Emerging the sole world superpower of the 21st century after the end of the Cold War and successfully spreading the teachings of communism to most of the world, The Soviet Union now stands as the face of the socialist revolution & the global working class.Despite its new status as the sole world hegemon, however, Russia's economy is stagnating, corruption spreads throughout the union like a plague, and the Soviet leadership is too arrogant to act on these issues. Meanwhile, Russia and her allies face possible political change, upsetting the Soviet world order.With the assassination of Chairman Dimitri Yazov, four figures are engaged in a power struggle. Gennady Zyuganov is a loyal member of Chairman Yazov's faction, Vladimir Putin , a member of the hard-line faction and head of the KGB with a lust for power, Alexander Rutskoy, a loyal member of the nationalist economic reformist faction and Mikhail Gorbachev, the exiled reformist and committed opponent of Yazov. Now the world's fate lies in the Politburo's ability to choose a successor.

• Arch-Nemesis: During the Cold War, the Soviet Union and the United States were the competing superpowers.
  • In the aftermath of the Great American Collapse, while the American People's Commonwealth are antagonistic towards the Soviets, the Soviet Union considers the American Republic as their true rivals, since their leadership consists of much of the former executive at the time the United States dissolved.
• Big Bad: For the American Republic and American People's Commonwealth.
  • The American Republic, being the self proclaimed true remaining American patriots in the former United States. Once their goal of reunited the United States is complete, they have a focus called "Revenge", which grants them a Puppet wargoal against the Soviets.
  • The American People's Commonwealth follows revolutionary socialism, and views the Soviets as tyrannical and not true socialists or communists. Depending on the focus path taken, the Commonwealth can go to war with the Soviets and the Warsaw Pact.
• Commie Land: It is the Soviet Union, after all, only now the trope doesn't only apply to the Union anymore.
• Glorious Mother Russia: In this timeline, Russia won the Cold War, making it the undisputed global superpower.
• Hegemonic Empire: The USSR survived until at least 2010, successfully spearheaded the global class struggle and brought about a communist world order.
• Multiple Endings: Each of Yazov's possible successors take the Union down different ideological paths.
• Russia Takes Over the World: The Soviets emerged the sole superpower after America dissolved in 1987 and spread communism throughout the world.
• Vestigial Empire: Downplayed compared to real life, due to the Union living another 19 years. But the economy has stagnated & corruption is rife.

Dmitry Yazov

In-Game Biography: ^{Click to Show} When asking about the most powerful man in the world, the answer will always resoundingly be Dmitry Yazov. Joining the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War in 1941 at age 17, Dmitry Yazov’s service to the Soviet Union has lasted for almost 70 years. Rising first throughout the ranks of the army, and then of the party, Yazov has brought a military demeanour with him into power in 1993, after Grigory Romanov passed away. Dmitry Yazov is regarded as the leader of the Military Clique, an influential faction of military leaders and officials from the Military-Industrial Complex within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Despite leading the singular world superpower for seventeen years, Yazov’s rule has not seen many improvements to the Soviet people. Corruption has risen, the economy has stagnated, and unrest has been on the rise within multiple Soviet Socialist Republics. Nevertheless, Yazov is regarded as a stable ruler, particularly when compared to his predecessor, and so long as he remains in charge, it is expected that the Soviet Union will keep trudging ever onwards towards the lofty promises of Communism.

The Chairman of the Soviet Union since 1987. Known for keeping the Union stable during a period of great instability, though in recent years he's been blamed as the cause of the Union's stagnation & corruption.

• Gone Horribly Right: After the previous chairman caused a stir within the Union, the Russian people wanted a more conservative leader who would keep things stable. Yazov did just that but hasn't made any reforms or major decisions since taking office.
• Plot-Triggering Death: Yazov's death is what sets off the power struggle in the Politburo that will define the Soviet Union's future— and by extension, the future of the world.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: He doesn't last very long before his eventual assassination.

• Commie Nazis: Already the furthest right leader of the USSR thanks to his free market reforms, Rutskoy can declare himself a Eurasian nationalist, dissolving the Soviet Union and either reinviting the old monarchy, ruling as an autocrat, or inviting the National Bolshevik party into government, where they introduce their esoteric ideology to all of the ex-Union, eventually replacing Rutskoy with their own leader, Eduard Limonov.

Mikhail Gorbachev

The former member of the Politburo, Gorbachev was forced to leave due to his reformist ambitions. He has since sought refuge in the American People's Commonwealth, where he is planning a potential comeback to take power as the next Chairman.

• Arch-Nemesis: Of Putin. If Putin comes to power, Gorbachev will "commit suicide" via two shots to the back of the head.
• Earn Your Happy Ending: Gorbachev definitely has the most optimistic focus path for the Soviet Union. If he becomes Chairman after Yazov's assassination, he has the option to dramatically restructure the political system in the Soviet Union. He will take major steps to democratize the country, greatly increase individual freedoms to citizens, the press, and opposition parties, and overall end the worst of the repression in the Soviet regime. Furthermore, these reforms will spread to the other members of the Warsaw Pact.
• Internal Reformist: Gorbachev was forced out of the Politburo and the Soviet Union as a whole due to his desires to take power and implement drastic economic and political reforms.
