Main Heroines

June Alexandra Hespia/Stellar Ranger Dark Star
The titular main heroine of the series. After the tragic death of her parents in a car accident, she and her brother Julius moved to Solar City. A goth girl, June was born under Nemesis, the Black Sun, and as such possesses the Penumbra, a being of great power. She rallies the group to protect the city against those with evil intentions.

Initially had a crush on Senine, but got over it and is now dating Faye.

  • The Chosen One: She was the latest Stellar Ranger chosen to wield the Penumbra.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She is a goth with the code name Dark Star and has dark powers, but is the heroine of the series.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: She tends to ogle attractive people of both sexes. The first time Hal and Jordy appear, June stares at them making out.
“No, see that red-head frenching that skinny blue-haired guy? Those guys are...uh. Um. Wow." June began before her brain shut off.
  • Guy on Guy Is Hot: Downplayed as we don't see too much of it, but when she first sees Hal and Jordy making out, she stares for a while, and is supportive of the relationship. Notable in that she also thinks Girl on Girl Is Hot, being bisexual, and her Love Interest is a girl.
  • The Heroine: As the main Stellar Ranger and the leader of her group.
  • You Killed My Father: She becomes really pissed when she meets Vincent Day, the guy who killed her parents in a car accident, rejecting his offer to help by giving her the settlement money, and having to restrain her urge to kill him. She later turns her hatred to Lanessa de Vran Sie, the actual culprit of the crash, when she tauntingly reveals the truth.

Brunhilde Hildegard “Senine” Nokturne/Stellar Ranger Void
A fellow Stellar ranger and June's superior, though they tend to act more like friends and equals.
  • Accidental Truth: She is the only one who dislikes Lynneth and considers her evil, calling her names like 'the devil' and hellspawn, and saying that someone that clean with that good a reputation must be hiding something. She likely meant that in the sense of Lynneth secretly being a jerk or relatively mild Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, but she happens to be more-or-less correct about Lynneth being 'the devil', and completely correct about her being evil.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She is the local Dark Magical Girl and has the code name Void, but is one of the heroines.

    Augusta “Auggie” Levey/Stellar Ranger Volt
A Stellar Ranger and friend of June. She loves video games, especially of the strategy variety, and is a chess prodigy, so she tends to be the strategist of the group.
  • Closet Key: To Amber, who initially violently resisted the idea that she was gay.
  • Odd Couple: Nerdy strategist Auggie eventually becomes a couple with bitchy Cruel Cheerleader with a heart of gold Amber.
  • The Strategist: Any time the heroines carry out a plan of some sort, she is the one who made it. She also loves to play strategy games to hone her skills.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Amber.
Amber pulled away from Augusta and made a frustrated noise. “This, like, has to be a side effect of that combo move we did, or something.”
Auggie nodded, wiping her mouth. “Right. Because I’m not attracted to you.”
    “Same!”
“Aw, Amber, you should find yourself attractive.”
“Ugh!” Amber rolled her eyes. “You know what I meant. You are so annoying!”
    “You’re more annoying.”
    Then they started kissing again.

    Cassieopia “Cassie” Schumacher/Stellar Ranger Vital
A Stellar Ranger and friend of June. She has the power over life, in contrast to her sister Gemini who has the power of death.

    Faye Burrey
A member of the cheerleader squad and June's eventual girlfriend. Bubbly and optimistic, she always wants to help June whenever she can.
  • Badass Adorable: Faye, especially.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Faye again - being both a bubbly cheerleader and a chimera make her this trope to a T.
  • The Pollyanna: She is always optimistic and inspires others to be the same. Even when Series Three reaches the Darkest Hour and June crosses the Despair Event Horizon, Faye doesn't lose hope and tries to cheer June up.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: She is ultimately able to defeat the Anra twins by simply convincing one of them (Vanra) to stop her plan to release her mother, pleading that their mother does not truly care about them.

    Amber Septus
A cheerleader and the local bully.
  • Alpha Bitch: Initially this, as a cheerleader who wants to become the captain and bullies Faye, her rival in this regard, for being gay. She grows out of it.
  • Armoured Closet Gay: Amber, for a while, bullies Faye for being a lesbian and rejects all evidence of being one herself. It's only when she starts bonding with Auggie that she comes to terms with her sexuality.
  • Cruel Cheerleader: Starts out like this; a homophobe who despises Faye for being a lesbian on the team and conspires to kick her out. Character Development turns her into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Hidden Depths: Amber behaves like the typical Alpha Bitch cheerleader in public, but is secretly a Wrench Wench.
The cheerleader looked at herself again in the mirror. So many secrets in her life, what could one more hurt? So many things made her not who she wanted to be. She was not a vapid airhead. She was not nearly as mean as she tried to be. Truth be told, she cared more about cars than she did boys or music or any other things her peers cared about. The thought of being a freak, of being ostracized, however, was deeper than the desire to be herself.
  • Like Is, Like, a Comma: She talks like this:
"...and, like, I don't see why we should have her, like, around her, like, gaying everything up." Amber said. “Like, Val and Beth both agree? She needs to, like, go. Now.”
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She turns out to be this. When she makes Faye cry by demanding to be the cheer captain's successor in her place, Amber actually hugs her and sincerely apologizes. From that point onward, she becomes a main cast member and Stellar Ranger dedicated to helping save the world. June even lampshades it; when Janice asks if any of her team is a jerk, she names Amber, but says that "she’s learning, and she’s in the ‘our jerk’ phase."
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Auggie.
  • Wrench Wench: She is stated to care more about cars than "boys or music or any other things her peers cared about."

