Phillips Family Toys

Toys belonging to Sid and Hannah Phillips.

    Sid's Mutant Toys

Sid's Mutant Toys

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mutanttoys2.jpg
From Left to Right: Hand in a Box, Jingle Joe, Legs, Roller Bob, Ducky, The Frog, Rockmobile, Babyface, and Walking Car.

Film Appearances: Toy Story

Other Appearances: Toy Story Treats

All of the toys that were maimed, blown up, or had their body parts swapped by Sid Phillips. Despite their horrifying, Frankenstein's Monster-esque appearances, these toys are actually all friendly. The mutant toys appear to be led by an odd toy who appears to be made up of a baby doll head mounted on top of a spider body made from an Erector kit. Other members include a toy car with legs instead of wheels, a fishing pole with Barbie legs, a jack-in-the-box containing a grasping hand instead of a clown/jester, an action figure upper torso mounted onto a skateboard, a wind-up frog with mismatched wheels, a bizarre insect toy with a Rocky Gibraltar torso for legs, a Janie doll (which was Hannah's) with a Pterodactyl head (thanks to one of Sid's "operations"), a toy with a duck-headed PEZ dispenser on top of an action figure torso with a spring for a lower body, an action figure head on top of a musical roller toy, a rusted-up monster truck that was buried in some sand, two action figures who are missing some arms and/or legs, another doll, and one of the squeeze-toy aliens from Pizza Planet who got chewed by Scud.

  • All There in the Manual: Only a few of them are named in the movie (Ducky, Legs, the Frog, Little Green Man, and Roller Bob), the most central of them are named in official side material: Babyface/Spider-Baby, Ducky/Duck Man, Legs, Roller Bob, Rockmobile, Jingle Joe, the Frog and Hand-In-The-Box. A couple of them, like Babyface and Ducky, had inexplicable name changes on the official web site.
  • Body Horror: All of them are built from broken body parts of other toys.
  • Creepy Good: Creepy-looking mutant body horrors created by Sid, yet they're some of the nicest toys imaginable.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Some of the creepiest-looking things Pixar has ever made, and yet they're good guys.
  • The Dog Bites Back: When Woody convinces them to finally stand up to Sid.
  • Foreshadowing: When they first appear, they don't try to attack Woody and Buzz, the same happening when they block the door on the way out. This is a clue that they're not as cannibalistic as they seem.
  • Good All Along: They look scary, but turn out to be friendly.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Toy equivalent, due to Sid's cruel mutilations they are deformed thanks to missing parts and having oddly replacements. They aren't evil, though.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Woody and Buzz initially believe them to be cannibals after seeing them swarm and make off with the remains of Hannah's doll and a Pterodactyl toy. It's later revealed they just put the two broken toys back together.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Woody is shocked when they turn out to only look like monsters.
  • Put on a Bus: They stay at Sid's house after helping Woody and Buzz escape, and don't appear in any of the later movies.
  • Revenge: Woody's plan to save Buzz also allows them to take a sweet revenge on Sid by scaring the hell out of him and forcing him to not brutalize or mutilate toys anymore.
  • Shout-Out: The Pteranodon toy is very similar to this Jurassic Park toy.
  • The Speechless: Most of them, which adds to their creepiness, apart from Ducky, who's The Unintelligible (he speaks in Donald Duck - esque quacks), and a Burned Rag Doll who only says one word: "Mama."
  • Tragic Monster: In a sense. We learn to care about them after seeing why they snatched the remains of the Janie doll and pterodactyl toy, but only afterwards, and we don't see most of them being created before Woody and Buzz end up in Sid's room.
  • Why Isn't It Attacking?: Woody realizes this when he discovers they were actually fixing the other toys.

    Babyface

"Babyface"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/babyface_8.jpg

Film Appearances: Toy Story

Other Appearances: Toy Story Treats

The leader of the mutant toys in Sid's room. He is constructed from one of Hannah's baby dolls' heads with a missing eye on top of a spider-like body made from an Erector Set.

  • Charlie Brown Baldness: The top of the doll head has visible remains of hair while looking almost bald. Sid very likely pulled or cut off the hair.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The creepiest looking out of all the mutant toys, he is revealed along with the others to be nothing more than a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold when they repair Buzz.
  • Everyone Knows Morse: Uses a morse code message on one of the legs of Sid's metal table to call for the other mutilated toys and gather them to help Woody save Buzz.
  • Eye Scream: His doll head is missing an eye.
  • The Leader: Appears to be the leader of the mutilated toys. It's most noticeable when he calls the other toys to help Woody save Buzz.
  • Power Pincers: Has two pincers for hands.
  • Spider Limbs: Sid built a spider body with an Erector Set and stuck a baby doll's head on it.

