Like the Uchigatana, Wakizashi (脇差) deal decent damage but have limited range. Kiwame wakizashi gain the ability to randomly block attacks directed at them. They have the highest scouting skills.

    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Blocking Stops All Damage: Kiwame wakizashi gain the ability to block/parry enemy attacks. This is especially useful when coming up against ōdachi and naginata, as teammates within range of the attacks will also be spared.
  • Combination Attack: If a team contains at least one uchigatana and one wakizashi, they have a chance of triggering a double attack that especially comes in handy against enemies with high leadership and thick troops.
  • Fragile Speedster: Slightly more durable than tantou swords due to having two equipment slots, but their base Leadership stat is still quite low.
  • Target Spotter: Swords in this class have the highest Scouting stats, which makes them ideal for this.
  • Short Teens, Tall Adults: With the exception of Nikkari Aoe, who just appears to be a short young adult, the other wakizashi take on the appearances and mindsets of teenagers in their human forms due to their blades being medium length compared to larger blades such as the tachi, oodachi, and so on.

    19, 20 – Nikkari Aoe (にっかり青江)

Kiwame Form
Casual Form

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku); High (Kiwame)
School: Aoe (青江)

Illustrated by: Becco
Live actor: Hirofumi Araki (Musical)
"I am Nikkari Aoe. Yup, yup, you're thinking that my name is strange too, aren't you?"

A sword that is associated with a ghost story. A samurai was on a journey and had to stay the night at an inn. At night, a woman and her child appeared in front of him and giggled in an unsettling manner. The samurai demanded to know who they were to no avail and when they kept coming toward him, giggling, he panicked and beheaded both of them. In the morning, there was no dead body. Instead, the samurai saw two stone lamps, the tops of which were cut off, and realised that he "killed" two ghosts. His blade was named "Nikkari" after the incident.

  • Ambiguous Situation: The mother ghost from the story about Nikkari's sword appears in his awakening sprite. It's unknown if she is literally present and possessing his sword, or if Nikkari's new-found kiwame powers merely take her form.
  • Badass Cape: It's notably a robe that's worn by miko, priests and even dressed on the dead, in reference to his backstory. He wears it properly in his Kiwame form.
  • Bigger Is Better: Some of his more raunchy lines across the various continuities reveal that he prefers men who are "well-endowed". This may also extend to the size of men themselves, as a frequent target of his flirtations is the very tall Ishikirimaru.
  • Birds of a Feather: Despite their differences, Nikkari and Ishikirimaru are both relaxed and kindly individuals with kind hearts and an interest in spirituality. Their friendship is always portrayed as being quite harmonious and they are often seen together chatting and drinking tea.
  • But Not Too Bi: In a franchise full of Ambiguously Bi characters, he's one of the few who are unambiguously attracted to men. However, since it's not a romance series nor does it have a lot in the way of people crushin on others, it's not as if one can see his interest in men and/or women often.
  • Character Development: For Kiwame training, Nikkari wanders around aimlessly before deciding to stay with the Kyougoku clan. There, he discovers that the head of the household, Takatsugu, is being gossiped about and insulted behind his back, but Nikkari knows that none of those rumours are true, since Takatsugu was in actuality a valiant man. It is then Nikkari realizes that he must learn to ignore what others say and simply prove them wrong if they think otherwise. He returns more eager to put his skills to good use to suit the Saniwa.
  • The Heart: He plays this role in Mihotose no Komoriuta, acting as the confidant to Ishikirimaru, Ookurikara and Sengo Muramasa while also trying to make everyone understand what they've been going through emotionally.
  • Those Two Guys: Falls into this with Ishikirimaru whenever they appear in the same adaptation.
  • Odd Couple: Funnily enough, he and Ishikirimaru are usually depicted as being very close, despite their massive differences. Nikkari is a flirtatious trickster who may or may not be possessed by a ghost, while Ishikirimaru is a modest and unprovocative holy sword that acts and dresses like a priest.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: A malevolent ghost woman can be seen behind Nikkari in his Kiwame awakened sprite.
  • Perpetual Smiler: True to his name, which means "giggling" or "grinning widely" depending on context.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His red eye is only visible in his awakened sprite.
  • Safe, Sane, and Consensual: It's heavily implied in an episode of the anime that Nikkari has engaged in bondage before, as he knows how to escape from Kikkou's elaborate shibari but refuses to answer when asked how.
  • The Runt at the End: Inverted; he's the only wakizashi who looks like an adult rather than a young teenager. It's explained that this is because he used to be an oodachi that was converted to a wakizashi at some point. Leads to some Fridge Logic when you consider that Namazuo and Honebami used to be naginata, and were thus probably larger than he used to be.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: One of his eyes is red. The game implies that the reason why his right eye is red is because a ghost possessed his sword, since, in his Kiwame form, both of his eyes are gold in his awakened sprite.
  • The Tease: Some of his lines are obvious double entendres, such as the Battle Records onequote and one of his lines when he's injuredquote.
  • Uncanny Valley: Employed intentionally in the musicals. His actor gives Nikkari very stiff movements outside of dancing and fight scenes in order to make him seem more ghostly and dead.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Subverted in that he brutally killed a ghost child. However, his interactions with the Tantou characters in the anime and with baby Tokugawa Ieyasu in Mihotose show that when in control of his own actions, he's more like a Friend to All Children, even if he does get a bit awkward at times.

