A page listing the characters of Undertown, including the protagonists in the Junkyard Gang, the Furmen, the Lizard Boys, and the Insect Insurgents.

    The Junkyard Gang

In General

The main characters of the story, consisting of Joey P.P., B.W., Broom, Sama, and Eddy. The Junkyard Gang are a group of friends (all of whom, save for Sama, are of a vaguely adult age) who have banded together in the craziness of Undertown's war. They have made a pledge to not rest until Sama has the Sugar Stone and is able to heal his dad with it.

  • The Quest: They vow not to stop until they find the sugar stone for the sake of Sama's father. Not everyone follows this vow.
  • True Companions: They're set-up in this way, but it's subverted in that some of them do keep secrets from each other, seem to have their own hidden motives for helping Sama, and one of them, Joey P.P., actually betrays the group.

Sama

"We won't be gone long. Just get the sugar stone and come right back. Promise."

The protagonist, a ten-year-old boy whose father is exasperated by his supposed immaturity. Blaming himself for his father's heart attack, Sama has resolved to stop at nothing to help him by using the Sugar Stone, although he seems to be fated for something even greater. Although childish and crying easily at home, he quickly finds himself having to shape up and be brave when surrounded by a host of terrifying insects and worse in Undertown. Entering Undertown has stained his face with tears for some reason.

  • Berserk Button: He freaks when The Cloud so much as mentions his dying father.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: He has a very hard time taking B.W.'s concerns about Raindrop seriously because of how cute she is, and how badly he wants her to be his girlfriend.
  • Facial Markings: The "tear stains" down his face, which only show up once he's in Undertown. Raindrop's cryptic comments indicate that they have a special meaning.
  • It's All My Fault: Believes he is the cause of his father's heart attack, since it came in the middle of his father chewing him out for playing with his medals.
  • Tears of Fear: It's a plot point that, before falling into Undertown, Sama cried a lot; his first fight with the insects has him taking on two of them while his eyes are filled with tears the whole time.

Eddie

Sama's teddy bear. Inanimate on the surface world, when Sama falls into Undertown he becomes a walking, talking bear, and quickly reveals that he originated from Undertown like this in the first place. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember jack squat about his past and is struggling to remember, eventually seeking the Teddy Bear Bell to help himself with this.

  • Heroic BSoD: After ringing the bell, Eddie instantly regrets it once all of his memories of the horrific Teddy Bear Exodus return.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: His main problem. Something terrible happened to cause all the teddy bears to leave Undertown, but a spell makes pretty much everyone in it forget what it was. He gets his memories back after ringing the Teddy Bear Bell, to his horror.
  • MacGuffin-Person Reveal: The Sugar Stone is his own heart.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When he sneaks on the subway in Volume 2, he dresses like an insect using a series of implements that is in no way convincing. Somehow, it works.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He's got a pretty inflated opinion of himself usually and loves to brag.

Joey P.P.

A brooding and rough-around-the-edges porcupine who meets Sama in Undertown and convinces the boy to go along with him to avoid the insects. He, B.W., and Broom make up the original three members of the Junkyard gang, before they allow Sama and Eddie to join. While promising to help Sama find the Sugar Stone, he has his own ambitions, namely taking revenge on The Cloud

  • Forced Transformation: He was originally a raccoon. The Cloud transformed him into a porcupine after attacking his family... for some reason.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: The second volume has him being a notable mechanic according to Flee, who invents a machine to create a second Sugar Stone, called a "Mecha Dringling".
  • Hypocrite: Says how sick he is of Undertown's dependence on sugar and also gets on B.W.'s case for not being as brave as other rabbits, as well as getting frustrated with how the others waste time when they could be getting at The Cloud. It turns out that he's a spy for Branca who sold out his friends to The Cloud for a huge pack of sugar, despite still claiming to hate The Cloud.
  • It's All About Me: Although still helpful, he's usually more interested in his own goals than about helping Sama. And he turns out to be a traitor because of it.
    • Continues this trend in the second volume, apparently trying to turn Eddie in to The Mind. He even admits that he's not doing what he does to save Undertown like his dead mother wanted, he just wants to save himself.
  • Primal Stance: A lot more so than B.W. and Broom, he walks around with a hunch and sometimes even goes down on all fours.

