
  • Playing with Fire: Not really obvious, but his deck has a lot of pyrotechnics going on. And then there is Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Just because he's a friendly guy doesn't mean he's not dangerous.
  • Red Is Heroic: Red mask, red duel disk, gloves, boots and other details in his clothes. And his dragons are also red. Hell, even his hair and eyes are red.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He'd very much rather there was no need to fight at all, and always goes for diplomacy first. Then entertainment. And if that doesn't work, then he gets serious.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Since he's the incarnation of Zarc's desire to please people, and fellows his dad's entertainment style, his deck and entire showing is like a circus. However, he also has a number of mysterious and brutal cards to show his underlying serious nature.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: Literally everyone who sees him and Yuzu assumes they're dating. They're not.
  • Signature Mon: Heavenly Dragon - Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Zarc's influence has caused him to develop one. In Yuya's case, it becomes a cold and calculated Tranquil Fury mode that focuses on shutting down the enemy and taking them out in the most efficient way possible.
  • Theme Naming: The "Yu" in his name.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Nobody takes a circus-themed deck seriously. And then he busts out the dragons.

    Hiiragi Yuzu / Music Lily
Deck: Melodious

Yuya's childhood friend. Her father is the principal of You Show Duel School.

  • Action Girl: She's a superhero. It's a given.
  • Barrier Maiden: More so than her counterparts, since she can teleport Zarc's fragments away from each other.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards the younger kids in her dad's dueling school, as well as Layra.
  • Black Magician Girl: A skilled magic user who regularly kicks ass.
  • Domino Mask: She wears a white one with flower decorations at the sides.
  • Flower Motifs: Both her clothes and monsters have a subtle flower theme. For instance, her bracelet has a flower design, and her extra deck monsters a flower theme.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hairdo. Which is also practical since that means her hair doesn't get in the way.
  • Girly Bruiser: An all pink and aggressive superheroine.
  • Green Thumb: She can control all the plants around her.
  • Hammerspace: Where in the world does she store that fan?
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: You'll be surprised at what she can do with plants.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: She runs an Anti-Fusion Fusion deck.
  • Le Parkour: She's an entertainment duelist, and experienced with Action Duels. Of course she's this trope.
  • Light 'em Up: She runs a LIGHT deck.
  • MacGuffin: Her bracelet, which is the source of her powers.
  • Made of Iron: She can take insane amounts of physical punishment, far beyond anything a normal human should be able to withstand. This includes falling from a skyscraper.
  • Meaningful Name: "Yuzu" is a general term for citrus fruits.
  • Paper Fan of Doom: That's her weapon. Seriously.
  • Pieces of God: She's a fragment of Rei, who had a hand in recreating reality.
  • Power Limiter: Primarily to Yuya, but she functions as this for all the other dragon boys as well.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has pink hair and is a very sweet and considerate person.
  • Rule of Symbolism:
    • She represents the flowers of the Kachou Fuugetsu principle. This is reflected in both her name and her extra deck monsters.
    • From an entertainer's aspect, she runs a music-themed deck.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: She doesn't date Yuya despite everyone thinking so.
  • Signature Mon: Bloom Diva the Melodious Saint.
  • Tangled Family Tree: She generally pretends not to know that she's related to the Akabas, but she's happy to have the other girls. While her dad also tries to ignore the Akaba bit, he makes a point of trying and dragging the other family members home for dinner as often as possible, including Syun.
  • Theme Naming: Her monsters are named after music terminology and famous composers.
  • Tsundere: She does not hesitate to dish out punishment with her fan.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her cards don't have much in terms of ATK or DEF, but they have some pretty troublesome effects.

    Gongenzaka Noboru / The Oni
Deck: Superheavy Samurai

Another childhood friend of Yuya and Yuzu, and the heir of the Gongenzaka Dojo.

