Tropes for the film:

  • Death by Childbirth: Jack's wife, Sarah, dies in childbirth, leaving him to raise their daughter alone.
  • Improvised Diaper: Newly-widowed single dad Jack wraps his newborn daughter in a towel and puts her in a big envelope for lack of a diaper.
  • Lamaze Class: Jack goes to a Lamaze class with his pregnant wife Sarah, and pretends, hammily, that he has himself suddenly gone into labor in the middle of the class.
  • Marry the Nanny: The eponymous Jack is a successful lawyer who suddenly becomes a widow thanks to Death by Childbirth. Enters the picture a bubbly, hip American expat who becomes the nanny. After a rocky start (due to their age gap, socioeconomic status, and cultural differences), sparks fly.
  • Sink or Swim Fatherhood: It's played this way when Jack's wife, Sarah, dies in childbirth, leaving him to raise their baby alone. Between the shock of his wife's death and the fact he doesn't have her around to help, he's totally lost and ends up doing things such as putting the baby in a large envelope for want of nappies.