    Hannah's Dolls

Janie, Sally, Marie-Antoinette and "Marie-Antoinette's little sister"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hannahdolls.jpg

Film Appearances: Toy Story

The dolls owned by Hannah Phillips. They're often stolen and mutilated by her brother Sid.

  • Body Horror: Sid decapitates Janie and switches her head with that of his plastic Pteranodon, much to Hannah's horror. Fortunately, the other mutant toys manage to patch both of them up.
  • Losing Your Head: Sid has the cruel habit of decapitating them, but Hannah keeps playing with them nonetheless, and the tea party ones are shown still living and waving at Woody despite being headless.
  • Meaningful Name: "Marie-Antoinette" is named as such because she lost her head, like the real one.
  • The Speechless: Save for the one that says "MAMMA!" when scaring the hell out of Sid at the end, none of them can talk. Janie has her mouth sewn and the other two dolls at the tea party don't have heads anymore. Sally is visibly of the same type as Janie so her mouth is also sewn.
  • Those Two Guys: Janie and the Pteranodon she was head-swapped with are seen together frequently afterward.

Poultry Palace Fun Meal Toys

The kid's meal toys living at the Poultry Palace fast food restaurant.

    Fun Meal Buzz

Fun Meal Buzz Lightyear

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minibuzz.jpg

Voiced by: Teddy Newton Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story Toons: Small Fry

A kid's meal version of Buzz Lightyear who lives at Poultry Palace. He's frustrated to be all day in a display and wants to be played with. Upon seeing Bonnie Anderson's Buzz, he decides to take his place.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He flirts with Jessie at a certain moment and she is clearly uncomfortable about it.
  • Easy Impersonation: None of Bonnie's toys buys that he is the real Buzz; except for Rex, who's dumb enough to think Buzz somehow shrank in the ball pit.
  • Fun Size: He's a small scale version of Buzz Lightyear to be given with kid's meals.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: The evergreen theme of the franchise. All he wants is to be taken away by a child and played with.
  • Signature Scent: He smells like french fries, due to being all day long on a display at the Poultry Palace restaurant. Woody is nauseated by that smell.

    Fun Meal Zurg

Fun Meal Zurg

Voiced by: Jess Harnell Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story Toons: Small Fry

A kid's meal version of Zurg who lives at Poultry Palace. Unlike Fun Meal Buzz, he's just content to sit in the display case and sell chicken.

  • Adaptational Heroism: He's not a galaxy-conquering madman, but a toy to help sell chicken.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: This Zurg doesn't spout off destructive declarations about wanting to end Buzz Lightyear's life, and actually gets along with his Fun Meal counterpart.
  • Brick Joke: He laments This Is Gonna Suck to the mini Zurg belt buckle. The Stinger at the end of the short reveals he's still talking to the buckle, laughing at whatever he just said.
  • Fun Size: He's a smaller version of Zurg who's sold in kid's meals.
  • Horrifying the Horror: He's based on one of the most evil characters in the Toy Story universe, yet he's scared of leaving his case because he doesn't want to upset the Poultry Palace management.
  • Punch-Clock Hero: He's really not interested in doing anything else other than selling chicken.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: He knows Fun Meal Buzz isn't going to enjoy life on the outside of the display case, but he doesn't have the power to do anything about it.

    Queen Neptuna

Queen Neptuna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/queenneptuna.jpg

Voiced by: Jane Lynch

Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story Toons: Small Fry

A kid's meal mermaid toy who presides a therapy group for other kid's meal toys in a backroom of the Poultry Palace.

  • Green Aesop: In her toyline's backstory, she is the queen of New Nautica and leader of the Mermaid Battle Squadron, which protects the oceans against pollution and exploitation.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: A classic mermaid with a fish tail.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: She's a mermaid toy with a trident that's fused to her hand.
  • Shout-Out: She very much sounds like a gender-flipped Aquaman in her toyline's backstory, minus being a fish-tailed mermaid.
  • Team Mom: She leads a therapy group to support other discarded kid's meal toys like her, sort of like a surrogate mother.
  • They Just Dont Get It: She doesn't get that Buzz is not a discarded toy and keeps him in the therapy group, much to his annoyance.

Sleep Well Motel Toys

The toys stolen by Ron the Manager to sell on an online auction.

    Combat Carl

Combat Carl

Voiced by: Carl Weathers Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story of Terror

  • Actor Allusion: He's missing part of his arm like Dillon from Predator.
  • An Arm and a Leg: As noted under "Actor Allusion", he's missing his arm from the elbow down. Carl was able to recover it thanks to Jessie getting it out of Mr. Jones' stomach.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Combat Carl doesn't give up. Combat Carl finds a way."
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Basically, if Dillon managed to survive his encounter with the original Predator.
  • Third-Person Person: There are only two lines in Toy Story of Terror where Combat Carl does not use this. ("Listen to me!" and "My hand!")
  • You Don't Look Like You: The Combat Carl that was blown up by Sid was clearly Caucasian. Although, it is possible that this is a second generation reboot Combat Carl.note

    Combat Carl Jr.