  • Antiquated Linguistics: He uses some pretty old-fashioned honorifics.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: His costume is pretty much samurai clothes.
  • Badass Normal: No powers whatsoever.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He fights with his bare hands.
  • Barrier Warrior: His monsters can attack from Defense mode.
  • The Big Guy: Both incredibly strong and towering above everyone else, and his monsters are called "superheavy".
  • Code of Honour: He is a very loyal person who remains steadfast in his dueling style and does not abandon his friends and allies no matter what. However, he also believes in letting people fight their own battles.
  • Cool Mask: He wears an Oni mask.
  • Determinator: He will NOT back down.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: People started calling him "the Oni" because he's wearing an oni mask.
  • Made of Iron: Despite being a normal human, he can take huge physical punishment. Not quite at Yuzu's level though.
  • Martial Arts Headband: He's wearing a red one.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: He runs a monster-only deck. Justified because his monsters' effects can't activate if there are spells or traps in his graveyard.
  • Rule of Symbolism: While he's not an entertainer, his apparel refers to traditional Japanese theater.
  • Samurai: The aesthetic of both him and his deck. He also acts like one, dressed in a Yukata and traditional metal sandals.
  • Secret Identity: He's the only one who keeps a semblance to one, because he's wearing a proper mask that covers his whole face. That said, those who know him do recognise him because he doesn't change his mannerisms or deck.
  • Signature Mon: Superheavy Emperor - Susano-O.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": The Oni.

Xyz

The Resistance

    general
Tropes that apply to all or many the Xyz superheroes.
  • Anti-Hero: Most of them are very pragmatic in their approach and have no hesitation to resort to violence. Syun and Kaito in particular are exceptionally brutal.
  • Arc Words: Rebellion and Battlefield. One or both of these words appear in almost all their summoning chants.
  • Badass Family: The Kurosaki siblings.
  • Badass Normal: The striking majority of their members.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Comes with the genre.
  • Clothing Damage: Downplayed, but their clothes are worn and torn at various spots - mostly the edges - as a result of their fights.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: They follow a very dark clothing style, but they're good guys.
  • Combat Pragmatist: The point of the fight is to end it, after all.
  • Darker and Edgier: Compared to other superhero teams.
  • Determinator: Their claim to fame is that they'll continue fighting in the face of absolute hopelessness.
  • The Dreaded: Their reputation for brutality, along with their Determinator status and ominous imagery, has made them much more feared than the other teams despite not being that different on skill level.
  • Follow the Leader: They preach Sakaki Yusho's teachings, like literally everyone else who has met the man.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Nice guys don't do stuff like cause massive property damage and aggressively interrogate criminals.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: Apparently, a good number of duelists in the Spade and Clover duel schools have formed an army specifically for this task. The main group is actually averse to this idea.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Most of the not-so-famous duelists are skilled in their own right, but special mention goes to Kaito.
  • Irony: Despite claiming to follow Sakaki Yusho's ideals, they treat dueling as a tool for war and Serious Business. They justify this by saying they taint their dueling so nobody else has to.
  • Knight of Cerebus: In complete contrast to the bright, colourful and friendly Heartland, these guys are dark, cold and ominous - for the most part.
  • La Résistance: Subversion. They're called "The Resistance" but they don't seek to overthrow anyone yet (not that they won't help the Synchro guys when they ask).
  • Morality Kitchen Sink: They have everything from the All-Loving Hero to Nominal Hero, with most of them falling under Shades Of Grey.
  • Red Is Heroic / Scarf of Asskicking: They wear red scarves tied at various places to show their membership.
  • Theme Naming: The superhero names of the Original Six follow a "cycle of the day" theme.
  • Vigilante Man: They have this air about them.

The Original Six

    Ute / Midnight Phantom
Deck: Phantom Knights

The sort of leader and most iconic member of the Resistance. He and Ruri are the ones who started this whole thing.

