Roy Mitchell Kinnear, (8 January 1934 — 20 September 1988), was a British character actor best known for playing sweaty, nervous, bumbling men in various films and TV series.

After enrolling in RADA, he joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, and early in his career, he appeared in the film Sparrows Can't Sing.

He quickly began to appear in many films and TV shows and starred in Cowboys, a sitcom about builders. He made many films with Richard Lester, a director and his close friend. These include The Bed Sitting Room, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Help!, How I Won the War, Juggernaut (1974), and The Three Musketeers (1973).

From 1968 to 1970, he starred in Inside George Webley alongside Patsy Rowlands, while in the latter year, he also appeared in his most iconic role to American audiences, when he was cast in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory as the father of Golden Ticket winner Veruca Salt.

He began doing voiceover work in the late '70s, from voicing Pipkin in Watership Down, to providing narration in Bertha. He also appeared in two music videos for Mike + the Mechanics.

He was given a few starring roles in No Appointment Necessary (1977), Cowboys, and the Black Comedy Hardwicke House, where he played school headmaster R.G. Wickham. Kinnear was very enthusiastic about the series and was devastated when it was cancelled after its first two episodes were transmitted.

During the filming of The Return of the Musketeers, he fell from a horse while filming a scene. He was taken to a hospital but died the next day at the age of 54 of a heart attack brought on by his accident.

He was the father of fellow actor Rory Kinnear.
