Holts

Member of the Holt bloodline
    Whip Holt
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Whip Holt has this trope in the novels he is in post-wagon train. However, his bad arthritis hinders him to do so.
  • Mountain Man: Whip's profession before he became a wagonmaster.
  • Sworn Brothers: Stalking Horse, a Cherokee, is blood brothers with Whip.
  • Weapon Specialization: "Whip" got his name thru his expert use of whips.

    Toby Holt
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Toby Holt definitely fits this trope.
  • Has a Type: When in one of the later novels his wife Alexandra (who was occasionally implied to be one as well) said they will not count the redheads he has gone for, Toby happily replies that there were too many to count. At least 2 of his main love interests were redheads, and possibly a third if Alexandra counts as one.
  • Last Wish Marriage: the circumstances that led to Toby's first marriage, althro the bride actually survived, causing issues after Toby came back from the war.
  • The Patriarch: Toby very much became one in the follow up series The Holts, as he advised and criticized his children as they went to their adult professions as he felt needed.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Toby often does things just because his country needs him.
  • Spin-Offspring: Toby becomes the main character of the series starting with Washington until the end of the original series. He is the patriarch in the follow up series.
  • Weapon Specialization: In his earliest appearances Toby was set up to be one with knives, but it eventually became a dropped idea.

    Cindy Holt Kerr Blake

    Tim Holt
  • Ancestral Name: Tim Holt is named for the first Holt that immigrated to America,
  • Spin-Offspring: The follow up series The Holts puts the focus more on him and his siblings

    Janessa Holt
  • Continuity Snarl: Janessa was said to be born in 1861. However, due to her father having not yet left on the wagon train until after the start of the Civil War (April 1861) in Nevada!, there is simply not enough time for him to travel all the way to the other side of the country, get reassigned to another theatre in war, and then get Janessa's mother pregnant in time for Janessa to be born in 1861.
  • Healing Herb: Janessa was trained in using herbs to heal by her Cherokee mother. As she learned white men's medicine she slowly lost the knowledge, but regained some of it while visiting the Cherokee reservation in Carolina Courage.
  • Spin-Offspring: The follow up series The Holts puts the focus more on her and her siblings

    Mike Holt
  • Ancestral Name: Mike Holt is named for his grandfather Michael "Whip" Holt.

Blakes

    Leland "Lee" Blake

    Henry Blake
  • Continuity Snarl: Henry in Utah began four years of West Point in the fall of 1868, yet had graduated in time to serve in Paris as a 2nd Lieutenant for the end of the Franco-Prussian war in the spring of 1871...less than 3 years later.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: in Pacific Destiny, Henry is posing as a Spaniard in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Being amazed at a sight he inadvertently says his surprise in English, making a local policeman take notice and demand his papers...a Chase Scene begins.
  • Happily Adopted: Hank Purcell becomes Henry Blake.

    Peter Blake
  • Ancestral Name: Peter Blake is named for Henry's biological father, with his middle name Heinrich being the German form of his father's name, which Peter's German baroness mother preferred calling Henry.

Others

    Eulalia Woodling Holt Blake
  • Rape Portrayed as Redemption: In Nebraska! Eulalia Woodling had a major personality change for the good after being used as a sex slave by Indians for months.
  • Southern Belle: She was introduced into the series as a Mauvaise Belle.
  • Stepping Out to React: When Harvard-educated Paul is repeatedly being corrected by Lisolette in Oregon!, it gets to the point where Eulalia has to leave the room just so she can laugh about it.

    Alexandra "Alex" Woodling Holt
  • Kissing Cousins: It issaid that Toby and Alexandra are first cousins thrice removed, but considering the known relatives and the age of Alex's father it is likely the author meant third cousins. The only problem anyone has with the relationship is the age difference.
  • Southern Belle: Definitely of the Bonne Belle variety