  • Abnormal Ammo: Laser arrows.
  • Always Save the Girl: His primary concern is Ruri's well-being.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: The power of Zarc inside him means that if he ever flies off the handle, he is more than capable of destroying the world. Keyword being "if".
  • Back from the Dead: His deck's gimmick is this. Not to mention, it actually happened to Ute himself.
  • Badass Cape: Of the Black Cloak variety.
  • Bash Brothers: With Syun.
  • Battle Couple: With Ruri. They've been dating for a while.
  • Berserk Button: Humiliating his allies, and putting him in the same pod with Zarc.
  • Black Knight: Fits this trope to a T, and so does his deck.
  • Casting a Shadow: All his monsters are DARK attribute.
  • Cold Sniper / Friendly Sniper: Depends on whether you're his friend or enemy. And yes, he does have a sniper rifle as well as a bow.
  • Combo Platter Powers: The result of his being. Among other things - described in the other tropes - he can communicate with and summon Duel Monster spirits.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Shooting enemies from afar may not be the most honourable or glorious way to deal with them, but it's by far the most effective.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He has a death-themed deck and overall a really dark and eerie motif, but he's a hero.
  • Death-Activated Superpower: He discovered his powers as a fragment of Zarc in an incident where he was killed.
  • Death from Above: He's a sniper.
  • Domino Mask: A dark purple one, with a decorative zipper to the side. It doesn't hide his identity, but usually nobody spots him anyway.
  • Energy Bow: One of the many weapons in his arsenal.
  • Flash Step: Nobody's sure if that's another one of his powers, or just practice like Syun's. Maybe both.
  • Guns Akimbo: He has two handguns.
  • Hard Light: He can create Real Solid Vision constructs under his own power, no duel disk needed. Though it helps.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Most of his outfit.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He's one fourth of a spiritually aware human who physically fused with four Hard Light dragons. Ute is 3/4 Real Solid Vision, he shares his DNA with Zarc, his colouring comes from whatever Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon contributed in the material department, and is the incarnation of Zarc's Vengeance.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: His weapons - other than deck and duel disk - are a bow, a sniper riffle and two guns. And thanks to his Hard Light abilities, he can materialize them out of thin air.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: His powers help in that department.
  • Le Parkour: He's amazing at it.
  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: He wants to be an All-Loving Hero, but he's the incarnation of Zarc's Vengeance.
  • Love at First Sight: His reaction to meeting Ruri.
  • Mage Marksman:
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • As a duelist, he favours effects that activate from the graveyard, and spell/trap monsters.
    • As a superhero, he prefers fighting stealthily from a distance.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Downplayed and justified. He's 3/4ths Real Solid Vision, which is unaffected by anything not RSV, but the organic matter in his body is so well integrated with the rest that it's impossible to tell apart. As a result, while Ute can walk away from a building collapsing on him, he'll still get a paper cut.
  • No-Sell: He cannot be carded.
  • Not So Stoic: He can get pretty flustered and dorky around Ruri.
  • Only One Name: Since he has no family, he has no surname.
  • Perpetual Frowner
  • Pieces of God: Zarc made a pretty solid claim on the title.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Look the other tropes.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His clothes all have something purple on them.
  • Ray Gun: All three of them.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He really does not like fighting, but if he has to, he will fight and he's good at it.
  • Rule of Symbolism: He and his deck represent death, and his monsters Dark Rebellion and Dark Requiem represent the consequences of war.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Around his right arm.
  • Shock and Awe: He can summon lightning. Uncertain if that's Dark Rebellion or Ute himself.
  • Signature Mon: Heavenly Dragon - Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon.
  • Stealth Expert: Aided by his costumd; it may be really fancy, but it's also really dark and blends with the shadows easily.
  • The Stoic: Most of the time, his only expression is a slight frown.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Zarc's influence has caused him to develop the infamous "Bersek Mode".
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: He also has a bow.
  • Theme Naming: Other than the superhero handles, he also shares the phonetic "Yu" sith his dimensional counterparts.
  • Tranquil Fury: Most of the time.
  • Tron Lines: Downplayed: His shirt has them, but they don't actually glow. His weapons are more proper examples.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When he snaps, he loses sight of everything else and focuses only on destroying his enemies in the most brutal way possible.

    Kurosaki Ruri / Dawn Valkyrie
Deck: Lyrical Luscinia

The other founder of the Resistance, and Yuto's girlfriend.

