A forest gnome doctor. He is 399 years old, making him the oldest gnome in the forest.- All-Loving Hero: In one episode he even saves a baby troll, despite trolls being portrayed as Always Chaotic Evil.
- Blue Is Heroic: His shirt is blue.
- Combat Medic: He is a doctor, but it doesn't stop him to fight against trolls.
- Cool Old Guy: 399 years old and still having amazing adventures.
- Dub Name Change: In the Finnish dub his name is changed to Taavi, which is the translation of the original David name.
- Dub Personality Change: In the English dub David is a bit more stern about humans tendency to destruction of nature, while in the original Spanish dub he is more sad about it.
- Friend to All Living Things: Despite his old age, he loves playing with animals and is friends with them. Only avertions seems to be trolls and (bad) humans.
- Hammerspace: His tiny tool back on his belt.
- Kindly Vet: Most of David's patients are animals.
- The Medic: It's in his job description, given that he's a doctor.
- Nice Guy: And according to the original theme song "always in a good mood".
- Psychic Powers: All gnomes have some, but it is mostly limited to telepathy.
- Red Is Heroic: His pointy hat, which all gnomes have. Many of them also happens to come in colour red.
- Super Doc: David's treated his fellow gnomes, various forest animals and even humans. He's also dealt with everything from internal parasites to physical injuries to sicknesses.
- White Magician Girl: A Rare Male Example. David's magic is mostly for things like trickery and illusion, never for direct harm. His personality and medical knowledge otherwise mesh with this trope.
Lisa
Voiced by: Matilde Conesa (European Spanish), Dolores Muñoz Ledo (Latin American Spanish), Jane Woods (English), Kaija Kiiski (Finnish)
David's wife, also 399 years old.- Damsel out of Distress: In one episode, she gets kidnapped and imprisoned by the trolls but then tricks Holler into releasing her just as David arrives to try and save her. In an earlier episode, she's the one to actually save an imprisoned David and Swift from the trolls by tricking the latter into eating a soup mixed with sleeping drugs.
- Happily Married: She and David are nothing but loving and affectionate with each other.
- Never Mess with Granny: She's a very sweet old lady but has shown on several occasions to be just as capable as her husband, like when she saves him from the trolls.
- Together in Death: With David, once they pass on in the final episode and turn into trees.
- True Blue Femininity: Her hat and dress are blue.
Swift
Voiced by: Ramón Langa (European Spanish), Miguel Angel Sanroman (Latin American Spanish), Vlasta Vrána (English)
A fox friend of David's. Said to be fastest fox in the forest and he helps David to get all over to the world.- All Animals Are Dogs: He pretty much acts like a big friendly dog. He even barks and growls like a dog in some scenes. This probably makes sense as foxes are related to dogs.
- Cunning Like a Fox: Averted; he is a really sweet and kind fox.
- Dub Name Change: He is called Viuhu in the Finnish dub, which is kind of clumsy translation of the original Swift.
- Generation Xerox: Before him, David had another fox friend named Nimble and English dub implies that Swift is Nimble's kit.
- Red Is Heroic: A red fox who is heroic.
- Undying Loyalty: To David.
Holler
Voiced by: Paco Hernández (European Spanish, both shows), A.J. Henderson (English, original), Steve Krammer (English, sequel), Erkki Saarela (Finnish, original), Vesa Mäkelä (Finnish, sequel)
The leader of the main gang of trolls, who is the only one smart enough to be something of a threat.- Bald of Evil: He has a receding hairline.
- Dub Name Change: His name is Holly in the original Spanish dub but was changed to Holler in the English dub, likely because the former is a female name in English.
- Menace Decay: While moderately threatening in the original, in The Wisdom of the Gnomes, he's just as bumbling and childish as Pit, Pat, and Pot, and now they mock him and push him around just as much as he does them, while in the original, he held complete authority over them.
- Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: He isn't particularly smart or competent on his own merits, but compared to all the other trolls, his moderate wit and ambition make him their undisputed leader.
- Our Trolls Are Different: He and his kin are based on the Scandinavian version of trolls; hairy, short, and stocky, with big noses, pointy ears, and long tails.
- Villain-Based Franchise: He and his three goons return as major antagonists in The Wisdom of the Gnomes, being the main link between that series and the original (besides a flashback cameo by David and Lisa in the final episode).