    Avril
A homeless girl introduced in the epilogue chapter of Series One who encountered and escaped the Puppetrix. She joins the Stellar Rangers, specifically June's team.
  • The Sixth Ranger: She only joins the rangers at the very end of Series One, but becomes a regular member of the team.

Solar City Junior High Staff

    Mr. Novias Vember
The leader of the local Stellar Rangers. He is a sagely man who looks out for June and the others.
  • The Mentor: He teaches June and the others the ropes about being a ranger.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: It takes until near the end of Series Two, but he winds up killed by Lanessa.
  • My Greatest Failure: He resents himself for allowing Lori, his wife, to grow as unstable holding the Penumbra as she did, ultimately resulting in the death of her and everyone else in Sun Springs. He is driven to mentor June, the new holder of the Penumbra, in part to ensure she doesn't turn out like Lori did, which he admits is his greatest fear.

    Leah Vember
Novias' daughter who helps him manage the school.

Shining Stars

    Kara May
The lead singer of the Shining Stars.
  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: According to Janice, she used to be nicer before becoming a famous idol singer.
“You know that movie thing, where a person’s really nice, and then they get famous, and then they’re a horrible person?”
    June winced. “Kara?”
“Kara. She used to be nice, before Ms. Kerberus had this showbiz idea, back when we were starting out. Which, I say it like it was a long time but it was last year.” Janice sighed. “And Kara went from wallflower to lead girl, cause she’s got the best voice.”
  • Green-Eyed Monster: While not evil, she does initially have a less-than-perfect relationship with June, who was chosen to wield the Penumbra instead of her. It subsides when June explains how It Sucks to Be the Chosen One.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She acts like a haughty celebrity to cover up her insecurities at not having been chosen to wield the Penumbra, as well as suffering from depression.
I’m one of the best out there. I learned faster, I worked harder, and I fought better than everyone else! And you...you aren’t even in good shape and suddenly, everywhere we go, every group of Rangers we meet, everyone is talking about the girl who has Penumbra. How powerful and dangerous she is.

    Destiny March
The lead guitarist of the Shining Stars.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Downplayed, as she doesn't actually die, but when she is mortally wounded by the Anras (and later taken by Dr. Lament), it serves as the beginning of the Darkest Hour.

    Kismet March
The bass player of the Shining Stars.

    Veracity Jones
The blind keyboard player of the Shining Stars.
  • Blind Musician: She is blind and plays the keyboard in the Shining Stars idol group.
  • Blind Seer: She is blind and can see the future using tarot cards.

  • The Dragon: Becomes one to the Puupetrix thanks to her Mind Control.

    Vincent Day
The man who was driving the car that killed June's parents.
  • The Atoner: He genuinely feels horrible for accidentally killing June's parents and tries to give her the money he got from a settlement. She rejects him.
  • Frame-Up: He drove the car that killed June's parents, but it was actually Lanessa who sabotaged the breaks and left him to take the blame.
  • Redemption Rejection: He tries to atone for killing June's parents in a car accident by giving her the settlement money, but she considers it 'blood money' and
  • Unwitting Pawn: Turns out Lanessa deliberately sabotaged the breaks to make him crash and kill June's parents.

Hollow Heart Barony

    General
The antagonist faction of Series One: Hollow Hearts. They are an army of alien beings under Baron Stellos that have taken many star hearts throughout the galaxy, and Earth is thier next target.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: They are an empire of aliens that launch an invasion of Earth to steal everyone's star hearts for themselves.
  • Antagonist Title: Series One is called Hollow Hearts.
  • The Empire: They are basically this, as a powerful army that has conquered entire planets, though they tend to slaughter their conquered people and steal their star hearts rather than rule over them.
  • Light Is Not Good: Their uniforms are bright red and gold, and their insignia is a red-and-gold heart. They also tend to have light-based powers. They are also The Empire carrying out an Alien Invasion of Earth.

  • Starter Villain: For the series as a whole, they are the first enemy faction that the rangers fight.

Leadership (spoilers)

    Baron Stellos
My loyal subjects! I, Baron Stellos, have declared Solar City to be my new source for my collection. And now, my Hollow Heart Army, let the gathering commence.