B.W.

A rabbit who's next to meet Sama after Joey P.P, another member of the Junkyard Gang. Although rabbits in Undertown are generally known as being brave, B.W. hates fighting and prefers to hide from conflict, giving him a reputation as a 'fraidy. Despite this, he's still determined to help Sama, and hopes to escape to the surface world with him when the time comes.

  • Cowardly Lion: He's consistently viewed as a coward because of his inability to fight, but during the fight at the sugar factory he distracts The Cloud to prevent him killing Sama. This underlies Broom's statement that a hero is someone who knows how to help, whether by fighting or not.
  • Righteous Rabbit: He's kinder than Joey P.P. and a more selfless friend to Sama.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Has this attitude towards R.E. when Sama asks if she's his girlfriend, although he noticeably becomes flustered.
  • Verbal Tic: Constantly punctuates his speech with "how about it" (in the same vein as Japanese characters with their verbal tics translated to English.)

Broom

A penguin who, like most penguins, makes his living tending to the junkyard and is therefore referred to as the "janitor" of the gang. Although quiet and brusque, he's one of the wiser members of the group and is secretly skilled in munitions.

  • Mr. Exposition: He's responsible for delivering a lot of exposition on the Dringlings and teddy bears, as he's one of the few who fights the spell making people forget.
  • Neat Freak: A variant—he's often seen in the background trying to dust people off or otherwise sweep up dirt, even when it's inappropriate or annoying to do so. Makes sense, since he's a janitor.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's just called "Broom" in reference to his job as a janitor.

    The Furmen

In General

A group of mammalian animal people, the furmen are on the opposite side of the insects for control over Undertown's supply of sugar. As most of Sama's allies are furmen it's indicated they're the "good" side of the war, but that doesn't mean that some of them aren't shady or corrupt in their own right.

Mighty Chireugi

Part of the Brotherhood of Rats, who works with his brother Verbal to fight the Insect Insurgents and reassert their control over Undertown. He's captured in Volume 1 and spends a large portion of the book as a prisoner of The Cloud, before being rescued and taking a more active role as the commander of the furmen in the war.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He launches an assault on the Sugar Factory that allows Sama and co. to escape from it. Subverted in that Sama definitely viewed the attack as less than heroic. Previously, Sama and his friends were this for him when he was about to be executed in the Hallucination Room.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Subjected to this by The Cloud during his interrogation, and later in the Hallucination Room as a lead up to his execution.
  • Meaningful Name: Named "Mighty," he is the strongest and most militant in the Brotherhood of Rats.

Verbal Chireugi

Part of the Brotherhood of Rats, who works with his brother Mighty to fight the Insect Insurgents and reassert their control over Undertown; although in hiding, he's currently in charge of most of the Undertown furmen. He promises to help Sama if he reunites him with his brothers, Mighty and Noble, claiming that the three of them can create a portal back to the surface world.

  • Exact Words: Claims that he and his brothers can unite their tails to make a portal back home for Sama. Conveniently fails to mention that it was a temporary portal and Sama would be returned to Undertown in a matter of minutes.
  • Meaningful Name: Named "Verbal," he is a smooth operator among the brothers and appears to do all the talking for the brotherhood.

Noble Chireugi

A former part of the Brotherhood of Rats, he left his brothers and took up residence at the Butterfly Tree. Sama travels to the Butterfly Tree during the first volume to try and convince him to rejoin the brotherhood.

  • Meaningful Name: Named "Noble," he is the wisest of the brothers; lampshaded by Joey P.P. when he introduces himself right after spouting some proverbial wisdom.

R.E.

A rabbit girl who helps Sama and Co. get through the Sand Sea to rescue Mighty, she operates a jellyworm (a jellyfish that operates like a hot air balloon) and is a good friend of B.W.

  • Furry Female Mane: Notably averted, the closest she comes is her ears constantly hanging down like ponytails.
  • Wrench Wench: Her character design screams this, judging by the tools hanging from her belt.

