Samantha Mathis (born May 12, 1970) is an American actress and trade union leader of Austrian descent born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York.
She serves as vice president of SAG-AFTRA. She is best known for The American President, FernGully: The Last Rainforest, and Broken Arrow.
Her parents are the late Austrian actress Bibi Besch and the late Donald Mathis. She was the girlfriend of actor River Phoenix, she was with him the night he died from a drug overdose on October 31, 1993.