The supreme leader of the Hollow Heart Army and the antagonist of Series One: Hollow Hearts. He is an alien overlord who wants the star hearts of Solar City for his collection that adorns the walls.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He is a Baron and the Evil Overlord of the Hollow Heart Army.
  • Bad Boss: He forces his minions to give their star hearts to him, allowing him to kill them at any moment, and treats them as disposable tools for his conquest. He also frequently subjects Finneous to physical abuse and calls him useless.
  • Big Bad: Of Series One: Hollow Hearts, as the ruler of the Hollow Heart Army who desires to conquer Solar City and steal everyone's star hearts for himself. Or so it seems, but Kilaua/Lanessa is using him as her puppet.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: For most of Series One, he is built up as the main villain, the Evil Overlord who June needs to defeat to save the world. Then he is actually beaten, and Kilaua reveals to him that he was her pawn all along. While he is technically the Final Boss, the heroines still have to fight the Puppetrix in the epilogue chapter.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He may be a ruthless Galactic Conqueror, but he does truly love Kilaua. Not only was he motivated to turn evil by her murder, but when the rangers start insulting her, he becomes furious.
  • Evil Overlord: He rules the Hollow Hearts and through them conquers cities and planets, so that the star hearts of the populace may be added to his collection.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once a Stellar Ranger who protected the Million Baronies from harm and evil. Then his beloved, Kilaua, was (seemingly) killed by the Savage Stars, and he turned to conquering worlds and stealing star hearts in memory of his beloved. Auggie outright refers to him as this by name.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He puts on an air of being a polite aristocrat, especially when speaking to Prince Hal, but can barely restrain his malice, which seeps through his voice.
  • Final Boss: Of Series One.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: He turned to evil because of the death of his love, Kilaua, but when hearing this from Mr. Vember, Senine remains unsympathetic and still despises Stellos, considering him merely a monster who did good things.
“No.” Senine stood. “This guy was never a hero, he was just a bad guy who did good things. A hero wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing now. A hero wouldn’t casually order what happened to Jordy.”
    “Senine.”
“No.” The whole room as suddenly heavier. Senine’s head swam. “He was a monster.”
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He started off as a minor baron in a far-off solar system. Then he founded the Stellar Swords and became a renowned hero, before turning around and becoming an Evil Overlord and Galactic Conqueror.
  • Galactic Conqueror: He has conquered entire planets and taken their star hearts for himself, and wants to make Earth his next prize.
  • Large and in Charge: He is described as quite big and buff, and is the dictator of the Hollow Hearts.
  • Love Makes You Evil: He was once a heroic Stellar Ranger and protector of the universe- until his beloved, Kilaua, was killed by the Savage Stars. He then swore to use Kilaua's star heart extraction process on the Savage Stars, and later began doing it to everyone he found, as a memory to his beloved.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: He wears a face mask with a mustache over it and is an Evil Overlord.
  • One-Winged Angel: For the final battle, he turns giant enough to smash through his large castle.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Everything he did was planned out by Kilaua/Lanessa, unbeknownst to him, as part of her plan to awaken the Penumbra.
Kilaua: Oh, you performed so well. I lend you some of my power under the guise of a scientific discovery, you collect hearts, and you challenge the holder of the Penumbra. Awaken her as I need her.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Just before June lands the finishing blow, he yells like crazy:
“I...I AM BARON STELLOS. I CAN WITHSTAND...WITHSTAND ANYTHING!”
  • You Have Failed Me: When Capricorn reports with his loss, he orders Lada to execute him.

    Finneous
Solar City. Population: Five hundred thousand, three hundred forty two. Crime Rate: Lowest on planet. Pollution: Lowest on Planet. Called "World's Happiest City". Suggested that inhabitants have high quality Star Hearts due to this fact.

A small jester robot who serves Baron Stellos as his advisor.

  • Co-Dragons: He and the Puppetrix are Stellos' most trusted minions. Or so it seems, but they are acutally using him- the one they really serve is a nameless Star Vampire.
  • Court Jester: He wears a jester hat, but otherwise doesn't act like one.
  • Duel Boss: He fights the rangers alongside the Puppetrix.
  • Monster Clown: He wears a jester hat and, despite seeming harmless, is a schemer and fighter who nearly defeats Cassie.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He initially seems to be a small jester sidekick who has no combat abilities and poses no threat. Then Chapter 5 and 6 happen and he holds his own against Cassie, reproducing the moves of her and her allies, and would have defeated her if not for Gemini. He also reveals his disloyalty to Stellos and that he has a plan to backstab him.
  • Perverse Puppet: Turns out to be one for the Puppetrix, as he is a ‘mechanical puppet’ she created.
  • Robo Speak: He usually talks like this to Stellos. However, he tends to drop it around others.
  • The Starscream: He and the Puppetrix have been planning to backstab Stellos from the beginning as part of their own plan to spread despair.

    The Puppetrix

An ally of Baron Stellos. She is a mannequin-like being with mysterious origins.