  • Action Girl: Duh.
  • All-Loving Hero: She thinks that duels are to spread fun and smiles, and that everyone should get a chance at redemption. But that doesn't mean she won't fight if she has to.
  • Animal Motifs: Birds.
  • Barrier Maiden: She exists to stop Zarc from reviving.
  • Battle Couple: With Ute.
  • The Beastmaster: She can summon all the birds present in any given area to do her bidding.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: She keeps her jewelry even in the middle of a gunfight. Justified though; her bracelet is the source of her powers, her fancy hair clip actually necessary (how else to deal with such long hair?), the pendant a Memento Macguffin, and the feather earrings don't get in the way.
  • Blow You Away: She runs a WIND deck.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She's actually surprisingly ruthless when she gets down to it.
  • Dance Battler: She refers to her monsters' fighting as "dancing", and she herself is quite artistic as a fighter.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts:
    • Her deck's play-style is to have her low ATK monsters attack directly again and again and again.
    • Also what happens when she sends her army of actual birds to start pecking.
  • Domino Mask: One made of fake black feathers decorated with yellow gems.
  • Feather Motif: All her accessories. All of them.
  • Feathered Fiend: If she wants to, she can make even the cutest of birds vicious killers.
  • For Happiness: Her motive and ultimate purpose.
  • The Heart: She has to reign in both her boyfriend and her brother.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her rapier.
  • Hidden Depths: She despises being underestimated and controlled by her brother. Part of the reason she became a superhero is so she wouldn't have to hide in her brother's shadow anymore.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Not actually black magic, but she's elegant and she has a lot of firepower.
  • MacGuffin: Her bracelet, which also serves as the source of her powers.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "Ruri" means lapis lazuli.
    • Her Ace Monster, Assembly Nightingale, is named after Florence Nightingale, a famous WWI nurse.
  • Memento Macguffin: She has a pendant with one half of the Raid Raptors insignia. Her brother has the other half.
  • Modesty Shorts: Well, not shorts, but she's wearing the bottom of her School Sport Uniform.
  • Nice Girl:
  • No-Sell: She can deflect anything.
  • Pieces of God: Of Akaba Rei, who defeated Zarc and broke the universe.
  • Power Limiter: To Ute. Her bracelet was created specifically to counter him.
  • Royal Rapier: To reflect her elegant image.
  • Rule of Symbolism:
    • She represents the ascension of honourable warriors to heaven.
    • She also represents the birds of the Kachou Fuugetsu aesthetics principle.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Tied in one of her belts.
  • Shared Family Quirks: She and Syun both run Winged Beast decks with low ATK, both use swords, both count down their attacks, and both point both their fingers when declaring one.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Graceful, polite, beautiful and incredibly resilient.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Look above. For her part, she's happy to have three sisters to talk to and is very protective of Layra.
  • Theme Naming: She and her monsters are named after jewels.
  • Too Many Belts: At least six of them.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her monsters have ridiculously low ATK points, but she has mastered the art of Death of a Thousand Cuts.
  • Winged Humanoid: She can sprout wings if she wants to.
  • Zerg Rush: Her modus operandi.

    Kurosaki Syun / Dusk Phoenix
Deck: Raid Raptors

Ruri's big brother and Yuto's best friend. Originally not a part of the team, but once he found out he was quick to rectify that.

  • Animal Motifs: Birds, like his sister.
  • Badass Longcoat: A dark purple trenchcoat that reaches his ankles.
  • Badass Normal: Doesn't have any powers, but can kick ass with the best of them.
  • Bash Brothers: With Ute. He also teams up with Kaito on occasion, and later with Crow.
  • Berserk Button: Do NOT hurt the people he cares about - ESPECIALLY his sister Ruri.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Having learned his lesson with Ruri, he's much less overbearing with Layra but not less protective.
  • Blow You Away: His monsters are known for creating massive gusts of wind.
  • Casting a Shadow: Raid Raptors are DARK attribute.
  • Character Tics: When he declares an attack, he points two fingers at the opponent in a move that resembles a karate-chop.
  • A Darker Shade of Grey: He's on the more ruthless side, willing to crush down his enemies regardless of what it takes.
  • Death from Above: Comes with his deck. Carpet bombing, killer sat, you name it.
  • Feathered Fiend: His deck is exclusively made of this.
  • Flash Step: He taught himself how to do it, and thanks to it he's still alive.
  • Friend to All Children: Though you wouldn't know by looking at him.
  • Glass Cannon: Overall, Syun packs immense fire-power and speed, but he has low stamina and is unable to take many hits. This goes for both him and his deck.
  • Had to Be Sharp: OK, technically he didn't have to join Ute and Ruri, but to keep up with them he hadto get better.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His katana.
  • Hidden Depths: He loves children and has no problem with his best friend dating his sister.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His weapon of choice. His has some red energy thing going on.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Part of the reason Ruri secretly resents him.
  • Le Parkour: He's even better than Ute, able to survive incredible falls.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: How he joined the team. Let's just say that there was a skyscraper involved, and way too many broken windows.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: At first, Ute and Ruri kept their superhero gig a secret from him. He had to spot them on TV to find out what's going on.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name means "falcon", which reflects his deck.
  • Memento Macguffin: He has one half of a pendant with the Raid Raptors symbol.
  • Memetic Badass: In-Universe, he has a reputation akin to Batman.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Averted. He actually has no problem with Ute dating his sister.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: He plays Raid Raptors.
  • One-Man Army: His deck is designed to take multiple opponents at once. He can do the same with his fists.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His falcons are in turn: a guidable flame missile, an array of laser guns, a CARPET BOMBER, a satellite laser cannon, and a Black hole creator. How the hell is anything capable of remaining intact after his duels!?
  • Purple Is Powerful: His trench coat.
  • Rule of Symbolism: His Extra Deck monsters represent the stages of rebellion, from the beginning to the end.
  • Shared Family Quirks: See Ruri above.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Him being Ruri's brother means he's indirectly related to the mess that is the Akaba family. He's not happy about this and prefers to avoid that train of thought as much as possible. However, he's very protective of little Layra and treats her like a kid sister that must be protected at all costs.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His Xyz monsters have low ATK but devastating effects designed to OTK multiple opponents at once.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: STAIRS

