Portrayed by: Raffi Barsoumian

The leader of the Travelers who plots to undo a curse that was cast on them that prevents them from using traditional Spirit magic and settling down in one place. By undoing the curse, they undo every other magic cast by witches. He needs the mystical blood of the doppelgangers in order to do so. After his resurrection from the Other side, the supernatural purgatory begins to fall apart, putting the souls of all dead supernatural being in danger. Markos was born in the 5th century, making him the fourth oldest character in the TVD universe after Silas, Qetsiyah and Amara.

  • Back from the Dead: The Travelers main goal for most of season 5 is his resurrection, and they finally succeed via a mass sacrifice ritual that brings him back from the Other Side.
  • Bad Boss: He clearly doesn't value the lives of his fellow Travelers, and even gets his Number Two slow casually killed in a Dispel Magic experiment.
  • Big Bad: He's the main antagonist of the later half of season 5.
  • The Chessmaster: Claims to be the reason Stefan and Elena ended up together in the first place.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: His fate after his second death.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Is killed not in a fight or confrontation, but rather when Damon and Elena ram their car into the local bar he and his minions where in.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Markos resurrecting himself caused the Other Side to collapse and send numerous souls to oblivion. In the season five finale, after being killed by Damon and Elena, his soul is sent back to the Other Side and Lexi makes sure he is caught and destroyed in the same way as the numerous other souls he condemned to the same fate.
  • Time Abyss: Markos was born in the 5th century, making him the fourth oldest character in the TVD universe after Silas, Qetsiyah and Amara.
  • We Have Reserves: He is not above killing his own minions to experiment with the effects of Doppelgänger blood and destroying their previous bodies after they possessed new ones.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Inverted, he needs Stefan and Elena alive in order to harvest their blood, he still tortures them though.

    Sloan

Sloan

Portrayed By: Caitlin Mc Hugh

The de facto leader of the Travelers while Markos remains dead.

  • Deadpan Snarker: She actually demonstrates some sarcastic wit at some points
Sloan: ''[upon being asked if they're moving location]]' People don't call us travelers for our mileage points.
  • The Dragon: She acts as The Leader of the Travelers until Markos' resurrection.
  • The Heavy: She's the de facto leader of the Travelers and main antagonist for most of the latter half of season 5 until the resurrection of Big Bad Markos in the final episodes.
  • Iron Lady: She's pragmatic, tough and ruthless when leading the Travelers, not afraid of taking risks, sacrificing her people, or even putting her own life at risk.
  • Mauve Shirt: Despite her Nominal Importance and status as The Dragon and relative screentime, she doesn't get a lot of characterization and gets a rather anticlimatic death.
  • Mysterious Backer: She funded Wes Maxfield's research on vampires so she could further the goals of The Travelers.
  • Only One Name: Her only known name is Sloan and her full name is never given.
  • Slashed Throat: When she volunteers as a guinea pig for Markos vampirism experiment, he kills her to turn into a vampire by slashing her throat. Unfortunately for her, when Markos successfully uses his Dispel Magic to revert her vampirism, it causes her throat to unheal, and she dies again, this time for real.

    Julian

Julian

Portrayed By: Michael Trevino (Possessing Tyler)

A member of the Travelers who takes over Tyler's body as a passenger.

  • Body Surf: He takes over Tyler's body so he can be The Mole in the Mystic Fall gang. His real body is never even seen.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Matt and Jeremy torture him with wolfsbane in order to tell them Markos' plan and he actually quickly submits to the torture.
  • Happily Married: To Maria, to the point he gets into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge once he learns the Mystic Falls Gang caused her death.
  • Hero Killer: Ends up killing Stefan by ripping out his heart with his hybrid strength in revenge for Maria's death, though Stefan gets resurrected by the Season Finale.
  • Killed Off for Real: Once Markos kills his real body and uses the purification spell on Tyler body, Tyler's hybrid vampirism is "cured" which reverts Julian/Tyler to their previous dead state.
  • Killed Offscreen: His real body is destroyed off-screen by Markos to punish Julian for failing to control Tyler's body.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: After Julian saw how easily Markos disposes of Sloan, he became distrustful of Markos, which proved correct once Tyler became a problem and Markos sentenced Julian to death, killing his original body, which would get Julian Killed Off for Real since the purification spell Markos planned to cast would destroy Tyler's hybrid body. So Julian decided to throw his lot with Mystic Falls Gang and helped them get an upper hand on the Final Battle with Markos.
  • The Mole: Possesses Tyler so the Travelers can have a spy in the Mystic Falls gang.
  • Only One Name: His only known name is Julian and his full name is never given.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: His brief alliance with the Mystic Falls Gang is broken once he learns Maria died protecting Stefan and Elena, and he promptly attacks them and even kills Stefan.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: When Matt and Jeremy capture him while he's still possessing Tyler, he tries to guilt them into not harming him because he's habiting the body of their friend, but they just respond that while they don't plan on killing him, Tyler can take some pain and they proceed to torture Julian with wolfsbane.
  • Showing Off the New Body: He's clearly very happy with Tyler's hybrid body, even remarking to Markos that it feels amazing. Julian's wife Maria is also very appreciative of how attractive Tyler's body is.
  • You Have Failed Me: Gets sentenced to death by Markos due to failing to properly control Tyler's hybrid body.

Gregor

Portrayed By: Creator/Hans Obma & Zach Roerig (Possessing Matt)

A member of the Travelers and Nadia's lover and partner.

  • Battle Couple: Works alongside his lover Nadia while trying to capture Katherine from Damon and Elena.
  • Body Surf: Uses his traveler magic to become a Passenger in Matt's body, which allows him to live on after his real body has died... until Katherine uses the Traveler knife on him.
  • Fool for Love: While it's ambiguous if Nadia truly cared for him, he clearly was unwisely ok with her derailing The Traveler's plans for Silas and Katherine for her personal goals, which is especially egregious when said derailing involved her killing his original body and getting him stuck in Matt's. He later reveals his orders were to kill Katherine, but he seemingly didn't go through with them for Nadia's sake.
  • Killed Off for Real: First his real body is killed by Nadia so they can "prove" their loyalty to Silas, and he gets stuck possessing Matt's body. Then Katherine expels his spirit from Matt's body with the Traveler knife, which effectively kills him for good.
  • Force and Finesse: He's the finesse to Nadia's force, as he's a Squishy Mage traveler whose specific magic skills are needed for their plan, while Nadia is an old vampire who's unable to do magic but provides the raw power in their partnership.
  • Hiding Behind the Language Barrier: He always speaks in Czech when talking to Nadia.
  • Only One Name: His only known name is Gregor and his full name is never given.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: He's far less attractive than his Head-Turning Beauty vampire girlfriend Nadia. Unsurprisingly, he gets betrayed by her.

Have you not been listening to me? I have trust issues. I'm controlling and paranoid and a little crazy!... And that's working out just fine.

Qetsiyah (Ancient Greek: Kετσιυαη) was the oldest known ancestor of the Bennett bloodline, and a powerful Traveler witch. She was the first witch who discovered how to grant a person immortality. But then she was betrayed and tricked by her lover Silas, who wanted the immortality for himself and his true love, thus a vengeful Qetsiyah entombed him and created The Other Side to make sure he and his true love would never reunite. For the crime of creating immortality she was executed by The Travels, but even from The Other Side, she still plots her revenge.