  • The Blank: She has no face.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Finneous are Stellos' most trusted minions. Or so it seems, but they are acutally using him- the one they really serve is a nameless Star Vampire.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: When she usurps Stellos, it appears as though she will be the final boss instead. But even after her defeat, Stellos wakes up and fights the rangers himself. She does, however, serve as the final enemy in the epilogue.
  • Duel Boss: She fights the Rangers alongside Finneous.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: invoked She is described as wearing "the outfit of some low-quality showman—a striped suit made of contrasting patterns of fabric, all of which were gaudy on their own". Lampshaded by Senine, who outright says she has "bad fashion sense".
  • Hope Crusher: She calls herself an 'agent of despair' and wants to activate the Penumbra and have it destory Solar City to spread despair.
  • Marionette Master: She can turn people into People Puppets. Even Finneous is a puppet of hers, and it is rumored that her body is yet another puppet- she doesn't seem to know if she has a real body, herself.
  • Murderous Mannequin: She is described as having a blank face like a mannequin.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the epilogue, she fuses with a bunch of mannequins to become the Mannequin Colossus, a giant version of herself.
  • Post-Final Boss: In a sense. She is fight long after the actual climax with Baron Stellos, and is the last enemy of Series One, but she is by no means easy to defeat.
  • The Starscream: She and Finneous have been plotting to backstab Stellos from the beginning as part of thier own plan to spread despair.
  • Was Once a Man: She used to be a humanoid little girl until she was cast out of her village when a woman accused her of spying on her. Before she died, a Vran Sie appeared and made her the Puppetrix.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: She used to be a normal girl who was friends with a boy. Then she was accused of spying on a woman and was cast out of the village to die, separated from the boy.

Jediah Guard

    General
A team of triplets who serve under Baron Stellos. After Commander Brush is killed, they are sent after the Rangers.
  • Lizard Folk: They are described as newt-like people.
  • Mook Chivalry: rather than ganging up on one Ranger all at once, they decide to split up and attack a ranger individually. They get beaten as a result.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: They are three Lizard Folk who are members of Baron Stellos' army and every bit as bad as most members.
  • Smug Snake: They go after the Rangers one-by-one, thinking they can win against them and taunting them, only to be easily defeated.

    Lieutenant Kniphos
I see you have bested my brothers, but I am the strongest of my family. And, fortified by this stolen heart, I am invincible.

A member of the Jediah Guard who claims to be the strongest of his family. He steals Julius' star heart and attacks June, Auggie, and Cassie.

  • Bullying a Dragon: He taunts June about him stealing her brother's star heart and the death of her parents in a car accident, and is certain he can win against her. This just enrages her enough that she activates the Penumbra and kills him easily.

    Corporal Forkos
You caught me off guard at first, young one, but it shan't happen again.

A member of the Jediah Guard who attacks Senine.

  • Hulk Out: He taps into his star heart and grows his muscles so big that his uniform struggles to hold them in.
  • Suicide Attack: When Senine is beating him, he taps into his star heart and bulks up, at the cost of his star heart slowly burning to death.

    Captain Spunos
Now, this will only take a second. Stand still, and it will be painless.

A member of the Jediah Guard who attacks Faye as she is first undergoing her werewolf transformation.

  • Bullying a Dragon: He attacks Faye while she is first turning into a werewolf and is completely unstable. She begs him to leave, but he refuses, planning to kill her and taunting her about it. A Curb-Stomp Battle with him being torn apart ensues.

Stellar Swords

    Rex
I am the greatest of the Swords, and, today, I will slay you, and any of your pathetic friends that I can drag from hiding with your dying screams.

A member of the Stellar Swords. He is a shark-like humanoid.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses one of his arms in the battle against the rangers.
  • Ax-Crazy: He really loves his job and takes pleasure in hunting down people to kill them and extract their star hearts.

  • Slasher Smile: Pulls this out whenever he is thinking of killing people.
  • Teens Are Monsters: He is said to be a teenager, and is an enthusiastic member of a ruthless alien empire.
  • Threatening Shark: He is a humanoid shark and the most bloodthirsty of the Stellar Swords.

    Temper
Surrender the bearer of the Penumbra—which I’m assuming is the albino—and the others, despite your disrespect, may live.

A member of the Stellar Swords. He is a small alien who has the ability to make monsters out of inanimate objects.

  • Honor Before Reason: He takes offense to Amber shooting at him rather than his construct, claiming it is dishonerable. Amber doesn't care, rightly pointing out that he will just keep summoning them unless she takes him out. Subverted when he then commits some dishonorable actions himself.
  • Hypocrite: He goes on about how dishonorable Amber is for being a Combat Pragmatist, then when June tries to unleash her powerful attack, attacks her before she can finish the incantation. He also supports the plan to attack and kill the rangers while they are still recovering.
  • The Napoleon: He has somewhat of a complex about his short height (even smaller than Auggie), and taes so much offense to Auggie insulting his height that he swears her defeat will be extra humiliating.
  • Smug Snake: He is confident that he will humiliatingly defeat the heroines despite his small size. When he is beaten, Stellos actually lampshades this:
Stellos: You see now, Temper, why I told you to take them seriously... Your hubris will, hopefully, be curbed in response to this failure.