    27, 28 – Namazuo Toushirou (鯰尾藤四郎)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/namazuo_1_6.png
Kiwame Form
Casual

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku), High (Kiwame)
School: Awataguchi (粟田口)
Voiced by: Soma Saito (Japanese), Rachel Robinson (English)
Illustrated by: Teku
Live actor: Taishi Sugie (Stage Play)
"My name is Namazuo Toushirou. I got burnt and part of my memories is missing, but I won't look back at the past!"

A wakizashi forged by Awataguchi, Namazuo lost some of his memories due to being burned in a fire at Osaka Castle. Despite this, he's a cheerful boy who won't let the past drag him down.

  • Animal Motifs: In his case, catfish. His blade is said to resemble the tail of one, and was quite literally named for it. His Kiwame form takes it further: the armor on his left arm resembles a catfish and the rest of his armor has an ocean wave pattern.
  • Character Development: In hopes that he may move forward with his life, Namazuo leaves for Kiwame training to regain his lost memories. Sneaking into Osaka castle, he reunites with his beloved master Hideyori. He regains his memories, recalling sadly that he and his former master will be swallowed by flames. However, he returns, satisfied.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: His thought process when not fighting is rather odd. For example, his line about throwing horse poop and being genuinely surprised when the Saniwa rejects the collected poop.
"I've collected the horse poop!...Eh, you don't need it?"
  • Combat Stilettos: In his Kiwame form, he wears high heels into battle.
  • Dung Fu: If you assign him to horsekeeping, he says he'll do this to people he hates with horse poop. He even collects the horse poop when he comes back.
"I'll throw horse poop at those I hate~"
  • Elemental Weapon: After Kiwame training, his Wakizashi appears to generate electricity.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After Kiwame, he wears his hair in a high ponytail instead of his low one, even for Internal Affairs.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: He and Honebami do this if paired up in the internal affairs.
Honebami: "Perhaps, we former naginata are..."
Namazuo: "...being mistaken for sickles or something."
  • Idiot Hair: Has a very prominent one. While he isn't exactly an idiot, his way of thinking can be rather strange at times. In Hanamaru, it even wiggles.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Honebami, according to Word of God. Despite outwardly being very quiet and stoic, he's secretly very fragile and sensitive and relies on Namazuo quite a bit.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite being damaged in a fire, he tries to be positive and live in the moment. He lampshades it being an act in his Kiwame letters, and afterwards is more honest about his feelings.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Honebami's blue. Namazuo is more cheerful, becomes more Hot-Blooded in battle, and tries to be positive despite the loss of his memories.
  • Stepford Smiler: The Depressed type. He's usually very chipper and often comments that he won't let the past depress him. The he reaches Osaka, the place when he was burned, and he becomes a trembling mess. He's not so chipper as shown in a skit with Ichigo and Word of God says that he's also like that around Honebami, so it's implied that he tries to be cheerful for the Saniwa.
"If only I could do things over..."
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He and Honebami look like twins save for their different hair colors.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Thanks to being burnt in a fire, he's lost part of his memories. Despite this, he doesn't seem to let that bother him much. Or does he. Kiwame reveals that it always did bother him, hence why he left for the journey to seek closure.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Why Did It Have To Be Fire? Being burnt in the Osaka Fires was very traumatizing for him and he actually breaks down when he arrives to the place he was burned.

Namazuo (Warriors)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2b653d99_a6a4_43c0_904f_fded587695a6.png

A wakizashi crafted by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu, a swordsmith in the Kamakura Era, and one of the Toushiro brothers. Originally a small naginata (long bladed pole weapon), he was refined into a wakizashi. He is strong-willed and sometimes chastises his master to not get burned, but he also has a positive attitude of not dwelling on the past.

In this game, he is assigned to the Second Team with Ichigo Hitofuri.

  • Bash Brothers: With his actual brothers Ichigo Hitofuri and Yagen Toushirou.
  • Elemental Weapon: His Wakizashi generates electricity during his special moves and Shinken Hissatsu, referencing the powers he gained after Kiwame training in the browser game.
  • Forgetful Jones: He appears to be forgetful in general, as he is frequently chastised in his Bond Conversations for forgetting to pick up after himself.
  • Hidden Depths: One of his most prized possessions is a Sakura Bonsai that he planted himself and tends to in secret. He's actually embarrassed about it though, and is even more so when Tomoegata praises him about how well he's taken care of it.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Several hundred years old, but acts like a exuberant teenage boy. He also has childish habits like being a picky eater, disliking doing chores, and just generally being messy to the point it annoying Hasebe.
  • Not Afraid to Die: When faced with the prospect of dying to prevent Kurokage's dream timelime from merging with history, he says that if the Second Team must fall in battle, they will do so gracefully, in accordance with Kasen's teachings.
  • Picky Eater: Both Ichigo and Hasebe complain about him not eating everything on his plate.
  • The Pollyanna: He's the most outgoing sword in the citadel, always trying to keep a positive attitude and lift his friends' spirits. That said, he does have his own down moments and holds some guilt over not being able to help his friends or their missing Saniwa.
  • Sibling Team: Assigned to the Second Team along with Ichigo Hitofuri, his older brother. In the later stages of the game, he can also be partnered with Yagen Toushirou, with the two having special voice lines for each other.
  • Super Gullible: Fell for Mikazuki tricking him into bringing him tea and snacks five times before he realized he was being deceived.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: In their Bond Conversation, he complains to Hasebe about being so naggy and says the Saniwa would be put off by his attitude, only for him to be put off when Hasebe takes his words to heart and starts acting more agreeable. He then asks Hasebe to go back to his old naggy self because he prefers it.

