Protagonists
Sumire Takahana
Voiced by: Minori Chihara (Japanese), Natalie Arneson (English)
- Action Girl: Especially in the manga, where she learns to become a competent gun user. Her Berserker form is more hands-on.
- Ambiguously Bi: She's extremely close to Lucia, to the point where the English translation is sold as a yuri manga, however she also has a male love interest.
- Cooldown Hug: Implied to have been successfully given one at the end of the anime.
- Enemy Within: Her Berserker form. She learns to control it within a few chapters of the manga, however not in the anime.
- Exotic Eye Designs: She gains cross-shaped eyes in Berserker form.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: She's initially against the whole "Virus hunting" deal.
- Meaningful Name: Sumire Takahana keeps flowers around to lend cheer to Lucia's environment. For those non-Japanese speakers, hana means "flower." The name Sumire is also Japanese for "violet".
- Mistaken for Gay: Presuming she isn't actually bisexual. Riku and Nene mistake her for dating Lucia.
- Ordinary High-School Student: Or really, junior high student. She starts out as one before getting poked by a brooch, though she could always see Viruses to an extent.
- Psycho Lesbian: Her Berserker form initially behaved like one in the manga. In the anime, Sumire never took control of it and thus it always acts like this.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: In her Berserker form, her normally green eyes turn as red as her hair.
- School Uniforms are the New Black: In contrast to the other protagonists, she usually wears her school uniform no matter what.
- Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Sumire is the protagonist.
Lucia Nahashi
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Japanese), Joanne Bonasso (English)
- Action Girl: Lucia does most of the gun-related fighting.
- All of the Other Reindeer: She was teased and ostracized when she was younger due to her unusual left eye.
- Cigarette of Anxiety: She apparently smokes for these reasons.
- Cooldown Hug: Inverted. In volume 2 of the manga, Sumire finds Lucia crying on the floor. Lucia herself initiates the hug.
- Girlish Pigtails: To go along with her gothic lolita style, plus they also emphasise her youth despite her mature demeanor. Lucia has worn pigtails since childhood, though occasionally she's depicted outside with her hair down.
- The Gunslinger: She doesn't use normal bullets though.
- Happily Adopted: She was taken in by Nahashi at a young age.
- Inhuman Eye Concealers: Her eyepatch isn't just for show nor is she blind in the eye it covers. She wears an eyepatch to hide her superpowered golden eye.
- Magical Eye: Her left eye is a supernatural eye she inherited from her father.
- Meaningful Name: Lucia's name means "light".
- No Smoking: The fact that Lucia smokes was dropped in the anime due to Japan's rules against showing underage smoking on television.
- Revolvers Are Just Better: Her preferred type of gun is the revolver,
- Smoking Is Cool: It makes Lucia look even cooler than she already is. She eventually kicks the habit.
- Younger Than They Look: She's only fifteen (sixteen in the anime) but looks more like she's eighteen-nineteen. Her smoking habit doesn't help.

- Elegant Gothic Lolita: Complete with a hat.
- Spell My Name With An S: The English dub of the anime translates her name as "Laura".
- Sweet Tooth: In the manga she eats a lot of Pocky. The anime changed this to chocolate.
- Token Mini-Moe: She's one of the youngest cast members and is cute looking.

Voiced by: Ayumi Tsuji (Japanese), Kim-Ly Nguyen (English)
- Adaptation Species Change: She's a normal human girl in the manga, but in the anime she's an Artificial Human
- Brother–Sister Incest: An implied sister/sister variant towards Lola. It's unrequited.
- Creepy Child: Her calm, emotionless demeanor is rather unnerving.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita: Much like her sister, Layla dresses this way.
- Emotionless Girl: In contrast with her more upbeat sister.
- Psycho Lesbian: She shows signs of this towards her twin sister. She really wants to "become one" with Lola.
- Sweet Tooth: Shares Lola's love of sweets. In the manga she favors Pocky, and in the anime it's konpeito.
- Token Mini-Moe: Subverted. She has the looks but, unlike her sister, she's creepy rather than cute.