    Old Timer

Film Appearances: Toy Story 4

Other Appearances: Toy Story of Terror | Forky Asks a Question

One of the toys stolen by Ron Tompkins, a toy alarm clock with a mustache and beard.

  • The Cameo: He makes a brief appearance in the beginning of Toy Story 4 as one of Bonnie's toys in her closet.

    PEZ Cat

PEZ Cat

Voiced by: Kate McKinnon Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story of Terror

One of the toys stolen by Ron Tompkins, a PEZ dispenser with a cat head, and rather good vision.

  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Being a PEZ dispenser, she can get away with puking out a PEZ after Jessie gets Potato Head's arm out of Mr. Jones' throat.

    Transitron

Transitron

Voiced by: Peter Sohn Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story of Terror

One of the toys stolen by Ron at the Sleep Well Motel.

Mason's Toys

The Battlesaur toys owned by Mason, a friend of Bonnie Anderson.

    Reptillus Maximus

Reptillus Maximus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsttf_reptilius_1.jpg
"Greetings, I am Reptillus Maximus!"

Voiced by: Kevin McKidd Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story That Time Forgot

Reptillus is one of Mason's new Battlesaur toys he received for Christmas. He doesn't realize he is a toy until Trixie proves it to him.

  • Actor Allusion: He hails from a proud warrior kingdom from long ago.
  • Broken Ace: Briefly. Upon seeing the plastic casing he came packaged in, you can see his emotions cycle through fear, confusion, and anger.
  • The Cameo: He makes a surprising appearance on a store display in "Kingdom Hearts III", making him one of the few characters originating from shorts and specials to do so.
    • In Toy Story 4, his face appears on a lunchbox that Woody hides behind whilst at kindergarten.
  • Carry a Big Stick: His standard weapon is a spiked mace. Well, a toy weapon.
  • Dramatic Entrance: His first appearance. He leaps from his tower, tucks and rolls, twirls his staff, and strikes a pose. Trixie is impressed.
  • Heart Light: The Battlesaurs all have one mounted in the center of their armor, including him. In The Stinger, you can see Reptillus' Heart Light beating, as he gazes longingly out the window.
  • Irony: Buzz finds it incredible that he and the other Battlesaurs don't realize that they're toys. Though since he had a similar experience with another Buzz Lightyear, his surprise is probably more at how common this seems to be.
  • I Will Wait for You: Says something to the effect at the end of the special.
Reptillus: Farewell, Trixie of the Bonn-Yee tribe. My heart will burn bright, until the moment of your return... Tuesday, around 3:30.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: Has one in addition to his Heroic Build.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: In essence, what he does to the box he came in, refusing to believe he's a toy.
  • Slow-Motion Fall: When Trixie convinces Maximus how great it is to be a toy, he shuts off the power to Mason's game system, then freezes in position and begins to fall back in slow motion — into Mason's hand. The framing and music are designed to imitate any number of similar suicide scenes in film.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Seems to have become this with Trixie by the end of the special.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: While chasing Trixie, Reptillus encounters the box he came in, even sees his own reflection on the transparent molding. This is when he starts to realize that he's just a toy. Ironically he's still quicker on the uptake than Buzz, who spent some time around his own packaging and needed an actual commercial to prove it to him.
  • Uplifted Animal: Based on the intro of the Show Within a Show Battlesaurs, he was a regular T. rex in the past before a Brain in a Jar enigma blasted him with an energy beam that uplifted him as Battlesaur warrior.

    The Cleric

The Cleric

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxresdefault_1.jpg
"I find their lack of armor disturbing."

Voiced by: Steve Purcell Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story That Time Forgot

The Cleric is the leader of Mason's new Battlesaur toys that he got for Christmas. He takes control of the other Battlesaurs and hides the truth that they are really toys from them, and tries to destroy Woody and Buzz.

  • Artificial Limbs: He has a mechanical arm.
  • Gladiator Games: The Battlesaurs engage in this because of his leadership.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Implied from his blissful expression after having been played with for the first time.
  • Karma Houdini: Nothing really bad happens to the Cleric in the end. He just loses his power over the Battlesaurs. However it appears that after being played with for the first time he has gone through a Heel–Face Turn.
  • People Puppets: The Cleric controls Rex through his armor and forces him to hold his own friends over a spinning fan.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The Cleric genuinely believes that it is the best thing for his people that they remain in the dark about their true nature, as he thinks, since Mason is not interested in playing with them, they would experience an identity crisis. He snaps out of it by the story's end.

