- Speaks Fluent Animal: Frankie, as well as all of the humans in this show, fall into this category, but only in the case of the Zhus.

Frankie (originally named Polly) is the main, and titular, character of the show. She lives in Anytown with her mom, dad, and four talking hamsters.
- Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: Frankie's left glenohumeral joint at start of "Story Book It."
- All There in the Manual: Frankie's age being 8 years old was only confirmed in the Vimeo interview for the series, revealed by a writer of the series.
- Frankie's last name was also this until the show mentioned it (which mostly happens when Madge mentions it).
- Alliterative Name: Her old name, Polly Pamplemousse.
- Beehive Hairdo: Frankie tries wearing one in "Hairible Mistake."
- Canon Foreigner: Frankie was newly created for the series which ignores Katie, Pipsqueak's owner who was featured in the Quest for Zhu film.

- Although it's not revealed what grade Frankie's in, it's confirmed that she is 8-years-old.

- Pirate Girl: Frankie as "Girl Beard" in "Zhuper Zhide Kicks."
- Scary Stinging Swarm: Frankie gets chased and stung by a swarm of bees in "If Wishes Were Rainbows."

- Sudden Name Change: Originally named Polly, her name was changed to Frankie after the 7th episode of the series.

Pipsqueak is the first Zhu Zhu, and is the unofficial leader of the Zhus. She was Frankie's first hamster, and would do anything to make her happy.

- And Call Him "George": In "Zhurassic Park," tomboy Pipsqueak clearly Does Not Know His Own Strength when giving Cave Frankie a Bear Hug as she is clearly being crushed by her.
- Cheerful Child: Frankie aside, Pipsqueak is the most cheerful of the Zhus.

Num Nums is the third Zhu Zhu, and is the most sensitive. She is a careful thinker.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: In the original toys and the Quest for Zhu movie, her fur was light grey. Here, it's lavender.
- Affectionate Nickname: Nums, Nummers
- Beware the Nice Ones:
- In "Home Run Hamsters", Num Nums shows her Berserk Button when Mr. Kerdle calls the Zhus 'runts' and beats him up once he takes it too far.
Mr. Kerdle: You runts are going down.Num Nums: What... did you call us?!Pipsqueak: You shouldn't have said that...Chunk: Bad move, mop man.Mr. Squiggles: My theory is that this will add up to trouble for you, sir.Num Nums: Nobody calls us... runts!- In "The Trashing of Zhuper Girl", Num Nums almost attacks the TV once Madge mocks and insults the Zhus.

Ellen Pamplemousse is Frankie's mom.
- Action Mom: beyond being a plumber, she can fix race cars and juggle 3 plungers inna clown nose to entertain swing girl.
- Seduction-Proof Marriage: So far we know with Ellen. She swoons when Sergio compliments her in "Hairible Mistake" but she doesn't follow up.
- Unnamed Parent: Referred to as Mom up until Fur-Vivor, when Num Nums refers to her as Ellen. From then on her name is used frequently.
- Wrench Wench: even uses a giant one as a musical instrument in "How Zhu Get Ahead in Advertising"

Stanley Pamplemousse is Frankie's dad.

All other episodes simply refer to him as "Dad", even in the CC and in episodes that refer to Ellen by her real name, in both dialogue and CC.

Mr. Kerdle is the grumpy school janitor that works at Frankie's school.

Cindy and Mindy Gelato are twins and Frankie's friends.
- Coordinated Clothes: Mindy and Cindy mostly dress the same. Subtle differences in color schemes serve to distinguish them.
- Identical Twin ID Tag: Mindy has a white ice cream cone, yellow backpack, blue glasses, white bracelet, and dark blue pants, while Cindy has a yellow ice cream cone (pink on shirt), green backpack, pink glasses, blue bracelet, and lighter blue pants.
- Meaningful Name: The Gelatos wear ice cream themed clothing.
- Sleepwalking: Cindy and Mindy are sleepwalkers, as revealed in "Zombie Sleep Over."
- Single-Minded Twins: No appreciable differences in the Gelato's behavior.

- Alpha Bitch: Revealed in "The Pumpkin Whisperers" that she does go to Frankie's school.
- Full-Name Basis: Madge regularly says "Frankie Pamplemousse" instead of just "Frankie" unlike most other characters.
- Lonely Rich Kid: She is quick to allow Frankie to spend time at her house when asked, even though they are enemies.
- Rich Bitch: plans to buy all instruments and hide them so nobody in world can enjoy music.
- Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: In "The Pumpkin Whisperers," she fails to notice she is growing a red tomato and not an orange pumpkin until Frankie points it out.
- Right-Hand Cat: She has one named Princess Tickyboo.
Princess Tickyboo is Madge's pet cat.