    29, 30 – Honebami Toushirou (骨喰藤四郎)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/01ea9288_a717_41e7_81de_399eb16ee5b7.png
Kiwame Form
Casual

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku); High (Kiwame)
School: Awataguchi (粟田口)
Voiced by: Yūto Suzuki (Japanese), Daman Mills [Hanamaru];
Griffin Burns [Katsugeki] (English)
Illustrated by: Teku
Live actors: Naoya Kitagawa [2017], Ryo Mitsuya [2018-Current] (Stage Play), Fūma Sadamoto (Film)
"I'm Honebami Toushirou. You'll have to excuse me. My memories are far and few between."
Another wakizashi made by Awataguchi. Like Namazuo, Honebami suffers from memory loss thanks to a fire, but he's far more affected by it and is more quiet and antisocial.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: A minor example in the live-action film. Honebami is merely quiet and not much else in the live-action movie, unlike how he is in the browser game and most other works, where he is quiet, aloof to the point of coldness, and distant. His feelings for Mikazuki are also subtly warmer, despite the fact that he still does not remember him, as he almost immediately agrees to quietly help him during his mission with the understanding that he is doing so for the sake of an old friend, whereas in other works, it takes Honebami longer to warm up to Mikazuki due to his lost memories and rebuild the sense of trust that they once shared.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Refers to Doudanuki as "Tanuki". Doudanuki in turn refers to him as "Bami". Doudanuki tries out "Hone" as well, but they both agree that Bami sounds nicer.
  • Age Lift: Honebami's physical and mental age changes Depending on the Writer. In the animes, he is depicted as being the little brother to Yagen, making him early-to-mid-teens while Yagen is an adult. In the movie and the stage plays however, Yagen refers to him as his older brother.
  • Better with Non-Human Company: The shy type. Aside from his closeness to Namazuo (reaching Living Emotional Crutch levels according to Word of God), he's not very sociable with the Saniwa or with the other swords, but he's still very fond of the horses. In the official artbook, there's even a sketch of him petting a horse while genuinely smiling.
  • Character Development: Honebami travels to the past in order to seek out his lost memories, using documents to travel to the families who kept him. He learns that he was not burned like Ichigo and Namazuo at Osaka, and it was the pain of being left behind when he was stored away and safe from the fire where many of his brothers were burned, coupled with the later fires of Meireiki burning him that caused his amnesia. However, realizing now that he has his family, friends, and the Saniwa unlike the loneliness of his past, he returns knowing he can live with the pain of his memories.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: To Namazuo; in the official artbook, he's shown to be annoyed at Namazuo's antics. However, at the same time he's also been confirmed to view Namazuo as his Living Emotional Crutch.
  • Combat Stilettos: In his Kiwame form, he wears high heels into battle.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: It's subtle, but he grows out the locks of hair in front of his ears after Kiwame.
  • The Ghost: While he doesn't appear in Warriors proper, he gets mentioned by Namazuo in his Bond Conversation with Mikazuki Munechika due to the two having been owned by the same master.
  • Hates Being Touched:
    • By the Saniwa, at least. His reactions when being clicked on...aren't friendly.
      "Leave me alone."
      "...Don't touch me."
      (sigh)
    • Subverted after Kiwame. While he doesn't have very positive reactions still to being clicked on, he expresses that he's more afraid of becoming clingy (as he actually enjoys being touched).
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: He and Namazuo do this if paired up in the internal affairs.
    Honebami: "But, doing fieldwork—"
Namazuo: "—We both like that, right!"
  • Hidden Depths: Honebami's real identity (which was hinted at by Word of God and in an interview with his voice actor for Hanamaru) is revealed to be a sensitive, delicate individual who hates to be alone.
  • Leitmotif: His attendant BGM shares a melody section with Mikazuki's.
  • Naïve Newcomer: In the live action film, Honebami is a newcomer to Honmaru, having manifested just a few hours before Mikazuki and his team returned home from their mission.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Honebami literally means bone eater, named after a ghastly story where someone pretended to cut a friend with the exact blade, only to kill them by cutting through their bones without landing an actual hit. This is reflected in his Kiwame form, with his new armor being somewhat skeletal in appearance.
  • Odd Couple / Odd Friendship: Seems to be surprisingly close to Doudanuki if their interactions in the game and stage plays are any indication.
  • Old Friend: His relationship with Mikazuki Munechika dates back hundreds of years, as they were both owned by the Ashikaga Shogunate for a time and displayed together before Mikazuki was passed down to a different owner. The two have the opportunity to reunite in a Recollection, which depicts Mikazuki being unusually excited to see him, implying that the two were very close during this time. Unfortunately for both him and Honebami, however, the fire erased Honebami's memories of their friendship, meaning they have to start over from beginning.
  • The Quiet One:
    • Not to Nakigitsune's extent, but he's still not much of a conversationalist.
    • In the first live-action movie, you could probably count on two hands how much he actually spoke.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Namazuo's red. He's more quiet and withdrawn, remains calm in battle, and is much more visibly bothered by his memory loss than Namazuo is.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: He has the typical physical characteristic (white bobbed hair), has a quiet personality and has suffered from a Dark and Troubled Past that left him with a major injury that he never quite gets over.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: If he gets destroyed in his Kiwame form.
Sorry... master. I'm going to the underworld... to seek my past.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He and Namazuo look like twins save for their different hair colors.
  • Survivor Guilt: Honebami realizes this was what he felt in the past when he was unscathed by the Osaka fires, but his brothers were not as lucky.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: He's lost far more of his memories than Namazuo has, and as a result he's much more withdrawn. For some reason, Namazuo and Mikazuki refuse to tell him about how he used to be in the past and even Honebami himself acknowledges that it's probably for the best if he doesn't remember. Ultimately after Kiwame, he regains his memories and most of his former, fragile self. However, he becomes a better person because he acknowledges that his current self has what his past self wanted: to be surrounded by loved ones.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Being burnt in a fire (revealed to be the fires of Meireiki after Kiwame) was very traumatizing for him.
    67, 68 – Monoyoshi Sadamune (物吉貞宗)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5537cf1b_cddd_4acd_804c_11fda89deb0f.png
Kiwame Form
Casual

