Playable

    Eins
A nine-year old girl and the main protagonist. She is off to visit her grandmother when she gets swept into the chaos of the demon invasion, and is rescued by Ains. She is tasked by her new mentor to find three items she needs.
  • Character Development: She goes from a normal, scared little girl who just wants to go home to a brave and determined Kid Hero who is willing to travel to another continent just to find out more about herself and the world around her.
  • Little Dead Riding Hood: She heavily resembles Little Red Riding Hood and is thrown into a world of danger where death by demons lies at every corner.
  • Little Red Fighting Hood: Not normally, but occasionally she's possessed by the Forbidden Book <Human> and becomes a powerful entity who can blow up an entire room effortlessly.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: The Black Demon-God is after her because she has some sort of power that can allow it to destroy the continent of Uldra. Said power is the Forbidden Book <Human>, which it wants to extract from her.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Whenever she gains red eyes, that means the Forbidden Book <Human> has taken over.
  • Red Riding Hood Replica: She looks the part- a cute little girl in a red hood- and is first established carrying a basket to see her grandma, who turns out to be the Big Bad in disguise. She is then rescued and spends the rest of the game becoming a heroine in her own right.
  • Reincarnation: Of the original Lady Eins, the heroine who killed the God of Nihility.

    Ains Milan
A white-haired demon girl and one of the Seven Emperors. She is immortal and unfathomably powerful. She rescues Eins from the Black Demon-God and asks for her help in finding three items she needs.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She calls Eins, the little girl whom she is protecting, "Einsie" ("Eins-chan" in the Japanese version).
  • Cool Big Sis: Eins starts to look up to her like a protective big sister, to the point of crying when she is briefly separated from her in the finale.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A white-haired demon girl with red eyes, but is on the side of humanity, fighting to protect them from demons.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: She's the only character who is semi-regularly Addressing the Player, doing things like asking what kind of person you are, altering her text box sprite so her scythe isn't blocking the player's view, and personally trying to explain to the player some aspects of the titular Three Forbidden Books.
  • Invincible Hero: Due to her immortality and great strength, absolutely nothing comes even close to killing her, except the Black Demon-God briefly. This is likely why the far more vulnerable and inexperienced Eins serves as the actual protagonist. In the non-bad endings, this is why Eins is not worried about her staying in the abyss to fight Rhavos and reasons that she is probably fine.
  • Mentor Archetype: She trains and watches over Eins, tasking her with fetching three items she needs to defeat the Black Demon-God.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Played with. She seemingly gets killed by the Black Demon-God, but she's able to bring herself back due to storing her heart somewhere, and helps Eins escape, but nevertheless stays behind and is separated from her, ensuring that Eins will need to take care of herself from now on.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While not evil, she is very dangerous to demons, and her red eyes accentuate this.
  • Really 700 Years Old: According to the Characters file in the download, her age is in the four digits despite looking like a teen/young adult.

    Dakt Sheny
A demon-slaying mercenary who answered the Hassinghador Kingdom's request for mercenaries to hunt down the wolves plaguing the forest. She befriends Eins in the endgame and promises to protect her as best she can.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She can have two of these depending on your choices.
    • In the battle against the Red-Haired Man, she can encounter the Hero and his harem about to be eaten by spiders, with the Hero about to sacrifice himself so his harem can survive. If she chooses to rush for the window, she'll jump in and fend them off before the Red-Haired Man kills them, saving the Hero and his harem.
    • In the Normal and Good ends, she drives her sword into the Black Demon-God's wrist just before it can kill Eins.
  • Friend to All Children: According to her profile in the Characters file, which describes her as "very kind to children, and even self-sacrificing, especially to 'good' children". She demonstrates this in-game by swearing to protect the 9-year-old Eins from the demons in the forest and doing everything in her power to accomplish this goal.
  • Spider-Sense: Her "bad feelings" are very accurate at predicting when something horrible is about to happen.