    Feldane
You won’t see me coming, and your friends, well, they’ll never find you.

A member of the Stellar Swords and a strange creature with four arms and four legs.

    Lada
You’re a lovely opponent. I especially enjoy how readily you channel powers you can barely control.

A member of the Stellar Swords and a small, albino spider girl.

  • Affably Evil: Unlike most of the Hollow Hearts, she is genuinely polite and a Graceful Loser. When the others start planning to attack the rangers while they are weak, she is the only one to object and insist they wait for Capricorn, their strategist, and Stellos to give the okay, partly out of pragmatism but also because she likes the rangers as opponents.
  • Dance Battler: She dances as she directs her floating swords towards Senine.
  • Graceful Loser: When defeated by Senine, she surrenders and congratulates her.
“Concede.” Lada looked up at Senine, a bright smile on her face. “I concede. Very impressive, Stellar Ranger Void. I did not expect such sport from you. I expected Dark Star to fight me, and to detonate and destroy your tower. I expected to have killed you by now. Instead...I feel as though I have learned a great deal.” She gave Senine a deep bow. “Goodbye, Stellar Ranger Void. I look forward to our next duel.”
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She wears a big, poofy red and gold dress.
  • Spider People: She is a small spider girl with four upper arms, six eyes, and eight hair-tails.
  • Worthy Opponent: She considers Senine this after being beaten by her. She outright tells her that she looks forward to their next duel.

    Capricorn
And do not worry, I have not come to fight. I have a much simpler proposition. I want to play a game.

A member of the Stellar Swords and their strategist.

  • Affably Evil: He is genuinely polite to the heroines, and when Auggie wins his game, he sticks by his terms and offers his life.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Auggie, as both are The Strategist for their respective teams and play against each other in a chess-like game.
  • Graceful Loser: When Auggie beats him, he calls her an 'unparalleled genius' and lays down his life as he agreed to if he lost. Luckily, Auggie is merficul and spares him.
  • Smart People Play Chess: He is the strategist of the Stellar Swords and the most intelligent of them. While the game he plays against Auggie is not chess, it is rather similar and he himself notes the similarities, suggesting he does have knowledge of chess.
  • The Strategist: He comes up with the strategies for the Stellar Swords, and plays a chess-like game against Auggie.
  • Tragic Villain: It is implied that he doesn't want to serve Stellos, but has to because he lost a gtame to him and got his star heart taken as a result, so Stellos literally controls his life.

Others

    Commander Brush
I can see your heart is fully devoted to your work. You have an artist's soul....which is why I must, regrettably, do this.

The first of Stellos' troops that he sends to attack the Rangers. He goes after artist Jordy, stealing his star heart.

  • Art Attacker: He has the ability to turn objects into paint with his paintbrush-shaped spear, and can also conjure drawn objects to life.
  • Smug Snake: He acts smug for his whole short screentime and is absolutely certain that he can beat the Rangers, who are just a bunch of little girls to him. This overconfidence does him in pretty quickly.
  • Starter Villain: In the sense that he is the first villain the Rangers face, and serves as an indicator of what they will be dealing with from the Hollow Hearts, in addition to being beaten up so the heroines can show off their powers.
  • Warmup Boss: Of Series One and the overall series, as the first Hollow Heart that the Rangers fight.

    The Hounds
A trio of dog-like creatures who serve Stellos. They attack a cafe full of innocent people and kill much more.
  • Wolfpack Boss: Unlike the Jediah guard who attacked one at a time, they gang up on the rangers.

  • Warmup Boss: The first enemy faced the rangers in Series Three.

    Theris Wodi
I am Theris Wodi, I was imprisoned for, well quite a large number of murders. I captured my victims much as I have you, slit them open, and devoured their innards while bathing in their blood. Unfortunately, you must be alive for this. It’s my payment for the gift of becoming a beast.

An archon prisoner of the Fallen Star. A serial killer who primarily preys on men, she captures Amber to make her into her next victim.

i am doctor lament. welcome to my house of horrors. for this trip i require you split into groups of two and each pick a door. whichever group succeeds will receive a prize of unfathomable value. your lives.

The owner of the titular House of Horrors. Though seemingly just the owner of a horror attraction, the doctor is actually a real doctor who desires the Penumbra.

  • all lowercase letters: Their lines are written in this manner, likely to emphasize their monotone way of speaking.
  • Ambiguous Gender: They are referred to with the singular they, and thier body is obscured by shadow. Even their voice is described as androgynous.
  • Mad Scientist: They desire to study the Penumbra, and want to capture June for this purpose.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Initially, they seem to be less a real villain and more an actor (poorly) playing one. Their haunted house is built up to be Nightmare Retardant invoked in-universe, with an amateurish, barebones website, a Cliché Storm of a spooky backstory, and a dramatic voiceover by Lament that is simultaneously high-pitched and monotone, as if Lament themself was uninterested. The rangers go visit the house so they can laugh at it. Then Lament traps them inside and reveals thier knowledge of the Penumbra, sends traps and minions to kill them, reveals themselves to be an agent of Despair, and later is able to coerce Destiny into making a deal to save her life.