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku); High (Kiwame)
School: Sadamune (貞宗)
Voiced by: Kensho Ono (Japanese), Apphia Yu (English)
Illustrated by: Izumi
Live actor: Ryuugi Yokota (Musical)
"My name is Monoyoshi Sadamune! Shall I bring you good luck this time?"
A wakizashi owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu and often said to be Ieyasu's good luck charm, since whenever he was carried into battle Ieyasu would always win. A cheerful and good-natured boy who wants to spread his good luck to everyone.
  • Ambiguously Related: To the other Sadamune swords, as he does not interact with Taikogane or Kikkou in the browser game, despite their shared school.
  • Born Lucky: Historically, he was thought to bring good luck since Tokugawa Ieyasu would always win whenever he brought the wakizashi with him to battle. In-game, he has a very high Killing Blow stat (which raises the chances of him going into Awakening mode and dealing critical hits twice in a row). Considering how his name contains the kanji for "luck", it only makes sense.
  • Catchphrase: He often says "good luck" or related to fortune in most of his quotes.
"Good luck will always be on this side!"
  • Character Development: Monoyoshi travels to Owari and decides to train with the founder of the Tokugawa clan, Lord Yoshinao. Amid the locale frenzy however, he learns that Lord Iemitsu has fallen sick and it seems Lord Yoshinao has taken the mantle to protect the shogunate. Despite his willingness to serve, Yoshinao's actions raises some doubt, as the shogunate starts accusing him for acting the shogun. Monoyoshi questions his thinking and Yoshinao reasons that despite what others make of him, he did what he did because that is what morality asks of him and he'll keep to that faith. Monoyoshi soon realizes that this is what it means to be strong and he returns, promising the Saniwa that he will show them his newfound strength through battle.
  • Cool Crown: He wears a small but elaborate one in his Kiwame form.
  • Determinator: In both of his standard and Kiwame front line quotes about protecting others.
(in his standard form) "I will protect everyone!"
(in his Kiwame form) "With the power of good luck, I'll protect everyone!"
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He wears half of a jacket/arm guard combination on his right arm.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has strawberry blonde hair, and wants nothing more than other people to be happy and just as lucky as he is.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Surprisingly, when Goutou Toushirou argues to him that humans only look out for themselves, he reveals that he's aware of this. He doesn't mind, because if humans didn't look out for themselves, they'd die.
  • Nice Guy: He always wants to help others and make them smile.
"Al~right, today I'll bring good luck too!"
  • This Cannot Be!: If he gets destroyed in his standard form.
    "It... can't be, I'm..."
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He made his musical debut in the play Mihotose and hasn't been seen again outside of non-canonical special performances and concerts, in contrast to the majority of other Touken Danshi who have at least two main stage performances before going MIA.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the musical, he is played by Ryuugi Yokota, who, when in costume, looks like Monoyoshi stepped out of the game and onto the stage. However, his actor makes no attempt to sound like him, speaking in a deep, masculine voice in contrast to Monoyoshi's youthful tenor, which creates a jarring dissonance.
    99, 100 – Horikawa Kunihiro (堀川国広)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c7912207_f13e_4ed1_b9df_fc33a399f505.png
Kiwame Form

Casual

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku); High (Kiwame)
School: Horikawa (堀川)
Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki (Japanese), Justin Pate [Hanamaru];
Zach Aguilar [Katsugeki] (English)
Illustrated by: Shiramine
Live actors: Yuuki Ogoe [2016-2017]; Shougo Sakamoto [2018-Current] (Musical), Eito Konishi (Movie, Stageplay),
"Excuse me. Has Kane-san...... Izuminokami Kanesada hasn't come here, has he? Ah, I'm Horikawa Kunihiro. Let's get along."
A wakizashi who was wielded by Hijikata Toshizou of The Shinsengumi. He enjoys doing chores and helping others, and is the self-proclaimed assistant of Izuminokami Kanesada (who was also wielded by Hijikata).