    Kaito Tenjou / Star Hunter
Deck: Cipher, Photon

At first glance, he's just a talented duelist of the Clover branch. But his past holds many mysteries... He now leads the Clover half of the Original Six.

  • The Ace: Regarded as this by everyone who knows him.
  • Applied Phlebotinum: Whatever is going on with him, it's not the Real Solid Vision that the others are using.
  • The Atoner: He did something very bad in the past that he feels very guilty about.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Famous among the Clover branch duelists for this.
  • Badass Bookworm: He's very good at robotics.
  • Bag of Holding: Some of his cards can transform into melee weapons.
  • Bash Brothers: He teams up with Syun on occasion.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards his brother Haruto and the younger members of the Resistance.
  • Cast from Hit Points: His Photon Mode takes a huge toll on his body.
  • Catchphrase: "Are you ready to repent!?"
  • Composite Character: He's pretty much the Arc-V version of the character, but with the Zexal background.
  • Connected All Along: He somehow knows Allen's older sister.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He carved out the names of all his cards so he can read them just in case he ever has to duel blind.
  • Crippling Overspecialization:
    • The reason he switched to the Cipher archetype. His original Photon deck was designed to face Numbers, which are overpowered Xyz monsters that are invulnerable in battle. Not only is this deck too powerful for casual dueling, it obliges him to use Photon Mode (which is damaging), and it's useless for facing decks that do not rely on Xyz.
    • His powers are also designed to tackle Numbers users.
  • A Darker Shade of Grey: To the point of being regarded as a Nominal Hero by some people. His background does not help.
  • Dented Iron: He's almost gone blind due to abusing Photon Mode and at his worst he needs a cane to get around in unfamiliar areas. Also, a good chunk of his organs don't operate properly. Fortunately, the others push him to actually go to the hospital for his problems and take care of himself, so he's slowly recovering. It's unknown if he'll ever be back 100% though.
  • Determinator: Despite all his problems, he still fights on as a superhero.
  • The Dreaded: There were more than just a few people terrified to find out that he's back in the game.
  • Duels Decide Everything: Enforced. He typically forces people to duel because that's how he's used to dealing with problems and he causes less injuries that way.
  • Facial Markings: When in Photon Mode, his left eye is surrounded by a blue tattoo.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: In his backstory, he was trying to catch all 100 Numbers.
  • Guns For Hire: What he used to do for a living.
  • Handicapped Badass: Due to the incredible toll of Photon Mode in his body, he can never truly go all out. He's also more feared than the Apocalypse Maiden and the Person of Mass Destruction.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: His bond with his brother Haruto created some of the best cards in his arsenal. Some of them even transform into weapons!
  • Hidden Depths: He's much friendlier than he looks and everything he does is for the sake of his family. He also really likes robotics, and out of battle he has a tendency for flashy duels.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: He's not part of the main trio but he's the best of them all.
  • Improbable Age: He's not even an adult yet.
  • Light 'em Up: Both his decks are LIGHT attribute. And of course he there is Photon Mode.
  • The Mentor: He acts as this to the other members of the Resistance, but most prominently Sayaka and Allen.
  • Mysterious Past / Noodle Incident: Literally everything that happened to him involving the Numbers. Only Allen's sister seems to have any real clue, and both of them refuse to divulge any details.
  • Red Baron: He's still known as the Numbers Hunter in some circles.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When in Photon Mode, his left eye turns red.
  • Red Right Hand: White, actually. His Photon Hand allows him to steal souls. Good thing it's not seeing any use as of late.
  • Robot Buddy: Orbital 7. Kaito first built him as Haruto's babysitter, but ended up adding combat features during his Numbers hunting days.
  • Rule of Symbolism: He's pretty much a throwback and reference to the origins and properties of Xyz summoning. Also, his light/sky-themed deck and his catchphrase invoke divine judgment.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He ties it around his right hand where his glove used to be.
  • Signature Mon: His Galaxy-Eyes cards.
  • The Stoic: When on the job, very much so.
  • Time Stands Still: Orbital 7's Signature Move is to slow down time to a ridiculous degree.
  • Walking Armory: Downplayed. His three Photon Galaxy-Eyes are sealed in the form of weapons, which are in turn sealed in cards, so he pretty much just puts them in his deck (said weapons are a Battle Boomerang, a massive spear and a Cool Sword). He also has his Duel Anchor, but that's store in a bracelet he wears.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: One of his abilities. He never uses it.

