Benedict the Greninja
Rick's Kalos starter, and the first Pokémon introduced into X vs. Y Nuzlocke. Once it entered Rick's team, it never left.
- Casting a Shadow: Subverted. Despite being a Dark-type, Rick prefers to focus on its Water-type abilities.
- This may also have to do with Rick still not being confident in remembering how Dark is affected by other types.
- Fuuma Shuriken: His Water Shuriken attack is rather... large.
- Making a Splash: Rick's stock Water-type. He even boxes Nestlé just to avoid the overlap.
- Punny Name: A play on "eggs benedict".
- Stock Ninja Weaponry: Water Shuriken
- Technicolor Ninjas: Benedict may be a ninja, but he doesn't really blend in anywhere.
Drumstick the Pidgey
The first Pokémon Rick caught, Drumstick was eventually boxed when Rick's team started becoming overwhelmed with birds.
- Comedic Sociopathy: What John considers Rick's choice of name to be.
- Wind from Beneath My Wings
Hamburger the Beedrill
Rick's first catch to not be a scripted battle. While he doesn't see the same action or dedication that Benedict and Cadbury receive, he still shows up in clutch situations, particularly when facing areas that much of the team is weak to.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies
- Call-Back: Named as such for looking like a Moldorm, which was designed to look strangely like a hamburger in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
- Poisonous Person
- Recurring Character: He makes occasional appearances when there's a weak link in the party which needs replacing.
Cadbury the Diggersby
The other "veteran" on Rick's main team, Cadbury has (like Benedict) been a member of the team since the very beginning, and never left.
- Body Horror
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Punny Name: An unintentional example, Ben notices that her name contains the word "bury".
- The Grotesque
- Unusual Ears: In the form of ear-hands, which she uses to swim.
- Covers Always Lie: John does not in fact catch an Axew, despite his character art featuring one.
Knuckles the Chesnaught
John's Kalos starter and team captain. Like Benedict, it was never taken out of its respective team once added.
- Green Thumb
- Shout-Out: To SEGA's famous echidna
Quetzalcoatl the Pidgey
John's first catch, and an early favorite on his team.
- Battle Cry: A terrified gasp. Initially played for laughs, it takes a much darker turn when you realize it was just as scared to fight Mr. Mime and Machoke.
- Gang Up on the Human: Beaten mercilessly in a Double Battle with Mr. Mime and Machoke ultimately resulting in his death.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: In a scene that would leave both Rick and John permanently terrified of Double Battles, the team of Mr. Mime and Machoke beat both Quetzalcoatl and Tyrunt to death, using the same move on each.
- Wind from Beneath My Wings
Mothula the Vivillon
John's first unscripted catch.
- Shout-Out: To the boss from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Big Creepy-Crawlies
- Poisonous Person
Mips the Bunnelby
John's fourth Pokémon, Mips was somewhat ignored by him and boxed as soon as he had more than six Pokémon.
- Put on a Bus: Boxed since early in the game, he is coincidentally the only other survivor of John's original team aside from Knuckles.
- Shout-Out: To the catchable rabbits from Super Mario 64.
Kirby the Azurill
The final Pokémon in John's original team, giving him an early leg up in the overall series. She also became the first casualty of the Nuzlocke, being struck down by twin Headbutts from a pair of Furfrous.
- Making a Splash
- Shout-Out: To the eponymous pink puff.