He is also a main character in Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu and a major player in the second live-action film adaptation.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Apparent especially if you have him spar against Mutsunokami, who notes how scary it is that Horikawa can analyze so calmly during a fight.
  • Badass Longcoat: He gains one in his Kiwame form.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: See Combat Pragmatist below. It's interesting as well to note that while most other swords immediately curse the enemy upon receiving injury, Horikawa focuses in maintaining composure and repeatedly tells himself to not get angry. He is also not a pushover to "Kane-san" as shown in their special internal affairs interaction; when Izuminokami tries to goad Horikawa into doing all the horsekeeping for him, Horikawa turns it back on Izuminokami by making him do all the work.
Izuminokami: "Dammit, you betrayed me, Kunihiro! You did nothing but look on!"
Horikawa: "My bad, Kane-san. Master told me to stand watch, though."
  • Character Development: Horikawa infiltrates the Shinsengumi and works side by side with his former master, Hijikata Toshizou during his Kiwame training to become stronger and more useful in battle. He wistfully acknowledges that the age of swords has become something of a distant past after the samurai era, but realizes that there is a person he now calls Master, who is still in need of his strength. With a newfound determination to fight with all his might for the Saniwa, Horikawa returns to the citadel.
  • Combat Pragmatist: According to his lines, he can play foul just fine, and assassinations under the darkness (probably a reference to the ones that are said to have been done by his former owner) are his specialty. He lacks the smugness usually associated to this trope, however.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: In Katsugeki, Horikawa's eyes slowly become more dull and lifeless as he becomes more depressed and unable to accept his former master's tragic fate, which history intended. After realizing history is starting to marginally change because of the instability of time-space, he takes this as an opportunity to prevent his former master's demise. His depressive state is further heightened by his major conflict with Izuminokami, who strongly disagrees with changing the course of history to save Hijikata.
  • The Heart: Plays the emotional center of the First Unit in Bakamatsu Tenrouden, observing the other members' feelings and trying to make peace between the quarreling parties. He also tries to act as Izuminokami's conscience at points.
  • Ignored Enamoured Underling: It's never outright stated, but it is sometimes implied in the various adaptations that Horikawa's dedication to Izuminokami is at least partially motivated by romantic love. Kane-san for his part very clearly cares for Horikawa, but seems Oblivious to Love, and may not even understand what romantic love is, considering his status as the youngest sword in the cast.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: He's very domestic in personality; he enjoys doing household chores like cleaning and laundry, and Word of God describes him as being "like a wife".
  • Memento MacGuffin: In Katsugeki, the earrings he wears were actually given to him by Izuminokami during their second mission. To Horikawa, the earrings symbolize courage, trust, and the confidence to be able to fight. This explains why he wasn't wearing them during their first mission.
  • Leitmotif: His attendant theme, naturally, plays a melody that's found in Izuminokami's.
  • Little Big Brother: His exact forge date is debated, but experts mostly estimate he was forged some time before Yamanbagiri was. Despite this, he is shorter than his younger brother, with a cuter, rounder face. In the official High School AU manga, he's a year older than Yamanbagiri despite being much shorter.
  • Nice Guy: He's always willing to help others with any kind of work, especially Izuminokami (though he does have his limits, as seen at Beware the Nice Ones above). According to Word of God, he likes devoting himself to others.
  • Older Than They Look: He's a senior in the High School AU manga, making him the second oldest among the Shinsengumi swords despite being the shortest.
  • Parenting the Husband: A downplayed version of this dynamic with Izuminokami, depending on how you see their relationship.
  • Satellite Character: Much of his character, if not almost all of it, revolves around his role as Izuminokami Kanesada's assistant, to the point where the majority of his dialogue in the browser game refers to him. This remains unchanged even after Kiwame's training, when he returns to the citadel more dedicated to Izuminokami than ever. Even in the adaptations, Horikawa's characterization remains consistently Izuminokami-focused, as any struggle he encounters usually relates back to him.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He wears a pure white one in his Kiwame form.
  • Stage Magician: In the second season of Hanamaru he seems to be becoming a budding one, since he's taken up magic tricks as a hobby.
  • Take Care of the Kids: If he gets destroyed in his Kiwame form.
Sorry, master. Kane-san's troublesome, but he's not a bad person... Please take care of him...
  • Team Mom: In several stories in the official anthologies, his dynamic with Izuminokami is often compared to a doting mother and her child. This is, however, from the point of view of other characters. Horikawa himself is quite horrified at the idea of Izuminokami seeing him as a parent and begins crying from despair when it's suggested to him.
  • Tears of Remorse: In Katsugeki, despite spending three years to be with his former master, Hijikata and to prevent his demise in the Battle of Hakodate. However, no matter how many times Horikawa tries to prevent his former master's death, his fate will always remain the same. He is seen dropping to his knees and grieving over his death.
  • Those Two Guys: In the Hanamaru anime, he's almost always seen with Izuminokami. The only time he isn't shown with Izuminokami is when he's interacting with his brothers.
  • Tritagonist: Serves as the third most important character in Katsugeki, becoming more prominent in the latter half of the anime. The manga makes him out to be more of a Deuteragonist, getting second billing underneath Izuminokami.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Izuminokami Kanesada, who he calls "Kane-san". Most of his quotes are about Izuminokami in some way, and he constantly worries what will happen if he's not there to be "Kane-san"'s partner and assistant. Even in his death line, he's more worried about Izuminokami than himself.
    Since I'm Kane-san's partner, I'm his assistant.
  • The Watson: In Katsugeki, he constantly asks questions about the nature of their mission against the Retrograde Forces, why they act the way they do, and why they're doing it. Justified since he's relatively new to the mission.