    The Lizard Boys

In General

The Lizard Boys are a tribe-like group of reptilian animal people that guard the Sand Sea, whose great city has been overtaken and destroyed by the insects. Although several play a key part in the rescue of Mighty Chireugi, they are all unnamed until the second volume, where they again join forces with Sama's group after the comic shows some of their own efforts to resist the insects in the Sand Sea.

Iggy

One of the lizard boys who appears to be their leader.

  • Punny Name: Iggy, for a lizard—which is probably short for "Iguana," which his design is loosely based on.

    The Insect Insurgents

In General

The Insect Insurgents are a group of giant insects and the main antagonists of the story; under The Mind and The Cloud's direction, they're waging a brutal war with the furmen to take control of Undertown's supply of sugar and to find the Sugar Stone. Part of this seems to be due to a religious fascination the insects have with sugar itself.

  • Always Chaotic Evil: Every insect that we've seen onscreen is incredibly cruel and evil, and several furmen insist that this is the case. (Although Broom's comments imply that, outside of warfare, domestic insects probably don't act that much different from furmen.)
  • Blood Lust: Some of them, like Eyvind and Xenakis, show an eagerness to drink the blood of their enemies.

The Cloud/Colleen

The main villain of Volume 1, and The Dragon to the leader of the insects, The Mind. The Cloud is a mysterious insect with strong magical powers who commands many of the insurgents directly; in addition to trying to seize control of Undertown, he also seeks the Sugar Stone and will stop at nothing to obtain it. He is always accompanied by a tiny, less personified pet insect named "Flee".

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: She was once the same as Sama, traveling to Undertown on The Mind's trickery, but she was corrupted by The Mind into becoming the leader of the insects. She claims that once Sama defeated her, it broke her out of her "daze".
  • The Dragon: To The Mind as leader of the insects.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Cloud stops being a threat after Volume 1 and The Mind is revealed for the awful schemer he really is.
  • Facial Markings: Outside her suit, the girl who is The Cloud has a black line over one of her eyes. This becomes two black lines under her eyes after she's cleaned herself up.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Sama defeats The Cloud, the girl underneath the mask, Colleen, eventually joins his side. Played with, though—judging by some of her comments, she's still sympathetic to the insects, but knows The Mind does not have their best interests at heart.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: The reason Colleen went down into Undertown before becoming The Cloud; The Mind preyed on her desire to feel loved, claiming Undertown was "filled" with love.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is known about The Cloud, such as why he even wants the Sugar Stone in the first place. To a much greater extent, for when it's revealed The Cloud is a girl in a bug costume, it isn't known when she came to Undertown, nor is it known how or why she even became The Cloud, aside from rumors B.W. mentions that might be about her. The second volume expands on the girl's backstory considerably.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Begs the tiny little bug Flee not to leave after Sama accidentally reveals "he" is a human girl; Flee evidently had forgotten that The Cloud was really a human, or else didn't recognize his master Colleen in her dazed state.
  • The Reveal: The Cloud is not an insect, but a little girl in an insect suit. She also came into Undertown long ago and appears to have been intending to use the Sugar Stone to go home.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Everyone in-story treats The Cloud like a male, although his large abdomen might indicate otherwise—indeed, it's revealed that the human piloting him is actually a girl.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": "The" Cloud.
  • That Man Is Dead: After Sama breaks her costume and she jumps to her "death", she returns and claims that "The Cloud" really was defeated—now she's just Colleen.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Sama cracks The Cloud's mask and reveals "him" to be a human girl, The Mind abandons her.

Flee

The Cloud's companion, a tiny insect that flies around his head and speaks to him with a series of unintelligible buzzes. Although treated like nothing more than a pet in the first volume, the insect becomes more of an individual in the second, after being separated from The Cloud.

  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Flee communicates with buzzing noises, but every character they've spoken to seems to have no problem understanding what he says. Presumably some of this is to preserve spoilers, such as who and what his master really is.
  • Living Toys: On the surface, Flee was a cuddly stuffed bug toy that belonged to Colleen. Unlike Eddie's case, it's not certain if Flee came alive because he was originally from Undertown or if that was just a result of traveling down there.