Antagonists

    Rahd, the Black Demon-God
A powerful demon leader and the antagonist of EINS. It was driven out of the underworld by the Seven Emperors and wants to kill them all as revenge for the humiliation it suffered. It gained control of the Tenebris and some of its power, but wants the rest of it, and is chasing after Eins to that end.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the Bad End, it kills Eins and, despite nearly having been defeated, is presumably able to recover and continue its plot to destroy Uldra.
  • Big Bad: It is the leader of the demons assaulting the Uldra continent and aims to capture Eins as part of its plan to destroy the continent and take revenge on the Seven Emperors for defeating it prior.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The final battle appears to be between it and the duo of Ains and Eins, but afterwards Rhavos shows up and becomes the actual final boss while the Tenebris takes care of the Demon-God.
  • I Lied: It made a deal with Eins' Mother to let Eins live a normal life in exchange for being allowed to extract the Forbidden Book <Human> from her. Once it finally gets around to doing this, it immediately goes back on the deal by trying to kill Eins while mentally mocking the deal maker for thinking it would actually follow through on it.
  • It Amused Me: When the Tenebris asks why it continues to pursue Eins even after getting the Forbidden Book from ber and thus having no more use for her, it says that it is doing so for fun.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Its name is Rahd, which can be revealed as early as after the tutorial battle, but everyone calls it the Black Demon-God.
  • Maou the Demon King: A traditional Big Bad example. It leads the demon army in attacking the Uldra continent and wants to capture Eins for its evil plans. It also uses the power of the Tenebris to spread negative energy that causes the wolves of the region to go berserk.
  • Near-Villain Victory: In the non-bad ends, it successfully kidnaps Eins, extracts the Forbidden Book <Human> from her, and uses its power to (seemingly) kill Ains, but just when it looks like there is no hope, the Tenebris breaks free from its control and takes it down, Ains comes back and helps Eins escape, and Dakt finishes off the weakened Demon-God for good.
  • No Biological Sex: Suggested, by the fact that it is consistently referred to with "it" and the "singular they".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: This evil demon god has two bright red eyes to go with its pitch-black body.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When the Tenebris starts fighting back and wounding it, it starts freaking out. Then, in the non-Bad endings, it pulls a This Cannot Be! when Dakt saves Eins and kills it for good.
  • Warmup Boss: It serves as the first boss in the prologue section.

    The Red-Haired Man
A mysterious mercenary infamous for killing his companions and several innocents. He also answered the call to exterminate the wolves, but is more preoccupied with robbing the other mercenaries involved.
  • Arc Villain: He becomes the antagonist of the Forest section of the game when he starts killing the other mercenaries and tries to go after Dakt and Eins as well.
  • Blood Knight: He's outright described in the Character file as a "battle maniac" who "enjoys fighting the strong in particularly hazardous terrain", and in-game is very keen to fight Dakt to the death.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He is infamous for killing his companions in any mission they take so he can get at their loot. In the game itself, he goes with an army of mercenaries to take care of some wolves in the forest, then kills almost all of them.
  • Comedic Lolicon: In one of the Animated Actors bonus scenarios, he is depicted as breaking character in order to lust over Eins and try to take her home with him. It's played for very Black Comedy and emphasizes how awful he is.
  • Climax Boss: His fight in the Forest is clearly not the final battle, but it's an epic clash between two powerful mercenaries with lots of banter and events. The outcome of the fight also determines the ending.
  • The Dreaded: He is infamous for how many mercenaries and companions he's killed.
  • Karma Houdini: By the end of the game, either he has succeed in killing Dakt, or she spares him after defeating him.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: The character of the Red-Haired Man is a psychotic mercenary who kills other mercenaries to steal their stuff. In one of the Animated Actors bonus scenarios, his actor is a nice man who tries to help Eins' actress when she forgets her lines, and gives her words of encouragement when she fails.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Whatever his actual name is, he's only known as the Red-Haired Man or some variant.
  • Open-Ended Boss Battle: You have to make it to the end and pick the correct options to advance, but he can still end up killing Dakt if she doesn't have the Survival Knife, which leads to the Bad End.
  • Slasher Smile: Frequently whips these out, usually when he is either about to betray and kill someone or thinking about betraying and killing someone.
  • Team Killer: He is infamous for killing his fellow mercenaries to steal their loot. In the actual game, he joins a large party of mercenaries on a mission to fight off wolves attacking the forest, and eventually goes on yet another killing spree- by the end, only a few survivors are left.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In the Bad End, him successfully killing Dakt leads to her not being around to save Eins from the Black Demon-God and being killed, allowing the Black Demon-God to accomplish his plan and presumably bringing about the destruction of the continent.

    The Tenebris (Unmarked Spoilers
The entity that the Black Demon-God has gained control of.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Thanks to the Magicite, it is able to regain its consciousness and turn on the Black Demon-God.
  • Taking You with Me: In the endgame, it pulls this on the Black Demon-God in order to allow Eins to escape. It fails, but it does weaken the Demon-God just enough for Dakt to finish it off if she's still alive.
  • Was Once a Man: It used to be a human who served Eins' original incarnation, Lady Eins, until it somehow became the Tenebris.