Rarity: Medium (Basic/Toku); High (Kiwame)
School: Kotetsu (虎徹)

Live actor: Yо̄jirо̄ Itokawa (Musicial)
"I'm Urashima Kotetsu! Hey! Wanna go to the Palace of the Dragon King with me? I don't know which way it is, though!"
A wakizashi from the Kotetsu school, Urashima is an energetic and talkative boy who often makes references to the Japanese folktale of Urashima Tarou. He's always accompanied by his pet turtle, Kamekichi.
  • Badass Longcoat: He gains one in his Kiwame form.
  • Big Brother Worship: He looks up a lot to his brothers, saying he doesn't care whether or not they're fakes.
  • Character Development: For Kiwame training, Urashima journeys to the Edo period to look for his creator, Kotetsu. The reasoning behind his wanting to train stems from his desire to confirm Urashima Taro's existence. During his stay, he experiences how he himself as a blade was forged, and asks Kotetsu if the carving on his blade was really Urashima Taro. Kotetsu replies with, "If it looks like Urashima to me then Urashima it is." Through this answer alone, Urashima realizes that Urashima Taro exists because he himself believes he is real, which is more than enough for him. Having found his answer, Urashima returns to the Citadel, reassured of his origins.
  • Fairy Tale Motifs: His overall character is largely based on the titular character of the Japanese folktale of Urashima Tarou, since Urashima Tarou's image was carved on the weapon he's based on.
  • Friend to All Living Things: After Kiwame training, he expresses the desire to be friends with anybody he meets, this including both dragons and tigers. He even considers making friends with the enemies.
  • Glacier Waif: Barring his fondness for turtles, you wouldn't expect a character like him to have the highest defense but lowest speed out of the wakizashis.
  • The Glomp: He's implied to be doing this to Nagasone in their Sparring interaction.
    Urashima: Nagasone-ni~cha~n!
Nagasone: He-hey. Don't dangle like that.
  • Keet: Very hyperactive and talkative. When left alone for awhile, he hates how boring it is and asks if he can go outside to play.
  • Love at First Sight: In the manga anthology Danshi Makuaigeki, he falls in love with Midare at first sight without realizing that Midare is actually a guy.
  • Motor Mouth: Some of his lines are delivered very quickly, in keeping with his energetic nature.
  • Panthera Awesome: A spiritual tiger can be seen by Urashima's side in his Kiwame awakened sprite.
  • Rags to Riches: He's more modest about his status as a Kotetsu because of his humbler origins. He's one of the first "Kotetsu" swords made by his smith, who was poor and ran a scrap-metal shop at the time. Now, he's a privately owned treasure.
  • Rare Random Drop: For a long time, he was only available as a rare drop after fighting Kebiishi.
  • Shoulder Pet: Wears his pet turtle Kamekichi on his shoulder.
  • This Cannot Be!: His line if he's destroyed.
    "What...is this...?"

Urashima (Musical)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_1778.jpeg
Urashima as he appears in Musical Touken Ranbu. He debuted in the play Shizuka no Umi no Paraiso.
  • Birds of a Feather: Bonds with Hyuuga Masamune due to their excitable and childlike personalities among their comparatively more lax peers.
  • Break the Cutie: He's always kind and just wants everyone to be happy, so watching him go through emotional hell as the truth about the mission he's been sent on in Paraiso is slowly unraveled is especially painful.
  • Broken Tears: Twice in the musical Paraiso. The first time is when Emosaku reveals that everyone they recruited for the Shimabara Rebellion will be slaughtered if they don’t surrender to the shogunate, which makes him realize what his team's true mission is: to ensure that everyone dies as they have historically. He breaks down again after witnessing the brothers he befriended being brutally stabbed to death while unable to intervene.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Impersonates Amakusa Shirou after he is killed prematurely to help recruit more people to the rebel side in Shimabara, alongside Tsurumaru and Hyuuga. Unlike Tsurumaru and Hyuuga, though, his impersonation doesn't happen onscreen.
  • Interspecies Friendship: He is a Touken Danshi who befriends two human boys while on a mission in the musical. Naturally, this ends badly, as the older brother is brutally killed in front of him, as he was meant to die historically, and while the younger brother is saved, Urashima is unlikely to ever see him again.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Not quite a newly manifested sword by the time the audience meets him, but he knows next to nothing about the Shimabara Rebellion when he's assigned to the mission by Tsurumaru Kuninaga and asks questions in place of the audience.
     144 – Kotegiri Gou (篭手切江)

"I'm Kotegiri Gou, a wakizashi crafted by Gou no Yoshihiro. Please take care of me from now on."

A wakizashi forged by the swordsmith Gou no Yoshihiro of the Ecchuu Province. It passed frequently between the Inaba and Hosokawa clans. He has a strong penchant for being an assistant and he behaves smartly towards his Master. Dressing others in clothes is his specialty, and he will even help dress up his surroundings.