    Puck

    Nagina

Star Vampires

    Despair

    Hand of Despair

Sie

“hello nemesis.”
“...wretched child.”
“...little ducky.”
“...pathetic human.”
“...little lost lamb.”

The mother of the Eye and the Jaws of Despair. She is the top prisoner of the Fallen Star, locked away in the deepest vault, and the Jaws desire to free her. Should they succeed, she will destroy the world.

  • Evil Matriarch: She created the Anras and Lanessa, thus making them her children. She also uses the Anras as pawns in her desire to destroy the planet.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For the third series. She is the entity that the Anras are trying to free, and proves to be far more powerful than them as the final enemy.
  • Parental Neglect: She basically ignored the Anras in favor of Lanessa. This has made them desperate for her affection.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She is trapped inside the vault of the Fallen Star, wrapped in many chains so she cannot escape. The Anras seek to free her from her chains so she may destroy the world.
  • Terse Talker: She initially speaks in short sentence fragments, some as small as two words, and occasionally throws in a few complex sentences. This lessens once she is freed.

    Eye of Despair

Lanessa de Vran Sie/Lynneth Ursula Card/Kilaua

One of the granddaughters of Despair and the true antagonist of Series One and Two. A Star Vampire, she possessed the hero Lady Lanessa and used her body to seduce Prince Halloway, while also using the form of Kilaua to seduce Baron Stellos, and tempt both of them into evil. She is the secret boss of the Savage Stars. She also founded Sun Springs and later Solar City, and lives there in the guise of Lynneth. Her ultimate goal is to become the goddess of the universe and thus surpass her sisters.

