A series of under-construction fantasy novels by Sam U. Mansed with over-arching themes of Earn Your Happy Ending, Light Is Not Good (and Dark Is Not Evil), and rather Anviliciously, War Is Hell. "Project Krieg" is a placeholder title until I come up with a better one.
As of moment, there is currently a trilogy planned, though that probably won't stick.
- Conquest
- To War With A Shadow
- [Title]
Note: As this is the page where the author's going to be doing most of his brainstorming, things are subject to change without notice.
This series will provide examples of:
- A Million Is a Statistic Soldiers have been dying in great numbers for so long, it's become a fact of life.
- A Wizard Did It Magic can create Mithril, Elves proficient in its uses are resistant to disease, live longer lives, can shoot lightning from their fingertips, and create smoke or fire with alchemy.
- Deconstruction Of fantasy tropes and war.
- During the War Centric to the plot of Conquest, the War has gone on for so long that the economies of the warring nations have become centered around it.
- Fantastic Racism Peace talks have been largely fruitless in part because both sides have been demonizing each other since before the people in charge were even born.
- Grey-and-Gray Morality There is no "right" side of the war.
- I Have Many Names The War. The Endless War. The War Of Generations. The Righteous Battle. Etc.
- Line-of-Sight Name Oma, after being called a One Man Army.
- The Masquerade Magic is Industrial Revolution-era technology.
- Never Speak Ill of the Dead Inverted. A white-washed version of a person's life implies that the individual's real story is not worth telling.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero In a "no-win situation" sort of way. Because the war ended so suddenly after several generations of going on, both countries' economies are thrown into panic, and the returning soldiers have no place.
- Our Elves Are Different Our elves are a race of fair-skinned, long-lived, hidden people with Mithril and Magic.
- Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism Comet starts the story so far on the idealistic end, he could be used as a counterweight. The events of Conquest, and subsequent Time Skip, catapult him over to the other side, before he finally settles somewhere in the middle.
- So What Do We Do Now? Most of the soldiers of the war have no idea what to do with themselves once it ends. Many of them default to banditry, leaving Comet to try to fix what he broke.
- The Un-Twist Magic is TECHNOLOGY!
- What Measure Is a Mook? The death of soldiers is considered non-disturbing.
- What Measure Is a Non-Human? Both sides tend to consider the other to be sub-human.