  • The Ace: In The Musical, he is skilled in writing scripts, directing, choreography, and creating elaborate clothes, including all of the costumes the Touken Danshi wear in their play in Gou on Stage.
  • Ambiguously Gay: His feelings for Buzen could easily be romantic. Along with standard Hero Worship, he seems oddly preoccupied with lying in his lap, and in the musical continuity he fantasizes about Buzen chasing him. He often acts flustered and shy around Buzen, and although he loves all the Gous, he clearly has some amount of favouritism reserved for his "Leader".
  • Ambiguous Situation: In the musical, most of the Gou's seem to have some involvement with Mikazuki Munechika because of the events of Tokyo Kokoro Oboe, with even Matsui, who has yet to interact with him onscreen, implying that Mikazuki has influenced him some way in Paraiso. However, whether Kotegiri has become involved with Mikazuki has yet to be clarified, with the only hint being Suishinshi Masahide's vague comment about their mission to him in Gou on Stage.
  • Agent Peacock: He's rather fixated on his appearance and doesn't like getting his clothes ruined or torn and has to fix them. However, unlike Kashuu, he doesn't mind being sent into battle or doing chores during Internal Affairs.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: As a wakizashi, he is physically the youngest and smallest of the Gous, appearing to be in his late teens as opposed to their early to mid-twenties in terms of age.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Amongst the Gou school, his signature colour is green, which is also the color of their school.
  • Commonality Connection: Defied in his Recollection with Kasen Kanesada. They're both Hosokawa swords who love to sing and dance, which Kasen tries to bond with him over, but he quickly corrects him that he prefers to sing and dance in more modern styles, compared to Kasen who has a preference for traditional style.
  • Distinguishing Mark: He has two moles under his right eye.
  • Hero Worship: Greatly loves and admires Buzen, referring to him as "Leader" and treating him as the leader of the idol group that he forms with the Gous despite Kotegiri arguably being better suited for the role.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He wears half of a jacket/arm guard combination on his left arm.
  • The Fashionista: He has good taste in fashion and enjoys dressing up others and his surroundings.
  • The Idealist: No amount of hardship will make him give up on his dreams, whether it's to be on the stage, or to save someone's life. Demonstrated best in the musicals where he refuses to let his senpai, a Gou sword that had been corrupted by the HRA, be broken, and instead fights to bring him back to sanity against all advice.
  • Identical Stranger: The live-action film introduces Kurikara Gou, a tantou who looks exactly like Kotegiri but without glasses.
  • Idol Singer: What he aspires to be. He enjoys dancing and singing in a modern style and dreams of showing off his skills on stage. According to him, he says it's part of a Tsukumogami and Gou sword's life style as seen in his recollection with Kasen and Hirano, although it's more the life style he roped the Gou's into rather than what they're like by default. Eventually he gets his wish as a member of the sixth musical's cast, as their "battles" in the 21st century mostly consist of idol work.
  • Last Request: If he gets destroyed.
"Too bad... To break... before I get to stand on the stage..."
  • Odd Friendship: Since the musical Kishou Hongi, he has formed a friendship with Otegine and drags him around to practice being idols with him, despite Otegine's reluctance.
  • Skewed Priorities: He cares far more about his clothes being ruined than his grave injuries.
  • Stepford Smiler: Revealed to be one in his Recollection with Tomita Gou after Tomita pierces through his facade. He presents himself as being cheerful and hardworking, and while it does have some basis in reality, he is also deeply insecure about the uncertain existences of the Gou school swords, as their existences as swords forged by Gou no Yoshihiro are purely defined by the authorities who appraised their value due to how many were left unsigned by him. This is also revealed to be the reason why he pushes so hard for the Gou school swords to become pseudo-idols who can sing and dance on stage, so that their existences can become "stronger" and recognized, the way that idols are when they gain fanbases.

     168 – Hizen Tadahiro (肥前忠広)

"Hey, stop staring at me. ...Hizen Tadahiro. I'm a manslayer sword. So who do I have to slay?"

A wakizashi which once belonged to the Sakamoto household but was later wielded by one of the Four Manslayers of Bakumatsu, Okada Izo.

  • Broken Tears: He breaks down after being forced to kill his former master in Kousui.
  • Butt-Monkey: A light example in Kousui, at least at first, as he is ignored and disrespected for the majority of the play. Then he's forced to Mercy Kill his former master, becoming the first sword in the musical to not be relieved of this responsibility by having someone else do the deed for him.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The right side of his clothes has his right sleeve are torn in small holes awhile the other left side is undamaged.
  • Guest Fighter: The reason why you're only allowed to bring at most 5 swords into his event – he needs a spot to tag along.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • For as much as he talks about killing people, his idle voice-line reveals that it is not something he wants to do, but rather something he has been forced to do because of his former master's reputation. If broken, he seems relieved that he no longer needs to kill anyone.
    • If you go to the next node with a severely damaged sword, he seems concerned about them.
Hey, at this rate that guy will die.
  • Mercy Kill: He kills a zombified version of his former master in the musical.
  • Only Sane Man: He's the only one with enough common sense among Yamanbagiri and Ookanehira's teams to immediately know that simply waiting to see what happens won't help resolve the timeline's problems. Unfortunately, his solution of killing people who were historically meant to die doesn't help to resolve anything since the timeline was doomed from the start due to a mistake Ookanehira's team made.
  • Power Trio: With Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki and Nankaitarou Chouson as of the event Special Investigation: Bunkyuu Tohasan.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes shown that he's a dangerous man-slayer sword.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to his "sensei" Chouson's Blue.
  • Tsundere: In Kousui:
    • He leaves Yamanbagiri Kunihiro fairly early in the story out of frustration and boredom, but writes him several letters updating him on his journey, which Yamanbagiri either tears up or uses as paper for his umbrellas out of spite. Hizen reacts with hurt feelings every time this happens (despite not physically being present for it) and ends his last letter demanding that Yamanbagiri respond to him.
    • He later seeks out the other Touken Danshi soon after leaving Yamanbagiri, which Ookanehira playfully accuses him of doing because he's actually lonely. He vehemently denies this, only making his words seem true.
  • Useless Accessory: Wears bandages around his neck for seemingly no reason. When asked about them by the Saniwa, he dismisses it as not mattering.
  • Younger Than They Look: Played With; He's a Touken Danshi, which means he's several hundred years older than he appears, despite looking like a young adult in the browser game. On the other hand, he is treated like a kid by the other characters in the musical, and he comes across as bratty in some scenes, implying that he is physically and mentally supposed to be younger.