  • Above Good and Evil: She claims that evil is for mortals and not an Eldritch Abomination like herself.
Senine: “Let me guess, evil’s a matter of perspective, you’re the good guy even though you’ve been an awful bitch this whole time, blah blah blah join me.”
Lynneth: “More or less, but I wasn’t going to say the first part. Evil is just such a mortal concept. It’s a very mortal label—and one, I’ve noticed, you limited creatures just absolutely love to apply to everything and anything. Types of meat, who one finds attractive, body functions, reproduction, certain fabrics...whereas there are people on the street who would say some torture or genocide is completely good and wholesome, even while condemning those things. Does the word evil really even have any meaning, anymore?
  • Alucard: Her human name/alias, Lynneth Ursula Card, spells out L. U. Card in a deliberate allusion to the trope, and befittitng of her being a star vampire.
  • Big Bad: The real one for Series One: Hollow Hearts and Series Two: Savage Stars. The actions of Baron Stellos and Prince Halloway, and their respective invasions of Earth, were all part of her plan to conquer the universe.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In both her Lynneth and Kilaua personas, she acts as a nice, friendly gal. As Lynneth, she supports Faye and stands up to Amber's homophobic bullying, and as Kilaua, she tells Stellos that she is conducting her experiments for the betterment of all living beings. In truth, she is The Sociopath who wants ultimate power over the universe and will stop at nothing to get it.
  • Broken Pedestal: To basically every one of the rangers save Senine (who already hated her) but especially Amber, who looked up to her as inspiration and went through Character Development because of her encouragement.
Amber’s hands were shaking. “She was, like, like...she was, like, an inspiration? She, like...like...was one of the reasons, like, I became a better person? And, like, it was all...all, like, a lie and like like she even gave me a speech! Like, a speech on, like...like not being able to show, like, your true self! And I never, like...I never, like even suspected.”
  • The Corrupter: She basically corrupts everyone that comes into contact with her. As Kilaua, she seduces Baron Stellos and teaches him how to extract star hearts, then fakes her death to get him to become a Galactic Conqueror who steals the star hearts of billions. As Lanessa, she seduces Prince Hal and acts as a Lady Macbeth to him, and also causes the crash that kills June's parents just to introduce June to suffering and stoke her desire for vengeance. as Lynneth, she manipulates the students of Solar City Junior High and has them turn on anyone who dares to suggest she is anything less than a saint.
  • Demonic Possession: She uses the body of Lady Lanessa to get around.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: As Lanessa, a dark, cloaked woman who is very obviously up to no good. Prince Hal is the only one who can't see this; Advisor Grim outright refers to her as a scorpion and knows she is using Hal.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: The true mastermind behind the invasions of the Hollow Hearts and Savage Stars is none other than Lynneth, the friendly head cheerleader who seemed to be an innocent civilian wholly unaware of the existence of magic or Stellar Rangers. She also happens to be Kilaua, Baron Stellos' beloved who was thought to be dead, but was Faking the Dead to drive Stellos to evil. She is actually the Eye of Despair, an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Eviler than Thou: Proves herself much more wicked than Gemini, Finneous, Prince Hal, and even Baron Stellos, who were all her pawns in her plan to become a goddess, and she has a scene with each one of them where she tells them just how superior she is to them, backing it up with intimidation.
  • Faking the Dead: As Kilaua, she pretended to be murdered by the Savage Stars by having them burn down her lab with her inside while she escaped, to push Stellos into despair and becoming a villain.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She speaks politely as she drains people's star hearts and plots the deaths of millions. She notably tells Stellos and Hal she loves them even as she refers to them as disposable pawns and takes their star hearts, making it sound more mocking than anything else.
  • Final Boss: Of Series Two.
  • Godhood Seeker: She has the ultimate Evil Plan of using the Penumbra and all the star hearts of everyone in the universe to become a supreme deity. In the third series, she decides to absorb the power of all her family members for this purpose.
Over the decades, the centuries, even maybe millenia, I will mark every single person capable of magic in the entire Universe. I will have an unlimited supply of light, constantly, forever. I’ll surpass my Grandmother, surpass my Mother, and I will be a goddess— the goddess. All power will come solely through me, and my complete and total control of all light.”
  • Hope Crusher: As a granddaughter of Despair, she enjoys driving people into despair and does so to June to activate her Penumbra powers as part of her plan. She desires to become the goddess of the universe so she can spread despair to all.
  • I Have Many Names: The Eye of Despair is her true name, but she is also Lanessa de Vran Sie, Lynneth Ursula Card, Kilaua, Carmilla Varney, Laura Sheridan, Lucy Renfield, and likely several others.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: The final stage of her Villainous Breakdown.
"If it takes a year or if it takes a thousand years I’ll ruin you, June Hespia, I’ll destroy everything you’ve ever—"
  • Lady Macbeth: As Lanessa, she pushes Prince Hal further into his Well-Intentioned Extremist spiral, whispering to him her commands.
  • Mad Scientist: As Kilaua, she began extracting star hearts from bodies so she could study them better, discovering their limits and strains- supposedly for the betterment of the universe, but really to formulate her plan to steal the star hearts of everyone in the universe.
  • The Man Behind the Man: To Baron Stellos. She seduced him and intentionally faked her death to get him to become a mass-murdering Galactic Conqueror and steal star hearts, as well as awaken the Penumbra.
  • The Man in Front of the Man: As Laneesa, she is this to Prince Hal, posing as merely her consort while actually being the mastermind who is using More than Mind Control to get him to do as she wishes.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulates Stellos and Hal into thinking she really loves them while using them for her own ends, and uses More than Mind Control to achieve both that and manipulate humans as well.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Senine calls her Hellspawn Bitch Card at one point.
  • More than Mind Control: Its hinted that her ability to hypnotize people and make them do what she wants requires them to actually like her first. Senine, who despised her even before learning her true identity, is unaffected by it.
  • Never Found the Body: Kilaua was supposedly murdered when the Savage Stars set fire to her lab with her inside, and the body presumably burned down. Of course, she actually escaped the lab fire and had planned it from the start.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Unlike the genuinely well-intentioned Prince Hal, she claims to want to save the Bellesari Kingdom by getting at the Penumbra, and later records a message to Hal claiming that her manipulations were all for the greater good and that she wanted the best for everyone. In reality, as a Vran Sie and granddaughter of Despair, she only wants to bring mass despair and become the goddess of the universe; when she is defeated at the end of Series Two, she decides that if she can't rule the Earth, she will destroy it and everyone June holds dear out of spite, completely undercutting her claims of wanting the 'best for everyone'.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Not initially, but once her One-Winged Angel form is beaten, and her plan is ruined, she decides to destroy the Earth because she can't rule it.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the final battle, after her humanoid form is beaten, she turns into her true Vran Sie form- a giant, spindly monstrosity with four arms and many eyes.
  • School Idol: As Lynneth. She is the most popular girl in the school, with everyonne but Senine loving her.
  • The Sociopath: She has absolutely no empathy for anyone around her. She puts on a superficial charm that is enough to attract Baron Stellos, Prince Hal, and the entire Solar City Junior High student body, but is a Manipulative Bitch who will happily sacrifice anyone once they are eno longer useful to her, and has no problem with mass-murder.
  • Southern Belle: One of her many personas, Carmilla Varney, was dressed like this.
  • Taking You with Me: She decides that if she can't rule Earth, she'll destroy it.
“You know, I liked this world. It amused me to no end. It’s a pity I’m going to have to ruin it. You could have avoided this, June. You could have prevented this from happening, but now...now you’re going to be obliterated, and I will bring this planet to ruin, all in one fell swoop.”
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Actually four aliases. She is Lynneth Ursula Card, Solar City Junior High's cheer captain; Lanessa de Vran Sie, Prince Halloway Decembren's consort; Kilaua, Baron Stellos' seemingly dead lover; and her real identity, the Eye of Despair, one of the granddaughters of the great star vampire Despair.
  • The Vamp: As Kilaua, she seduced Baron Stellos into falling for her so she could push him to evil, ending in her Faking the Dead to give him a final push, and as Lanessa, she does the same to Prince Hal (minus the playing dead) to turn him into a Well-Intentioned Extremist she can manipulate.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once her One-Winged Angel form is beaten, Lanessa goes crazy, trying to flat-out destroy the world. Just before she dies, her last words are swearing to ruin June.
“I will render your planet to cinders! I’ll kill all of you, and everyone you care about! If it takes a year or if it takes a thousand years I’ll ruin you, June Hespia, I’ll destroy everything you’ve ever--
  • Villain with Good Publicity: As Lynneth and her prior human aliases, she is beloved by Solar City for being the founder and a good citizen. She also, as Lynneth, is the cheer captain and most popular girl in the school for her kindness. Basically no one- not even Senine, her one vocal critic- knows that she is the Eye of Despair, a mass-murdering, psychopathic Eldritch Abomination. This is partially thanks to her More than Mind Control ability.
“Lynneth Ursula Card was the most popular girl in grade school, junior high, and will, most likely, be the most popular girl in high school this year, despite her Freshman status.” Octy said, stepping up on Avril’s other side. “She is beautiful, rich, intelligent, and athletic. She was the junior high cheer captain, and, if gossip is to be believed, she’s also the high school cheer captain, as well as the chess club captain. Absolutely everyone loves her, with one exception.”