The Mind

The leader of the insects in Undertown—and, incidentally, the reason why Sama is in Undertown in the first place, as the "old man" who spoke to Sama in the hospital. He seeks the sugar stone for his own reasons, and the insects believe him capable of having prophetic visions.

  • Body Horror: The scene where he shows up talking to The Cloud has him turning into a Dringling as accompanied by a lot of cracking and blood while his face changes.
  • Big Bad: As the leader of the insects, and being a Dringling, he's at least partially responsible for the Teddy Bear Exodus. It's also revealed that he's responsible for creating The Cloud, and is manipulating Xenakis and the rest of the insects similarly.
  • Last of His Kind: The second volume reveals that he is the last Dringling.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": "The" Mind.

Xenakis

One of the leaders of the Insect Insurgents in Undertown, who reports directly to The Cloud. After the first volume, he begins to take a more direct role as a Big Bad in his own right.

  • Blatant Lies: After The Cloud is revealed to be a human girl, who seemingly jumps to her death, Xenakis claims that that's just a vicious rumor and that The Cloud's just in hiding, even claiming that they're in communication with each other.
  • The Dragon: While The Cloud was this to The Mind, Xenakis is this to The Cloud.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After The Cloud is defeated in the first volume, Xenakis takes over leadership of The Hive with the lie that he's still answering to The Cloud.

Ikeda

A member of the insect insurgents who answers to Xenakis and The Cloud. He and his partner Eyvind are the first insects Sama encounters in Undertown. Of himself and Eyvind, Ikeda is the more intelligent of the two.

  • Spot the Imposter: He knows immediately that The Cloud on Xenakis' broadcast is a fake because The Cloud never spoke with an insect accent.

Eyvind

A slow-witted member of the insect insurgents who answers to Xenakis and The Cloud. He and his partner Ikeda are the first insects Sama encounters in Undertown. He's the only insect to wear clothes, specifically an eyepatch.

  • Blood Lust: He's very excited to drink Sama's blood.

    Other

Raindrop

Apparently the only other human in Undertown, Raindrop is a mysterious girl in black who appears to be around Sama's age. After rescuing Sama from the insects when he first arrives, Raindrop occasionally meets with him on his journey to offer cryptic comments about his fate in Undertown. She's expanded on in the second volume, where the readers learn she isn't really human at all.

  • Big Damn Heroes: In the very beginning of the story, she rescues Sama from insects. In the second volume she makes sure to remind him very clearly that she rescued him several times.
  • Clothing Appendage: Judging by her transformation sequence into a feathered and winged person, her clothes might actually be part of her.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Emphasized by how she's about the only character with black hair.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She's able to sprout wings and feathers on her body; turns out, she's descended from birds.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Frequently stalks Sama in the first volume; although she may indeed have a crush on him (judging by their kiss later), this is more because of wanting to help him with his supposed destiny in Undertown.
  • Shrinking Violet: Evidently, this is the reason why she was so vague and mysterious in the first volume.
Raindrop: I'm not bad. I'm just shy.
  • Unable to Cry: Claims this, that however sad she gets she can't cry, and she hopes that Sama will bring her back with him to find a way to solve this.
  • Winged Humanoid: She has very tiny wings on her back, although they appear to be part of her outfit. Later in the story she reveals she can grow wings and feathers, as she's actually some kind of bird-person.

Sama's Father

Sama's dad, who suffers a heart attack while in the middle of yelling at Sama over playing with his medals. He's in the hospital and is given about a month to live, leading Sama to try and find the Sugar Stone to save him.

  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Suddenly clutches at his chest in the middle of shouting and then ends up at the hospital by the next panel.

Sama's Mother

Sama's mother, who usually tries to comfort Sama over his dad's outbursts against him. She has more of a role in the second volume, as Sama begins having visions of her back in his world.

  • Foreshadowing: A vision Sama has of her in the second volume shows her arms turning into tentacles. She shows up in Undertown at the very end of the volume, having accidentally arrived with "Mr. Octo", one of Sama's other toys...