"Haisai~ I'm Chiganemaru. I'm the younger brother of my big elder brother and little elder brother — you know, the guys who are like "everything will be alright". Nice to meet you!"

One of the treasured swords introduced to the Ryukyu Kingdom. Smithed in Yamashiro, raised in Ryukyu. Although his mounting is made in the mainland, the hand guard and washers are the same as Chiyoganemaru's and thought to be attached in Ryukyu. While dancing like a bird, he uses Okinawan martial arts 'Tei'.

  • The Baby of the Bunch He's the youngest of the treasured swords of Okinawa, but looks older than Chatannakiri due to being a wakizashi.
  • Big Little Brother: He's the younger brother to Chatannakiri and the first confirmed case of a greater sword type's being the younger sibling to a smaller type. He even calls him "small big brother."
  • Chromatic Arrangement: The yellow to Chiyoganemaru's blue and Chatannakiri's pink.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Yellow, which makes up the majority of his color palette.
  • Curtains Match the Window: He has light gold hair that matches his eyes.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Uses a combination of his sword and karate to fight off Historical Revisionists.

With a golden inlay "Hanjin, Sanada Saemon's Property" written on the tang, he is the wakizashi of Sanada Saemon-no-suke Nobushige. After the death of Sanada Yukimura, the blade was put on sale at Mount Kouya, Kishu. The work of Uta Kunitsugu, he is also known with name "Hanjin". Along with Oochidori Jumonji Yari, they stand on the battlefield as the belongings of Sanada.

A wakizashi that is said to have been created by Hiromitsu in Soshu-den. It is one of the 35 hand chosen swords by the Uesugi family, and is said to Uesugi Kenshin's waistsword. He has a strong admiration of Ookurikara, who was also created by Hiromitsu. The sword, whose name means to ward off demons, sees many things in the darkness…
  • Aloof Ally: He serves under the Saniwa like any other, but he doesn't seem to give a damn about anything and barely makes an effort to say more than 5 words to them. He's even more aloof in his Recollection with Kenshin, who carries the conversation while he makes disinterested noises in response.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He's one of the few Touken Danshi to have brown skin.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats, thanks to the legend from which his name derives in which a priest used his sword to drive off a Kasha Youkai, which are said to be cats spirits. In his default sprite, he wears a cat sprite mask and a hoodie with cat ears. The cat ear hoodie also returns for his Uchiban outfit.
  • Big Brother Worship: While it's unclear if he views Ookurikara as a brother, they're both are Hiromitsu school swords and he looks up to him, calling him the coolest in their Recollection.
  • Bragging Rights Reward: He can only be unlocked by completing 500 missions on the Iko battlefield, one of the most challenging maps in the game that even players with level 99 Touken Danshi struggle to clear. Compared to how much the player will struggle to get him, he's not particularly noteworthy as a unit, as he's only a Medium rarity sword with average stats save for the fact that he's quite speedy.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Downplayed; The gold parts of his hair match the color of his eyes.
  • Custom Uniform: Similarly to Ookurikara, his outfit looks like a modified school uniform with orange and gold incorporated into the color scheme.
  • Cute Little Fangs: To tie into his cat motif, he has fangs.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not usually, but he has a moment if the player tries to proceed in battle with a severely injured Touken Danshi.
"I hope those eyes of yours aren't just for decoration."
  • In the Hood: As the "Watchman" at the entrance of the abandoned world, he wears a hood and a mask to obscure his identity. He takes these off after the player becomes familiar with him, however.
  • Empathy Pet: The Kasha on his shoulder emotes in the same way he does, even getting angry and attacking when he enters Shinken Hissatsu.
  • Familiar: The Kasha on his shoulder is implied to be this, but unlike most familiars, his Kiwame send-off line implies that he is not a willing host for it.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • He briefly breaks from his deadpan speech when interacting with Ookurikara.
    • He loses some of his cool in battle, especially entering Shinken Hissatsu.
    • If he's the attendant Touken Danshi and the player returns after a long absence, he gets spooked by their sudden appearance.
  • Parrot Pet Position: He carries around a Kasha on his shoulder.
  • The Quiet One: He has very little to say and speaks in a deadpan tone, with most of his voice lines being extremely brief.
  • The Stoic: He speaks in a perpetually disinterested tone and only really emotes when he's in battle.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Like Ookurikara, he is a Hiromitsu school sword, and the two of them look more like relatives than any other pair of Touken Danshi in the game thanks to their multicolored dark brown hair, golden eyes, and brown complexion.