“Lynneth Ursula Card is literally the devil.” Senine said with absolute certainty.

Avril gave her an incredulous look. “I’m sorry?”

“Look how perfect she is! She is the smartest, prettiest, most athletic, and most popular girl, everywhere she goes. Ask around—no one has any bad words to say about her.”
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She disposes of Baron Stellos, Advisor Grim, and Prince Hal when they are defeated (or in the case of Grim, betray her and help the heroines), and takes their star hearts for herself.

    Jaws of Despair

Anra de Vran Sie/Zanra and Vanra

Vanra: “We do still have one of them left. Perhaps they will be more helpful with some persuasion!”
Zanra: “Oh, lovely, perfect, dearest Vanra! You’re absolutely correct! Ah, I feel so much better now! Let’s go see what we can discover, my caring, loving sister.”

One of the granddaughters of Despair and the antagonist of Series Three: The Fallen Star. She took over the Fallen Star prison and split herself up into Zanra and Vanra. She desires to gather up enough star energy to release her mother from imprisonment.

  • Adorable Abomination: As Vanra and Zanra. Two cute little girls with cute dresses who also happen to be star vampires and a part of the infamous Vran Sie family, and are powerful enough to stump the rangers quite a bit.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: At the end of the day, Anra is just looking for the approval of her uncaring mother, and her demise at said mother's hands is played for pathos.
  • Ax-Crazy: They love murder and torture.
  • Big Bad: Of Series Three: The Fallen Star. She is behind the attacks on Solar City to steal everyone's star energy and all the prisoners answer to her.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: As Vanra and Zanra, though they are two halves of the same being.
  • Creepy Twins: Zanra and Vanra are a pair of tiny little girls who wear similar outfits, and also happen to be powerful andd terrifying villains who steal star hearts from people, and are actually two halves of an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Cute Is Evil: In their child form, Vanra and Zanra are tiny and described as adorable, so much so that Octy can't help but fawn over them a little when taking them out for trick-or-treating. They're also bloodthirdsty Enfante Terribles.
  • Enfante Terrible: They are a pair of eleven-year-old looking little girls who get excited about things like Halloween trick-or-treating and Christmas and sitting on Santa's lap, while also showing the same excitement about murder, torture, soul-sucking, and the apocalypse.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The twins, for how cruel they are, do love each other. When June is about to hit Zanra, Vanra shields her from the attack,a dn when it hits her instead, Zanra screams Vanra's name and expresses genuine concern for her sister. They also love their mother, are motivated by seeking to free her from her prison, and get offended when someone insults her; Zanra starts tearing up when she thinks her mother may not love her, and Vanra reassures her that she does. And it is their love for each other that ultimately makes Vanra do a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: They will do this sometimes. Given that they are two halves of the same being, this would seem to imply a shared mind of sorts.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Vanra, with some convincing from the heroines, turns against her sister Zanra after realizing that their mother only sees them as pawns.
  • Musical Assassin: Zanra and Vanra play a harp and violin, respectively, with powers similar to June's Penumbra guitar- they can shoot beams and level buildings. They can even be used to control people like puppets.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: This is what they turn out to be underneath their psychotic villainy. All they want is to free their mother so she will finally love them back instead of Lanessa.
I just want her to love me. She...she used to but after Lanessa came, after she tore me in half Mother only ever cared about her and....and I thought this would make her love me. If I free her, she has to love me, doesn’t she?
