Blakey may 'ate 'im, but we think he's amazing.

"Whatever I did after On the Buses, nobody wanted to know about it. But I can't knock the programme because it brought me offers to do concert tours in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada."

Reg Varney, born Reginald Alfred Varney, (11 July 1916 — 16 November 2008), was a British actor best known for playing Stan Butler in On the Buses.

After World War II, he starred on stage in Gaytime with Benny Hill in a double act before becoming an all-round entertainer in the music halls. He didn't make many screen appearances until he was cast as factory foreman Reg Turner in The Rag Trade. Soon afterwards, he starred in The Valiant Varneys wherein he played multiple characters. After that came Beggar My Neighbour, alongside Pat Coombs, June Whitfield, and Peter Jones.

His best-known role came in 1969 in On the Buses as Stan. Varney played the role in the entirety of the first six series and the three spin-off films, but left the show halfway through Series 7 in an attempt move on to films, however he only made one non-Buses related film, The Best Pair of Legs in the Business. He also starred in Down the 'Gate, which wasn't a success.

Varney was the first person in the world to use an ATM: on 27 June 1967, for publicity purposes he was photographed making a withdrawal from the newly-installed machine at the Enfield Town branch of Barclay's Bank.

He died of a chest infection at the age of 92.