    Sayaka Sasayama / Sunlight Pixie
Deck: Fairy

A student of the Clover Branch of Heartland Duel School. She's close friends with Ruri.

    Allen Kozuki / High-noon Cowboy
Deck: Railroad

Another student of the Clover branch, and close friends with Sayaka. He has an older sister named Anna.

Other important Xyz characters

    Anna Kozuki
Deck: Railway

Allen's older sister. She knows Kaito from somewhere.

  • Badass Normal: Again, no powers.
  • Big Brother Instinct: She had no such tendencies prior to Allen joining the Resistance, but upon seeing him hang around his Kaito and other shady people, she decided to keep an eye on him just to be on the safe side.
  • BFG: She has flying pink canon.
  • The Big Guy: She has a CANON. What more needs to be said?
  • Confusion Fu: Her highly unusual deck results in catching her opponents completely off guard.
  • Connected All Along: She knows Kaito from his Numbers Hunter days.
  • Dynamic Entry: Again, flying canon. Which she can ride.
  • Girly Bruiser: No other reason why the canon is pink.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Unlike Allen, who spams LV 4 monsters like everyone else, Anna's deck focuses on summoning extremely high level monsters with just as much power, and very heavy costs.
  • Mysterious Past: She is traumatized by something, and Kaito was somehow involved in it, but they both refuse to explain. The only thing Allen knows is that his sister was going missing some days at a time.
  • Refusal of the Call: She refuses to join the Resistance claiming that "she's been in enough trouble already".
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: She hides it very well, but whatever happened to her was very traumatic.
  • The Watcher: She refuses to be an active participant but keeps an eye out just in case something happens to Allen.

Synchro

    General
  • Ascended Fanboy: The squad was created by drawing inspiration from Team Satisfaction, who cleaned up the gangs in the Commons area a few years prior.
  • Badass Biker: ALL OF THEM.
  • Bomb Throwing Anarchist: Occasionally with actual bombs. Justified, given how corrupt the state is.
  • Dude Where Is My Respect: The fact that they're fighting both against the police and against the more extreme Commons has made them extremely polarising figures.
  • Full-Circle Revolution: They are working specifically towards preventing such a thing.
  • Might Makes Right: Due to the Synchro Dimension's strong belief in this trope, loosing is not an option.
  • Vigilante Man: Every single one of them was persecuted by the Security and the City state anyway, so why not act like a criminal.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: How many Commons view them.

Winds of Change

    Hugo / Wind Rider
Deck: Speedroid

An orphaned boy from the commons area with a LOT of power to spare. Hot-headed and excitable.

  • Always Save the Girl: His primary concern is Rin.

  • Badass Biker: Renowned for his expert driving skills and good stunt work despite being younger than most riders.
  • Berserk Button: Getting his name wrong. And of course, social justice.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His signature weapons are a pair of bladed tonfas on each arm.