Miscellaneous Toys

    Ducky and Bunny

Ducky and Bunny

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dr49dlmucaintoc.jpg
"What about the old plush rush?"

Voiced by: Keegan-Michael Key (Ducky), Jordan Peele (Bunny) Other voice actors for Ducky Other voice actors for Bunny

Appearances: Toy Story 4

Ducky: Hey, up here, Astro boy.
Bunny: If you think you can take our top prize spots, you’re wrong!
Ducky: Dead wrong!

Two obnoxious plush carnival prizes who are eager to be won.

  • Actor Allusion: Their appearance in the Teaser Trailer reaction video is clearly a family-friendly version of the "Valets" sketch from Key & Peele.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Bunny is a blue and green rabbit plush. Justified in that he's clearly not meant to be an actual rabbit.
  • Ambiguously Gay: While nothing about either of their sexualities is actually hinted at, they have a decent amount of subtext between each other - i.e. arguing and bickering Like an Old Married Couple, being literally sewn together by hand, and the way Ducky jumps onto Bunny when he’s scared. Not only that, but their excitement over being owned by a kid is presented very similarly to two gay men wanting to adopt a baby. It also helps that Ducky is a British term of endearment, similar to "darling" or "dear" and is used to describe women and gay men. On the other hand, they're voiced by an iconic comedy duo which could just make their personalities an extension of their voice actors, but it remains just ambiguous enough that it can be interpreted either way without issue.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: During the closing credits there is a scene of them turning into giant versions of themselves shooting lasers from their eyes.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Bunny's a big rabbit plush and Ducky's a small duck plush.
  • Cartoon Creature: Ducky looks both like a cartoon duck and a cartoon chick.
  • Chained Heat: A variation where they're sewn together at their hands. The problems the usual application of the trope come with still apply, though.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Their plan to break into a cabinet to get to Forky involves jumping out and attacking the antique store owner. When Buzz says no, they agree that it's too visible... and come up with a new plan that involves them distracting the owner and then jumping out and attacking her.
  • Depending on the Artist: As seen in their profile picture, early trailers and posters, as well as video game appearances, depict them as being separated rather than sewn together at the hand like they are in the film.
  • The Dividual: Throughout the movie they're always together and act as a duo. Not that they have much choice about it, their hands being sewed together.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A duck and a bunny named Ducky and Bunny.
  • Face Hugger: They are fond of jumping into people's faces.
  • Fat and Skinny: Bunny and Ducky, respectively.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: One way to look at them given their willingness to attack humans as well as wanting to burn down the entire carnival.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: They're literally inseparable because they're sewn together at the hands.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Their somewhat grating personas are pretty much due to being stuck on the carnival prize wall for years, but they both end up being pretty decent guys.
  • Keet: Both are quite energetic and expressive.
  • One-Steve Limit: There was another Ducky in the Toy Story franchise before this one — the Pez-on-a-baby-doll-body mutant toy that was assembled by Sid Phillips in Toy Story.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: They're the sole characters in Toy Story 4 whose main purpose is to goof around and be funny.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Gender Inverted. Ducky is male, but has eyelashes, which are stereotypically associated with women.
  • Those Two Guys: They never separate from each other (mostly because they're stuck together due to being a double prize). It helps that they're voiced by Key & Peele.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Although they both have high-pitched voices, they sound much more masculine than you'd expect from two androgynous-looking stuffed animals. More so with Ducky, who not only looks like a baby, but also has eyelashes.
  • Wheel o' Feet: Ducky does this briefly while winding up to kick Buzz in the head.
  • Would Harm a Senior: Played for Laughs. Though they don't actually do the deed, they're willing to attack Margaret, the old lady who runs the Second Chance Antiques store, just to steal her keys.

    Giggle McDimples

Giggle McDimples

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/officer_giggle_mcdimples.png

Voiced by: Ally Maki Other voice actors

Appearances: Toy Story 4

A miniature 80's plastic cop doll who serves as Bo Peep's personal assistant.

  • Covered in Gunge: After being swallowed and puked back by Dragon the cat, she's covered in the cat's gastric slime.
  • Expy: Imagine if Polly Pocket were a cop. Personality-wise, invokedWord of God has said that one of her biggest inspirations was Jiminy Cricket from Disney's Pinocchio.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She used to date a He-Man.
  • The Hyena: She's named Giggles for a reason.
  • Lilliputians: She's easily the tiniest Living Toy of the entire Toy Story franchise cast.
  • Shoulder Teammate: She's frequently seen standing on Bo Peep's shoulder, and jumps on those of Woody at times.
  • Sidekick: She's Bo Peep's friend and personal assistant in their adventures.
  • Swallowed Whole: She gets swallowed by Dragon the cat at some point, and gets puked back up shortly after.