Minor Characters

Humans

    Eins' Mom
The mother of Eins.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Initally, she appears to be the typical mother character who wakes up the hero and then vanishes from the plot. Then Ains confronts her and it turns out that she made a deal with the Black Demon-God to keep Eins safe, stole the magicite Ains needs, and is one of the last bosses in the game.

    Eins' Grandmother
The grandmother of Eins.

    The Hero (Glenn Sierra)
The most famous hero in Hassinghador and the Uldra continent.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He can potentially sacrifice himself to serve as a distraction for the spiders so his three lovers can escape, unless Dakt pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • Hero of Another Story: He is the most famous hero in all of Uldra and fits the archetype of the hero in a Standard Japanese Fantasy Setting who fights the Demon Lord, but he only shows up occasionally and does not play any role in the main story.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His name is seen in a bag he dropped at some point, but he is always called the Hero.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He offers himself to the spiders to serve as a distraction while his lovers try to open the door behind them and escape, but even if he pulls it off, the door fails to open and the spiders are only taken care of by the Red-Haired Man.

    The Hero’s Harem
A trio of women in a polygamous relationship with the Hero.
  • No Name Given: Unlike the Hero himself, who has his name revealed in an optional conversation, these three are only referred to by descriptors.
  • Polyamory: The three of them are described as the hero’s harem and all seem to be in a relationship with him.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Due to being very minor characters, they are only defined as being the hero’s haremettes.

Demons and Monsters

    God of Nihility
A malevolent God that once ruled the world and oppressed humanity. It has long since been slain by a hero of old, but its followers remain.
  • God of Evil: Presumably, judging from its title and it being the leader of the demons while it was alive.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: It ruled over the demons and all humanity until it was slain by Lady Eins. The Black-Demon God, the Big Bad, was one of its servants.
  • Posthumous Character: It was killed by Lady Eins long before the start of the story.

    Sandworm
A giant worm that lies in the ruins of Photrest Desert.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: It chases after Eins, who must run down the hallway to avoid it.
  • Sand Worm: A typical example who lies in the Photrest Ruins and chases down Eins.
  • Villainous Rescue: It unintentionally saves Eins from the Giant Skeleton by eating it.
  • Superboss: The Demonic Worm, a version of it that can be accessed after beating the Photrest Desert. It works the same way as the first battle in that Eins needs to run down a hallway to escape it, but this time the hallway is filled with much more obstacles and the Worm is faster.

    Skeletons
Living skeletons who haunt the bottom of the Photrest Ruins.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: It chases down Eins at the bottom of the Photrest Ruins through a whole maze of rooms.
  • Dem Bones: They are living skeletons who haunt the Photrest Ruins and chase Eins whenever she comes near.
  • King Mook: The Giant Skeleton is a more massive version of the skeletons who has no special skills.
  • Puzzle Boss: Unlike the Sandworm, outrunning it is not as simple as going in one direction, because you have to navigate a maze with dead ends, locked doors, and obstacles.

    Manifested Evil Spirits
Until death... Watch you... Until death... Torment you... Make you suffer...

A trio of pale white humanoid spirits who haunt the Deserted Island laboratory.

  • Terse Talker: They speak only in short sentence fragments.
  • Wolfpack Boss: They are a trio of spirits that chase after Eins at many points.

    Uturo
A demon who haunts the Deserted Island {Back} and was used as a garbage disposal.
  • Extreme Omnivore: The researchers used it as a garbage disposal because it would eat basically everything.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: If you approach it as Ains, she will instantly kill it.

    Rhavos (Unmarked Spoilers
A fellow Demon-God who appears as the final boss to chase down Eins.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: It chases Eins down three corridors.
  • Expy: Of Lavos. Both are giant parasite from another world that has no lines beyond roaring, it has a similar appearance, and even its name is two letters away from Lavos and is pronounced similarly (or about the same in Japanese Ranguage).
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: The actual final boss is not the Black Demon-God, but a fellow Demon-God who is only foreshadowed in a single line beforehand.
  • Uncertain Doom: The last we see if it is when Ains stays behind to presumably fight it. Given how much of an Invincible Hero Ains is, it is ambiguous if Rhavos will survive the encounter.