  • Combo Platter Powers: Other than the tropes here, he can communicate and summon Duel Monster Spirits.
  • Dynamic Entry: That's what you get when you combine motorcycles with over-excitement.
  • Domino Mask: A neon blue one with a nice pattern. The glow helps hide his face from the cameras.
  • Dual Wielding: He uses two bladed tonfas.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He's brilliant with tech. To drive the point home, he doesn't just randomly materialize his duel runner; he has to memorize every single mechanism and screw and material that makes the thing, and instantly recall them every single time.
  • Hammerspace: He can materialize his Duel Runner out of thin air. Needless to say nobody expects THAT.
  • Hard Light: He can summon monsters and equipment for real. Including a duel runner.
  • Hidden Depths: Hugo is surprisingly skilled at all scientific areas and foreign languages, and he's a brilliant duelist. Also, the reason he started being a superhero is because he felt helpless against the system.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very reckless and easy to anger.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Like the other Dragon Boys, he's 3/4s Hard Light and only 1/4th organic, he is spiritually aware, some of his genetic material comes from his dragon, and he's the incarnation of Zarc's Ambition.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: They have the shade of an iceberg or a crystal. While Hugo is a very friendly guy, his glares are creepy.
  • Laser Blade: His gauntlets have them.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Like the others, he can take pretty much anything and come out unscathed. He still has a problem with sharp projects.
  • No-Sell: He cannot be carded.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When he gets dead serious, run.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The two semi-transparent "coattails" hanging from his belt are meant to resemble wings.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He has a light blue scarf tied around his right wrist - it reaches his ankles when he leave his arm hanging.

  • Superpowered Evil Side: Due to Zarc's influence, he has developed the infamous "Berserk Mode".
  • Theme Naming: His name also has the kanji for "Yu".
  • Tron Lines: His riding costume is covered with them. Light blue ones.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Most people don't take him seriously when they see his childish attitude and toy-themed deck. Oh how wrong they are...
  • Weaponized Teleportation: Famous for this, much to the chagrin of those trying to capture him.

    Rin / White Witch
Deck: Wind Witch

Hugo's Childhood Friend and the girl he has a crush one. For the most part she keeps him on the straight and narrow.

  • Action Girl: She's a Badass Biker superhero rebel.
  • An Ice Person: Her deck is winter themed, and Rin can freeze everything she touches.
  • Armed Legs: The protective parts of her riding suit double as this.
  • Barrier Maiden: She exists to prevent Zarc's revival.
  • Blow You Away: She runs a WIND deck, and can control wind as she pleases.
  • Boyish Short Hair: It's convenient.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She believes in grabbing every possible chance, no matter what, and doing anything to win.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Her deck focuses in burn damage.
  • The Dreaded: While it's Hugo who has the most raw power, it's her who makes the enemies truly tremble with the threat of being frozen alive.
  • Kick Chick: Her fighting style is mostly this. Thanks to the protective part of her riding suit, she can make it hurt more too.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Considering her magic is mostly ice based...
  • MacGuffin: Her bracelet, which is the source of her powers.
  • Made of Iron: Given how she can walk away from Hot Pursuit crashes...
  • Meaningful Name: Rin means "cold".
  • One-Way Visor: She uses her helmet to obscure her faces, and its visor features this trope.
  • Pieces of God: A fragment of Akaba Rei, who was absurdly powerful.
  • Power Limiter: She's supposed to be this for Hugo, but she's actually failing for the most part; Hugo has grown absurdly powerful.
  • Rule of Symbolism: She represent the wind in the Kachou Fuugetsu aesthetics principle.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: She's not dating Hugo despite of his obvious crush on her.
  • Signature Mon: Wind Witch - Winter Bell.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's very sweet with her friends - Tsundere moments not withstanding - but when dealing with her enemies she's a true Ice Queen.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Rin considers herself an orphan, but will use the surname "Akaba" if she has to. She also thinks of the other girls more as her friends than her sisters, and can't quite form an opinion on Syun and Shuzo.
  • Theme Naming: Her monsters are all wind and winter themed.
  • Tomboy: Short hair, badass rider, skilled mechanic, and regularly kicks Corrupt Cop ass.
  • Tron Lines: Her riding suit has pink ones.

  • Wrench Wench: A skilled mechanic who helped Hugo design his D-Wheel.

    Crow Hogan / Black Thunder
Deck: Black Feather

A former member of Team Satisfaction. He had a lot of reservations about rejoining the world of superheroics.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards all those little kids he adopts. That's also the main reason why he refuses to come out of retirement.
  • Casting a Shadow: His Black Feather monsters are DARK attribute.
  • The Chosen Many: He's one of the Signers - more specifically, the Tail.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Even now it's uncertain exactly what the mark enables him to do. The only thing that's for sure is that he can use it to track powerful people, can create barriers, and substitute as a power source.
  • Cool Bike: It can FLY. It doesn't get cooler than that.
  • The Dreaded: It takes people a few moments to recognize him, but once they do...
  • Emissary from the Divine: He's connected to the Crimson Dragon.
  • Famed In-Story: Black Thunder was a famous vigilante.
  • Feathered Fiend: His deck is made up entirely of these.
  • Fiery Redhead: He has red hair and can get worked up over the simplest things.
  • Hero of Another Story: He was a member of Team Satisfaction back in the day.
  • Hidden Depths: Secretly, he's terrified of losing what little life and comfort he managed to provide for himself and his adopted children. He's also afraid that the Winds of Change will meet the same fate as Team Satisfaction.

  • My Greatest Failure: Whatever happened that put an end to Team Satisfaction weighs heavily on him.
  • Not So Above It All: He can be quite childish at times.
  • One-Way Visor: His helmet has this, helping him hide his face.

  • Punny Name: His name is "crow" and he runs Black Feathers.
  • Red Baron: His alias "Black Thunder" is spoken with fear among certain circles.
  • Refusal of the Call: At first he did not want to come out of retirement at all.
  • Resigned to the Call: Eventually he was forced to accept that there's no escaping this life - especially not when he found out that there's a new Signer, and she's a little girl.
  • Secret Identity: He maintained one back in the day, and still does. That's also the main reason why he avoids the cameras as much as possible; he doesn't want to get recognized by his acquaintances.
  • Signature Mon: When he duels in public, his ace is Assault Black Feather - Raikiri the Rain Shower. But as a superhero, his ace is Signers' Requiem - Black Feather Storm Dragon.
  • Theme Naming: His monsters follow a weapon and weather theme.
  • Tron Lines: His face is covered in criminal markers, and his superhero suit follows the same aesthetic, but in red.
  • Vigilante Man: He helped clean up most of the gangs in the Commons area.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Jack Atlas. Crow is very resentful that Jack became duel king because that's playing right in the hands of the system.

The Commons Revolution

    general
Tropes associated with the entire movement.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: There's an ever-increasing tendency among their numbers to turn against anyone who doesn't fully side with them, as they assume they are working with the Tops.
  • Full-Circle Revolution: What they are truly aiming for, though it's unclear if they realise it, or realise it's a bad thing.
  • Hypocrite: They claim they want the system to change, but in reality they'd like themselves on top.

    Shinji Weber
Deck: Bee Force

The unofficial leader of the Commons Revolution, and one of Crows closest friends.

Team Satisfaction

    general
Tropes associated with the entire team.
  • Badass Crew: Each of them was an incredibly skilled duelist.
  • Base-Breaking Character: In-Universe, people's opinions of them tend to greatly vary because they would fight against corruption, which included all social classes.
  • The Chosen Many: Four out of five members were chosen by the Crimson Dragon. Needless to say, the fifth didn't take that well...
  • Duels Decide Everything: Enforced. They used to use Duel Anchors to force their opponents to duel, and the loser would get their disk destroyed.
  • Famed In-Story: They are legendary for destroying all of the Common's gangs single-handed. Even though there are now new ones, none of them dare step out of line in fear of something like that happening again.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Something happened in the past that made everyone go their separate ways and not talk to each other again.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Among the five members, Aki was the only woman.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The fates of some of their members are unknown.

A member of the Team from the Tops.

    Allies of Justice
  • Casting a Shadow: Their decks are dark-attribute.
  • Defector from Decadence: Most of them are former police officers.
  • Running Gag: They have no real bearing to the plot, simply appearing during important events in the city as a somewhat more organised gang. Other vigilantes often joke about them being the "retired cops in the stolen van".
  • Signature Mon: As their name implies, they run Allies of Justice decks.
  • Van in Black: Their signature vehicle.

Fusion

    Joeri / Rafflesia
Deck: Predator Plants

    Selena /

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Her preffered fighting style are her bare fists, though she enhances them with her abilities.
  • Barrier Maiden: She exists to prevent Zarc's revival, though how achievable that is with Joeri is debatable.

  • Blood Knight: She will jump into a fight any chance she gets.
  • Casting a Shadow: Her monsters are DARK attribute.
  • Code of Honour:
  • Lunacy: She can induce madness on other people with her bracelet. In addition, her powers and deck are moon-themed.
